But this wont be permanent will it? - i.e. I never want any listed at all.
When WM don't see any shortcuts in above folder, then it wont create recent programs list
Disabling recent programs in Start Menu
Does anyone have a registry fix for this. I don't want to loose everything from the Start Menu|Programs folder. I just want to permanently stop recently used programs showing in the start menu.

The result of this is that I have unused 'Recent Programs' and 'Programs' items on my Start menu and everytime I install a new program I have to manually move it to the 'Main' folder in order to disable recently used programs showing in the Start Menu.
There must be a more elegant registry solution to this.

Since today, I haven't heard for another way to manage it.
Hope that someone knows for a better solution.
Problem solved. Delete registry key (and all sub keys):HKCU-software- Microsoft - Shell - TaskSwitch.
Then soft reset device immediately, don't even close registry editor before resetting.
Viola!
Doh!
Ok, this only clears the recently used items list. It will repopulate.
Back to the drawing board.
I bit the bullet and purchased ($9.99) WisBar Advance 3. This does the job and has a number of other nice Start Menu related features. Works well with Dutty's Xtreme 2.3 ROM.

I have installed a program which does not appear in Installed Programs.
To run it you have to tap an .exe file which is in a directory on the storage card.
Is there a way to create a shortcut and preferably an icon that I can add to the Programs page in the Touchflow.
TIA
Paul
I had the same issue (with Tomtom). I just made a short cut to the .exe in the folder the program was in, and moved that shortcut to Windows -> Start Menu -> Programs. I did this using Active sync.
Hi Gunther
I have just tried that however when I right click the .exe in file on the phone or in Active Sync I do not get the option to create a shortcut - just the Cut, Copy, rename, Delete etc.
Did you take a copy of the .exe file or find another way to do the shortcut?
Thanks
Paul
using File Explorer in your HTC Touch HD right click on the target and chose copy option
go to the destination folder right click again and chose pase shortcut
I am not having any joy. When I right click and copy the .exe file and then go to the Windows -> Start Menu -> Programs and then right Click again the option to paste as shortcut is greyed out. If I paste the .exe file then it appears as a program in the list of programs however it does not run.
The shortcuts are .lnk files. I presume they point to the .exe/program files location however I cannot open them to see what is inside.
Thanks everyone - I did it. Just went to the Start Menu and then used Menu - Paste shortcut.
If you've already got File Explorer installed, just install the file explorer extension.

My first post on xda.
Tools > File Explorer > Windows > YouTube (444K sized file will do just fine)
Copy the file and paste shortcut in Start Menu> Programs
The next step is very important.
Goto:Settings >Connections>Connections>Advanced Tab: Select Network button: Change bottom drop down to Media Net. Both drop downs should be Media Net.
Thats it.

Hi,
I did as you stated but my YouTube program does not launch from within the start menu, it just stays highlighted when I click on it.
I did a soft reset and nothing changed.
It works if I go to Tools > File Explorer > Windows > YouTube 444K and click on the file.
Any one else had this problem and know how to fix it ?
Thanks
It works for me, but it take forever to connect and sometimes just end up ERROR can not play. I spend more time watching the 'connecting' on the screen than the video I want to watch.
The only YouTube file that works for my Tilt2 was downloaded from google mobile- by using the MS IE, not Opera. The only issue (minor) i get is when i select a video file- it will go into landscape opposite the native landscape of the Tilt2. not a biggie. However, it works fine when using ''changescreen" app (enabled).

I feel pretty silly...
I was able to find the YouTube files on my phone. I copied them over to "Program Files" (which, as I've read here, isn't the way to go about it) So I deleted the files I copied over to there. Problem is, it deleted both the "copies" and the original files :/
How can I retrieve the Tilt 2's version of the YouTube application without completely wiping out my phone?
Thanks for any and all help.
no sound on youtube app
I was able to copy the shortcut over and when I double click on it the client works but there is no sound. What gives?

You don't paste it to the menu directly, you have to paste it in /Windows/start menu/programs directory on your phone
Youtube app in start menu
i had the same problem puttin the Youtube app that comes with the Tilt 2 on the start menu and actually getting it to work, but after a whole day of messin with the settings, i finally got it on the start menu, and workin!
first what i did was
opened the file explorer<windows
from here you will sort by name so it appears from a to z(only if u need to because mine showed from z to a)
then you will scroll down to the Youtube folder, click and hold down to copy.
after you copy it you will paste it under the program files (my device<program files)
after that you will need to copy the actuall app and add it to the start menu.
the app will be found under the my device<windows: scroll very closely to the bottom of the list to find the app, click on the one that says 25b. click and hold on it then copy it and paste it under the start menu folder at the top of the windows<programs.
now when you click your start menu there should be the youtube app and should work. i have only tested it under my wifi settings at the house but it should work on 3g.
GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE!
and if you want to rearrange the start menu, i recommened downloading the JWMD-Icon-Changer at:
pocketpc-freeware.net/jwmd-icon-changer-get-12511.html
i downloaded it fomr my pc and sync my phone to my pc after saving the app and draggin and droppin it into my phones file explorer and then installed it from there.
we already had it on the stock rom? I downloaded it from google mobile with google maps :X...anyways, no probs with the way I did it...idk
thanx vic1307, your method worked perfectly!

Any reason we don't cut and Paste, instead of copying...doubling the file?
You can't "paste" into the start menu folder....you can't paste into any folder that is already full, because there is no empty space that you can place your cursor on and hold to get menu to pop up.
If you try it ends up clicking on an item in the folder, because there are no empty spots to click on in the folder..
This is one thing that really annoys me with wm6.5....thank the idiot that designed this feature.
ok, I just cut everything out of the start up menu file, and pasted the youtube file into the blank folder, then pasted everything else back into the start up menu.
annoying, but affective. Deleted Google's youtube. Like the stock look one much better. ;D
Post #8!!! That is your answer!!!! Do NOT COPY the exe file to the start menu!! Either copy the YouTube.lnk file to the start menu, or send the exe file to the start menu as a short cut. Also, if you are using the native file explorer, then you may not see the .lnk or .exe file extensions to know the difference.
You should see the files in this order:
*at$t rom*
YouTube.exe (with YT icon) 458k
YouTube.exe.0409 (windows icon) 10.9k
YouTube.lnk (YT icon) 25b <-- file size should be another clue it is just a short cut.
You want a copy of the .lnk file in the start menu.
There are two YouTube apps, one is an HTC app that is hidden on the phone, the other is Google's and it has to be downloaded. I like the HTC app better myself btw.
When pressing the start menu you obviously get a list of the shortcuts in the \windows\start menu\programs folder. However, where in the heck is the "Today" link coming from that seems to only close the start menu? I want that puppy gone Registry? I don't know where to even start looking there
Not sure how to get it gone but I think if you tap-N-hold you can send it to the bottom

I would like to remove it also. Completely useless when you have a home key.
have u tried going to /windows/startmenu looking for this icon with file explorer and choosing "read only" and "hidden" under properties?
Try going to HKLM\Security\Shell\StartInfo\Start and deleting the Today group of registry keys. Don't forget to soft reset.

ok found a work around use hcomber to change the icon to a transparent png LMAO. I know i know, not ideal but if you move it to the bottom of the start menu and make it invisible well.... out of sight out of mind. This isn't solved obviously, but its a start.
Hi Mallman
This is my workaround: there's more icons than the home that I don't want to see, so I added a folder in the start menu and I moved all of them to this folder I called Unused.
This way I don't remove or tamper with icons that I might need later, and I have a smaller menu.
By the way I didn't test the possibility to make this folder hidden, here's another possibility if you want to explore it...
Has a fix for this ever been found or is this a dead thread?

Hi all
after some great advice from miami_son I have managed to sort out the mess that was my programs start up page.
sadly i also managed to delete the link file for the file explorer program
try as i might (and being very thick) i cant get it back.
can anyone point me in the direction (or tell me how to do it) to get the file link back
many thanks in advance
Use Total Commander to locate fexplore.exe in the \windows directory and select it with a single click. Click on file in lower left corner of Total Commander to bring up the menu. Click on >>>>>> and then click on create shortcut. Use the tree function to place the file in \windows\startmenu\programs.
Follow Kevin's instructions, works for any .exe file you want to create a shortcut for. But I would just skip creating one for that particular file. For one, Total Commander is a much better file explorer and can do more, and the OEM file explorer can cause you to delete things by accident if you aren't real careful.

I'm not sure, but I think that many programs use the file explorer to open files, rather than opening it themselves. Or at least this appears to be the case.

He didn't delete the program, just the shortcut for it. Once you have Total Commander installed you no longer need the stock shortcut. Like I said, TC is a much better file explorer.

The shortcuts (*.lnk files) are located in \Windows\Start Menu\Programs.
The icons for the programs are located (normally) in \Windows.

Any file browser application on the device. File Explorer is on every ROM. You could even do it from your PC if you rather.
Install Total Commander. Unzip file, connect device to PC, run the EXE file.

It sounds like you're just trying to remove some links from your start menu. Is that correct? If it is, then just navigate to \Windows\Start Menu\Programs and delete the ones you don't want to appear in the Start Menu. In File Explorer, tap and hold on the one you want to delete until the menu pops up. Select delete and then tap yes. In Total Commander, do the exact same thing. I don't think I can explain that better without making a video of it.
well i would like to delete the progs but I was under the impression that they were installed on the rom and, as such, they cannot be deleted

i will try to combine (my bad) memory and the instructions and see where i can go

You can't uninstall apps that are cooked into the ROM whether you use stock or custom ROMs. Deleting the link files as I've instructed will prevent them from showing up in your start menu. If you hard reset, they will be right back where they started.
