TomTom 7 / iGo 8 Where's the receiver? - Touch HD Themes and Apps

Right, not mentioning the dark side of the force but let's say that suddenly I found in my laptop's harddrive the TomTom Navigator 7 and the iGo 8 for PPC.
I just love TomTom... it's so full of little things to customize here and there, but the interface is ugly as hell (compared to my Navman S50 3D satnav UI) and it's just working fabulous. I have one issue solved but still one little doubt. The issue was that it doesn't rotate the screen, there's no option in the program to do that but... thanks to Schaps and his amazing Advanced Config I re-enabled screen rotating. My question is - and I didn't find it anywhere - where is the GPS hardware in it? It's vital to know that if I want to rotate the screen I have to make sure I'm keeping the receiver on the top. Does anyone know whether it's on the left-hand side (HTC logo) or the right-hand side (videocall camera).
Now, about the iGo which seems to have another quite cute interface, everytime I load it, it will come up with a message saying no language files found... no idea what's happening.
For those who are questioning why I want so much to use my phone as a satnav is because Navman tried to charge me £70 for the Western European maps when I only need Iberia, UK and Ireland (UK & IE came with it). Bloody mercenaries!

Xda 11s help, it keeps frezzing up

i am new to pda's so take care with me, i am a real novice!!
any way it keeps frezzing up,
i have tomtom 3 blutooth sat nav, loaded on, which a college has given me!! it works fine but every time i touch the pda it frezzes (plus i dont need to touch it it just does it on its own accord,)
it isnt just when the tomtom is on,
it does it what ever i am doing!!
if you can help, please do!! but remember i may need well detailed info on what to do to rectifi the problem,
thanks bill
Bill, I had a similar problem with my wifes XDA II when I loaded Tomtom software onto it. I did the following and it resolved the problem for me, so you may want to give it a try (assuming you still have the problem).
Tap on Start (on the desktop screen)
Select Settings
Select the system tab at the bottom of the screen
Tap on the memory icon
Select the Running Programs tab
This opens up a window which shows you all the programs which are currently running on your PPC
Select STOP ALL from the options available
This will close all programs running on the system and free up your memory resource, so now go back to the desk top view.
Then start your Tomtom program up again as you would do normally and see if it freezes on you this time.
IMPORTANT ADVISE - You must close Tomtom down from the options within the program which, on my system is a large red EXIT APPLICATION icon found in the Navigator Menu.
Hope this works for you as well as it did for me.
Good luck

8) Go to the windows startup folder and delete connections.exe.
That will free up a lot of resources

whats this do
connections.exe.
Other than connections.exe..
Hey everyone,
I just received my XDA IIs from Hong Kong 3 days ago. Since then, the PDA portion is working great. But the phone keeps locking up. I cannot hear caller and they cannot hear me. I have been soft resetting at least 2 x a day...and missing calls..
is there anything else that we should delete?
Thanks!

There is an inherent problem with the audio on this particular model (Blue Angel)
The problem seems to escalate if you use the Bluetooth Audio.
I experience the problem 2-3 times a week, even with the connections.exe removed from the Windows/Startup Folder.
Hopefully a new release of the Radio/Firmware will cure the problem.

TomTom 5

Hello, just thought I would share my problems with you after installing TomTom 5.
I use a Blueangel (badged as XDA2S) with all the latest patches etc, but with the standard ROM.
After installing TomTom 5 I get the following problems.
1. No Virtual (screen) keyboard
2. The signal strengh meter does not display any bars or indicate the number of satellites locked onto
3. When I save my "home" position it only saves the co-ordinates in that session. If I shut down TomTom and re-start it then the "home position is lost
4. If I receive a call whilst the navigator is running, my XDA really struggles to display the telephone interface.
5. There is no option to change screen sizes
I suffered NONE of the above whilst using TomTom 3 so I have just removed TT5 and re-installed TT3 WITH NO PROBLEMS AT ALL.
TT5 worked well apart from the points above, but most of all I loved the extra detail and the super quick rastering/vectoring on the graphics whilst on the move.
Does anyone know if TT4 is worth installing, and what are the advantages of it over TT3?
Cheers

Virtual screen keyboard is a known problem, if you use "Advanced Planning" the OSKB works fine (or at least it does on my unit XDAIIs), the lack of sat info is strange are you leaving it long enough to sincro - it could take upto 20 min for the first time? is it wired or BT if wired is the IRdA ll beams still selected - if so turn it off and the wired unit will work I have had endless problems with my unit and in the end swapped it for another identical handset - and now it all works - I never got TT3 to work correctly as I use a BT headset and the TT3 locked it out from connecting, TT5 doesn't work fully with the XDAII2s using BT GPS and headset - when you terminate a call it closes down the GPS connection as well - since I have now set it all up running vs5 with wired GPS and BT headset its great - it does exactly what I want, check you settings and get back to me with more specific info if you want - mike
Hmm, intrigued that you say when you use "advanced planning" with TT5 on XDAIIs as if I use this option the OSKB is still missing
Hi, I get no problems navigating at all, but still no keyboard even using the advanced route planning.
Bluetooth worked fine with TT5 and TT3.
Cheers
OK I need to quantify that - I use the advancd planning to find destination on the map and save that as a fav, once this done the OSKB pops up and you can re-name it to what ever you want, its not ideal but I am prepared to live with it untill someone comes up with a fix - tt3 was much better but not on the XDA totally useless, having said that the new XDA O2 have given me has worked faultlesly since Saturday, perhaps the first one was a rougue unit time will tell, first impressions pretty good, no reset in three days and satnav plus phone operable whilst on the road - what it should have done in the first place

TOMTOM 6 does work on THD

I installed TT6 and got a squashed unreadable display, so I then downloaded WVGAFIX_BY_Cotulla which I got from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=455974
This little prog gives you 3 screen resolutions to choose from and it resolved the TT6 display issue (it also solved my Bridge game which also would not display properley)
I told TT6 to use "other NMEA GPS receiver" on com4 - It works perfectly
Thats great. thanks for the info.
had the same problem, going to try ur method.
Ive also manged to get TT6 working fine on my HD, However for soem reason it turns on the bluetooth as if it needed to connect to an external gps, not sure how to configure it??

Congratulation to your very nice news. Just some questions:
- Which screen options did you use?
- Do you use a (mort)script to set screen option before TomTom starts and reset after it terminates?
- What happens when there is a screen changing while running TomTom, for example when a phone call is coming in?
Thanks for sharing your experience.

Hi Goody
Use the 480x640 resolution to get the biggest possible screen on your Touch HD
You can use (mort)script but its not necessary, 2 extra strokes.
After you exit from Tom Tom you need to go back to the 480x800 screen resolution which is the normal HD settings.
Best Wishes

Hi SamCory
Thanks for sharing your great discovery and some brilliant lateral thinking, thats why I love this forum and visit it almost daily, the information on here is brilliant.
KaidM
This really worked great for me.
Now awaiting a 480x800 version or is that not possible
Excellent news and thanks to anybody providing news.
While waiting for my HD to arrive, I just would like to know what happens with the screen when TT6 runs and a phone call comes in. Does the screen get garbled?
If I had my HD already I would try myself...
where can i get tomtom software from im tired of looking for free tomtom software help plz

Does the TP2 have....(not FM Radio related)

Hi all,
Figured everyone is jumping all over the FM Radio 'issue' but though it could be useful having a Q&A thread for other functions. Please if others ask for owners (of productions models, those missing the FM Radio) to check features, can you NOT ask about the FM Radio!
I'm considering upgrading my TYTNII to a TP2 when it hits o2 uk, but would like to know if it supports rSAP? If someone could have a glance in the programs folder and see if there is a program called rSAP, or SAPSettings, I'd much appreciate it.
Also if anyone here uses Microsoft Reader and could tell me how well this works without a D-Pad to 'turn' the page, that would be nice too!
Thanks
Steve

Let me know what you want testing and I'll happily test anything on mine. Doesn't have anything called rSAL or SALSettings though, not that I can see.
I'm on o2 also, but heard this was only going to be out on Orange, T-Mobile and Vodafone in the UK, I got mine sim free
If you mean SIM Access Profile (SAP) then I've just found it in Bluetooth settings as an option to allow
Thanks for the reply. It is the SIM Access Profile I was interested in as my carkit uses that. Glad to know it has it. I was trying to decide between the Sony X1 and the TP2 and knew the X1 didn't have it. Any chance you could test MS reader? The app is free, and I can send you a copyright free ebook. It uses the D-Pad normally for changing pages, so have no idea how the TP2 would work.
Interesting to hear that o2 won't get it as they do have the Diamond 2. Might have to be the X1 afterall.

Yup, send me the link of the reader and the book and I'll give it a go for ya.
Have a mate with the X1, its nice, especially the 3.5mm jack on it. Always seems to be going wrong though, common problem with 3.5mm jack that thinks its has a headphone plugged in so all calls are through headphone and not through phone speaker, he's on his 5th now in 3 months.
Don't know about X1 keyboard, the Pro2 is AMAZING, fully lit and.. well, it is the best feature of the device, especially the way you can tilt it if you want, because sometimes, you just dont want to. Plus on full tilt, the Pro2 stands on its own.
Ask o2 if they are getting it as I also heard they werent getting the Diamond2, but if they have, I've been misinformed.
Thanks for the offer. I have the TytnII (Stellar) at the moment and am happy with it, so on that front both the X1 and TP2 should be an upgrade in terms of performance. Which one had the better specs was really irrelevant.
The X1 has the 3.5mm jack (and now a radio as it turns out) but the TP2 had the bigger screen and the better tilt, which after having had a TytnII and a HTC Universal (o2 XDA Executive) made the choice really difficult until both devices were out there and I could get some real world info on how they actually performed.
Depending on how the TP2 handles MS Reader could be the deciding vote, which may sound petty, but I use the ebook reader a lot, and have no desire to loose access to my collection of nearly 900 books (or have to convert them to another format!)
Here are the links to the:
Program
Test Ebook
Both are hosted on my own site, or if you prefer to download the application direct from Microsoft, click here.
Like I said, I normally used the D-Pad to 'turn' the page. Thre is a tiny on screen arrow to do the same, so can you turn the page ok on the TP2 hitting this, or does dragging your finger across the screen turn the page much as moving your finger up and down the screen scrolls web pages up and down in Opera or PIE.
Thanks for taking the time to do this. Hopefully I can return the favour myself someday.
Well you'd assume it would turn the page by moving your finger but unfortuntly not. With the keyboard out this isn't an issue as you can use the arrow keys however outside this the arrow is to small to use easily.
If the arrow doesn't bother you then yes looks great otherwise maybe try another reader or start bugging Microsoft to update it.
I wish I could try another reader, but the MS Reader files are propriatory, and I don't fancy converting 800+ files!
Hopefully my network will pick this up, and even more hopefully, the local store manager will let me play a bit before purchasing!
Thankyou for the testing though.
I was wondering.. if it were possible to accept incoming calls using the 'mute' button on the back.
Here is the scenario I'm imagining: I'm in my poor mans car without any proper bluetooth system hooked up to the radio. But I do own a windscreenholder which could hold the device backwards (thus having the speakers towards me). If one would call, I would just press the 'mute' button to accept the call. Rather then touching buttons on the device to make it go to speakermode and having to turn it around whilst driving. I know the device will automatically go to speakermode when placed flat on a table, but I don't really have a good spot in my car for this - plus I'd like it to be firm in it's holder instead of loose on the dashboard.
Of course, I could also get a decent bluetooth earkit. But I thought the button idea wasn't half bad. If some handy tweak would make the mute button accept calls over the speakers, I think it would be pretty useful.
Ideas?

I assume the hack would be little more than a regedit, probably not too hard for someone who has done that sort of thing before (not me). The downside for your scenario is that you wouldn't know who was calling when you answered, but I guess you're cool with that.
Usability questions
Hi All,
I have a few questions about the functionality/usability of the TP2 after reading several members' encounters with the actual device. My first question is whether, when TF3D2 is on, do the soft key menus still allow for keyboard quick selection of items (i.e. on my Uni in email, hit right softkey and then "s" to send and recieve). On all the screenshots of the new menus I've seen, there don't seem to be any underlined characters that would allow for this sort of operation.
Secondly, has anybody had a go at remapping any of the buttons (whether it be the front 4, volume controls or even the mute button)? I'm one of the people who fear they may miss not having a D-pad and remapping some of the buttons may be a solution to this...
Cheers BO$$

I've not tried remapping any of the buttons but as for the keyboard quick selection, this does not work, probably because they are HTC menus rather than Windows Mobile Menus.
When a SuperLite rom comes out which takes out the HTC menu system it will probably work then.
Cheers,
ordered my TP2 through Clove now, haven't had an order confirmation email yet though...
Waiting and hoping!

[APP] TomTom Launcher for disabling timeout

EDIT:
Having trouble keeping the program focusing, so does not work yet.
It's a basic program which makes sure the display doesn't timeout while TomTom is running. Devices such as the HTC Maple and the HTC Excalibur doesn't support this function natively.
I have only tested it on my HTC Maple and it works fine. The default path to TomTom is \Storage Card\Program Files\Navigator\TomTom Navigator.exe
It comes with two programs, one is for launching TomTom and the other one is to change the default path. I suggest copying the files into your TomTom folder, but it doesn't matter. Remember to create a shortcut to the launcher and add it to your startmenu for easy access.
It could work on the HTC Excalibur but I haven't tested yet, so If someone could test and reply to this thread, that would be great.
Hmm?!? I've been using WinMo for quite some years, since Qtek S200 and also serveral different versions of TomTom, 5 6 and 7, and I never, but never saw my pda going timeout due to TomTom...
The same I cannot say of iGo8...

I think the timeout being referred to is when you have a PIN setup? I am going to download and try on Diamond - will post result.
Can it be used for Garmin as well?
I don't know about Tom Tom but I have the same issue with Garmin - could you modify this app so that it will so the same for Garmin? WOuld be greatly appreciated

Your right, I've used the HTC Universal and that work fine for TomTom. But with phones such as the HTC Excalibur and now my phone the HTC Maple, the TomTom times out. So the problem probably vary with different phones and maybe even different TomTom version.

Have you tried using this program with Garmin as well? Even though it says its for tomtom it could be used for other programs.
If it doesn't work its probably because your device has a different pvDevice name than my HTC Maple. The pvDevice name is needed to access the power functions on the phone (Mine is BKL1: ). What is your device name? I could check the pvDevice name and update the program to work with your phone and my phone

Thanks for the prompt reply. I am currently using my old iMate JasJam (runs wm6.1) as the GPS chip on my HD2 died. It is - hopefully - being repaired as we speak. However, as I am off to the Czech Republic in a week for a holiday I may have to use it instead. Nothing worse than having to restart the phone every 5 min as you are walking around trying to see the sights.
Don't know what "pvDevice name" is or where to find it. Under Device settings in wm6.1 it says my model no is Herm100 and Platform is PocketPC using CRCs rom version r13.5 but I'm guessing that's not what you are referring to.
I will try just installing it and see what happens. Any further help would be greatly appreciated as this app would be brilliant.
Edit: 1: Just edited the "Save TomTom.exe path" file to point the Tom Tom Navigator launcher to Garmin instead. This has worked to launch Garmin instead of Tom Tom but it still cuts out after a few minutes. I also have S2U2 running so I will add Garmin to the Exceptional Exe list on that and see if that helps.
Edit: 2: Still turned itself even after adding to S2U2 Exceptional Exe's!

Im really sorry. I just did a full test today and It seems even I can't get it working . The screen stays on but it loses focus after a while. I'll start working on it now!
When you say "cuts out after a few minutes" is that the display turning off? Or just Garmin losing focus?
Nothing to apologise for - just to have someone develop such an app and make it available for free is a privilege - wish I had the knowledge and skills to do it.
To answer your question, the screen turns off - I have to press the screen-on button at the side of the jasjam, then navigate to the Garmin program launch icon and press it. The program comes back up to where it left off so I guess it must still be running in the background. Of course, when I am on external power this is not a problem - it keeps running. OK in the car but not much good when walking around.
I have noticed that in System/Backlight settings the screen is set to turn off after 5min when on Battery Power so I have unchecked this option, ie screen shouldn't ever turn off. This seems to be working; however, when Garmin is turned off I then have to remember to reset the backlight-off timeout otherwise I'll quickly have a flat battery.
Nowhere near as elegant as your app promises to be.
Have had Garmin running for past 10 min while I have been typing/composing this reply and it hasn't dropped out ..... yet.
What do you mean by "losing focus"
Further to above, I have had Garmin running non-stop since the above post - 30 min - so unchecking the "turn off screen backlight" seems to have done the trick. Now I just have to go through the nausea of manually checking it again in he system properties.
Thanks for your assistance.

Its just like your desktop, when you are doing something in a window, be it typing, mouse clicking etc, you are focused to that window. But as soon as you click another window your focus changes to that window. So whats happening with this program is its focused on TomTom for around 30s but then it is losing focus to something in the background. Nothing visually happens on the screen, but as soon as I press a key it switches to the background.
It sounds like even the backlight doesn't stay on for you...
Hopefully I can figure this problem out by soon, when I do, ill post
For your info, I have two settings that seem to be relevant both related to Battery Power:
1. Settings>System>backlight>battery power> uncheck "turnoff backlight if device not used for ..."
2. Settings>System>power>advanced> on battery power> uncheck "turnoff device if device not used for ..."
When the Garmin first turned itself off I noted that "1" was checked and set to 5 minutes and "2" was checked and set to 2 minutes. 2 minutes seemed to be the time it took before the phone/screen turned itself off. Once I unchecked "1" the setting @ "2" was irrelevant.
Re loss of focus - no, the screen went blank. When I pressed the power on button for the screen the "today" screen came back up. I then pressed the program launcher>Garmin and Garmin resumed where it had left off.
Hope this helps. Regards Ross
Just a heads up.
You can just download a LightJacker from this address:
http://w1.ozone.mine.nu/default.asp?c=index_lj Looks like it does what people want and is easy to use.
