sure, it's my pleasure to help others here.
I use wm6 with a 4GB MINI SDHC(Karmba 4.0). After i use bluetooth internet sharing with my laptop, i found that all 1.4GB data disapeared from my sd card. Instead of them, i saw 3 files which have strage name on them and cannot be opened. All these files are 0byte. Then i insert sd into my laptop, right click sd to check property, i knew all data still on sd card, because the property of sd card shows "1.4GB used". After that, i enable my laptop to see hiden files, not see anything from sd card again.
Finnally, i found a tool called "Final recovery". This tool bring the most of files back to me, not all of them.
I suppose, the internet sharing write all the internet temp files into my sd card, then all my data had been overwrited. So, even when i use recovery tool, cannot recover all of them.
Karmba 4.0 set internet cache and temp folder in the sd card by default(Karmba 4.1 maybe does the same thing). Thus, i think maybe this is where the problem comes from.
By the way, i really appreciate what Karmba did for all the user here. His rom is quite good, But i think 1.2 is the best one. The others really need debug.
Hope this information can help other people who have the same problem. Cheers.
It's nice for you to share about your experience regarding recovery.
However, I think it's worthy to point out that SD corruption could be caused by almost any program that access the card. It has been discussed many times in the forum.
It's actually a HTC bug, which goes unfixed. Artemis got a fix to its SD driver long time ago.... Anyway, prevention in my opinion is far better than recovery. Look for a program called "sdsentry" and it will notify you when the corruption occurs and allows you to reboot the machine to prevent the corrupted FAT image got written to the card itself. It will save your day. Try it.
**Disclaimer so that this doesn't get deleted. I looked at all the posts and tried to search, couldn't find any answers and I made this thread HERE because I doubt anyone in "General" would know what I'm talking about. This is more of a development question.**

Ok, I am actually having two problems.
1) Normally when I plug my phone in the computer and choose "disk drive" mode, a screen pops up on my PC titled "Removable Disk (J)" That's actually not the right one because right behind that screen I get another pop-up titled "Removable Disk (K)" and that's actually the one with the folders and everything that I'm supposed to use (the root of the sd card folder.) So I hit cancel on (J) and am on my way using (K).
Well over the weekend, on Friday, I rooted my phone using toast's way and then I went camping without doing ANYTHING else.
Then I come back last night, everything is working fine and I installed ROM Manager on there because I wanted to flash Pete's "BuglessBeast". Since my internet connection in my basement is super slow I decided to just leave it at that and work on it at work today. Well here I am.
Problem: Phone was not connecting to computer. It kept giving me errors and then asked me to Format my card. After about half hour of trying to get it to connect I said "fine.. I'll just format it and factory reset my phone and root all over again and do all this. Well now.. phone is only connecting to (J) drive. (K) never appears.
2) Also, after rooting and finding out that ROM Manager won't work for me I have to manually download the file, I tried to go into recovery mode and every time I selected "sd card: apply update.zip", I keep getting the same error saying "FILE NOT FOUND ON SD CARD".
Any help please?
Am I doing something wrong?
Is there a way to start over, all over again?
With the problem running (where you can see both disks), right click on "My Computer" and select "manage", then go to "Disk Management" and see if your SD card is partitioned or something. That's very unusual and should only present itself if your SD card is partitioned and it's seeing both partitions.

development is not for posting questions, q and a is for posting questions (hence the name)
you probably built an ext container before (partitioned the card, using one of the recoveries). if you partition the card, they will come up as two disks when you plug the usb in. when you 'repaired' it, it formatted the whole thing into one block. by formatting, you've erased anything you had on it. you'll have to put the files you want back on the card.

ive seen quite a few windows users on here name their file update.zip but have hidden file extensions turned on so in reality the name is update.zip.zip which will not work.
if thats not the issue, something sounds very wrong with your microsd card.
not sure why you had two partitions, J and K, but seems to hint at app2sd or had two partitions setup on the microsd card ...
my friend had one go bad on him yesterday, i had never seen it before but perhaps there is something defective.
otherwise, a reformat of the card, should bring it back to new.

Ok. That worked.
That was actually the problem. =D
I thought my phone was going all sorts of crazy.
Thank you thank you thank you.

Now installing bugless beast. Hopefully the phone will connect to my computer now.
Edit: everything seems to be running fine now.
Thanks joey.

In essence, I have an HTC TP2 running WM 6.5 Pro supplied by Vodafone here in the UK. I have an 8Gb SD card (unknown manufacturer) formatted to FAT32. On the card I store all my WM apps, plus all my folders with files, docs, pictures, video, etc.
On the card I installed Ubuntu and XDAndroid via the 2.2 Froyo.112210 cab
The Ubuntu worked fine, The XDANDROID looked great and on the face of it worked fine too, until I tried to set the ringtone. I realised I was missing calls and notifications because it was on Silent, and I could not change it. I tried to open my music and videos, but the apps said i had no SD card. I checked memory in Settings and it stated that the SD card was mounted, but gave no size info and would not let me Unmount it. I then tried to search media on the card and had no joy. In essence it did not seem to recognise the card.
I then bought another SD card, this time a Kingston 16Gb already formatted to FAT32, added all the files and docs, it too would not work. I have since been round and round the loop of deleting both SD cards, reformatting to FAT32 using both my default Ubuntu app on my Laptop, gParted via my Laptop and the phone. None work.
I now am still on WM 6.5 because I can not use the phone.
I have searched Google and the Forum, and other than formatting to FAT32 I have seen nothing that can help, but that may just be my searching skills.
It has been suggested that some makes of card do not work also.
Other things that I have found a problem:
The keyboard does not light up when I use it, which is impossible poorly lit rooms, etc
Can't find a way of viewing folders, I'm sure there will be more once I get it going...
Any help, please!!!!!
Format with the HP tool. Full format.
Keyboard backlight doesn't work in Linux/Android yet. We're working on it...
Can't find a way of viewing folders...? Astro, OI File Manager...? There's a ton.

Thanks for the tip. I'll try that. It makes more sense. I can't believe taht formatting using different tools can work as a FAT 32 is a FAT 32.... if not then what is it.
Can you tell me. Did you download to laptop, extract and then just copy the files on to your TP2 SD card....?

Either way, download extract & copy or just download & extract straight to your SD.
I don't think anyone should ever use the CAB install. The only benefit you get is a shortcut, which can easily be created manually.

BRILLIANT - WELL DONE... Yes, this is the answer. Not reformatting. God knows how many times I tried and the number of different tools and processes of formatting. None worked.
This worked first go.
I am now just going through the device to fine tune and no doubt will find any glitches or queries.
So, short cut for all readers.
DO NOT USE THE CAB, Use the compresses RAR file.
http://reefermattness.scepterr.info/XDAndroid2.2Froyo.112210.rar
Save on the desktop of your Laptop/PC.
Connect device to the Laptop/PC
Extract to the root of the SD Card
Take out the Programs folder from the extracted folder on the SD Card and put in the Root of the SD Card - this may clash with the WM Programs folder, but I use Ubuntu so it allowed me to merge the two nicely.
Then off you go, boot up....

I'm happy to hear that you had your problem solved.
AFAIK this bug just happenned with the latest version - the Froyo FRX03. I'm using Ubuntu as well, and the after I bought my new Memory stick, I formatted it with the Ubuntu Disk Utility, and the Cab - the Eclair - worked very well...
But like arrrghhh have said, yea people shouldn't use the CAB install. You gotta spend time installing it (and it usually takes quite long), and just to have its shortcut...

Maybe, all I know is that I had trouble getting any releases to work, and spent ages searching for fixes, which is where I first encountered other's issues with the same problem. All suggested a reformat. And the only fix that worked was the zip Maybe if I had used the zip before I would not have had all this trouble.
Now that it works, I need to look at all the other little issues.
Light on all the time
fast use of the battery
Seems to lock up sometimes requiring soft restart
No Blue tooth
No camera
and I can't see my music or pictures, though i can see all those for the various apps!

You really need to at least read the FAQ dude, c'mon these are BASIC questions/problems.
I did tell you to reformat, I didn't think the cab was the issue honestly - I don't ever use the cab, as I think it's quite unnecessary... But others use it just fine AFAIK.
this worked for me...thanks
i installed the cab first and i also had this same problem with the sd card. i tried the zip file and that didn't work either. Then i used the hp tool that is mentioned in post #2 to format the sd and then tried the zip file again and BINGO. So i think a combination of formatting the sd and using the zip file works best. thanks alot guys for all the help. it sucked not having any sound

Could be, but also suggested are gParted, which is a good format tool. The HP is for Windows machines. I use Ubuntu which is Linux, just like Android, so when I installed, it did so within WINE, which is Windows tool for running their apps on Linux. It's not perfect and in this case it could not find the USB ports. No worries though as I think the zip method was the ultimate solution for my senario

A little unkind arrrrghhh... The issues I raised in this reply were immediately after having managed to get the device working. And yes, I know some are in FAQ, though no solutions to most and many are not.
The power issue and the no ringtones options are not. The power has meant that I can not use Android and have gone back to WM for now. I used 2 batteries yesterday and ran out of charged batteries by 6PM! It should last over 24hrs per battery.

Well I'm glad you have such strong opinions about how this project should be. Keep making demands, it's very helpful...
Anyhoo, this project is for TESTING PURPOSES, it's not ready for prime-time yet. Have fun with it, but don't think it's meant to replace WinMo.
Also, all of your questions have been answered before - maybe they're not all in the FAQ, but most are. However, every single question you've asked has been asked before - use search!

Oh, yes, sorry, I am a bit forceful.
Actually, the device in Android has completely died. I have a blank black screen. Sad moment. I like the look, the feel and the way this project works, but it has a long way to go before it is a serious contender, sadly.
UPDATE: I plugged it in to my Laptop to effectively start over, and suddenly the PIN window appeared... We are back on. The ways and wonders of SW.

my girlfriend and i both have the same phone. I have a PNY 16GB sd card in my phone and she has a SanDisk 8Gb. I dont have the problem with android not reading my sd card and i used the cab file, but android wont read her sd card. did everything the same on both phones, so i am kinda thinking it is the maker of the sd cards.

I have heard this before, which is why I mention my card type in the thread
phone works fine, winmob works fine, if i use 4gb sdcard, android works, BUT
it android does not recognise sdcard(inside android),
if i use a 2gb sd card, inside android, the sd card is recognized.
When i use the 4gb is says sdcard not available,
format of both sd cards is the same, software is the same, android is the same.
for last: ANdroid is with both sd cards working, only inside android there is difference with both cards.
My experience and from what I have seen in my threads and searching is:
1. The SD card itself may make a difference. I have had and seen comments that some makes of card do not work or work as well as others.
2. The card should be formatted externally, i.e. gparted, HP's device or whatever to FAT32
3. The installation of Android should be done by downloading the zip to your PC/Laptop and then copying to the root of your SD card, then it tends to stand more chance of working.
I can second guess someone will contradict me, but I spent 4 months trying to get it working, including working with a developer... And following some advise this is what I found was the only way to make it work.
Give it a bash, but it is what ever works for you.
PS this is only a project so whilst the OS is absolutely fantastic it does have some things that do not work or work well. Good luck
Hello people
I have a 64GB original Sandisk micro SDXC to use with my NOTE. It used to work fine and didn't seem defective at all until the recent 3 weeks. When I 1st realize something is wrong with it, I was attempting to reset my phone to factory and thus I backed up all data on internal SD. Then I transferred backed up files to a place (well, at least I thought) they would be left untouched on my external SD. After resetting phone I wanted to restore data, open SD direction - Where are the files I just copied a while ago?? They weren't there. Like they were never copied. A day later I deleted a folder I didn't want on the micro SD, all good. After a while the folder re-appeared there, including all the content in it! I thought it's something to do with the file manager (stock "MyFiles" manager) and tried Filexpert, FTP client, SSH. I even took the card out of my phone and tried to delete that folder from a PC. Nothing helped. When I attempt to delete it is successfully removed and there is the ability to recalculate space usage statistics without the removed folder, BUT Soon as I restart/power off/power on/dismount/re-mount, the folder is revived. I tried to copy a single file, just to sustain my concern. The file successfully transferred and stored in card. I could see it on phone and use it, all fine. I then restarted my phone - the file was no longer there, GONE! like never copied before.
I though reformatting the card would solve the problem. On phone - settings->Storage->Format SD card->yes->yes. "Done" message appeared, but nothing really happened. I inserted the card back in my PC, ran the Format process and shortly I got an error message "Unable to complete format process". Neither Quick nor full format work.
Did anybody faced a similar problem like this? Please help me out with any advice, I'll appreciate it!

Thank you for the fast reply.
Unfortunately, that thread doesn't suit my specific issue.
The thing is, my card is acting like a sort of "Read Only" device, only with the ability to temporarily modify things on it, until next "refresh".
Format is impossible in any way I tried - exFAT \ NTFS throw the same error "Windows was unable to complete the format".

I was hoping to sort this without any special efforts like going out of home. I need to check if mine is still under warranty, but sure isn't any workaround regarding this? I'd rather save time or the 128GB may come out while I'm still waiting my replacement...

Mine was brand new, so I haven't got chance to even try it out properly But as I wrote on that thread, I've tried every possible option and non of it worked - otherwise the consultant I was spoking to wouldn't even let me do RMA.
I am running FrostyJB_4.1.1-v6 on my Tmobile SGS3 and from one day to the next all my photo's in the Camera folder are gone. I didn't delete them and nobody has access to my phone. Any idea what happen or how I can get my photo's back?
Thanks!
You have to get recovery software. I've had it happen to me once too on an earlier version of that ROM. It overwrote my dcim folder on my SD card.
Thanks psykhotic, I will try that when I get home. I will do the research but am assuming this software will be ran from my PC. This has me really stressed out, I hope am able to revoer the files.
As long as you dont write anything new to the card, you should be able to get at least some of your data back. Ive heard of people generally having good luck restoring deleted files from flash media.
No idea why it wouldve done that in the first place though. Id re-download and reflash the rom though.
Sent from my SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
So far I have tried one app called Undelete (for root users) and it found some video files that I deleted a few days ago but it didn’t find any images from the external/DCIM/Camera folder.
As far as re-writing I accidently did, I didn't notice the pictures were gone until this morning when I snapped a few and notice those new pictures were the only ones in the director/gallery. I haven’t done anything since then.
I been using the ROM for about 4 days and I had taken lots of pics since then and I had ported the old ones before the new ROM. I can re-flash it but am starting to think my SD card might be going bad. The only thing I have changed was upgrading to a new SD, the new SD has given me a failure once saying the card had been ejected (it wasn’t) I had to open my phone and re-insert. But it only gave me the error once. Then again what are the odds that one folder is being affected by the SD card...
Thanks for your replies.
Yea run it from the PC. I had to remove the SD card and plug it into my desktop. It took awhile to do a FULL scan but I got everything back.
It's running on my PC now and I can see it's working!!!!!!
TestDisk is amazing and seems to be finding a lot more that I imagined.
