Microsoft SideShow Beta - It's out! Download link - HTC Excalibur

They finally got around to releasing a version of SideShow (this is MS's official beta, not a 3rd party). Tried it on my phone with Ricky/Kavana's v23. It works (no crashes yet)... some problems with browsing the media files library (content malformed).
The real bummer is that the home plug-in works does not work with the new 6.1 panel home (you either have to revert to the old 5/6 home screen to browse email, content, feeds, etc.). You can go to it as a regular app but that somewhat defeats it's purpose.
Anyone think that it can be ported to to work with 6.1 sliding panels?
Free download on MS's site without having to contend with RapidShare:

Thoughts anyone.

What does it all do this new program?

this sounds freaking sweeet can't wait to try it out tonight....

i get it working. the bluetooth setup takes forever and and is not very stable, also i can not get the windows media player gadget working (the main reason i downloaded this).

Just read the documentation from the download. States not compatible with toshiba BT drivers. Too Bad

oh yah I see thats cool

Ah bummer, looks like it's for Vista and Mobile not XP - doh!

Using Opera with LogMeIn works! and you can zoom in with the Slider Bar

Click on the computer you want to access and the URL https://secure.logmein.com/connect_axtest.asp comes up, logme in will hang displaying a white screen instead of asking for the user name and password, click on the address and replace axtest for mozilla so the address will be https://secure.logmein.com/connect_mozilla.asp and hit enter, in the next screen LogmeIn may ask if you want to install the plugin, just click Skip, and you are done.
Logmein uses the mozilla Java not ActiveX.
This means you can use the slider to zoom in and get a better resolved image to read those hard to see small fonts. If you play around with the LogMeIn zoom and the slider bar together you should be able to get the resolution you want
but the TP2 comes with a fully featured version of remote desktop?
I've used both and RD is definately the better performance wise, just wondering why you'd choose logmein over it?

Maybe it's my age, but one of the PCs I want to control has a 1920 x 1200 display and the text is really. really, small and difficult to read on the TP2. This option lets you zoom in. Also the font on RDP gets a bit screwed up betimes.
My version of the TP2 didn't have RDP, I got a CAB from this great forum to remedy that.
I agree with Tomo. RDP isn't always the best solution especially going cross-platform. I access several OSX, Ubuntu, and Windows interfaces using Logmein which also helps to solve the dynamic IP issues on some systems. While RDP is faster, it also leaves out a lot of control. The Opera browser workaround is ok but I still use the WM client since I get a better refresh and I can also adjust zoom properly with the WM Client.

fair enough. I actually also use logmein so am not an rdp fanboy.

Hey,
Nicely played Sir.
It seems to work well with Opera 9.7, if it's only Java maybe we can get it working on other devices as well, Symbian? or Opera mini or skyfire? hmh...
Thanks!

I did as you say above and get to the point where I enter my login info, but then it bounces me back to the blah, blah, blah message about "...A Windows Pocket PC 2003 or newer device...." and wants me to download the CAB file again.
I never see the "connect_axtest.asp". The URL I'm seeing / overwritting is https://secure.logmein.com/connect_ce_check.asp could that be my issue?
Please advise...

I can't get it to work either. I get the same https://secure.logmein.com/connect_ce_check.asp page rather than the page referenced above. I changed the link above to /connect_mozilla.asp and I got further than before. I got to the password login for the computer and I was able to select remote control. But when I selected remote control, I was taken to the same page telling me to download the CAB file.

Do I have to use 9.7 or will 9.5 work. With 9.5 i've gotten all the way to the PC login but then I only get a white screen that says simply "ip mismatch". On the PC it shows that a connection has been made though.

If I remember correctly, I used IE first (full IE not pocket) using this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=198923&stc=1&d=1245870498 to switch, it allows you to toggle between IE and PIE. Then downloaded the LogMeIn CAB. This is a one time only operation. Do this and then try the Opera fix. If this solves the problem I will amend the post to include it.
I am runing WM 6.5 with Opera 9.7.
No problem loging in with Java, it is a bit slower then ActiveX on IE.
I dont have 9.5 to try as it dose not have my local Lang support.

I'm pretty much in the same situation. I'm running Opera 9.5 and I really don't want to install the 9.7 Beta.
Speaking of the Opera 9.7 Beta, how stable is it? The last update was over a month ago. Are they're any release date rumors??

SkyFire 1.5 dead

Just wanted to inform everyone that skyfire 1.5 will be officially dead on December 31st. Guess they like the money more than those of us who helped get it to that point.
Anyway, I have switched over to Iris, and found it much better. just wanted to let you guys know.

This is not news. They might as well have said they would stop support on DEC. 9, 2009 when they released SKYFIRE 1.5. They have done nothin but lie to their supporters since then. Everytime they would release an update for Android they would turn WM support of for the weekend and say it was for maitanence. Then turned us off for three weeks for IPHONE. I can't blame em for goin after money but they could've been honest with us.
Anyone know any mobile browsers with flash support? I found one but don't really like how the videos play
It won't be until December. It is now. Skyfire no longer works on my phone. It simply gives me a pop-up box that says Skyfire will be no longer supported, but it will not go further. It simply closes out.
I loved Skyfire, but now I guess I am on the hunt for a new mobile browser.
[using WM6.5 standard at the moment]
Same thing here, I needed to get the non-mobile view of Delta Airlines website (for some reason, Opera and IE render mobile even though I have Desktop View set) and it said can't connect.
Strange, they only say v1.0 support ending, nothing about v1.5 being turned off. Unless the meant 1.x instead of 1.0, but that's not what they put.
So...any other equally good browsers (preferably with flash & other embedded streaming support) that will work on WM6.5?

Support for all WM versions will end on DEC. 31st. They will never develop another build for our devices. Our only chance of using Skyfire in 2011 will be by porting the ANDROID builds or somehow hacking the Skyfire servers but I doubt these things will ever happen. I recomend trying UZARD for a flash enabled browser but its only in beta release. I think they have also walked away from WM. They were supposed to release two versions which have been advertised on their site for at least 11 months but never released them. I don't think UZARD will turn off support but I would not expect another build. There is videos and reviews of UZARD WEB S & UZARD WEB H from back in FEB. 2010 but they never came out as I stated before probable cause they were focused on WP7. They have released builds for ANDROID & BLACKBERRY but haulted the WM builds. Oh well maybe one of the great developers on here will build a flash browser, thats our best chance of having a flash browser in the future that would be updatable.

This is the first browser like SkyFire I've seen that actually works and still supports Windows Mobile! I can once again view sites that require streaming embedded video and flash!
It would be nice if the toolbars would minimize to full-screen, but I can live without that as long as it keeps working.

I used skyfire for a while but since the release of the iphone ver and their servers broke, I switched back to opera, But now I can watch my flash vids in my browser again
Thanks for that!
Honestly, I will never use Skyfire on another Mobile OS because of how they treated their WinMo user base.

Android on HD7 (This is 100% real)

Pretty slick. I would love to see Android on my LG Quantum. lol
My main issue w/ WP7 is that the APIs/apps don't exist ( sockets for 1 ) for doing things like streaming video ( a la orb ) and offline gps navigation.

What are you talking about? You can easily stream video to a WP7 device. Same goes for offline navigation.
Is it real 100% ?
Because they didn't provide any method and this a month of April fool day,
and one more.. how did they do it with what HSPL ??
Source of this video : XDA.CN
try setting up orb & go to mycast.orb.com, login & try to stream anything... ie on wp7 refuses to play any container, even asx files.
& offline nav... which offline nav app have you found in the Marketplace? Right now, I use TomTom 7 on my wm 6.5 phone. I also have A-to-B on my Quantum, but that is not an offline solution.
Navigon has to be side-loaded ( 'cause I have yet to find North American Navigon ) and then tricked into downloading NA maps from a local web server... so not very legit there.
Don't get me wrong, I do like Netflix and Facebook integration in wp7... I'm just irritated that this device was handicapped w/ the lack of APIs for normal daily stuff.

It has nothing to do with API's being missing - all the API's you need (for these two purposes) are there. If I'm not mistaken there are a few Orb clients in the works - but my point was that you can stream to WP7 just fine. Heck, you can stream directly from your Media Center PC at home over 3G if you set it up right.
As for Navigon - you're correct, it's exclusive to TMODE, but the app exists and works just fine, again showing you that all the API's are infact there. The only non-standard APIs Navigon use are those to identify your IMEI and IMSI, which would not be needed were the app not exclusive in the first place.
I'd rather see WP7 ported to Android phones than the other way around. The hardware is so much better on the Android side, I'm not sure why anyone would ever want to do this.
Why would anyone want to downgrade the OS??
I love my hd7....but I would like to see this come to life. Fingers crossed.

I'll say do I want android
I stopped developing for HD2 android to get wp7...I don't want to go back. Period
I would love to have this as an option. I'd still primarily use WP7 but it'd be great to duel boot and be able to use Android when I need or want something that is not yet available for WP7. I'd love it just to play Abduction! World Attack and for Google Nav.
I would love to be able to put android on my hd7.
Please give me more options guys!

Don't see how this is possible without HSPL or Haret, he probably just put an HD7 front side case on some Android device.

No, it does not work. It tries to play it as a video (in full screen), but then it says that it can not play the video. Are you using a video format that Windows Phone 7 is supposed to support?
I don't have the foggiest idea.
It's a live stream that is going through a third-party streaming company (we encode, live, and stream to them, then everyone connects to them for the stream).
I've just implimented the code that they provided and it works for apple devices, but nothing else.

I'm not concerned about how things look or function, just what background color shows up in portrait and landscape.
In theory, it should be blue for portrait and orange for landscape.
Please test with any browswer that windows phone 7 supports, if possible.

Seems to work with IE9 (WP build 7712)
However you can't read headlines/Links in portrait mode since they blend with the blue background
Color changes (so does the font size but i'm guessing that has to do with whatever you tied to the orientation). So to verify above, you're good on the 7712 mango build.
Yeah, the functionality of it is meaningless, at the moment.
I was in the middle of testing some xml loading and decided to try some css media query stuff.
It's lame, though, as my windows mobile 6.5 internet explorer isn't using media="handheld" or min/max-width.

Windows 8 and what it holds for the future

Hey,
I just installed the Consumer Preview, and I think we can find hints to WP8 in it.
For example, various hubs found on WP are in W8. An interesting one is the Messaging hub, which like on WP allow you to chat with your Facebook and Messenger contacts, I think the next logical step is SMS syncing.
Another thing I noticed is that Zune and Windows Media Player is completely missing. There's a seperate music and video player.
Also, when I plug in my HTC HD7 nothing happens. It doesn't say installing drivers, Phone found, .. nothing.
There are also a lot of mentions of syncing throughout the OS, syncing with other devices and users. I think this will eventually mean that alle info from your Phone can be seamlessly synced to your PC and vice versa, making things a whole lot easier when you buy a new phone. Just plug in, sync and go.
There are tons of similarities too.
Multitasking is much the same, you also get a small preview window of the app.
What did you find?
I pary every day that they change their minds and not release it for laptops or PC's. It's greate for touch screens and pads though but just doesn't feel the same on non touch devices; MS will be making a big mistake if they go through with making people use a mouse and keyboard on theire PC's and non touch screen laptops.
Im using it with a mouse, and it's just fine, I dont find it hard or unnatural to use.
Some ideas are brilliant and very innovative, like metro style switching between apps, screens etc.
But at the same time it's like a double OS what is just nonsense. Two different IE10? Idiotic. No background image under tiles? Tacky.
I think they have to unite it somehow, it's still looks like a half baked beta. I won't install this stuff on my PC.
I seriously have no idea what drives these guys, but it all looks like a half way through.

You were lost because you hadn't worked with it. Same as if you picked up an ipad for the 1st time, a phone with a different O/S, ect. It took me about 8 hours to get the gist of the flow. Once i did though, man it's fast. I wish though the ep121 tablet i have had the resolution for snap though. That's a little dissapointing. Other than that, it's fast and smooth and actually now i wish the desktop was gone completely and everything metro.
Also anyone else have any issues with the USA today app? Seems to crash on and off on me. Other than that everything seems very stable and i LOVE the onscreen keyboard. Nothing like the crap that i had to use with Windows 7 on the tablet.
