[TUT]HTC Trinity - Complete Cooking Tutorial for Beginners - P3600 ROM Development

Hi everyone.
Attached tutorial contains the infos for ROM cooking-beginners.
Sections are as follows:
1. DUMPING
2. REMOVING PROGRAMS
3. ADDING PROGRAMS (Packages, CABs, creating DSM/RGU files)
4. ROM BUILDING
5. FLASHING
Tools you will need:
- base ROM (any wm6.0 or wm6.1 ROM you can edit according to attached tutorial)
- WinRAR (shareware) (or some other archiver – for dumping ROMs in form of EXE files)
- HyperCore Kitchen (first kitchen I began to work with, it has all you need and much more.)
This is made by Anichillus. With all the respects to other kitchen developers – I find this one most easy for use, and I will explain in details how to use it to cook ROM for Trinity. Please note – this is universal kitchen that covers nearly all (if not all) windows mobile devices. It can be obtained on the FORUM
- WinCE CAB Manager (shareware, for handling CAB files)
- XVI32 Hex Editor (freeware, for modifying initflashfiles.dat or modifying ROM page-pool size)
Added some screenshots from the HyperCore kitchen folder

Important rule is - if you are unsure at some step - do not proceed until you clear that out in the forum. So just read, read...

Sorry mate, I couldn't understand the fckn word you said.
This tutorial is based on Anichillus HyperCore kitchen. I didn't have time to try all kitchens - I used this one to cook Prophet ROMs and now use it for Trinity. It is very simple, with nice icons - and you are operating with everything you need from the Desktop menu. So I just shared my step-by-step experience.
I suggest that you try HyperCore with your base ROM and see if it will go.
If you get into any kind of problems - share you toughts here and we will help.
Cheers!

Thank's for reponse

Ok, great work.
I've got a Complete Cooking Tutorial using RomDonalds HERE
but it's in Spanish.

Good job.Thank you.

phnikola one question: if it work with other device? for exp P3600i ?

hi can any one advise me on a clean rom that will work with this kitchen. i have tried a couple of roms using the instructions and successfully built the packages, however my device wont go past the first splash screen.
thanks for the tools by the way

I am DEFINITELY sure that it is due to:
- removed .rgu files from the packages (check again if they exist when PKG tool dumps the ROM into SYS and OEM folders - and be aware that although .rgu files are removed - you can rebuild the ROM but it won't past the first splash screen after flashing)
or
- you edited initflashfiles.dat and forgot to remove first two bytes using HexEditor (as described in manual)
The ROM I used for succesful cooking (and making one light version closest to original WM6.1 and one version packed with the "commercial" software I use) can be found in this thread
Cheers!

phnikola,
Thank you for your input esp this thread!
What pda hv you got?
p3600 or p3600i???

As I know form russian forum (http://4pda.ru/forum/index.php?showtopic=42699&st=0)

Works allright for me. It's a bit of a shame that you removed NavPoint. As it turns out, I used it more than I thought. Good ROM, though.
G-R-E-A-T work. After soft reset it starts faster almost twice time! (Before 47 sec. and now 27 sec.! (Lite build 110607). Keep on it.
Thanks for this ROM, I just installed it, now re-installing my software again.
So far it feels great
I also made a note about this ROM on PPCWarez.org, and linked to this topic.

Thanks ervius, we are doing the same work, we have XIP ported to trinity, now we are reconstructing the SYS folder, overwriting files one by one... so this ROM is builded with "All Packages to one" option....
I understand people who do this... but it will be great if is there any thread or FTP where all cookers can get SYS and XIP, so we can dedicate to improve roms, not to make repetitive and hard work reconstructing folders....
sorry duplicate post....

PS. Ervius, can you share your 19900_SYS ? And explain, how you protect your All_in_one. Because, dump the ROM is impossible.
why more and more ppl like to make a fake core number?
there's no real 19701 by now.
and the 19900, seems like 19212, right? anyway its a real core, more advantage than the fake 19701
rom protection is acceptable, but what's the meaning about protect + fake?
I don't know what build is, shurelly 19701 is fake...
Ervius you're talking about cookers war, but if there is share of information the war end!!!!

agree'd, seems a bit on the rough side..
Sorry, I did not mean to offend anyone, ofc we had many great ROMs, many people liked those. But myself I simply never felt the rush in my device as in the time when it was running on Kozhura's WM6.0 ROM
well this is quite a pickle..
all i see after flashing the rom w/ the included tools
is this. i've got to try a few things still, but if anyone has any idea's let me know. i've tired soft reset, hard reset (clear all data in memory", remove the battery for 5 mins w/ a soft reset.
also this trouble
Kozhura
Any reason you have gone back to the large (130M) nbf format? (Is this to do with the FAT32 partition initialisation?)
Andy
working on using modpp to reduce the pagepool from 4.5mb to 4.0mb and reflash the rom to my hx4700 using the bootloader app.
i'll post when it's done flashing.

Here's a list of (totally inconsequential, but nice to have cleaned out) things that could be removed from your ROM:
- CWTimeOut.exe, CWTimeOut.lnk, and Blocklist.txt files in the ROM. These files belonged to Dockware.
- File \windows\create alarm Note.lnk
- cgacutil.exe.500~699~ARMV4I
- Various keys:
HKCU\software\HTC - removed - HTC task manager not used
HKCU\software\Illium - removed - Dockware not used
HKCU\software\WebIS - removed - PocketInformant not used
HKLM\software\RhinoCode- removed - TodayPanel not used
Today items with no DLL - removed:
HKLM\software\microsoft\today\"internet calling"
HKLM\software\microsoft\today\todaypanel
HKLM\software\microsoft\today\Pocket MSN
The following device drivers have no DLL associated with them:
HKLM\drivers\builtin\audiogateway
HKLM\drivers\builtin\ledmgr
HKLM\drivers\builtin\MIX
HKLM\drivers\builtin\RemoteKit
HKLM\drivers\PCMCIA\SRAMDisk

I can't get it to work either. In the meantime Kozhura has edited his first post to indicate that the new version is coming soon (the download link is removed). So, we'll just have to wait a bit more for this one.

i'd like to think of myself as a tester, adding to the gathered knowledge of what will and won't work with the devices.. i could almost be certain when i say that it's highly possible that some of the reasons behind the problems that people run into cooking these roms is that the hardware in the hx4700 might not all be the same. IE from different manufactures, different revisions, etc.. and thats causing some of the issues that we're seeing.. as some of us don't run upgraded hx4700 and some of us do as well as some of us owning earlier and later revisions of the hx4700.
makes it difficult for the people cooking the roms.
i've got faith in kozhura and andy their previous roms speak for their talent.
hopefully they'll keep putting out releases so we can test them and add to the information thats out there..
props andy and kozhura.
The best rom anticipated.

No, I use Sashimi from bengalih it's a far better solution, than UC.
Although take a look into my main rgu - there should be somewhere a redirection for autorun's sdconfig to the sdcard.
thx for releasing this
finally i can customize a rom to only have the programs i need without cooking a whole new rom
this is the way rom releasing should go =D
So far this looks like a good base! I just have to figure out why it keeps the same background image when you change themes.
Thanks again for this!

Yes you could port it over to Portuguese, but where to get the files I'm not sure. The language files for english are all of the 0409 folders.
Maybe someone with language porting knowledge will chime in.

Now, If want to use another ROm as base of my cooked PT ROM what do I do to the RU.nb file' I used a batch called NBHextrac.exe to extract files from nb file. I got 5 files:
00_MainSplash
00_MainSplash.nb
01_SubSplash
01_SubSplash.nb and
02_OS.nb.
In the cook folder the ROM files are
os.nb.payload
ExtROM.nb
OS.nb.extra
out.bin
romhdr.bin
Now I'm confused...

Now you should build your own kitchen, man... dump it and re-package. Why you can't use the base from this kitchen? The set of apps is of your choice, and it's highly optimized, you won't do that on your own.

I agree with utak3r, use this rom as a base, and replace all of the 0409 folder with the ones you acquired (at least that's the way I understand it).
It really is a nice base, and you can change anything you want. He has most all of the setting you would want to change located in the utak3r folder (open the rgu with notepad).
On a side note, utak3r, I really like this kitchen, I did change the tools to mine (well, the ones I am used to), and added lzx compression, very nice.
When I get it all booged up, I might have to release a "boog's darkvision"! haha
Here is a small preview of the dialer.
Thanks Fellows. I'll use the rom base that is in the utak3 files. It´s the best way to go

[KITCHEN] Hermes WM6.5 DarkVisions v5 FULL KITCHEN

As a reward for all of you for your tests of my ROM (over five thousand downloads ) I'm releasing the full kitchen for you to try out.
This kitchen is based on PlatformRebuilder from bepe and new interface from ervius. It incorporates the native AKU5 kernel, which has leaked from HTC's laboratories.
It's for smart guys - if you can't do anything with it, just flash one of the available ROMs. If you have some smart questions - don't hesitate to ask, but don't post generic questions about cooking! It's not the right topic for such questions...
I have one good advice for all of you:
as my ROMs a heavily modified, use "Load ROM" option and start from one of the predefined sets, don't start from the scratch! Later, when you get familiarized with my ideas of cooking - go on.
The same goes for adding new builds - DON'T do this at the beginning! There're 23017 and 23052 builds included, so you don't have to - and by just adding a new one you will most probably screw your ROM up!
Have a nice cooking!

Where will I find the ROM once it's cooked?
I'd also like to include my copy of SPB Mobile Shell,it's in cab form.
Will I need to convert it and where would I put it?
Thank you
Move it to the folder without any spaces.

I found the cab2oem
Once I do this to my SPB do I put it here...OEM\HERMES\COMMON ?
What about that error?
I only 'loaded' your ROM,clicked 'create ROM' and got that error.
I changed nothing at all.
There is a folder cecompr_LZX.dll but no file.
If I untick LZX compression I still get errors
I'm using WindowsXPx64 does this matter?

you have it in "Program Files", and it does contain a space, right? Move it somewhere else, like ie. "c:\cooking\kitchen" or something like this.

Now I don't get it - tell me, where do you have unpacked the whole kitchen?
c:\cooking\
I'll download again,maybe bad download?
I downloaded again and it seems fine now ?
I cab2oem'd my SPB and placed the folder in "C:\Hermes.DarkVisions.v5.KITCHEN\OEM\HERMES\COMMON".
I then created my 1st ROM
SPB is in there but not 'active'.
I think maybe I should have placed somewhere else?

Can't remember, but isn't SpbHome being run from the StartUp folder? If so then make sure you have a proper initflashfiles.txt in your package. Check also the *.lnk file - if it leads to the \Windows\MobileShell.exe.
And as for the placement... while it's ok to put it there, all the additional and optional packages should be rather put in EXT folder (but beware, it has different structure!), because you can't deselect those from the OEM folder.
I tried so many times the spb mobile shell into oem or into ext and nothing... it dont works... simply this cab is one of those cabs that cant be set as EXT or OEM by a tool....
But maybe you can make it manually... ameet or -G- has wonderfull tutorials for this topic.
If I will have some spare time, I can do it for you... but don't know, when.
