Java/Bluetooth errors. - HTC Excalibur

Help.
I've been searching all over for a handle on this one and have been singularly unsuccessful.
Initially, I encountered this error when trying to install GPSGate. I couldn't get any version to install and the Java version threw the following error -
... cannont be installed because the permission javax.microedition.io.connector.bluetooth.client is not available on this device. -58 Please contact your operator for more information.

Dis-heartened, but not yet suicidal, I took this setback like a man and promptly went out and bought a cat to kick.
I have now encountered the same error whilst messing about with Bluetooth Remote Control v.3.0 and consequently, the cat is looking worried.
Is there a way round this problem or is there some problem with the way Java support for BlueTooth is implemented on the Excalibur?
I'm using Ricky's V.23 with Opera.

i dont think you wanna mess with him...he looks like hes all business.

Now that's funny.
Not terribly helpful, but undeniably funny.

oh, you must not know me.
im useless.
sorry if i got your hopes up.

Okay.
It appears that the Bluetooth API, JSR-82, isn't implemented in Java for Windows Mobile devices - hence the problems I've been having. This also explains some problems other users have had with apps. such as Bluetooth Hack etc.
So: although Java is a cross-platform language, a big bit of the dictionary is missing for us.
Choked.
Anybody who knows more about Java than me, (and that's everybody), managed to splice the missing bits in? Knows of a version we can work with? A work-around?
I have heard a rumour that Esmertec are working on a new version for Windows Mobile but no firm information, so that's probably wrong aswell.
Very sad.
Sniff.

Some input or the cat gets it ...
... right.
So you all know how to implement JSR-82 into Esmertec on the Dash/Excalibur but have decided that, for my own good and a bloody-good laugh, to keep this information from me.
Okay. That's fair enough.
I would probably only do something silly with it anyway.
So I say to you, arbiters of all things known, how do I make the non-Java versions of GPSGate and something akin to Bluetooth Remote Control work on my Dash/Excal?
In case you think you can leave me twisting in the wind whilst you snigger up your sleaves, I leave you with the following equation -
x+y+a=z
Where x = A bloke
y = A cat
and a = A new roll of Gaffer tape.
What is z?
Think about it and see how you can help me, and the cat, in our hour of need.
I thank you.

So you won't talk eh?
Okay.
You leave me no choice but to answer the above equation by way of demonstration.
If you're squeemish, look away now.
In the equation; z=
It's no good belly-aching now, this is your fault. You made me do it. I didn't want to. Oh no! This is on your head. Hang that head in shame at your craven lack of concern for a fellow creature ...

hahahah.

linux is booting, now what?

Hi all (again)...
I've successfully booted linux on the xda using linexec. linexec is basically a pocketpc app which acts like a "bootloader". It's originally written for xscale/iPAQ H1900 series, and I ported it back to strongarm a bit. Kind of an exciting moment when I saw the kernel booting and working.
I've built a pretty minimal kernel base on the config for the iPAQ 36/3800 series. It currently boots, using a initrd image as root, giving me a serial console, with a shell. The screen isn't working yet (as expected) with both the 36 and 3800 screen support.
Now I'm wondering, for those who's been poking the xda, how much technical information have we found out with the xda so far? (ASIC, GPIO, etc?)
For example, there's this page i found that someone has maybe started on some work in the linux kernel to support the xda. How is that going? (Is Job de Haas actually around here in this forum, btw? How is the bootloader going?)
Right now I'm basically poking around the xda under linux, trying to find out more about, playing with /dev/mem and stuff. I'm quite sure there're people here who can do this kind of hardware poking much better than I do (I'm pretty much a software engineer only).
Any input/directions/suggestions/plan will be good.
Pigeon.
Some very tiny progress on getting the screen working here...

Screen is working almost perfectly...

Excellent Work!
I love Linux. Getting it to work on the XDA will be fantastic. I dinked around with the iPaq version from http://handhelds.org
Keep up the good work. Perhaps I can lend a hand, although, I too, am more of a software person. But I like getting my hands dirty. Maybe you can start a project on sourceforge???
linux on xda: please start a mailing-list
I think it would be the best to start a mailing list.
Therefore all people who are interested in linux on xda can be informed about new stuff.
It will help to find people with specific knowledge, whith a small mailing-entry.
Seems, that the sources for this project are in sourceforge
Here is the Link ...
http://sourceforge.net/projects/xanadux/
who is able to start or continue the job.
I am also willing to help, but not familar with linux at all.
Right now linux on xda is nowhere near done.
Current status in short: linux is booting, got a serial console, lcd screen is working but not blanking and backlight, no touchscreen yet either. Internal flash seems to be detected properly. That's about it.
I myself now is busy trying to understand the xda bootloader code itself. I know there are a couple of other people who have been doing the same thing to both the bootloader and the radio stack.
Let's hope we'll get more and more stuff going
How to help? Where to coordinate the activities?
It seems, that you personaly got it to run! Perfect!
So probably there is starting point for beginners to start and come to the same application level as you are with your project. Than whe can start to help you by your work and the just open jobs .... (Project-Page in Web with documentations, OpenTodo's, Mailing-List, FAQ, CVS and so on).
This would help to cordinate the activities !
Perhaps, if there is such Project-Page, people with knowledge about the open topics can be found much easier.
I am also willing to help, but don't know where to start.

Yes, I did it ! Navigate to Recent used locations in TomTom!

I finaly managed to write somthing to enable you to navigate to locations entered when adding an Appoinment in the agenda !

And there's more to come (when finished)
Nav2recent should work perfectly, just READ the howto and download it here : http://ppc.jhps.shacknet.nu/ Zip-pass is "xdatest"...
Navigate2 is downloadable too, but i only give out the password by mail or PM, since i want to know who is testing it
please give comments or bugreports !
(tested on WM2003 !)
Would you mind if i post a link to this topic to the guys at pocketgpsworld. They've developed a few tomtom addons and would probably be interested in this.
Be my guest, but like i said, i'm not giving the password for Navigate2 away to anyone...
I'd rather have some of the guys here test it first...
My final goal is NOT to make money out of it, but a FREE "navigate to appoinment location" tool available to anyone....
Why ? Because it STUPID that navigationsoftwar has a tool to navigat you to addresses you probably allready know (Your contactlist !), but NOT to addresses you drive to for the first time : APPOINMENT LOCATIONS...
If their willing to help : Great ! If they want to create a tool alike and 'hide' it on their site, or ask money for it: No way...
Just posted the link and hopefully it won't be abused.
The guys at pocketgpsworld have already developed and released (free) a tt5 addon called "POI Capture" which allows for quick saving of speed cameras of various types.
Good luck and i hope everything goes well.

[APP]Train Timetables tool - for Sydney (Australia) users

Hi all...
I've been developing bits and pieces of stuff on my phone for my own use and I thought I'd share this with you. Unfortunately it's only useful for people who live in Sydney as it relies on 131500.com.au (locals will know what I'm talking about). Although that service has its own "Mobile" version webpage, I find it very inefficient to type in addresses and not have it remember my last selection - especially since I'm usually already in a hurry if I ever find myself needing to check the timetables.
It's a tiny (but multi-threaded for uber-fast interface) program (30kbs) that remembers your last To/From train stations and will directly fetch the timetable for trains in the next hour in a WebBrowser control. And a single-button (reverse) that gives you the same timetable for the other direction on your way home.
Note: uses internet data! - but only a single page. Probably 1kb or so each time?
Limitations (as by the 131500 mobile service): unable to directly give timetable for connecting trains. ie: both stations must be on the same line
Requires: .NET Compact Framework
Compatible with QVGA/VGA/WVGA devices. But I'm posting under blackstone forum because that's the phone I use
Freeware - and all comments/suggestions etc welcomed. Many thanks!
P.S. At uni now.. so i've only included a crude screenshot. I'll post a proper one if i get a fair bit of interest in this. thanks
hey mate do you think it would be possible to do up a brisbane one?
If there's a website that allows you to look up the brisbane timetables I don't see why not. alternatively if you can source a soft copy of the timetable?
www.qr.com.au
are you able to grab it from there?
Very useful, thanks!

I've just sent an email to QR. Will see what they say first..
It's good but don't like the fact it connects to the net to get the info.
If you look at timetables, they are mostly always the same, so you can get the info currently right now and make an offline version in which the times are accessible whenever and whenever there might be a new timetable, such as the new Chatswood lines, there could be an update button just to get the new times.
Other than that, good start but definitely needs an offline version.

[Closed] Open WiFi Finder - Call for Beta Testers

Hi Guys,
I am writing a small application called Open WiFi Finder and I am looking for some Beta testers.

It is a .NET 3.5/OpenNETCF application that tries to locate open WiFi Access points. It does so by repeatedly trying to connect to the most powerful AP and ping a well known address for reply.
I am planning to sell this app on the Marketplace for a small fee, but before doing so, I would like to gain more confidence by testing it to more devices. I only own two rather old HTCs and it seems to work fine. Yet, I suspect that it behaves very differently with the various wireless adapters out there.
So please, If you like to help me with this, PM me with your email/device model so I can send you the cab to try it. It only supports Touch Screen devices with QVGA/WQVGA/VGA/WVGA. Of course, all selected beta testers will get the final cab free of charge..!
EDIT: I now have enough people willing to try it. I will let you know if I want some more. Thanks again everybody.
EDIT2: Link for download is here:
http://marketplace.windowsphone.com/details.aspx?appId=09c5dae9-3800-45d3-aaea-6ef7b54df2df
ok i am about to pm you. i am way excited to test this app.
sign me up pls
Ill give it a wirl for you
Guys, pm me your details please! Otherwise I don't have a way to contact you!

DAMN THAT WAS HELPFUL....thnx a lot now next time save it for urself...now honestly if one feel a newbie here is askin a question not worth an answer then....DON'T....but this attitude isn't productive
to avoid any more flamewars.... does anybody know of such a well made, easy to use app?
Have you tried this one?
Times Professional 1.5
http://www.mobiletopsoft.com/pocket-pc/download-times-professional-1-5.html Its an ugly interface, its not free, but there is a trial and it claims to be pretty functional. Includes synching ability with other PDAs.
Yeah, that was one that I looked at, but still, I'll be looking at this multiple times per day, I kinda wanted this to be a bit more pretty I'm a graphic designer, and tables and tree-views and drop-downs just don't do it for me. Maybe such an app isnt at all available for a WM device but still, I have some hope that someone has stumbled upon something like this
