Ignore this post. Dumb a** award of the day goes to me. I forgot to write the files as ".asx". Doh.
Via the USB mount program I am able to cruise the WM6.1 file system.
I have created some playlists via my Ubuntu desktop and written them to the Playlists directory on my phone.
The files show up in Ubuntu through the mounted disk (i.e. my phone) but when I use Resco File Explorer they are not visible. The media player cannot see them either.
Hopefully it is a file permission problem. The files show as read/write in Ubuntu.
... or is it something more fundamental with the FAT driver in Ubuntu and WM6.1?

Im pretty new here and just got my BA not tooo long ago...I used to be a trreo user now im hooked on my BA.
I see alot of software that comes in a form of a cab file...does anyone know how I can load that software on my BA? thanks alot!
hey mate and welcome!
if you put the cab file in your pc folder; you'll see that the description is "zip file"....that's because it's the only format microsoft recognizes...in a way its also true as the cab file is a compiled program ready for installation. what you do is DON'T unzip the file in your pc; rather cut/copy and paste it directly in your ba (via activesync or in your sd card). put it in a folder that's easy to find; say "my documents...personal" (or you can make your own folder to put in cab files). use your ba's file explorer and go to the folder...from there double click (via stylus) on the cab file and it will automatically install itself. btw, if you copied the cab file in your sd card you can also execute the installation there....no need to paste it in your my documents area.
if you're using wm2005; upon execution the unit will ask you if you want to install it in the sd card or internal memory....that's really up to you depending on the size of the file you're installing.
hope that helps

thanks alot Robson.
Ive always looked past cab file programs b/c i couldnt install it. I hope this thread helps other newbies too. I searched and couldnt find an answer.
is there anyway that can install cab files direct from pc to ppc?
sorry for the late response; was in china for a week.
unfortunately, no. i don't think there's a way to install cab files via pc. if you do unzip a cab file; you'll notice that the files are something like:
0000124
009890
or something like that....can be as many as 20 lines of code...but scanning through the entire zip will not give you any .exe files which can be executed via pc. if you have a card reader installed on your laptop, simply copy and paste the cab file on your sd and from there install via your ppc
hope that helps

hello guys! do you have any idea on how to run .exe/.msi files using an sd card? i cant synchronize my ba for the reason that i still dont have a usb cable for it. i do update my ba using cab files only.
i have many useful utilities but some of them are in exe format. how will i be able to run these files on my sd card?
AFAIK msi files are exclusively for the pc, if a mobile app is provided as a msi file, it needs to be installed through activesync or wmdc.
exe files are executables for windows pcs and windows phones, but if a program comes in a single exe file, it looks like a pc setup as well. but you can try copying it to the sd card and simply click it in the file explorer. if you get an error message, it is a pc program.
what you can do, is install activesync or wmdc (depending on your desktop os) on your pc and install the apps you want, on your pc. normally that would install them, the next time you connect to your cradle/cable. since you don't have one, you should track down the cab files. on windows 7 they are located somewhere in c:\windows\windowsmobile\. i believe on xp it would be program files\active sync\
usually those installer routines extract a cab file in one of those paths and copy it to the device to be installed then.
also, if you don't have the possibility to sync, you should make regular backups of your pim data, best done with:
dotFred's PimBackup V2.8 for WM5 and above Download (Mirror)
thanks sir. that would probably help me installing those exe files.
i really have a hard time maintaining ang pimping my ba without the usb cable. still waiting for my cable to arrive here.
but then again, thank you for the information you have shared with me sir..
I noticed that when I use my phone in usb storage mode on a mac, then drag a file from the desktop to the sdcard, a second 4k file is created on the sdcard, which is the same file name but with a period in front like:
._cm_supersonic-07192010-045042.zip
I don't see this when transferring from a pc, anyone know why it does this and if I can delete these files, they make browsing the sdcard in astro messy.

Click to collapse
The reason for the ._ (which is actually called AppleDot or DotUnderscore) is because of the File system Mac uses (HFS, HFS+)... and when transferring files from Mac to Windows or Windows file systems (Fat32, Fat, NTFS), the files tend to show up like this, it's a Unix thing which Apple has been using for quite some time.
If you want to get rid of this, you can export the following command. To make it permanent, enter this into your .bash_profile file using a text editor.
At the bottom of the file, enter:
Code:
export COPY_EXTENDED_ATTRIBUTES_DISABLE =true
More information about this:
Disable .DS_store files
AppleSingle & AppleDouble formats
Disable ._ files
Hope that helps.
Info is incorrect/outdated. Check out post #2 in my thread.
I have tried with file manager and found the files i was looking for in android/data/something but when i connect my GN to my PC (win7 32bit) i only get a few folders and files,
I have tested with both USB modes and I only get the basic folders such as
Alarms, Android, DCIM, Downloads, Movies, Music, Notifications, Pictures, Podcasts, Ringtones.
and the file manager reports more folders present :/
also the files i'm trying to access are within the android folder (which is visible on PC) but in filemanager there are 10-20 folders found in android/data that are missing on PC. PC only shows 3 folders in android/data
It also appears to be possible for other users to access the exact same file at the exact same filepath, why can't I?
is there a feature on GN or ICS that makes it impossible to access some files from the PC or is this a bug/flaw?
in case you guys need to know what files i'm trying to access, it's the game files to GTAIII
I kind of have a similar problem.
When i connect my phone to a windows 7 computer it mounts okey and shows me the files. If I create a folder on the phone from windows explorer, unmounts the device, I can not see this folder on the phone via a file manager unless i reboot my phone. This also applies the other way around. If I create a folder on the phone from a file manager, then mount the phone to the computer, I can not see the folder until I reboot my phone.
Is there a fix for this? Is it a bug? How can i resolve this? It's very frustrating.
MTP/PTP doesn't offer all the features the full USB transfer mode has. Search will help you find the pros and cons of this.
Workaround: Use an app like WiFi File Explorer or Airdroid.
So, some of my folders are not showing up as folders when viewed on win8 (windoze explorer) or on the mac through the Android File Transfer (ATF) app when I connect the tablet. It's hard to describe, but it's as if they appear as some sort of unrecognizable app or file (not a folder) when viewed on the computer through windoze explorer or AFT. The Strange part is, it's inconsistent. If I create folder using root explorer, it shows up as a folder on the tablet, but that folder is not viewable on the pc or mac. Same thing if I create the folder on the tablet using windoze explorer or the ATF on the mac. When I reconnect the tablet, the folders are not viewable as folders. Everything seems to work fine though; fastboot, adb, etc. The tablet is recognize on both platforms when connected and the appropriate viewer opens, but some of the newly created folders don't appear as folders. Anyone else experience this or know of a solution?
edit: nvm, I figured it out...
