Hello everyone,
I did a search already and I couldn't find the fix so don't flame me.
When Im typing, the [email protected]#_- and the rest of them are all mixed up.
How do I get the buttons to represent the symbol that they are supposed to?
Thanks for your help
Jim
Qwerty
If you're on cingular US..
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\OEM\Qwerty]
"Layout"=dword:263177
Several answers
Schaps builds a form of this into his roms. There's one by Shadowmite called HTCustom and I believe that the latest version is 1.7 (search the posts).
The code is freeware if I remember correctly so make sure to check out your options before deciding on one specific install.
I use Schaps v3.60a, which has it built in. Just look for the "Cingular" option under the keyboard section if you are using a Cingular/AT&T 8525, which I'm just guessing you are since I have had/heard the same complaint many times.
I'm using Schaps' 3.60a...I found it in Advanced Config icon where the HTC Custom icon was.
So it's Programs\system tools\Advanced Config. Then it's the Misc. Tab there is a drop down to select Cingular Layout for keyboard.
For my 8525
So, I upgraded my 8525 to the standard HTC WM6 ROM. It's all GREAT except that when using the hardware slideout keybard the symbols are not on their assigned keys.
I must have a diferent country layout somehow?
I've tried a few of the reg hacks that are suggested but none seem to work. Anyone have a any great ideas?
Thanks in Advance
Cingular has a different keyboard layout than anyother HTC reseller, if you have Schnaps you can change the config in advanced settings (not sure about other cooked roms) or you can use a cab fix (HTC custom will let you change it to). The cab fix is attached to this post.

That is an unbeleivably fast answer! Thanks a lot ... I'll try it now.
Cheers
bricking your device does void your warranty.
unbelievably fast because most of us read for a few hours before flashing... if you do not know what you're doing you can end up with a 600 dollar paperweight ...and wouldn't 8525 be damn cool paperweight!?
even if you flashed other devices (motherboards, dvd drives, ipod...etc.) but never a pda with a cooked rom, 2 hours spent reading would be a minimal amount of time before flashing ...all mattering on what you read, how fast, and how smart, including mastering the "search feature" ... its up to you to know what you want, how to do it, and not how to destroy your device.
...and isn't the fix for the 8525 keyboard fix on here about a gazillion times?
Closing Thread.
To allow it to depreciate instead of becoming a discussion on not reading or searching..
Question asked & answered
Im using the RUU_Hermes_CINGULAR_WWE_3_1_.57.502.1_6275_1.48.00.00_108-ATT-MR3_Ship.exe WM6 install on my cingular 8525 and all has been well for months.
I was having problems with internal storage space and pie was acting funny so I decided just to do a hard reset and start fresh. All was well except a couple weird things. My E edge icon no longer had the animated arrow syncing thingamabob and more importantly the keyboard works fine but all the special characters seem to be mapped wrong. They are all off by one key (for instance the ! should be the W key but is now the Q key)
What happened? I tried a second hard reset and still the same problem. Im not able to do a computer assisted flash from work at the moment so Im not sure if that will resolve...
You may have to flash the Rom again, which would basically be hard resetting (I'm retarded) or go to a cooked one. If you use schap's make sure you select the Chinese keyboard since you're using cingular. He mixed up the Chinese and Cingular keyboard layouts.

Different keyboard layouts for different Hermes versions
Issue: When applying a non-cingular ROM to an 8525 its default keyboard is different than the 8525.
The Fix:
[HKLM\SOFTWARE\OEM\Qwerty]
"Layout"=263177 (decimal)
this should fix it.
does the file "sym.0409.txt" in the windows folder exist?
hey thanks for the tips, I'll look for the file and check the reg asap
the thing is that Ive been using this rom for months without any issues. I also just upgraded to the latest official ATT rom and it didnt work either lol
what about the little arrows that animate from the E symbol that I used to have ?
I dont understand why I had these things after first flashing this rom and now they're gone lol

You RULE!!!!
I had a similar problem, and I had to go to the keyboard options, where you choose which keyboard you want to use, and there should be an option for what language you want your keyboard in. Yours is probably set to "English", and it should be set to "Cingular". I can't remember if this is in the default settings menu or if it's in my "advanced configuration" menu provided by my Schaps ROM.
But try it, I think it will fix ya.
I flashed to the htc release wm 6.1 but accidentally did a foreign version. I flashed it again with the US release and it works fine except the symbols E, D, X, W, S, Z, Q, and A are not working correctly. They input a different symbol.
I went to do the keyboard fix...
"Goto the following registry entry
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Oem\Qwerty]
There is a key called 'Layout' and it is in Decimal.
The default value of English ROM is 20409, and Chinese ROM is 20404 (both are in hexadecimal)."
...and the value was already 132105 (20409 in decimal)
I went ahead and changed it to 132104 and then back to 132105 but it is still not working.
Is there such a program that would allow me to easily re-map the keyboard?
Any help is appreciated!
schaps advanced config 2
Thanks!
I ended up just finding this fix a little further down the page...

[HKLM\SOFTWARE\OEM\Qwerty]

...it works, but now the keyboard will not light up.
Is this an unrelated problem?
How do I fix it?

No it doesn't fix the problem, any other place in the registry do you know....? Thank you!!
Apologies for jumping onto this thread, seems the best place really.
I've just bought a HTC Hermes, and it has WM 6.1 installed, using it on the Orange UK network.
My only problem is, when pressing ! I get @, and when pressing Y i get Z.
I've ensured all language and keyboard options are set to UK, however I just don't seem to be able to change the keyboard map to full UK, although physically the keyboard is correct, just not the SW side of things.
I was just wondering if someone could help me, if you let me know where I need to look, i'll be able to help you, just not used anything MS based for the past 4 years, so its a bit of a foreign object now.
Thank you,

Good job and thank you in finding this thread and not opening up a new one
Anyhow, have you tried the latest Advance Config Tool v3.3? Try that version and see if it fixes you issue.

Hi there,
I'm actually new to Smartphones, and the Tytn / Hermes was going cheaply online (ebay unfortunately), but the phone itself is excellent and is easy to use from back in my windows days.
Most is familiar, but seeing how far Windows can go before I want to switch to Linux.
Where would I get the ACT? Is it downloadable from here as a development tool, or is it online needing payments etc?
Thank you,
greee, u can get it at schaps website here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=317070&highlight=advanced
galaxys,
I've downloaded the ACT, along with a pocket msn, and neither will install.
Do i need to put them somewhere for it to install correctly? Just i'm only getting access to my memory card.
Thank you,

Both should install on main memory.
Are you getting an error when the don't install?
So far kareem, i'm getting an XML output for the ACT, and for Pocket MSN it reports:
Setup Is Not a valid Pocket PC application.
With the ACT, i've no option to install, although the setup file I have was meant to be a cab file.
Thank you,
Scratch all that, got both PocketMSN and ACT installed today! For some reason the keyboard was in German, so switched that back!
Thanks guys!
Now got to find uber cool stuffs for my phone...
what's the value for an azerty keyboard
Hi Folks,
I am replacing my keyboard on my AT&T Tilt, note I am saying keyboard and not the keypad on front of phone.
I have made one such post on this on xda already without much success in response, maybe because I couched the question wrong, not understanding what I really wanted to say.
So, here I go again.
I am looking to install a TyTnII keyboard on my AT& Tilt. I may purchase from here:
https://www.gsm4world.us/htc-tytn-ii-p4550-oem-keyboard-w-flex-d-01433_297.html
What do I need to do to make this keyboard compatible with my Tilt? I have seen threads talking around this subject but cannot get specifics on the TyTnII keyboard drivers (ROM) for use on the Tilt. I have seen some posts suggesting installing a ROM, but it seems these posts suggest flashing the Tilt with an entire TyTnII ROM, not just the keyboard ROM which I want to avoid. If someone has just such a suitable ROM - TyTnII keyboard ROM for use on a TILT, I would be so appreciative.
I have seen some posts suggesting editing the Tilt registry. But what do you use to edit the registry? I would prefer this option if the registry editor was freely available. Could someone please advise where I can find a regsitry editor for free or how else I could effect this? What is the correct registry edit?
Thanks all.
