Phantom Alarm Bug
There is a reported issue of multiple alarms going off even though the alarm is turned off in Settings. There is no known permanent fix at this point.
Phantom alarms can be cleaned up by following these instructions:
1. Load SKTools Smartphone Edition (Clean up and uninstaller utility)
2. Select View -> Maintenance -> Notifications Queue
3. Scroll to the bottom of the list and there should be multiple entries already checked for “Clock.exe”.
4. Select Action -> Delete marked
5. Do a soft reset (turn off then back on).Helpful Applications and Add-ons

Dopod 900 Extended ROM Guide (help would be appreciated!!!)

Alright,
I'm gonna start a guide for Dopod 900 Extended ROM files. I am using a Dopod 900 bought in Singapore. Information has been gathered from various sources.
EXTENDED ROM CAB FILES IN DOPOD 900
CABs that I installed
CAB-Customization-DopodAsiaWWE-<Insert Telco Name>-Universal-01-02-28Sep05.CAB
From the name, and cross-referencing with the O2 Exec ROM, I think this installs the MMS settings for your phone.
Signed_UNI_DopodTW_UAProf.sa.CAB
I think this also configures some MMS setttings/profiles. Can anyone advice me on which CAB files are really needed for MMS?
Signed_DopodAsia_113150_Conn_<Insert Telco Name>.sa.CAB
Signed_Conn_<Insert Telco Name>_113144.sa.CAB
Both are files actually serve the same feature, just that they have different file names. Installs some kind of telco settings. Can someone help with this?
Signed_AudioDriver_Patch.sa.CAB
From the name, I think it's some kind of audio driver patch.
Signed_Disable_ErrorReport.sa.CAB
Installs the feature (under settings) to disable error reporting. Useful.
Signed_SSD_Shortcut_WWE.sa.CAB
Installs SIM Manager and Enroller. Not necessary if you don't use these programs (but I think most people do).
Signed_STK_Service_318.sa.CAB
No idea what this does. Help would be appreciated!
Signed_Version.sa.CAB
Allows one to view the Extended ROM version. Not necessary if you don't want this feature (but I think most people do).
UPdate4.CAB
Absolutely no idea what it does. Help would be appreciated!
CABs that I did NOT install
Signed_UNI_AutoConfig_21100.sa.CAB
Installs the AutoConfig feature (under settings). Not necessary if you only use one telco (which applies to most people).
Signed_DopodAsia_113183_RemoveConn.sa.CAB
Removes the telco settings applied by the Autoconfig program I mentioned above.
Signed_DopodAsia_113173_Cuss_v32_non_CHAP.sa.CAB
Signed_DopodAsia_113173_Cuss_v110_tr_PAP.sa.CAB
No idea!!! Can anyone please help in identifying this? I think they're related to the telco settings...
CAB-Shortcut-Dopod-Asia-31Aug05.CAB
Installs MIDlet Manager and Clearvue PDF reader. Not necessary if you don't use those programs.
Enable_VT_RTPlugin_0727_2_signed.CAB
Installs Video Call function and Phone Skin Plug-in. Not necessary unless you have 3G and make video calls. Read that it takes up quite a lot of system resources too.
Signed_cvc-ppc-dpd-900-usa.CAB
Installs the Cyberon Voice Commander programme. Not necessary unless you use voice recognition/commands.
Signed_pIE_Favorite113144.sa.CAB
From the name, I think it installs some Pocket IE favourites. Not necessary.
Signed_Portal_113144.sa.CAB
From the name, I think it configures the Pocket IE default homepage. Not necessary.
Signed_UNI_pIE_View(Default).sa.CAB
Modifies some Pocket IE settings. What exactly... I have no idea. I used a custom CAB file instead - see below sections.
universal_stream_singtel_eng_signed.CAB
Installs a media streaming program/function from Singtel (a Singapore telco). Not necessary if you don't use it.
USEFUL EXTENDED ROM FILES FROM OTHER HTC UNIVERSAL DEVICES
Signed_UNI_Remove_BatteryIcon.sa.CAB
Removes the battery icon from the home screen. We all have better battery monitoring programs around.
Signed_SSD_BTUR_Patch_For_BT_Cannot_Initial.sa.CAB
Fixes some BT Headset bug.
Default_Signed_UNI_PictureEnhancement_reg.sa.CAB
Enables tap-hold "Save As..." in Pocket IE. Useful.
USEFUL UNSIGNED CAB FILES
Default_Signed_DisableSecurity.CAB
Allows unsigned CABs to be installed.
Default_Unsigned_Customized_pIE_View.sa.CAB
Credit goes to BeyondTech for this. It "change search engine to Google, smallest text setting, default layout, makefit". Useful.
Default_Unsigned_Cache_Tweaks.sa.cab
Credit goes to BeyondTech for this. Further modified it to tweak Glyph Cache = 16MB, Font Cache = 4MB, File Cache = 4MB and disable Start Menu animation.
Default_Unsigned_Customized_OwnerInformation.cab
Credit goes to BeyondTech for this. It customes owner information, device name and descripion, bluetooth name, etc.
Default_Unsigned_Customized_pIE_Key.sa.CAB
Credit goes to BeyondTech for this. Add blank page for Pocket IE key (just loads IE not attempt to open a particular page with it)
Default_Unsigned_Enable_ClearType.sa.cab
Credit goes to BeyondTech for this. Enable ClearType and Landscape ClearType.
RE
Hi Rommie2k6,
Not sure about other cab files but one thing is certain. If you can configure the settings of MMS/GPRS manually then you can remove auto config and SingTel-related cab files. I configure my QTEK 9000 for SingTel manually, hence, there's no need of any SingTel-related cab files.
Similarly for some of the registry tweaks. You can edit the registry manually and so no need of cab files.
I don't understand why you want to do away with video call. In the first place if you do not want video call then you should not have selected this Dopod 900. One of the reasons people remove video call feature is because their country or the area they're living in do not have 3G. If you're a SingTel subscriber the video call and voice call rates are the same for the moment.

Don't suppose you can enlighten me on how to configure my own MMS settings? I'm using Starhub btw...
As for video calls, I never liked the idea nor have the need for it. I bought the Dopod 900 for other reasons. 3G functionality is just extra.
RE
Bro,
I'm a Singtel user. Configuration like servers, ports and addresses etc will be different, however, the principles apply. If you can configure manually then you can remove StarHub-related cab files
StarHub & 3G... hmmmmm......not sure of its pricings
Why don't you do one thing? Can you call StarHub tech support to ask them to go through with you step-by-step for manual settings? Record the steps especially servers, ports and addresses. Re-post here if you've further problem

My variant of LVSW's aku .3 ROM

Here's a tweaked developer version of lvsw's CE 5.2.1413 Build 17913.0.3.0 ROM
note: this ROM is an advanced graft containing XIP components from Hermes, Universal and Wizard WM6 builds and as such is unique to XDA Developers. M$ has not released these components all in one place for Hermes yet. Some confusion has come up surrounding this when Shadowmite noticed that coredll.dll was reporting a different CE build than what was being shown in settings->about. Its no fake. This Rom's Universal base components are reporting CE 5.2.1413 there.
Now to my stuff. I'm an imgfs chef, so I've improved the GUI a bit...
v1.0 of this ROM includes:
Everything in lvsw's base ROM
GLYPHCACHE limt re-optimized at 32,768
Mobile Office 2K7
My ATI Imageon patch cooked in
HTC X-Button v1.5 cooked into the base ROM
Windows Live cooked into the base ROM
4MB Paging File
Big Storage
A2DP optimized for highest Fidelity (A2DP patch is not included).
additional apps: GSFinder+, DotFred's Taskmgr, PHM Regedit, SIPChange, Austinboy's Fieldtest
VoIP optimizatons: dialplan normalized for US calling (default areacode is 262 on 7 digit calls), connect over 3G as well as WiFi enabled
Live Search today plugin is set to use Google and works just fine when spaces are part of the search term
can toggle the phone skin between Video and Non-video modes using lsvw's TweakUI program
There are massive Bluetooth stack improvements in the build. The "Invalid URL" issue when streaming music over 3G has been fixed. And, you really can stream audio from 3G to A2DP while in powersave mode on this ROM.
As always, because its targeted at developers, this version has the Extrom hidden and all customizations are disabled on initial start.
Free storage memory is about 49MB and free program memory is 29MB. Displayed Today screen items have been reduced and re-ordered in this manner (note: the additional plugins are still present, just unchecked in Today settings):
Date
Live Search
Internet Calling
Owner Info
Email messages
Appointments
The installer will also upgrade your splash screens to the "Sun Rising over the earth" HTC theme from page 1. Your Radio, IPL and SPL will remain unchanged. This is a SSPL only installer so you must be connected with ActiveSync. Then, just execute and it'll take about 5 minutes to install. Vista users: be sure to check out this guide for how to make SSPL installers work on your version of Windows.
Download v1.0 now from RapidShare.
High speed download from Chamelion
v1.0 Release Notes (check back here periodically for updates)
Here are the known issues:
when you delete the last note in OneNote it doesn't refresh the list and the note appears to not be deleted until you restart OneNote again.
On the Today screen, X-Box changes the font on SPB weather and SPB Time to Black (only happens if "Enable Today X button" is selected). SPB has posted a fix for SPBWeather here
Unable to add programs to the X-Box exclusive list without reghacks. Fixed! Kudos to vp3G for uncovering the fix. Download the attached cab and be sure to install to your device if asked. This fix will not work if installed to your storage card
However, if you do install the cab, the newly enabled exclusive feature has quirks too: If you actually use this feature by tapping on an app in the Running Programs list, xbutton doesn't restore its icon properly on the today screen. You need to tap start->today to get it to display again.
If only the "Enable the X button to end running programs" option is checked int X-Button, the today screen won't refresh when you change the items unless you SR. The today items work normally if any other combination is selected in the button tab.
My BMW bluetooth handsfree system works great with this version. Very stable and better speaker volume too. Parrot Car Kit owners report varying degrees of success. The Parrot Rhythm 'n Blue system works flawlessly. Nothing yet on Audi handsfree.
Breaking A2DP News!
(Kudos to hardcore on this)
Joint Stereo is properly implemented in this ROM. If your headset supports Joint Stereo, try using lvsw's TweakUI program to set the following values:
JointStereo = 1
CurrentBitPool = 86
MaxBitPool = 86
Jaw dropping audio! Downside is that I get an occasional skip with these settings. YMMV for sure. Try the joint stereo setting first then tweak away at the bitpool settings. Out of the box, this ROM is set to automatically go to 70 if it can.
note: If your headset doesn't support Joint Stereo you won't be able to connect after applying these settings.
RE: 3G streaming in powersave mode.
The only application I've found that can do this so far is GreenSoftware's Freeware GSPlayer. It can also play mp3's in powersave mode.
Pretty fast Sleuth!
I have tried to download but the file has been deleted...
Need to wait a bit I guess!
thanks for re-cooking LSVW!
still uploading: link will be valid in about 15 minutes...
Thanks Sleuth!
upload complete
thank you sir!
Crap... this one's missing the ATI fix.... link deleted, I'll have the fixed ROM up in about 30min...
No problem Sleuth, take your time!
Fixed and tested. Page 1 link restored. I'm outta here....
Any non rapidshare llinks please!!!! Thanks..
HIGH SPEED HTTP MIRROR
thanks for this one!
lvsw and yourself are doing great jobs!
I'll report back soon with my judgement
a complete ROM was made even better..Thank you..
Does this have the cyberon vc and if so can it be uninstalled via the remove programs?
*fingers crossed*
masterful creation refined by the master himself.. good job sleuth
Great job Sleuth!
Typically I'm not one to post silly "Great Job"'s but this one is a great job! Very stable and responsive, with obvious attention to detail.
Extended ROM
Sleuth, I see some extended ROM files, I assume they are yours (?): Windows Live, X-Button, mHub-player, ..
You already included these files in your ROM, why add them to the extended ROM? (I know they aren't automatically installed after a hardreset.)
By the way: love it, seems fast and stabile and much free memory.
Perhaps for the next version also a tweak like HTweakC?
Any way of tidying up the 3G icon?
Have only been able to find the Black Clean Icon Patch but this doesn't seem to work with this release.
Apart from this minor cosmetic niggle, this is a very slick rom.
Well done & thanks Sleuth
Sleuth, great ROM.
I love the VoIP optimized part. By the way, just to share my settings: I use my own Asterisk box to get calls through and I added this rule on the dial-plan:
<!-- Universal rules -->
<rule pattern="(\d+)" dial="sip:\[email protected]$host$" display="\1" transfer="sip:\[email protected]$host$" />
In my phonebook, I have all the number updated as "+<country>-<TEL>". It works fine for normal wireless call with t-mobile and cingular, and the asterisk know what to do with the '+'.

My installer only loads os, mainsplash & subsplash. It doesn't touch extrom. Those must be left over from a previous flash that you did.

Dell Axim WM6 - XDA-Dev apps/hacks Tried and Tested

I'm starting this thread so Axim users of Football's (et al.) wm6 ROM can share what, if any, applications or hacks found on xda-devs that you have tried and recommend for our favorite VGA non-phone HTC device with the latest OS.. Also post which did not work, worked but not useful , and what tweaks were needed to get them to fuction best.
Note: Please note the original thread/post and give credit to the original developer/poster when you can. Also note what device (x50v or x51v) and ROM used.
HTC Audio Manager for VGA
I tested this version of the HTC Audio Manager and it works well and displays in full VGA. (Other versions found would not display well)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=327188
The only problem I see is that the remote bluetooth controls do not work like they do on WMP. Also, you better like green.
Tested on Axim x51v with WM6 A02beta
pBar by nncuong
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=284952&highlight=pBar
Task switcher/close-button/quick-launcher/wireless-toggler/system-info application all in one tiny place. Basically a magicbutton-like replacement for the fake 'close' button.
Just download and place the pBar.exe anywhere on the device. Latest version (v1.4) has problem that hitting the OK button on dialogs may minimize or close the main app if you select the 'Show Child Windows' option.
Tested on x51v WM5 A17, WM6 A01 and A02Beta (now also tested on A03 preview).
PocketCM Keyboard by Tene
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=321712
Alternative keyboard SIP with better feedback for "finger typing" (similar to eye-fone keyboard). Fully configurable to any keyboard layout/language you may need with word completion/correction and predictive text.
Note: You will also need a VGA skin or it will not display correctly. (Rename the zip file you download to .skin and copy it to the application install directory - '\Program Files\PCMKeyboard\' if installed on device )
Usable, but new versions are rapidly being released with additional features. (Currently at v 0.8)
I found a 'spanish' layout in the forums that I like because it has more keys on the last line (including . and , keys near the space bar). Even though it is a 'spanish' keyboard layout, the dictionary can still be set to english.
Tested on x51v with wm6 A01 and A02beta.
Contact Manager v0.11 by TENE (Not PocketCM)
Want a scrolling, finger friendly contact list (ala eye-phone).
I have tested the original Contact Manager v.11 application found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=314048&highlight=ContactManager
Unfortunately, this is no longer in development, and has morphed into PocketCM (also by Tene). PocketCM was designed for wm6 phones and will not work on the x51v (Error on startup). According to Tene, it will not work on any non-phone PDA.
Direct link to old CM v.11 http://www.pocketcm.com/olddl.php
Tested on x51v WM6 A01 and A02beta
Anyone try the other finger scrolling Contact Managers out there?

That has nothing to do with this thread. And no, if Dell never released WM5 for the X5 series, there's no reason to think WM6 will be released for it.
what about Internet Caliing (wm6 voip ) at Ax? it doesn't seem to work at all.

Are you referring to something like Skype?
this is not a app but it adds the clicks when you click on menus and stuff
tested and worked on x50v WM6 A02 rom was from the a person that work on the porting of wm6 to HTC Wizard don't remember
I also tested the home plug in and battery tray icon from the htc touch rom don't show up. (install but don't see them)
it maybe a vga compatible problem
I tried the Fix_WM6_Sounds.CAB file from above on Football's wm6 A03 preview. Works well. Adds the "dinks" and other sounds when clicking the menu. After CAB install, I did not notice the new sounds until a soft reset.
In the Football x51v WM6 thread, someone complained that there is no 'uninstall' of the CAB if you want to stop the new sounds. What I noticed is that after you install the CAB and go to Sounds and Notifications, the settings may be unchecked even though the sounds are activated. Just enable all the settings for the sounds (even if they are already active) then uncheck them. (i.e. cycle on, then off) By unchecking Events, Screen Taps and Hardware buttons, I was able to 'silence' my Axim as before.
Edit: Menu clicks are part of Events. After this CAb install, you can't silence the clicks without silencing all event sounds. See this thread for more info and two other sound schemes you may want instead of this one that adds all sounds back to wm6.
Note: It appears that all of these CABs add missing/new sound files and registry entries to access them. Fix_WM6_Sounds.CAB adds sounds to the scheme called .AllSounds. The CABs in the other thread add two more (.WM5 and .WM6). According to that thread, you can switch between them by changing the registry entry for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Snd\Event\.Scheme followed by a soft reset. You could also edit the .AllSounds key to remove the sound file definition for menu actions. See the other thread for the locations of the string in the key. (looks like its position 10 & 11).
This is another useful post about sound schemes.
Update: I created this Registry code that defines a new scheme called ".SomeSounds" and sets this as the scheme to use. The only difference between this and .AllSounds is that I set menupop and menusel to "empty" sound, thus eliminating the clicks on menu but not the other events. Note : you need to do a soft reset after importing the registry. Use a software based soft reset because for some reason the hardware reset button on the back will reset the registry back as well. I use the soft reset button on pBar.
Code:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Snd\Event]
".SomeSounds"=hex(7):41,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,72,00,69,00,73,00,6b,00,00,00,43,00,6c,00,6f,00,73,\

[REPOSITORY] OEM Packages for Use with "BuildOS" by Bepe

Okay guys, I didn't find a thread that has collected these so here goes.
If there is a thread and I missed, please direct me there and I will remove this thread and move it's contents over.
There are only 2 rules in this thread:
1. No WAREZ... Shareware/Freeware or add-ons distributed without cost by the developer only.
2. This is a repository, not a Q & A. Post your packages with clear descriptions and be sure they actually work (as in you have personally used and confirmed proper operation of them).
Note these will work with any Rom Kitchen Setup that uses Bepe's CreateOS Utility. All you need to do is unzip the package into the OEM Folder and it will now be displayed on the Utility.
1-Calc Lite (Freeware) & ActiveSync Remote Display
ActiveSync Remote Display is the PPC Device Side Component that allow you to Remote to your PPC when you're conntected via Active Sync. This is the later version (v2.03)
1-Calc Lite is the Freeware version of OmegaOne's PPC Calculator Program. I prefer this to the OEM Calculator as it has more functions.
Enable HSDPA Icon This changes the [3G] Icon to [H] when there is an active HSDPA Data Session.
Hey kyphur - i've been thinking of the same idea - and perhaps all the proven to work oem's can be uploaded to a oem section of the ftp. I say proven because quite a few oem's have registry keys, files missing etc...
Good to see you active around here again
OrangeUK PreConfig
Made this this morning waiting for Soccer AM to start.
MMS & GPRS work fine for me.
Doesn't include an EXEC command to run a .tsk today screen file like most preconfig OEMs do because I don't know what your you've included in your setup.
If you want to add that, just edit Preconfig.txt to include the line somewhere above 'LOCK:disabled' -
"EXEC:\Windows\cusTSK.exe \Windows\yourtodayscheme.tsk"
(without quotes)
sorry to be off-track for a second, but Kyphur .. is that really you? Welcome back! We have missed you these many months since you started us all off with the first XDA WM 6 ROM on this site! I realize you have been back for a bit (after a little searching) but I just realized it myself this am.
Post by developer or anyone?
Hi Kyphur!!! Welcome back!!!
Great idea!!! I have my own personal repository, but I am not sure if I should be posting packages for which the developer is around and may have evolved/improved/updated them. It would be sort of like stealing their thunder
Please let me know if something is needed and if I have it, I'd be happy to upload if the original devs agree with this.
Phone alarm is a paid for bit of software, but you can download the trial from the web site. I wish to package this (and add my serial). I do not see this as contrary to the rules of the first post, but would like to check.
Have had problems trying to package it, so would appreciate it if anyone else has managed it could give me some tips.... (if someone has done it it will save me ages of comparing registry changes etc)
Here are some new
Here are the new addons I built tonight:
-The well knows network wizard
-A newer version of HTC Audio Manager (Black skin)
-pbar (really great task manager)
-Reg tweak that remove the battery and comm mgr icon located at the bottom of the today screen
-New Windows Live Messenger build 1600
Enjoy
Package ok so far; my kitchen went crazy but those *should* be fine
Keyboard Layout TyTn
also for those people with Vario 2's etc ("English" keyboards)
Keyboard Layout 8525
for Cingular keyboards
Task Manager
slightly amended from the "standard" as it includes shortcuts for Reset, Regedit and Suspend
The Keyboard Layouts were made by Matt_Kr over at the Pandora project, and the Task Manager was amended by me to include the icons from VP3G's ROM. Thanks guys, and ALL credit to original authors.

Thanks for this thread!
MODERATOR EDIT: Content removed
Including your paid for serial number would make it Warez. If you package the latest version without a serial number then you are okay.

Requested Hermes 100 Mods Help, Thoughts and Advice

Hi all,
I've been a reader (lurker) of this forum since the 8125. I have a Hermes 100 from Cingular which I have played around with, as shown on this forum. I am trying to create a fast, multimedia phone, that runs on the Hermes. I am not a techie, like many of you who know how to program, but I do admire what you've done. I could use your help......
Recently, post the last HTC upgrade, I added Black Satin, the Iphone Slider, and SPB Shell 1.5 , Diary and Pocket Plus 4.0, just to see how things work. Some thoughts (and the questions for which I seek an answer).
Do like the Black Satin add-ons, though Black was never really my color, and the HTC Shell and Diary are nice (though with Pocket Plus, gets very bloated)...still, it runs very slow....how can I:
1. Find a basic HTC shell?
2. If I wanted to ad in an interface, would you suggest the SPB Shell 1.5 + Diary or do you think Pocket Plus 4.0 is smooth, fast and multi-talented?
3. Opera or Explorer?
4. I still cannot watch Youtube, and some websites that require flash to show videos do not like Macromedia 7.0 Flash..they say "upgrade!" Thoughts?
5. I downloaded and installed The Black Shadow Video Dial Configuration, to use 3G video phone calls. But, as I am on the Cingular network, neither my brother (with the Tilt, unlocked) or my Hermes can make video calls on the network. Advice?! This would be super cool.
6. Are there "optimal" cingular internet settings that allow fastest access, or unblocked ports for 3G vid calling, streaming etc?
7. what is the best solution in terms of Iphone like scrolling and unlock? I know 4.0 Pocket Plus has it...its just "ok"...I tried to install Slide2unlock, didn't work for me.
8. I also used RealVGA, but didnt' notice a considerable difference. Is it not there, or am I dreaming?
9. Finally, should I just sell this Hermes 100 (its a "new" refurbished one from AT&T, got it yesterday) and buy a Tilt, or can I do everything I want on this baby!? I've had this type of phoen for a half a year now.....
Wow, a lot of questions, and I know you folks could say "read the 500 pages of the forum"...trust me, I've spent hours in these threads. I would appreciate your help, and I've honestly been trying, but it gets a little too technical for me past installing Cabs and following instructions, to be honest. So, any help you can offer would be VERY greatly appreciated.
All the best, George
Ok, here are answers to some points of yours:
4) There is no flash enabled browser for Windows Mobile. Only workarounds exist for watching the flash videos off Youtube and similar pages. So you will not be able to see those pages in near future.
7)iPhone scrolling - I use fTouchFlo - it works in all of the programs but has its flaws, I use s2u2 on my Hermes with no problem. One more thing to note is that Hermes touchc screen is different form iPhone touch screen and what we have (including SPB scrolling) are workarounds that still need a time to mature.
8) RealVGA? You are missing the point - both Hermes and Tilt have QVGA screen - there is no way to get it to VGA (simply because your screen has four times less pixels than VGA screen). It will not work because it is intended for VGA devices not for QVGA we own.
This is a developer forum - if you want less technical focus you can head to HOFO or other fora... I know lots of people in here read a lot... but they do not seem to think about what they read and then they tend to have really stupid questions. If all you want is media phone go for iPhone - there will not be 3G functions - but the scrolling works - there is no hassle with third party applications and everything can be done in only one way - the Apple way. The WM platform lets you do much more but it comes at price - in here I think you should get your feet wet in some basic techie stuff other than installing CABS. Hope I helped at least little...
PS: I had a hard time being new to the WM too - it needs time - I think right now you do not know what exactly you can expect from your device.
Well, first of all:
Thank you for your reply. True, it is called XDA Developers....and I am, in fairness, not. And as for an Iphone, wouldn't touch it with a 10 ft pool - I like the flexibility of this HTC WM6 phone I have...but frankly apart from some BASIC at the age of 9-11yrs, programming is not a forte ;-)
I'll try your solution to the scrolling.....and of course, I'll keep reading, but I figured (a. You folks know this stuff so well, and b). I can't be the first person to come in with these questions. After all, It's not like I'm not trying,...I flashed something like 20 roms yesterday testing them all out! - on that note, I love your benchmark thread.
Anyway, thank you for your help and the help of anyone else who gives it!
best, George
Ehhm to put some things straight...I know even less programming than you do I have a very same opinion of an iPhone - this thing can not be called "smart" phone at all. What you stumbled upon is the fact that there are two basic groups of users of our PDA phones - first ones are user tha want their phones just work - they are not interested why something does not work, they just want a certain standard to work and as long as it does they are happy. Second group is geeks like me (and the majority of users of this forum) that are just happy to upgrade their phones to whatever newer and try it out. The problem is that for example cooked ROMS have bugs/issues (not that official ROMs have none) - issues vary from small glitches, memory leaks, not functioning buttons to random hardresets. If you go way of the cooked ROMs usually you will have to spend more time with your devices than the first group of users just to fix glitches. The other thing is that cooked ROMs and applications there can enable you do much more with your phone - for example resource hogging HTC Home plugin was not intended for Hermes, touch scroll ability as well and we can continue - but folks over here made it possible - that is what makes this forum so great. Butif you choose to go this way you will have to read, read and read again - because nothing is perfect. Our devices have limitations too - hermes processor has computing power roughly equal to Pentium 100 MHz (that is over ten years old processor for desktops) - so some tasks are hard to be adapted (that is why most of the programs we use are watered down versions of desktop programs - as well as screen size is quite limiting for browsing and so on - if you want a VGA screen than you have to count with: your device being a tad slower (4x more data to be displayed over QVGA) and also bigger battery drain (4x more pixels to power up). Said that you can get some of the things you ask for in your questions, but some are still a challenge...
Use vtap for youtube viewing. Just google it.
Opera. Definitely Opera.
Well, AT&T does not support video calls so unless you go out of the country its useless to you. Besides, your phones dont even have the front facing camera, so it would be hard to do anyways.
Mcorrie:
Thanks, I think right now, I am at:
1. A Basic Shell for speed and customization (not sure which yet)
2. Web Browser: Opera
3. YouTube Browser: VTap
4. Scrolling: TouchFlo or s2u2
5. Additional Scrolling: Possibly Touch Commander
6. Maps: Google Maps
7. Wifi Searching: WIFIFOFUM
8: Microsoft Office
9. Phone Dialer (includes 3G Video??): Unknown
10. Camera/Video Program: Unknown
11. Media Player: Unknown
As for Video Calling, I figured there was a way to bypass the Cingular restrictions, but I have not found it yet. After all, it is a pipe...so it should be possible, right?
Some more from me:
4. Scrolling: TouchFlo or s2u2 (s2u2 is only for unlocking! no other scrolling so you can use both))
5. Additional Scrolling: Possibly Touch Commander or Slither's Flash cube (the same effect, but free)
9. Phone Dialer (includes 3G Video??): Schen's Kaiser dialer 2 (or something like this)
10. Camera/Video Program: CoolCamera - this one is commercial, but best there is
11. Media Player: TCPMP 0.81 - freeware plays nearly everything: audio video, with plugin even .flv and so on...
Karhu,
Dakujem for the additions: I am also adding Radio 1.48 as that seems to be the most stable for Brooklyn, NY according to a June report....I'm going to test myself, but as of now:
1. A Basic Shell for speed and customization
2. Web Browser: Opera
3. YouTube Browser: VTap
4. Scrolling: TouchFlo and s2u2
5. Additional Scrolling: Slither’s Flash Cube or Touch Commander
6. Maps: Google Maps
7. Wifi Searching: WIFIFOFUM
8: Microsoft Office
9. Phone Dialer (includes 3G Video??): Schen's Kaiser dialer 2
10. Camera/Video Program: CoolCamera
11. Media Player: TCPMP 0.81
Now, I just need to figure out what else needs to go in this thing! Trying to avoid bloat, but don't want to leave out needed functionality! I think maybe I'll find someone's mostly stripped down Rom and just add in - its a start.
More comments:
I think if you are looking for less bloated system you should stick with basic WM5/6 look - Wisbar advance that can customize the whole look of the system runs on the top of the basic shell and thus takes up some precious RAM space. The same goes for bells and whistles like s2u2 or slither's Cube - function of s2u2 is to lock/unlock the device - but a part of the program runs in background as a service and consumes 200k of RAM even when you use the device - it is not much but as you proceed to customize the device the amount of bloat grows.
I think you should also look for some decent task managers: I personally like wktask and Quickmenu, but pBar is also nice. HTC xButton is quite a bloat in this matter. You should think what is the main purpose you will use your phone for - CoolCamera is nice but due to hardware limitation of the Hermes those pictures will always look....like taken by a phone.
When it comes to extra lite ROMs beware - they tend to have memory leaks and some Super storage ROMs even random bricking - hardreset needed to make them work again.
Several other variants:
Peek Pocket in wifi scanner (just one small exe)
Core Player instead of TCPMP (Core player is the commercial succesor of freeware TCPMP)
You should also consider some backup program if planning to fiddle more with your phone:
If you want to save your messages, mails, contacts and stuff go for free PIM Backup.
Hope that helps a little
1. Find a basic HTC shell?
What do you mean? If you want HTC TouchFLO-like shell (the basic one is TouchFLO 2D), get ThrottleLauncher. You can install TouchFLO, but you need to flash your ROM. You also can use Spb Mobile Shell 2 with Diamond theme (search Diamond theme for Spb Mobile Shell in xda-developers forum)
UPDATE : Now it's possible, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=541750 It's the TouchFLO 2D from HTC Touch2 (HTC Mega).. Download the "PATCHED MANILA FOR WM6.1 and non-HTC devices" if you have 6.0 or 6.1
2. If I wanted to ad in an interface, would you suggest the SPB Shell 1.5 + Diary or do you think Pocket Plus 4.0 is smooth, fast and multi-talented?
Spb Mobile Shell!
3. Opera or Explorer?
I usually use Explorer for short time browsing, and Opera Mobile for long time or serious browsing, because we must wait for about 5 seconds for Opera to boot up
UPDATE : With Opera Mobile 10, the Opera is not slow anymore, I'm currently using Opera Mobile 10 as my only and favourite browser on my Hermes..
4. I still cannot watch Youtube, and some websites that require flash to show videos do not like Macromedia 7.0 Flash..they say "upgrade!" Thoughts?
Download the YouTube app, you cannot view on the Windows Mobile browser..
UPDATE : With SkyFire browser, you can..
7. what is the best solution in terms of Iphone like scrolling and unlock? I know 4.0 Pocket Plus has it...its just "ok"...I tried to install Slide2unlock, didn't work for me.
Upgrade your Windows Mobile to Windows Mobile 6.1 or 6.5
UPDATE : Use Slide2Unlock2 (S2U2), it works on my Hermes (running official WM6 ROM)
8. I also used RealVGA, but didnt' notice a considerable difference. Is it not there, or am I dreaming?
Hermes's screen is QVGA (320x240), so you cannot force Windows to view VGA (640x480)
9. Finally, should I just sell this Hermes 100 (its a "new" refurbished one from AT&T, got it yesterday) and buy a Tilt, or can I do everything I want on this baby!? I've had this type of phoen for a half a year now.....
No, I think Hermes' body is more sturdy than the Tilt (Kaiser)
Epic necro. Another month and a bit and you'd have had 2 years!
Timing is everything when replying to a thread. Especially when it's almost 2 years old!
