Am I mad or is there no way of setting a custom sound for receiving sms or mms? I can only choose from the standard sounds there. I have put a wav file \windows\rings but it only gets picked if you want to change the ringtone for an incoming phone call. What should I do please?
Have you tried storing the sound in the root directory of your storage card? I think that worked for me once, but haven't tried it in a while.
storing it in the windows folder should do the trick.
j.
Thanks
Thank you very much, putting it in the Windows directory really works! Thanks again!

Hi everyone,
Just recently picked up the O2 xda 2s unit, given to me free of charge by o2 for continuing my contratc with them. I must say im pretty impressed by the unit as a whole, yes it has its bugs but tell me which phone hasnt lol. I have SE P900 which likes to keep crashing on me every so often even though it has the latest firmware on it.
But anyways im new here and wanted to say hello and also ask a question that may have been asked before but i couldnt see it anywhere so here i am
Right is there any way i can put a different tone to the one that is already on there for the sms, mms and email alerts???. I couldnt see for the life of me anywhere on the pda where you could change the incoming tone alert unless im blind or something lol. On my P900 you can easily change or put any alert tone for your mms, sms and emails etc but so far havent been able to do that with my XDA2S.
So does anyone have any ideas if this is possible or not???...also not forgetting is there anyway the phone could be louder or vibrate when you have an incoming sms, mms or email as i tend to miss most of them when they do arrive.
Thanks for any advice
Hmmm so no one knows if they can do this or anything???
I have the t-mobile mda III so it might be slightly different with the menus however you might be able to make it work for yours.
As you wil know you are unable to select any other file than those already in the sounds and notifications menu however you can add an extra ring tone but that only works for phone calls.
As a work round when your phone is being connected to your pc you can explorer your device either thru my computer or Active Sync. This will then allow you go to the Windows directory like you would on a normal computer. If you then copy your file that you want as your sms tone to here you will then be able to select it from sound and notifications.
Another good one I found is that by changing the sound files in the windows folder you can also have a very nice sound everytime a menu pops up plus a whole host of different event sounds.
Hope this helps point you in the right direction as it works on the mda III
After I upgraded to WM6, I lost the "default" text message alert tone. I dont know if you guys know which one Im talking about, but I'd really like to get it back!
If anybody still has it, could they email me the file? or tell me where I can download it back.
The alert tones that come with WM6 suck and I don't know where to download text message alert tones..
Thanks!
Hi Chrissystar.
I dont know what "default" alert tone you were using but most of them are stored on " My windows Mobile" in the windows folder.
But you can use any small .wav file as your tone I was using Rom 4. something and could play the catchphrase. But I know have upgraded to 6.1 and cant play it anymore. I keep getting Memory to low to play. so looking for a new one.
If you have any Music on your phone just highlight it with your pen and within the menu that pops up it asks if you want to use the file as your ringtone.
any way if I find some decent text tones I will post a link to you. OK
I Cant find this anywhere and wondered if its possible to change the sound/alert that is heard when an SMS (not MMS) has been sent.
I'm sure I managed it before but nothing appears under 'sounds and notifications' and I cant remember how I did it before if I did at all!
At present i see a pop up box saying 'Message Sent' and hear an alert tone that I'm not keen on, its certainly not what it was before a recent o2 rom upgrade. Currently its the same sound as the sound heard when youre SMS cannot be sent (because of no signal) whereas before these two sounds were most definately different to one another.
Ive taken a look here which is a starting point
http://www.4winmobile.com/forums/htc...eep-popup.html
this information is not quite what i need because....
There is still no differentiation between the alert sound of an SMS that was sent successfully or one that has failed, since the alert sound falls under one category of "Default" notification accross the phone.
It's kind of half of the info I need, if you like.
I have no idea how this was different on my previous 02 ROM but if it helps to explain a little more then the "Default" pop up alerts were "Alarm2" (IE: message not sent & all other notifications/alerts) & the SMS Sent successfully alert/pop up was "Alarm1".
Im guessing this would need an additional registry key adding in the notifications part of HKCU, but I wouldnt know where to start
Terribly sorry think I found my answer here, yet to test

EDIT-----
NO that wasnt right, still searching......................
Did anyone ever find a solution to this?
I'm looking to delete the annoying SMS sent tone but just keep the 'Message sent' speech bubble - is this possible?
"same problem" here ...
edit: done, i've managed to put a mp3 sound ^_^
Please share how you resolved issue?
sorry ... i didn't concentrate when i read the topic .. i didn't know how to change the sms ringtone .. sorry
Resolved
Found out how - you need to edit registry and replace the target .wav file with whatever one you want to use (must be stored as a .wav file in windows directory).
Navigate to HKEY_Current_User > Control Panel > Notifications > Default and then change Wave string to point to your new .wav file.
I recorded a 0.25 second blank .wav file & put it in windows folder so no annoying sound now, just the speech bubble notification & the envelope icon pops up which is fine.
hi all.i have a problem with sms notification.icant figure out how to use some mp3 from my SDcard as a notification for sms.any help
Download an app called GO Sms, you can set any music as your SMS ringtone with that.

Once you set a ringtone, you can just uninstall it.
Hi everyone...
I've tried everything to change the message tone on my phone.
I can change notifications but there doesn't seem to be an option in messages or in sounds to select a SMS tone?
In previous phones there was the option when selecting a tone/mp3 etc... to 'use as' then pick SMS tone.
Does anyone know how to change sms tone...?
Thanks for any help...

You could've ask that question on google and get the answer immediately...
Since Android 8 custom SMS notifications were moved inside the app/app notification settings. Go to Messages>General Settings>Notifications>Other notifications>Advanced and from there select the sound you'd like for your SMS messages.
I think that this way cant change the tone. First go to market find massages and then select uninstall. This will remove only updates, not the whole massage app. Then go to stings-advancend and find the tone you want to use. Finlay update the app
Hi again..
Tried uninstalling the app.
Went to sounds and still no option to change the message tone under advanced...?
This is weird as it's usual in other phones...?
Is there an access option I need to select somewhere...¿
Can't find the actual tones either on the SD card or internal storage....?
Was thinking I could maybe set it from there...?
Thanks

Stop listening to stupid replies and do this: Messages>General Settings>Notifications>Other notifications>Advanced
Following the steps you'll get what you need. In my case I use the iPhone TriTone.mp3 sound. The custom sounds must be placed in internal memory>ringtones.
Hi..
Just found that before I read your post..went in exactly as you said and have changed the tone....?
Cheers...
