Change internal images (call-background, menu-background) - HTC Excalibur

Made a New Background For Call In Progress Screen
Check this out. I made this adaptation of an old homescreen background. Just drop this file in your Windows directory, if you like it.

Looks very lcd screen friendly, will try out later today. Do you have the original wallpaper too? Did someone else on here draw it, or did it come from one of the original ROMs?

The pic I posted when clicked on is the actual size of the picture. I have been making homescreen xml's for a while and this was one of the old backgrounds for a homescreen with Fizz weather and Facade. I just altered the image so that it would fit nicely on the Call In Progress Screen. So, no one here drew the picture, and no it did not come from a ROM. It's just simply a pic for 320x213 screen that is altered for the CIPS picture.

You should warn people that the file you posted is really a RAR archive and not a ZIP archive. When trying to open it as a zip, XP complains that it's corrupted...

Thanks, will remember to say that next time. I totally spaced. Appreciate the heads up.

Yeah, I'll see if I can come up with some others. Maybe I'll get with Profezza about some. I'd hate to come off like I'm stepping on some toes, since Profezza's Alphanuma is pretty similar.
Do you have any requests or ideas? Any ideas are always appreciated.
Holla!

well, i found the images already, but i haven't found the referring registry-keys yet. (i know in SP2003, it was possible to change the Windows-Start-Logo by just modifying the registry and not changing any rom-files. is this possible for these two images (the green background, when someone is calling and the plain-white one in the startmenu-background.) I'd rather like just changing registry-keys instead of replacing those files. Can someone tell me, if these 2 images are given in the registry, and where these keys are?

Take a look in

well, thanks, at least i found the start-menu/menu background, so i can change from plain white to some other color or gradient.

I was actually going to make a .cab which replaces all of your volume, alert, question, low battery, and inbound/outbound/in call splash screens... .Maybe i'll do that now. If enough people want it.

no it wont. But im sure you can create a script to accomplish that.
All the .cab would do is basically overwrite the files .png, .bmp that are located in the windows directory. i mean i have posted the files b-4 on this forum with the original file names that mirror the ones you would be replacing in the windows directory. lemme see if i can find that post.

Here' they are. I take no credit for these. Guys over at moto forums created these. Just drop these in the \windows directory and overwrite the originals (make sure your backup the originals if you want to revert back)

Thanks for these (I know they're not yours BUT you did let us know they were available)!
I was never really able to overwrite files in the \Windows directory on my phone before flashing to Kavana's. I haven't tried yet. The phone was app unlocked before the flash as well. I've also never been able to see \Windows via active sync on my pc. The same is true even after flashing to Kavana's.
Here's hoping this goes well!

the \windows directory on your phone is a hidden folder.
You need to go to your manubar and click on tools-->folder options-->click on "view" tab and select, " show hidden files & folders" lick apply or ok.... you should then be able to see the /windows directory on your phone with exploring your directory via activesync

I hate so much to be negative but I've tried that. It still doesn't show up.

so you mean to tell me that "show hidden files and folders IS selected" and when you connect your phone to your PC or laptop via activesync and then press explore in the activesync application. and then click on "windows mobile device" . and it shows you the list of files and folders, that the \windows folder is not there?

Yup! It's something that's been bugging me for awhile now! Even after a flash of the ROM it's not accessible. My girlfriends laptop as XP on it and it's the same story there too! I can use resco though to move the files and I've already placed the ones you posted on my phone. They look great. I'll try to create some of my own and see how it goes. Say, is ActiveSync running randomly for no reason when your phone is not connected to your pc normal?

Ugly xpressmail icon in WM6

I guess this would be directed more towards Cingular (AT&T) users since Xpressfail is a feature of that carrier.
On my 8525 with Xpressmail when I get an email the today screen will show "Xpressmail 1 unread" and a notification icon will appear at the top of the screen. Instead of the normal text bubble or phone with a ! beside it, the notification icon is alittle Cingular xpressmail icon. This would look real good on a while background but on the dark WM6 themes it looks pretty goofy.
Any ideas on how I could extract the little icon image and change the background to black or transparent and then import it back in?
I never thought anyone else would want to know this
As a matter of fact, yes. But it's not too easy. You need to go into the /Windows directory with ActiveSync and copy the sevenresDll.dll file to your desktop. This file contains several icons that Xpressfail can use, amongst other stuff. Then you need to extract the XM icon from that file. I used MicroAngelo for that, and to create a replacement icon, ensuring it was exactly the same size as the one I extracted.
Unfortunately, trying to stuff the new icon back into the DLL with MicroAngelo doesn't work, so you need a binary editor, such as WinHex. In WinHex, you will need to find the offset of the icon file within the DLL, and then do a binary paste of your new icon into the DLL. Save it and make sure that file stays the same size as it was (245,248 bytes).
Then, using a task manager, shut down tmail.exe on your 8525 and connect via ActiveSync (you need to do this because tmail keeps that DLL open), and simply copy your new DLL over the existing one. BE SURE TO KEEP A BACKUP COPY OF THE ORIGINAL IN CASE YOU SCREW UP!
Power cycle the 8525 and send yourself an email, and enjoy your new icon.
Check out the screen shot. I hated that my work email showed me a Cingular icon. I wanted it to show my corporate logo. The blue one you see here is it.
Have fun!
-pvs
PS: you really should have posted this in the general Hermes forum, since it's got nada to do with WM6.
Thanks for that info, I'm gonna start in on the dll surgery in a bit!
I guess it could have gone into that other forum, but I assumed the ugly icon only had to do with the dark WM6 themes. I didn't try xpressfail when I was using WM5. My bad!
Cool! Good luck. The hard part was finding the offset of the icon inside the DLL, but I opened the extracted icon alongside the DLL in WinHex, and was able to determine the location by doing a binary search for a few bytes that I copied from the beginning icon file. As long as you ensure that the new icon file is the same exact size, there's no need to find the icon's endpoint in the DLL, just select the entire new icon file in WinHex and sock it into place at the start offset.
But since we're here in the WM6 forum, let's make this a WM6 thread ... Since I upgraded (and it's occured in BOTH WM6 ROMS I've used) whenever I manually try to retrieve email in my xpressfail account, I get a warning about roaming charges blahblahblah. Are you experiencing this minor annoyance as well?
If not ... which WM6 ROM did you flash? And what is your location? (I'm in the NY/NJ Metro Area).
It's only a minor inconvenience, but I'd like to get rid of it if possible.
-pvs
I am at the point of searching through the hex file now, so far so good.
I also get that bogus roaming message if I try to manually send/receive. Most of time I just let Xpressmail do it's simulated push to my phone so I don't see that message. I searched around a bit but couldn't find any options to turn off that message. Possibly a bug in Xpressmail and WM6?

OK, at least I know this is a consistent thing. I agree that it's probably an incompatibility between expressfail and WM6. FWIW, Seven is working on a new beta now. ( http://community.seven.com/forum/main.php ) I've thought about joining in with the testing, but as this is my corporate email, I don't think it's a wise idea. {Yeah, OK for me to flash experimental ROMs and do beta testing with phoneAlarm, but I shy away from this ... makes no sense, I guess}. I might change my mind and give it a shot, just to make sure this "Roaming" issue is covered. Maybe also recommend that they devise an easier way for people like us to plug in different icons.
Anyway, gotta get back to a budget now.
Later,

If you can't get it to work, PM me, and we could arrange for you to email me the icon file you would like to use. I'll do the hexedit and email you the finished .DLL.
BTW, I got in touch with SEVEN today, and they gave me a fix for the Roaming Message issue. Very very nice service and a quick reply, too. I posted the fix here in the WM6 forum, since this seems to be an issue with all the WM6 ROMs.

A couple of contributions... Battery Meter and Calibri system font mod

Here's a couple of quick .cabs I created for myself and decided to share with everybody else. "Calibri Mod" will change your system font to the Calibri font. Screenshots below. The second cab "NRG Battmeter" will put a line at the top of your screen that indicates your battery charge at all times. It turns blue when charging, yellow or red depending on the battery charge remaining. Enjoy
p.s. You HAVE to reboot to see the changes made by any of the these two cabs...
Thanks NRG! You mos def have some great contributions! I like the Calibri mod. I tried to alter mine to Lucida Grande myself by just dumping the font in the Window\Fonts folder and doin' the Reg edits, but it just looked too big still. Lucida Grande is a great font though. You might want to try it with something.
PS - What background is that you use?
how can i get these fonts for the wm6.0 offical rom can anyone direcet me to the right link to download and find out how i can change my fonts
thanks guys
i don't see any difference between the battery meter in your thumbnail and the one already included in kavana/ricky's roms. Is there something I'm missing?
its that green bar on top of the screen, almost useless, but probably visually pleasing
and when I installed the calibri font cab it would freeze up my phone periodically for like 10/20 seconds every 5 or so minutes so I removed it....i dunno why this happened.

Actually, you may not want to use that .dll on that thread.... it shows ALL image files in the pictures on the home screen....i mean ALL ! every .ico file from all directories on your storage card. all temporary internet files with imagees attached. everything! However, if you want to do this without a .dll fix then create a file called pictures in your storage card's root directory ( not My pictures...just pictures) place your pics in that folder and you will be able to see them on your home screen... the only problem is that if you have photos you've take from your camera. they will not immediately go into that folder, so yo'll have to cut and paste them in that folder as you take your pictures from your camera. I'm currently working on a way for the camera to put those pics immediately into that folder via regedit , but i've had no luck so far
If you look in HKLM/SOFTWARE/HTC/Camera/Image you can edit SaveFolder_0409 to Pictures instead of My Pictures, and that takes care of your folder issue I believe, the only thing is it saves the pictures file into storage card/my documents and not into the root directory. But I remember seing a place that does have the path where the pictures go to, but haven't found it yet.

Naw i tried that.... when you make that edit, what happens is the camera creates the folder \storage card\my documents\pictures and/or creates the folder \my documents\pictures if you have it saved to your local device as soon as you take a picture.. somewhere it still starts at the \my documents folder
i've done a lot of digging and modding with the registry in addition to editing the aforementioned key but i have had no success
i modded everything that started with \my documents or that started with \mydocuments\my pictures hell i even created another folder called pictures in the phones root directory and it didnt make a difference

Does the DOT DOT folder work in WM ? Can you specify "\..\Pictures". That way if it automatically prepends My Documents in either the Storage Card or the Device, the .. would take you back to the parent folder (top level) again.
May be worth a try.

Alrighty... First of all, which ROM are you using?
Well, no matter which ROM you use--you can access your homescreen options this way: Start -> Settings -> Home Screen -> scroll down to Background Image. When you get here, just choose which image you'd like to be the background/wallpaper. (before making these steps, you can search Google or Yahoo! images for whatever wallpaper you'd like) Once you've saved an image (preferrably .jpeg), use ActiveSync to place the file on your device. Click Explore button -> Windows Mobile Device -> Application Data -> Home (this is where you store downloaded homescreen images).
i am using kavana rickwyatt v20 thank you for such quick replys but i dont mean the background pictures but like new homescreens as in new paneling and everything. i should have said that in my first post sorry.
The Home screen is controlled with XML files which lets you specify the position of certain panels, etc. Here is a tutorial on modifying the file:

If you have any specifics questions about that let me know.

If I'm not mistaken, Windows Live has mapping and directions within it. It should already be a part of your Windows Mobile 6.1. Just look in the programs under the 'Start' menu.
I you dont want all the baggage of Windows Live, which permanently gloms all over your phone. just install "Windows Live Search". I think it is a better, leaner choice unless you already use Live Spaces and/or Hotmail.
I was wondering if you guy's knew of DLable maps because I don't want to rack up my data charges on the road?

Here's Some New Pngs for Your Screen

I am posting a zip that contains some of the pngs I use for my screen. In it contains a new image for the iconbar bluetooth.
Try them out. Just rename them for what you are replacing, or edit your registry to accomodate for your new pics. If you have any questions, please post them. (and No, I won't make a cab, because I am still not 100% on how to do it, but if someone knows how and wants to share the knowledge, let me know, I'm no dummy, I can learn quick, or make the cab yourself.)
Anyways, here they are.

Yeah...but what's the registry address??? (ex. HKLM/Software/Microsoft/CHome)
I looked around earlier for that. I couldn't find it. I'm sure it's there, but I didn't want to spend the time going through every single reg entry until I found it.
As it stands right now, there is NO need to change you reg entry. Just take the bluetooth pic and rename it to whatever your CHome iconbar pic is called. Mine should be the same as yours, I'd imagine. It's:
CHome_Iconbar_Bluetooth.png
Just drop this pic into your \Windows folder on your smartphone and reboot it. You'll see the updated picture. No need to edit the registry.

I believe you will have to find the image you want or originally had for your programs panel and put it in your windows folder. Then find the path somehow and type it in. Like I said I don't know, but tried. I would wait for a mod to help or someone with more experience.
Good luck and keep me posted.
