FINALLY!!!!!! - HTC Cavalier

Just Ordered An Unlocked Cavalier From Bestbuy.com Its Shipped And Should Arrive Today!!!! Whooooo Hooooo

so...it is good?

Will tell you tonight, I live in Egypt and I shipped it to my father-in-Law's house in Florida, he got it and is flying into Egypt tonight!
CAN'T WAIT!!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!!!!!!

UPDATE: Its AMAZING!!!!!!! I love it!

does it comes with wm 6.1?
i herad the battery duration is not good? is that true?

No it comes with WM 6.0... Cruzzm has wm 6.1 up on this board here, but I'm too chicken to upload it on.
Battery is OK, not excellent but not bad, been playing with it all day long.
Its EXACTLY like my older Treo 750 in regards to battery power, same stand by time and talk time.
I am syncing my E-mail on it regularly and its handling well.
I am REALLY happy with it, easy to use keyboard, excellent speeds on HSDPA and Wi-Fi, beautiful display, sound quality is good, and the software is smooth and not choppy no hang ups so far and I've been really playing with it all day long!
Been waiting months for this baby!!!

thx for the info...i want to replace my dash with this phone...the good thing is cavalier is cheaper than the dash in my country

I think you should go for it. Before the Cavalier I had a Motorola Q8 which doesn't have 3G, the transition to 3G is amaaazing!

Will you upgrade to Kaizer?

Kaizer has GPS, great, smaller, but barely, slanted=who cares, same screen=sucks.
Other than GPS, that I only use while driving (so the BT GPS is fine), can't really find a reason to upgrade and spend $800????
Also, been playing with the Iphone and having terrible thoughts...
But the Poll is:
Will you upgrade and why???
definitely
I have upgraded and no regrets faster cpu although its the same 400 mhz but it feels faster
i wanna see the polaris first
My next PDA will got VGA screen and a better camera than the kaiser one.
But It's Got A Higher Version Number!!!!
Will be trading up, but to the Vario 3 rather than the Kaiser. What's the difference? Lots of cash!
My contract's up in a couple of months, I can sell my Vario 2 for more than the upgrade's gonna cost me so the question (in my case) is why wouldn't I?
Indeed I will
Yeah i will upgrade cause
Slanty Screen
Native wm6 not a cooked rom
umm.. I like new stuff
My Hermes 8525 is here to stay this year. Very happy with it's looks and capabilities that were developed on the forum. Next year I'll reaccess the Kaizer's progress.
I'd consider it if I could be a NON US version that has the front camera. I hate not having an option that I'll never use
Nah, I'd rather wait for something that has the specs of XDA Flame with GPS and WM7 (and less buggy).
I used to have a Universal.. I kinda miss the VGA screen. I was willing to let go of the VGA screen just becoz the Hermes has HSDPA. But right now, I'm not willing to pay for a new device just because of GPS and 128Mb RAM.
Slanted?? so what? I rarely even use the keyboard ever since I discovered pocketCM kb.
If I had a lot of money to waste, maybe I will.
I'm waiting for the omni. If it ever comes out, that is.
I am staying with my 8525, no upgrade for me
Would love to have the gps and that slick tilt screen, but gonna stay with the Hermes for now. Will wait until they finally throw in a 800x480 (or at least something more than this pitiful 320x240) screen with some real estate to view websites and documents. Hopefully that will happen sooner rather than later.
My contract is up @ January 2008
Then i will get the Kaiser and my Hermes will find a new owner in ebay *g*
Got the Hermes from t-mob at 70€ here in Austria and that will be the same for Kaiser.
I think it is not bad if one waits until the new year as the early-product-problems will be sorted out then...

Mine will be up in January too, but it's going to be hell trying to change contracts.
I'd like to get everyone's opinion on the built in GPS feature. My question is that, if I have the unit mounted on the dash of my car, for navigation purposes, will the GPS have a good view of the sky through the roof? With a BT GPS, I just toss the little reciever up on the dash so it can "see" out the windshield, and I can mount the PDA anywhere I want it.
How good is the reception of the GPS unit when it is built-in? Do any built-in units have an external antenna plug that can be used?
Brian.
Owwww yeah! That will be my new phone(A)

Apparently it has some kind of dual CPU one for the phone part and one for the PDA part. You might be able to test the speed for me... Stream or play soemthing in RealPlayer then start up messaging and compose a new txt message... does the sound stay constant and uniterrupted?
It never does on my Hermes but this would interest me if it did on the Kaiser and if it renders web pages faster.
The built in GPS and slandted screen are nice but not necessary for me to upgrade.
Qaiser/kaiser hypes is just as bad as iphone!
all hypes, dont do much!
tell me, what does Qaiser has that my tytn/8525 cant!
and how much do u pay for those "few", or "little" features?
800buk?
i dont mind to pay 800buk to upgrade my tytn, but i want something better then just build-in gps!
this is what i going to get! eten x800 with VGA, gps build-in! or Imate 6150. i'm just desperate for VGA!
y do i call the Qaiser/Kaiser all hypes just like the iphone?
go to ebay and take a look! most sellers got like 30 or 100 Qaiser avail, and how many did they sold??
Nope... will wait for the price to drop further!
Why???
Every six months, there is a good ppc on the market, well I don't care as I don't have that kind of money to change devices every six month. Hermes fulfills my needs and I don't need a GPS. So My Hermes (and Cavalier) are to stay untill WM Photon arrives (by the way I read somewhere that it will be 2008 or 2009).
Cheers

So long, farewell, auf wiedersehen, goodbye.

Well, it's been fun.
It was renewal day this weekend, here in the UK as many of you will know all our handsets are subsidised by the network operators. Therefore every so often we have the chance to "upgrade" our handsets, it is a merry dance. Once "out of contract", we can change operators, switch price plans, and get a new handset for "free" or a combination of any of these. It can all be rather confusing, but the long and the short of it is that I can get a shiny new piece of kit, so it's great.
Anyway, I've had the vario II on t-mobile in the UK for one year and now it's been chopped so I thought I'd leave my thoughts. It was good. Obviously I flashed it with jasjamming and more recently schaps plus several others. I reckon I flashed it probably 50 times, reinstalled settings and apps, a compulsive tinkerer I suppose!
Pros...
Full keyboard
High Speed Data on t-mobile was good and genuinely useful
TomTom 6 (with ext. gps receiver purchased on ebay for 30 quid)
Useable web browser (just)
Customisable with firmware flashing!
Amazing forum here full of helpful people
Cons...
BATTERY LIFE (it's appalling, there is no getting away from it)
Heavy as a hod of bricks
Form factor (too big)
------
So what did I go for...
Nokia 6120 Classic.
wtf nokia 6120?!
Nothing like going back to the dark ages
you should have held out for a couple of months and got one of these
http://www.htc.com/product/03-product_htctouch_dual.htm
I myself have bought a new N95 8GB as my second phone.
Bingobob,
Good luck to you. You made the choice you want and that's all that matters. Never quite sure why people think that what they would buy/get is what everyone else should buy/get!
What did you do with the t-mobile device then? Sell it or is it up for sale?
WB
that's the thing, not sure. Flash it with something I suppose and/or use it as a TomTom or ebay it. not sure.
Well if you fancy offloading it and its not too expensive, PM me. I am assuming its in good condition? Also assuming that its unlocked, etc, and you have all the bits for it?
Cheers
WB
It;s also for me the end..
I bought a Nokia N95.
Ciao, Good Bye
Each to their own. Personally I have to stay with touch screen phones... from here it will be the Kaiser or some variant down the line...
Same here, I love touch screens.
Although I'm very happy with my hermes I'm waiting for the the touch cruise.
Well, I'm waiting for a 3G iPhone, no more WM6 device I think.
Same here, when there's a good offer for the iphone I'll ditch the HTC. But as for 3G, that's only a vague rumor, I wouldn't count on it.
I could never go back to a non-Windows phone.
Especially for a Nokia or an iPhone.
I've played with various Nokias over the years and I think that they are the worst mobiles out of any I've ever touched.
As for the iPhone, over-hyped, over-priced, and under-developed.
I'm HTC's ***** now.

They have to make one with 3G or it will not sell in Europe. Also needs mms.
i switched to IPHONE. and i am very stisfied.
i watched this forum for quite a while, but however you will patch the hermes, it will never come even near to the iphone. everybody tries to construct iphone-like UIs. so why not take the original one?
peter
I've moved from my TyTN to an iPhone. I can't see myself going back to the TyTN anytime soon either.
iPhone ist great for design (friggin awesome btw ) and "OS" only (included internet browsing) it's really neat and user friendly.
Otherwise all the rest is total crap, most of the time technology wise
No 3G (TyTN has 3G+) a heresy for a phone that want's to be "multimedia"
Camera 2megapixel (same as TyTN, crap for both )
Bad autonomy (i'm connected on 3G with BBC on all the time for straight 34h without any problems)
No email downloading possible or push mail
So if apple re-considers and brings out a phone that has all those abilities yeah I would gladly change. Moreover, BBC or something equivalent is for me top priority
what do you think about the new htc touch cruise...?
The Iphone is personally not for me. I want to customize the phone when I want to.
Also no 3G is really a deal braker for me.
As to the UI I admit MS has something to learn from Apple but other then that no thank you.

That's the cool thing, you actually can. What interests me and has drawn me to WM was the ability to fiddle with it, do a bunch of hacks and tweaks etc. However, while the thing is very flexible and powerful it's "unusable". 3 seconds to exit from sleep, up to 5-10 after opening the keyboard to let it rotate screen and become responsive again, ...
Once you've tried internet browsing on the iPhone / iPod touch you just realise that WM's IE even with addons is pretty much the worst thing you could think of, only to be used in last resort, while I can be nearly as effective on the iphone than on my PC...
Guys are developing apps for the iphone at the same rate than here on WM6, and having a full Unix-based OS allows for even a LOT more possibilities than a mobile Windows version...
The lack of 3G is indeed a pain. But then, when I use it on my HTC it's by using it as a modem for the laptop, as there's no way to actually make use of it on the device itself...
If there was an official news saying that the European one would have 3G I'd wait. But I'm not dreaming and know there is VERY little chance. We'll know soon, as France will have them in a few days. But for now, the imported ones are selling like hot cakes, suppliers are getting out of stock all the time and prices go up as they have difficulties sourcing them. So I don't think not having 3G will bother anyone. Especially with the sky-high prices for mobile internet around Europe.

The Rumored T-mobile Dash 2

How many of you hope that when/if T-mobile brands this phone it isn't the Cavalier but some entirely new phone?
hopfully not for awhile cuz i just got the dash 3 months ago.
I wouldn't mind the S630 at all.
Where did you hear this... rumour ?
I don't think it will be a Cav, unless the Cav has about double the battery life and is 3G ready. Trying to predict the future from reading Gizmodo/etc. and biweekly Tmobile chattings, I think it doesn't cut the mark for what Tmo US has planned.
However, if they did push it, it would probably get the Cav in widespread circulation enough to get it some decent development, which it currently lacks. Until it is popped wide open, I'm not interested.
So I think the Cav is not the Dash 2. And I think the Shadow 2 will be around looong before a Dash 2. My two cents, now 100% off, one night only.

Oh, he heard about it on this hot phone hacking site: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=388897
I dont know what kind of "development" you're expecting for the Cavalier. I mean... it's a standard smartphone... it's a Dash on steroids. What makes it so special that the current applications developed for landscape smartphones, wouldn't work on it ?
T-Mobile in the US needs to step their game up. Our phones out here suck. When I first got my Dash about a year ago I was one of the only people I knew who had it. Now I see it everywhere because they haven't released anything good. Nothing new. Who wants a Smurf looking phone or a the Shadow (looks cheap)? If there is a new smartphone or PDA from HTC I can't wait to see it for T-Mobile. Does anybody know a loophole I can slip through to get my hands on a T-Mobile UK phone without paying $600?

ROM cooking.
I don't see why people have such a problem with the Cavalier! It's an awesome phone. We all love our Excaliburs...and from what I understand, the Cavalier is nothing but a "next-gen" Excalibur. That's a good thing...right? If the Dash 2 is the Cavalier or isn't the Cavalier--either way I'm anticipating it's release.

I'm not hating on the Cavalier. I've only heard that all the new smartphones Tmobile US is interested in have to have a much longer talk time on WiFi than, for example, the Dash. Since the Cavalier is similarly sized, I suspect it is similar in battery life. And I am not aware of it being 3G, which they have said all the new high-end phones will be.

Well the cavalier ( at least the ones sold in the UK and japan ) have 3g , dont know if its UTMS or HSDPA. but the only complain people have is the battery life on the device. Since it includes a more robust 400mhz proc (made by samsung i think?) and includes 3g It is naturally have a shorter battery life. (unless they have found another battery with more "juice" to offset the extra power and bandwidth)

Iris Specs (CDMA)

The Cavalier is buggy and not worthy to succeed the Dash.
http://pocketnow.com/index.php?a=portal_detail&t=reviews&id=977
They should have at least kept the rounded corners.
Cavalier is not significantly better
I bought Cavalier a few months ago to be used on T-Mobile network. I ended up selling it and keeping the Dash. Here is my impression:
- The phone did not feel fast despite the processor, because the O/S was not optimized for it.
- Battery drained in 1 day or less depending on usage.
- T-Mo does not have 3G, so internet was about the same.
I am honestly getting tired of the JOGGR. Makes me want to get another phone. However, I like the HTC's and I do not want a touchscreen device.
Thanks guys, for all the insights and opinions on the Cavalier. I honestly thought it would be just as good (if not, better) than its predecessor... I've been playing around with the thought of getting an unlocked Cav from Best Buy's website, but after reading all these posts--I'm not so sure...

It's finally here (march '09). Excalibur replacement

Since we saw a couple of weeks ago htc's '09 roadmap, I've been waiting to find more info on the HTC S511 'Cedar', and it looks they are finally here.
PDAdb.net just added the (incomplete) specs for the device.
Can't wait for it to be released, and I'm hoping that some local carrier gets it ASAP.
What are your thoughts?
There's no info yet on the battery or weight, whatsoever, but if the stock battery doesn't get me throught the day I won't mind changing for a high capacity one as long as its form factor is similar to the dash one.
Looks good, i hope its in black or atleast a black shell is availbe.
I really really wished they atleast added a 2.5mm audio output... itd be nice to be able to charge it while listening to music...
Any guesses on a price if tmobile gets it? if its in the 200-300 range.. im all over that
cool.. yeah a black shell will be great

It has HSDPA faster than 3G
looks really nice!!
That site indicates the S620 has IR. Pretty sure that's incorrect.
The fuzzy image of the Cedar reminds me of the Palm Centro. Except the Centro of course has a touch screen.
Glad to see a replacement, but I have personally outgrown WindowsMobile Standard. It's almost time for me to move on to a touchscreen or a Blackberry.
damn I swapped my Dash for a G1....when this comes out I may have to cop it straight up just to have it.
dash 2
News floating on the net says different , HTC S511 Cedar isn't the new dash. The new HTC Maple/3G Excalibur is said to be the successor of the dash/excalibur.

My fault... Seeing the specs it looked like the straight replacement for the dash, but I should have noticed it's a S5xx series, and I suppose dash replacement will be S6xx, or something of the sorts.
Anyway, specs-wise looks good.

Just wondering why you're talking about the mda mail on the dash replacement thread.

AAGH! /(&%/ TP2 lost

Have you ever been in tears while kicking your self at the same time?
Thats´s what i am pretty close to right about now.
Yesterday i lost my TP2. Looked everywhere but no go.
After the holidays i´ll put up a poster advertising a reward in the local store.
i´d just updated to sense 2,5 & bought spb backup.
Now i´ll either have to get lucky (getting the phone back that is ) or start from scratch.
If that is where i´ll end up, i´d like your input.
I thought about getting a cheap peace of c##p phone until TP3.
Anyone hazard a guess as to when that might be?
I thought about jumping WinMo ship and getting the Legend. I know - TP2 keyboard is a dream but there isn´t any recent android phones from htc with hardware keyboard. I love using the keyboard but maybe i could adapt.
Does anyone know of a good compulsive review for the Legend and have you tried switching back to a phone without the KB?
Please let me have your thoughts.

maybe you should get a kaiser they are pretty cheap for a pretty good device.
Definetely Kaiser. I just sold my kaiser after almost 2 years of using and that`s a workhorse, stable, good battery, could be great tweaked. I got Rhodium for a while and I miss my Kaiser (really).
The speed, beautiful screen, excellent speaker, and increased memory of my Tilt 2 is what is keeping me from going back to my Kaiser, but there are features that my Kaiser had that I REALLY miss in my Tilt 2.
I loved that my Kaiser had the additional buttons to reassign, a scroll wheel, a D-pad, and I could get to the SIM and SD cards WITHOUT having to remove my back cover! That baby is a bit slower and can lag from time to time, but it's still a workhorse, and I've put it through heavy usage, many drops, and it was even left out in the rain during a heavy down pour for a few minutes, and yet still works!
I haven't tried all of the 6.5 ROMs available for the Kaiser, but I always developed the Sleep of Death with any that I've tried, as well as a few other quirky, random problems. I either haven't found the right ROM or my version of the Kaiser absolutely hates 6.5. I've been using the ROM in my signature with it for a while now and haven't found any problems -- it just works!
Apparently others still view the Kaiser as a go-to device, after seeing that they often sell for quite a bit over $100 on Ebay.
Best of luck!
Debbie
I thank you for the input folks.
Used to have a kaiser that broke down on me.
Will give it some thought though.
Regards ELO
hey, did you have the microsoft myphone app installed on the device...if so you can pull up your tp2's location via gps on a map...it is very accurate...
i lost my tp2 a couple of weeks ago and i used that feature...also you can lock you phone and make your phone ring constantly for up to 60sec, regardless if it is set to vibrate or silent...
good luck...

I`m really touched with your words for the Kaiser...that`s my untold story of my Kaiser...
@ da9th_one.
Rats - didn´t know that.
i thought Microsoft My Phone was a web based back up thing.
Around these parts of the world we only have GPRS so far. To top that off we pay 10 DKR/MB. ~ US$1,50. I try to not be ripped off totally by being very careful about the web based applications i use (only manual updates from wifi etc.)
Will remember this little tidbit of info though. Thanks a bundle.
