(I am not responsible for any damage you might do to your device using this guide)
I tried flashing with the NoID tool several times, yet it always failed, or my Universal would not boot after the flash.
The regular T-Mobile update utility did work like a charm, and never failed on my. Thus I created a little tutorial on how to convert wrong ROMs to ROMs it will accept.
In this Example I will explain how to use an O2 XDA Exec ROM (and a different radio ROM) on a T-Mobile MDA Pro device
It's easiest to start with a clean directory to do all this as else it can get quite messy.
First, get the HTC64 Extended ROM Tool by Bal666 here:
http://buzzdev.net/component/option,com_remository/Itemid,100/func,fileinfo/id,196/
Next get an original ROM for your device, in my case I used the T-Mobile UK ROM as my device was english anyway.
For example, on the T-Mobile MDA Pro UK (or dutch) version, use "UNI_TMUK_11242_126_10002_Ship.exe" (find it yoursef)
Use WinRAR (http://www.rarlabs.com/) to unpack this file to a new directory called "Original", and unpack it again to a directory named "Converted".
The Original directory will be used to check things, and the Converted directory will be used to store all the roms that we have converted
Next we must find the ROMs we want to flash. I got "Xda_Exec_LaunchROM_v113139.exe" and Unpacked it in a directory named "O2", and "UNI_radio_1.08.00.rar" (from buzzdev.net) and unpacked it into "Radio Update".
First we must find out some things about our original ROMs. For each original ROM in the "Original" directory, follow the next steps:
- Open the HTC64 Extended ROM Tool
- Click Decode
- Open the ROM (.nbf file)
- Write down the values after "Operator Name" and "Language"
- Hit Cancel
Now we must modify the ROMs from the other distributions.
From the O2 directory we will use nk.nbf (OS) and ms_.nbf (Extended ROM), and from the Radio Update directory we will use radio_.nbf (Updated Radio ROM).
For each ROM you want to convert, follow the following steps:
- Open HTC64 Extended ROM Tool
- hit Decode
- Open the ROM
- In "Operator Name" and "Language" fill in what you wrote down earlier
- Hit Decode
- (on the begin screen) Hit Encode
- Open the .prj file you just created (same name as ROM, but with extensio .prj)
- Hit Encode
- if asked "Overwrite existing ROM", choose "Yes"
- if asked "Fat16 file is too large", choose "OK"
- When done, copy the over-written .nbf file from the directory you created it in (like O2 or Radio ROM) to the Converted directory. Choose to overwrite the existing file.
When all is done, run the ROMUpgradeUT.exe in the Converted directory, and follow the instructions.
If all goes well, you should have upgraded your ROM without having to CID-Unlock or use NoID tools that were originally made for another device
If before the actual upgrade your PC says it has found an unrecognized USB Device, close the RomUpgradeUT.exe with task manager (ctrl+alt+del), and reset your device (push the stylus in the hole at the backside). Then re-run the ROMUpgradeUT.exe
Credits go to iruja because he helped me find these tool
Let me know if it also worked on your device
EDIT: Stupid me, HTC64 Extended ROM Tool is by bal666
EDIT2: Note on "Unrecognized USB Device"
EDIT3: Added credits
Nice Job! Good, Clear and informative instructions.
he, leuke guide, die ken ik ergens van
Nice people like my way, this is the same way I test different roms for the wizard, without having to cid unlock the phone and loose warranty
Thank you "TheBlasphemer"
wow, I searched this forum for a few hours trying to understand how to install roms from other developers onto my Universal. It was driving me insane cause i kept on recieving country id errors. I found your post and was delighted to find how easy it really is to upgrade roms. Thank you for helping people like me who have no clue. Thanks, Thanks and More thanks. I also give shout outs to all others in this forum who take time to help others. XDA Developers is awesome! I'm surprised that developer sites dont link to xda developers for their customers. It would save them alot of time and money. Peace
Great Instructions
Many thanks for the great instructions.
I tried to flash my T-Mobile MDA Pro to the latest i-Mate rom and it became stuck in the Bootloader mode (I used the No-ID tool, and tried every type of reset). Fortunately this approach works, and I'm now the proud over of an much faster PDA.
Rom: 1.30.68 WWE 02/08/06
Radio: 1.09.00
Protocol: 42.42.P8
ExtRom: 1.30.153 WWE
The original T-Mobile Rom sucks compared to these i-Mate Roms

Excellent
Crystal clear instructions. worked like a charm once I found the Orange operator code is ORANG007. The "Orange" ROM on ftp appears to be a hash of 3 other versions as the operator names are QTEK001 and CDC__ something or other....
Thanks again for the excellent, no hassle upgrade method!
This procedure will be working on MDA Vario (QTek9100) ?
I have a QTEK 9000 that is in Spanish OS. There is no available downloadable shipping ROM so how do i get the values of Operator Name and Language? Are they in the registry=?
Tried this on my MDA pro NL which is stuck in boot screen, but no dice
I used however the init UK rom from T-mobile, not the NL which was my official one. I don't have a NL so I maybe if I use that one, it'll work, but Im afraid not
Viper, I also have a NL version and would like to upgrade my MDA...did you have any luck doing so or did you find the original dutch ROM?
(A stupid question: when I upgrade my rom, i assume that all my data is lost, right?)
Just wondering did you all upgrade your devices with the exe that came with the new ROM, or the one that comes from the phone vendor?
Kinda wondering should I use the one that comes with the QTek ROM, or should I use the one that came with the Dopod ROM (mine's a Dopod)
wow, how easy was that
the orange updater from the net (M5000_email.exe M5000) creates a temp directory called
\Local Settings\Temp\pft3CA.tmp\
run the orange updater program so it extracts the files, DONT CLOSE IT, leave it at the point where you make it update (don't hit next)
now follow the steps of the OP
simply decode your chosen rom, encode them with the correct info, then overwrite the roms in the temp directory with your required ones
then let the orange app install 'em for you!
took me 10 min to make my radio only to 1.09
hi guys
my MDA Pro dead, only show boot mode. i can't turn on my phone. i'm using all rom files. but no result. please help me how repar my phone. i'm use then solution no result. i can't change my phone lang. detect phone show only empty info. help me pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

hi guys
thank you for reply mail. all problem solved. now good working
thanks to Buzz
Thank you verry much i'm verry happy with the Qtek-ROM (radio of Dopod 900) instead of the T-mobile rom
And now I have MSN
Im going to upgrade my MDA PRO tonight using the instrutions in this thread, but which is the best ROM to update it to? i suppose i would like push mail and msn messenger/hotmail.
also is there a slightly more stable internet browser in the ROMS? my current IE is not very good, and opera has the habbit of coming up with a not enough storage memory in dll error!
XDA EXEC is dead
I received my xda exec two days ago. I've tried the ROM upgrade as described. ROMUpgradeUT went OK. When I cold boot my device I get two options - Press 0 to restore factory default Press X to exit. Neither have any effect and the exec seems to be dead. Can someone help out or suggest a fix please?
It's alive !!!
Managed to get the exec in boatloader mode, plugged in usb and reflashed it with an original O2 rom, which, thankfully revived it. I still would like to find out what went wrong with the original ROM upgrade and why it 'killed' the exec. I followed the instructions to the letter. My orignal pre-installed ROM was a 1.13.82 (11/30/05), Radio 1.04.02, XROM 1.13.188. I tried to upgrade to JASJAR ME 1.30.82 171 10900 WWE ship ROM, which effectively turned my exec into (I quote) 'a very expensive paperweight'. I now have got it working with an older O2 original ROM (ROM 1.13.48 (09/19/05), Radio 1.04.02, XROM 1.13.139). When I tried to flash I overwrote the 'original' (ROM 1.13.48 (09/19/05), Radio 1.04.02, XROM 1.13.139) with the modified ROM, RADIO and XROM files from the JASJAR version, I didn't replace any dll files. Could this be the problem or am I way off target? Can anyone spot were I messed up here. Tonight I will try with another JASJAR upgrade, now that I know I can safely reflash with an oringal O2 ROM.
anyone know where i can get ROMUpgradeUT.exe tool from?
i'm just a newbie with HTC. i do know a lot about Symbian phones specially Nokia models. I just purchased a XDA II mini, and i've heard i cut put applications, tools and games with it as well.
i'm already collecting stuff for that. then, i encounter that I could also upgrade, WWE, Radio and Extended ROM.
i have no idea on that, can some1 explain me how this things works... pls. pls. pls... thanx
i have download some ROM, and Radio. i've used it following instructions listed on the site. and have seen my new XDA being updated. but i don't have an extended ROM????? how to install one??? tnx again and more power to all...
The Radio ROM is responsible for your normal GSM function (it doesn't handles WiFi). It is like the firmware of your normal (say) Nokia (non-symbian) phone. I think you need to specifically upgrade the Radio seperately (e.g. not included in ROM package). Some say that upgrading the Radio will improve things such as phone related speed and reception quality.
A ROM usually comes in a package (that is, it includes Ext-ROM). Depending on how you upgrade your ROM, you probably already upgraded your Ext-ROM as well. Probably that's why you didn't see Ext-ROM to be downloaded. However, there are user forged ExtRom that suppose to have all the goodies in it, such that, every time you perform a hard reset, you do not need to seperately install your favourite/essential software.
The Ext-ROM is the area that phone-operators put their customized stuff in. Example, both operators O2 and T-Mobile may have the same ROM for their respective HTC-Magician model, but they surely have different Ext-ROM. This Ext-ROM determines how the phone looks like what the operator wants it to be (e.g. theme and colour of O2, GSM related settings, GPRS settings).
If your phone (or the ROM you upgraded) is from the same operator (e.g. O2, T-mobile) or distribtor (e.g. Qtek, iMate), you may not see much of a difference as both Ext-ROM may actually have the same packaging.
Tell us how you upgrade your unit and we may able to tell you if you already Ext rom upgraded.
WWE is World Wrestling Entertainment which...
Seriously, WWE is a code that shows you which region the particular ROM is for. WWE is for World Wide English (I think) which is generally the default for most phone. However, if you like, you can get other region ROM to installed on your device (make sure they are compatible). You can basically guess that region they are from by guessing these code (you can find - but difficult - them on the web), e.g. Italian ones might be ITY, Spanish on might be SPN, etc.
Big thanx...
thanx thanx for the reply.. for the efort... and much mor for the time...
anywys like your meaning of WWE! hehe.. but i do understand that already as some indications of language/region settings of the ROM package.
i'm having problem with EXT-Rom because, after flashing, when i check Device information, it says about my ROM version, my RADIO version, but my EXT-ROM is blank. i downloaded the package ROM from this site. the 1.12 package for magician, have downloaded also the separate Radio package (1.13), but the ROM package doesn't seem to install the EXT-ROM.
i tried downloading EXT-ROM on separate folder of the FTP, but as i cud see it is not like the ROM files and Radio Files that comes in package. the 2 EXT-ROM i downloaded was a chunk of CAB files and ZIP/RAR files... i was wondering if i should copy all of them to my XDA and manually install..
is there a built in package EXT-ROM??? or is there a program that automatically install them???
again thanxs so much... hopefully when i fully understand the XDA world i could contribute and share my stuff... thanx to the group! =)
Your unit runs on W2003 while mine runs on WM5. So, I can't really give details on your missing ExtRom.
However, yes, ExtRom usually comes with a bunch of CAB files and come XML or config files. What you need to do is, try to search for unlocking Ext rom in this forum or the wiki http://wiki.xda-developers.com/ to check on how to unlock the ext rom.
As for magician, there is a thing called Big Storage, which seems to handle ExtRom differently. I don't have the details, someone with a Magician big storage may able to help you on this. Anyway, check to see if your ROM is a big storage enabled version. If it is, it should be very obvious (stated on the page/rom somewhere) as this big storage thing is a hit in Magician. You may have to treat the one with/without big storage enabled one differently.
Anyway, advise is, look for the unlock ext-rom for Magician. Follow the instructions carefully (though ext rom fiddling is usually non fatal), and see if can have it unlocked. You should then have a seperate 'partition' or folder that you can write on normally. Just copy everything into the 'partition' and you had your very own ext-rom. That's why extrom looks different than the ROM itself.
thanx thanx again..
yup i did download one of the big storage rom in the xda-developers ftp site with ver 1.12
i did flash that to my phone, and always get Ext-Rom error to my device... ROM and Radio is ok, but EXt ROM is a failure.. anyways, following your advice i downloade a separate Ext-ROM files and hit the autoconfig, and from there everything was ok.... =)
you did mention that your device runs WM2005, and mine 2003... is it possible to upgrade that as well??? is there a tool to do that??? and is that different from the ROM files to upgrade the device???
---(having problems) for the last 2 days, i can't access the FTP folder of xda-developers... "page can't be displayed", r we experiencing problem with the site??? can u pls post a link on how to access it directly??? same with wiki.xda-developers...
BIG Thanx! =)
Big storage version may not have ExtRom, probably that's why you are having problems with it. Anyway, the method you've done is just simply installing the Ext Rom stuff into your device. Upon the next hard reset, you have to reinstall the ExtRom stuff again manually (as oppose to if you have Ext Rom, the stuff will be install automatically upon hardreset). But I guess since you don't hardreset it everyday, it is the same.
No. Repeat. NO. you can't upgrade your device to WM5. It has been well proven that Magician cannot be upgrade to WM5. And do not try to install ROM from other devices (e.g. Charmer) which looks very similiar to Magician. They are different in hardware and hence the ROMs are not compatible. And you may kill your device. So, repeat again, do not attempt to upgrade your Magician to WM5. You can always stay here and read new threads. WM5 in Magician is a superb news that if there is a possibility, it will be a hit in this forum.
BTW, on the bright side, you can see that Magician is a better device than Charmer although the latter runs WM5. Magician is superb in almost all the tasks given. Take a look at this thread to see the advantages of Magician vs Charmer. So, able to run W2003 is not such a bad thing at all. Probably WM5 will slow the Magician down.

Well, that's my question. I downloaded (something...) with testdump.exe. It's an about 64Mb long file and would like to make it "usable" in whatever way, mainly because it's from my prophet and its gsm radio firmware seems to be really new (it's 02.37.21).
Regards,
zappacor
Well... I think it may be impossible after all. Most probably the dump doesn't include anything else than just the OS ROM so I'm giving up.
I found (late because I already had another GSM version) that this can be dumped with pdocread. What I couldn't find is info on how to build a whole GSM nb file from the two files one dumps with pdocread.
Hi,
This is my first post here. I have an rx5915 and I've read that HP isn't interested is doing any official WM6 upgrade for the rx5900 series. Is anyone working on an unofficial means for rx5900 series owners to get there?
I really like the PDA and its GPS functionality. I'd like to get the same BT headphone quality that I got with my old h1945 and the Widcomm high quality BT audio stack.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Can new HP Ipaq WM6 ROMs be cooked to work in rx5900 Series?
Newly announced HP Ipaqs use WM6 ROMs. Can these be cooked to work in rx5900 Series?
My rx5915 is a great PDA with only a few shortcomings, the most important of which is the lack of A2DP.
It seems that there are many others who are also interested in a WM6 upgrade for the rx5900 Series.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Anyone has English ROM for HP iPAQ Travel Companion rx59xx rx5900 rx5915 series?
Anyone has English ROM for HP iPAQ Travel Companion rx59xx rx5900 rx5915 series? I have the German ROM and I need the English one. If anyone has this device would you please upload the ROM for me... Thanks.
It seems there are a few people out there interested in a WM 6.1 ROM for HP Ipaq rx5915.
I'd be willing to do a lot of the foot work.
I just need some help getting started:
1. How do I dump the current rom from the device?
2. How would I upload a cooked rom once I've got one?
3. What is the most comparible/compatible device to the rx5915?
4. What is the best base WM 6.1 rom to start cooking from?
5. What is the best kitchen to use?
6. Where would I get the WM 6.1 drivers that would be needed for each of the internal devices: GPS, special launch buttons, navigation button, etc. Do they exists in other roms?
If someone can point me in the right direction I'd love to figure it out.
Add me to the list of people who'd like to see any level of WM6 upgrade happen!
Hi, i also own hp rx5965, please release eng wm6 rom
thx.
I'm willing to help out in the development of this. I just need a little bit of pointing in the right direction to dump my own ROM and then start up with a kitchen to see what we can do!
Please drop me a line. 13 year Systems Admin here, I've worked with a lot of systems and I'm not intimidated by this one, just not sure where to start

I have a rx5965 running wm5, if you can point me in a direction to dump the ROM I will dump it for whoever needs it. Its a english version.
How to put rx59xx into bootloader mode?
This is needed in order to get a dump.
OK, here is something.
Bootloader mode:
Disconnect from USB or shut down Active sync processes
While holding Record button(near reset) and Quick Launch(top) press Reset.
It will reboot and the following will appear STEPLDR:1.00.01 BOOT:1.00.04 MVB.
Next press Rotate button, otherwise it will exit bootloader.
USB disconnect message will appear.
Now shut down Activesync processes if haven't done already and connect USB, USB disconnect message will change to USB.
Next, run mtty11a.
Select USB port, \\.\WCEUSBSH002 in my case
Terminal window opens, but unfortunately no messages or any prompt

How's the cooking going Alpatv?
Any luck yet with the rx5915?

I find some v. interesting:

Pardon me for dredging this thread up from the abyss.
While hp may not have a ROM update for the rx59xx, there are a few updates and such. One in particular, SP34707 contains in it the hpRUU.exe tool. This info seemed relevant so I posted it. And while I do have one of these, second handed to me, I have not those refined skills to assure my victory in getting anywhere with the boot loader, STEPLDR?. I haven't even found much info on google on the matter either.
If someone knows of / wants me to try some thing dangerous but might yeld results / rom dump I'm game.
Does anyone know if there is tear down posted of this thing? If not I may disassemble to see about locating the jtag pins anyway.
I've tried to port NK.exe from a wm6 version that both support 64 and 128 RAM. It works greatly except a piece of incorrect information display.
The memory available is correct in Device and Memory Interface, but only 64M(47.xxM) can be shown via "About". And I can't find a solution for this.
What part (exe or dll) else of SYS part ( or even XIP) should I port from the Higher version? Somebody told me to tried systeminfo.exe, but not within any wm5 or wm6 version I can see a file in this name.
Please help me if anyone know something about this.
Thanks in advance.

Thanks for you help, but it doesn't work for me.
As far as I know, even the xip works, we still need to port SYS part to have correct version, rom space information displayed and i just don't know which file in the SYS decides the "About" information display.
