I expect so, but its good for showing off for the first few weeks!
It really depends on what you do with your phone, but here are my TOP 5 (in no particular order):
* DoggCatcher
* Twidroid
* Fring / Nimbuzz
* Quick Settings
* Timeriffic
If HTC sync doesn't end up handling the calendar and tasks (many of us business users don't want to use google calendar sync and NEED tasks) then G-Sync It or another solution for OTA calendar and task sync with exchange
Quick Settings might be nice (I have it on my HTC-Kaiser-Android), but
From the Market: http://www.cyrket.com/p/android/com.bwx.bequick/

" ... If you updated to Sense UI, expect problems with the brightness! No fix possible, sorry. ..."
So, for me is NO GOOD ... I dont want bug in my new superphone!

How about games, any good ones out there?
Is Quick Settings the widget with the four buttons (Bluetooth, WiFi, GPS and brightness)?
Nope that is an android widget called power control

I'm surprised more people haven't listed their top 5 yet
Just found this great free app called wavesecure - not sure if it has been mentioned here before but until midnight the download is FREE!
https://www.wavesecure.com/
Lets you secure your phone by backing up the data and you can also track it locak it if you lose it.
http://www.droidapps.org/car-locator-find-your-car-with-the-droid/
Car Locator can save and remember where you parked your car and will point you in the right direction if you ever need help finding it. The app uses GPS and compass which must be enabled for tracking down the vehicle and has several view modes like radar, map, and split. To avoid unwanted parking tickets the Android app also comes with a Parking Time alarm

And those articles link on to others - does it ever end?! The second on the list is sub-divided nicely, and the third has user ratings which help.
I sometimes wish it was a lot simpler... Like for the current Windows Phone 7 applist, which is about 10 or so IIRC...
What about a sticky list of the 'Top Ten Essential Apps'? Like the one that properly kills the different battery-sapping services that chug away in the background if you let them.
Haven't got my Desire yet - should be here on Tuesday (apparently next week, but I'm still not holding my breath). Have just had my Vario IV (Raphael) returned from service a whole lot healthier, but I'm looking forward to shifting onto Android - last non-WM phone I had was 5 years ago and I've had to have phones that would sync to Exchange Server since then.
How about: Top 50 Apps For Android
Top ten essential apps from The Register : http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2010/04/09/ten_essential_android_apps/
As the Desire is very new, people are only just discovering what it has, and what it hasn't; what they like, and what they don't.
So, what would you like to see in the next firmware upgrade?
As of 26th April
I just thought I'd do an update on this, and compile a list of everyone's suggestions so far:
* flash 10.1
* divx support and other codecs support
* Wi-Fi 802.11n support enabled
* Proper voice dialling so can use it hands free with bluetooth unit
* 720p recording
* Fix pinkish hue
* Fixing the bug where random facebook contacts will get associated with sms messages sent from your service providers, etc
* Ability to edit the original email when forwarding in gmail.
* Ability to detach files from gmail email.
* Better contacts management
* Startup jingle volume
* HTC News widget fixed
* Better bookmarks widget
* 4x4 Contact widget where not so much space is wasted on the frame
* Android 2.2 if ready
* Support large RAM size
* Install apps to SD (big one, this)
* Support language selection without morelocal2
* Support more languages in HTC IME
* Fix existing bugs, such as facebook contacts; vpn stablity, etc.
* The ability to auto-rotate the screen both ways
* Other language fonts
* Increase the battery life
* Proxy settings for WiFi connections
I hope I haven't left anything out. Keep the suggestions coming!
- fixing the bug where random facebook contacts will get associated with sms messages sent from your service providers, etc.
- an announcement that an update to android 2.2 won't take years
Wi-Fi 802.11n support enabled.
Proper voice dialling so can use it hands free with my bluetooth unit.
I can't believe they left this out!
VERY annoying.
I paid for choice dialer but it doesn't seem to understand me.
I can't see how I use it hands free either as need to touch the phone to activate it each time.
(If I am doing that I might as well use speed dial..)
I hope they add this soon.
Proper flash support want to watch the footy on my phone
if it's the 2.2 update, then flash 10.1 is a must. Also, the purported divx playback, along with 720p recording.
Divx!
I just can't understand why HTC decided to omit Divx when they shipped desire tbh.
Also, Plants VS Zombies But PVZ has nothing to with updates so...
well like most the DIVX is a must.. until then im keeping my Omnia i8910 as my backup media device for my hols.
Bug fixes would be nice eps in the Contacts area & Facebook integration.
but overall, im finally glad i jumped into the Android field.. so much more fun here than over on Symbian^2

Apparently it has the same built-in WLAN chip (Broadcom BCM4329) that the Nexus One has. I'm not entirely sure whether the chip is identical, could be a variation... we could only be certain if someone carried out a teardown of the Desire. If it is contained within the Desire, then hopefully it will be activated in the next 2.2 firmware update.
Contact pictures displayed full screen when calling instead of the totally pants 96 x 96 blurry pics. Not sure if its an HTC or Android thing though.

Holy hell, it's amazing, the array of new features brought to us beats out any other update for any other mobile OS, it's even smoother than before which I thought was impossible, the social integration and office are astounding at the very least. I was in love with the initial release, impressed by nodo, and now I'm head over heels for the RTM of Mango. As far as mobile OSes go it is now the clear winner, all we have to do is catch up in the gaming department and get a half-decent marketing team and we're set.
I feel pretty much the same. After flashing WP7 to my HD2 I immediately fell in love and traded the device for an HD7. But I wouldn't go so far to say WP7 is the winner now. There are still several things Android and iOS do better. But considering the fact that WP7 is about 1 year old I'd say with all its potential it's just a matter of time. But like you already said, without some good marketing, even the smoothest and best featured OS won't make it to the top.
Thought it may be the single biggest update of any mobile os, it only brings wp7 remotely close to what android can do, and about on par with iphone. Maybe that's why?
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA Premium App
It is lacking basic functionality settings needed to make it productive in a work environment versus entertainment and socialization. I don't want to use Crackberry and am able to hack the registry and sideload unsigned apps on NoDo enough to make it do what I need, but Mango has limited that even so I am sticking with NoDo until something comes along that is usable as far as work (this device is my link for work as well as life). MS really needs to look at this more as the iPhone, BB, and even Android offer more customization and functions for work.
I agree, WP7 needs to be much more customizable. If WP7 retains its smoothness and is as customizable as Android I'd be in love. There's a simple way for Microsoft to protect WP7 via some option to enable full hackability for the naive user but at the same time allow those who wish to tweak to have full access to the OS.

Par with the iPhone??? Even that has turn by turn Nav and wifi tethering! I think Microsoft still have a lot to do. The updates so far have been better than all of the competators and the OS is slick but we still lack some very basic features, i mean come on MS surely we could have custom colours and alert tones, tethering etc.
After the awaited Mango update I still have some few questions...
* Why I cannot access music and videos from Skydrive
* Why Skydrive is so difficult to use compared to Dropbox?
* Why I have a 100MB upload limitation with Skydrive?
* Why I cannot upload folders to Skydrive?
* Why I cannot delete several pictures in the same time in Skydrive?
* Why I do not have USB mass storage in WP7 with some reserved space?
* Why I do not have DivX|Avi codec?
* Why MS services are over US-centric?
* Why I cannot have Swype?
* Why I cannot edit my forwarded emails?
* Why the WP7 default keyboard has no directionnal arrows?
* Why I cannot send short videos by MMS?
* Why I cannot send pdf documents?
* Why I do not have a file explorer?
* Why I cannot upload a document to my Dropbox account?
* Why I cannot save camera settings?
* Why Bing Map does not display the names of the main streets around me?
* Why Bing Map takes more than 1 minute to display the map image?
* Why the IE browser does not support Flash?
* Why Voice recognition works only for a very limited number of services?
* Why I cannot save 2 mobile phone numbers for each contact?
* Why the WP7 default keyboard does not support multi-language (at least 2 languages in the same time)?
* Why I do not have separate volume controls?
* Why the hell when I'm in front of my PC I cannot easily use my USB cable to transfer my files (Word documents, OneNote audio files, pdf, documents, others) to my PC. Why the hell am I forced to use the cloud when I am in front of my PC???
* Why am tied to Zune and to my PC to manage my Music library?
* Why I cannot drag and drop my music and videos if I want to. Why shall I need a proprietary software, Zune, to convert and sync my videos?
* Why is WP7 supposed to be an iPhone clone, totally locked down, with no freedom, but without all the apps and all the features the iPhone has?
* Why am I stuck with the WP7 keyboard, the WP7 browser, without any alternative? What a jail WP7 is.

if there is ever a good response, ill enjoy it.... waiting...
Be careful you may be in trouble soon on this forum
I absolutely agree, it would be great to have all those answers.
But apparently not soon. Maybe Windows 8.
I think WindowsPhone 8 may be the right thing. But now MS has still alot of work to do.
I will upgrade to Mango but it looks like it still won't be the best OS...
Bringing the US-centered functionality to the rest of the markets, that's a big task.

Hi Peew971,
I bought WP7 because I used to be a WinMo hardcore fan.
I love the Metro UI and also wanted to give a chance to WP7 and expected that all the essential features I listed above would be implemented quickly.
But it seems Microsoft is not listening.
Mango was supposed to be a BIG update. Actually, one year after launch it is still not possible to send a video by MMS. Still not possible to edit a forwarded email.
I find this unbelievable.
The camera setting is a perfect exemple. 80% of the users complain that the settings cannot be saved.
But instead of accepting this and improve things, MS keep on repeting that this it is by design. Silly attitude.
Also, when I bought WP7, I did not expect that Bing Map would be such a failure.
Turn by Turn implementation is an insult to customers.
I did not expect that I would not have Swype.
I did not expect that I would not have official Google Maps app.
Mainly, I did not expect that most MS services would be reserved to US and UK people only.

this impoves the platform , how ?
the only way a platform can improve is by listening to end users' desires. suggesting they buy a different phone is counterproductive, isn't it ?
to sum his whole post into one question, "why can't android have a smooth, functional UI and a worthwhile ecosystem?"
Thatd be because google can't steal an ecosystem and heaven forbid they actually code their own OS.

that's funny, because the general public seems to strongly disagree... Well, if you wanna buy a couple billion winmo 6.5 handsets to make it look like Microsoft did anything right there and perhaps sway the in that direction do so. I reccomend the HD2, its as close as winmo got to a useful phone.

You can access them fromn Skydrive, just not directly to WP7.
Skydrive isn't difficult.
I don't know really since I didn't invent Skydrive.
Make a folder in Skydrive then upload the files inside the folder from your PC.
I don't know really since I didn't invent Skydrive.
Because WP7 is secure.
Because Zune doesn't natively support them.
Because its where the most consumers are.
I don't think you can tinker with WP7 keyboard.
You already forwarded the email, it means you have sent it, go back to the sent folder and edit it there.
Why would you need directional arrows when you can tap and hold.
No one really sends videos via MMS, but hopefully support comes soon.
You can send PDF files via email.
Because WP7 is secure.
I don't know.
You can, just tap on save settings.
Zoom in.
It's loading the captured image by satellites.
Flash is gonna end soon.
I don't know.
You can actually.
It does actually.
It's hardware related, not software.
Because there are programs in the PC that does the same on WP7, and just hit Save to Skydrive button.
Because Zune uses a specific driver to communicate to WP7 devices.
Because Zune is superior.
WP7 is in between iPhone and Android, its half open, half closed.
Because WP7 keyboard is the best there is, IE9 isn't but it performs well than iOS and Android.

I think these are true, I mainly wonder this must-have-zune thing too. I guess MS thought: Oh well, it works for Apple so we will do it also to sell more of our great mp3 players. They are wrong here, Apple fans are crazy fanatics. When the first iPhone came out, I actually gave a pen as a Christmas present to a friend, so next time I ask him to send me a phone number he has something to write it down with. Even though iPhone was missing these basic functions what a phone should have, people were happy with them.
Cant edit a forwarded email is insane of course.
I still like the OS, its approach and the possibilities. Hands down over android (which i consider to be a spying software by google anyway). I would think a reasonable thing with Android would be to give the phone away for free. You see, they want to know everything about you, ok give a phone for that. Now they take the info AND want money too. Its insane.
I hope the marriage with NOKIA will bring changes to the OS, and bring these basic things to us fast. Nokia has always made phones that actually have all the functions that we are missing from the OS.

I really hope too.
In order to clarify my position, I do like WP7.
I actually just cannot understand the restrictions and limitations
And cannot understand that one year after launch there are still not solved.
And also the fact that MS is apparently unable to listen to its customers and valid complaints.
