I am at the stage where I need to choose a ROM for my new Diamond. I'm wondering, is a ROM for life? i.e. if you install a ROM and then TomTom etc, is it a real problem if you want to update your ROM in the future, because you would lose all the programs and settings?
Thanks,
Jon
They are definitely NOT for life.
Personally I update ROM every time my ROM provider (Thanks Panosha) updates.
Cheers!
Perhaps it should I make you a statue.

Yes, that's the only downside to updating your ROM frequently. But don't worry, once you've installed the same set of apps over 10+ times you'll be installing and configuring your apps with your eyes closed, sometimes twice in one day
To reinstall the apps, does it take long? Does Active Sync auto detect that they should be on the device or someting?

I install all my apps via cab files now. If it isn't available in cab form it's not worth installing.
But from what I remember if the app was installed via Activesync then once the phone is connected you can select to add the program again. All AS does is copy the cab file to the phone, install and then delete it. So if you can get hold of the cab you can copy them over yourself and keep copies on your device.
You will still have to configure all the settings for each app again.

Connect to PC via disk drive(faster speeds) and just dump a zip file packed with all your favorite apps, wallpapers, music, vidsss etc....
I call it landing site.
Then you just unzip and start installing.
And as my fellow Diamond Users have stated,

Hi everyone.
I just installed the new rom off of the i-mate ftp, installed it and have run across a major issue. When I try to install some of my basic programs like Agile Messenger or even Total Commander I get a message back saying: "The installation of <filename>.CAB was not successful." Nothing more then that. To get around this I tried installing the default_signed_disablesecurity.cab, but that will not install either. I'm stumped. Anyone here know what the problem is? Oh, i am installing these programs straight from .cab files, not through activesync.
I had a similar problem on previous upgrades when installing to SD card, when the same program was already present. Had to resolve by deleting from the card first.
Could be related.
Nope, just trying to install straight to the device. Don't have an SD card in anyway. I originally tried to install these files from my ext rom, then just from copying the cabs to 'my documents' and running them from there.
The only file I have in my ext rom that I added in that will install is the extrom_unlocker.cab.
*shrug*
try a hard reset (reset + fn1 + fn2) and reset before it start installing the extended rom customization. See if it solves the problem
Imate sp3i
- I have tryed the hard reset on my device but now i can not open it anymore it got stuck I can not open it in Windows or Return to the old modes..
what do i do now ? ( no connection to ActivSync either)
is there any way of installing or patching so it will recover it again !>?
let me know ( [email protected])

Are you using SPB Pocket plus software??
If so, un-install it and then install the applications wich you need to install first and then install SPB Pocket Plus at the end.

Just conncet your device to the computer, and re-flash the rom to the device, don't mind if the computer does not recognize the device, just reflash.... I hope it will work.

You're not understanding me. There's nothing to "uninstall." I can't install anything so far. I have everything in .cab format so i could theoretically dump it into my extrom for automatic install. It seems like there's a new security/registry entry that's killing my ability to install unsigned cab files.

Hi everyone.
Sorry for the missunderstanding, I would suggest for you to reflash the ROM again to your device as the installed ROM might be corrupted.
I would suggest also that after reflashing the rom again to your device you should un-install the anti-virus program if you don't need it.

Is there a way to get MSN Messenger onto my phone for free or is it a purchase only? I found an old version of Messenger for pocket pc 2002 ( it was via a thread at this board ) which after installation on my phone showed the MSN icon but didn't do anything. There was some update file which I needed as well to make it work but microsoft had deleted it. I'm just looking for messenger the same as it is on my pc, with standard smileys, etc, not one of those messenger clones. Thanks.

Thanks man. Unfortunately, after it goes through the process of trying to install the .CAB file on my phone, it says installation unsuccessful. Not sure why tbh. On their error screen, they say it could be insufficient memory, device may not support it, or that my carrier (T-Mobile) may not allow it. As it installs, it doesn't give me an option to install to either the device or my storage card. Any suggestions?

Excellent, I got it working! I tried out duttythroy's 1.80mb cab file and it worked. Well actually, it said successful install but there was nothing to find of the program anywhere on my device except in remove programs. So I decided to look in my device/windows folder, and all the WLM files were in there. I clicked on the WLMMessenger.exe and it went through the set up process, merging contacts and signing me in. Thank you JamminJaguar and duttythroy.
No problem, now buy my Nike.

Heh
Actually, I ended up installing this, uninstalling it and reinstalling it, because I did something wrong with the setup. On the first install, messenger, windows live services and and search bar all showed up on my phones desktop which was great. This time, it's not showing at all for some reason. Maybe because on the second install I decided to untick the search bar and services? So I've copied the WLMMessenger.exe from the windows folder and pasted it into my device/program files folder and that works.

im not and idiot or a noob, im tyring to post legitimate feedback on an android rom i am currently using but i need 10 posts so here is one more, thanks for this stupid rule! 8
I have been using Droid ROMS, MODS and kernels since the G1.
hi i am new to the htc hd mini and i am finding very hard to find good info on what to do with it maybe its still new, but how do i install apps i have downloaded a few themes/apps and not having any joy of putting them on the the phone sure i have put them on the memory card but can't install them from there i have downloaded the activesync (running win xp) and that don't install apps. so i am stuck it was quicker and easy to jailbreak the ipod touch and put apps on there. where am i going wrong ?
many thanks a confused hd mini owner.
p.s
now i know there is no compass on it (one of the things i was looking forward to using)
also while looking on youtube there was a clip where someone is doing street view or somethink like and moving the phone about and the street image moved too, also i was told that using google maps with the layers i could find a shop with it..i think this must be for another phone.
apart from this its still a nice little phone would be much better if i could get some of the above working.
App extensions are CAB it's like seeing zip or rar file on PC.
to check the file extension in your PC go to Folder Option > View Tab > Remove tick from Hide Extension...
move cab files in your Storage card then in file explorer from your phone click on them and if prompt Microsoft security choose Yes and finally choose where to install applications.
in case your application is EXE: connect your phone to your PC via Active Sync and then run the file from PC... Follow the on screen instructions.
thanks emrause i shall try this when the phone wants to connect to the pc this morning for some unknown reason it don't want to connect to the pc i have tryed a data drive and getting no luck and only once did i did it will activesync but nothink happend...almost pulling my hair out here...wish they would have made the phone a bit more user friendly

That's because you have extracted .cab file, before transfering it to device.
just like to say thanks i have at last installed some apps and i know how to work it now looking forward to some good apps now.
I'm not sure if this is possible as ICS has no built in file manager, but is there anywhere I can put an apk file that it would be accessible without one? Specifically I want to be able to open an apk to install a file manager as the first thing I do after flashing a rom, to avoid needing to go through the market.
I thought maybe I could leave it in sdcard/download but it seems like the downloads program is blind to anything in that folder that wasn't officially "downloaded". (I suppose I could upload one to my dropbox and download it via the browser, if there are no viable options). Also made a few stabs at getting the gallery program to show one but it seems to filter out anything that's not a picture or video.
Any ideas for places to stick an apk and get one of the stock programs to let me open it?
maybe email it to yourself?
but you would have to log into the email app to do that
but there isnt really anyway to access the file without a file explorer
Open your favourite rom zip, add your apk to /system/app, save the zip, push that zip to the phone, flash.

Yeah in general I'm trying to cut out the step of signing into anything and just restoring my apps from a backup before I need to cancel automatic restore functions (which I do want on and running once I do my own initial run of things).

I'm guessing this comes with the consequence of raising any apk added in this manner to system app level? Not that I distrust the apps I'd have in mind for this to do anything malicious themselves, but is there any danger of opening security holes by elevating apps not designed to be system apps?
What I've done many times is just enabling Air Plane as soon as I can after flashing a ROM. That's way I can install any apk I want.
Hope it helps.

Hmm but then what is your method for getting to that apk? If you do it over wifi that seems to defeat the point, no?
Personally I've found that it works just fine to uncheck the boxes for recovery syncing during the setup process, and then just re-enabling them later in settings. (Alternately, not signing into my google account at all until I've performed a backup). That way even if I end up signing into the market to download a recovery app, it doesn't automatically try to re-download everything else on its own.
I'm starting to think that my dropbox solution will be the cleanest, as it'll be a simple step of opening the browser and downloading a single apk every time at the same link.
I bet that the inclusion of a basic file explorer will be one of those headline items in a future android release. A nice basic functionality that the bloggers can rehash to death before anything actually hits.
Download the file manager apk over wifi and install the APK via download manager.
I do it all the time with Chinese android tablets with no market access.
Or Bluetooth it from another device.
Or just use the market
LTE EX Galaxy Nexus - 4.0.3 AOSP
Asus Transformer - Revolver OC/UV

Transfer by USB from my laptop.
Is there a way to do that in which the device will launch the apk you move over? When I copy files over usb, it only ever puts them into whatever directory, and I need a file explorer to interact with them on the phone. And then I'm back to square one, as far as this particular task is concerned (once things are up and running I just use the LAN option in ES file explorer and it's as convenient as could be).
you have the apk in your computer right?
connect the phone to pc, and use adb to install
'adb install <apk_file_name.apk>'
Ah. I haven't used adb since I first unlocked/rooted a few months ago. Guess it probably pays to be a little familiar with those tools; they don't even occur to me when problem solving these days.

mark thread as solved then, if that solved it
Well a completely in-phone solution would still be nice, but I guess if there were any of those they'd have come up by now.
I'll probably use abd if I'm actively working at my computer and a dropbox download otherwise.
Since updating to Kitkat 4.4 I've lost the ability to sync files and folders on my MicroSD card.
There is a work around provided by the dropsync developers where you put your files in the /Android/data/com.ttxapps.dropsync/files folder on your microSD card and you're supposed to be able to sync there. However I don't have the 'com.ttxapps.dropsync/files' folder in my microSD card. In fact there is nothing in there that appears to be associated with dropsync. I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling dropsync to see if those folders would be generated but they were not.
So I tried creating those folders in there myself and dropping my folders and files to be synced in there as well. When I tried to set the sync settings through dropsync it says that those folders cannot be two-way synced.
Does anyone have some advice for me? I really don't want to root because I don't want to void my warranty, but if there is absolutely no other way of resolving this issue that I may end up doing so.
Does anyone think android will change their minds about this and let apps write to the microSD card in a later update?

Did you used a system file manager app to create the folder (file manager app build in with the O/S)? you can't create with a third party file manager. Give it a try. If that's not working then you need....ROOT!!!

yep that's the system file manager. Tell you the truth, if your sync app already installed before you upgrade then you may have a chance, but if you install the app after the 4.4 upgrade then, most likely it's not going to work...just my observation.

Yes the link is good, but the files are not up to date here is mine;
1) Download this file https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...ixx-smp600.zip then unzip, you will see this file CF-Auto-Root-lt03wifi-lt03wifixx-smp600.tar.md5.

Rooting Instructions
1.Flash the CF-Auto-Root-lt03wifi-lt03wifixx-smp600.tar.md5 file with Odin v3.09 (put in AP slot, don't change any other settings, click start)
2.Let it do its trick! boot up then go to play store download and install supersu in order to update supersu to the latest binary.
3. Boot back into Odin mode and flash TWRP version 2.6.3.3 found here https://goo.im/devs/OpenRecovery/lt03wifiue/
That's all!
