Hey everyone.
I recently got a HTC Touch Dual, and I would like to get a bluetooth GPS (I get lost a lot on the road xD).
I was wondering what kind of specs I would need to look for.
- Number of channels
- Baterry Life-Time
- ...?
I can't spend much on this, and I've been looking at these items:
http://cgi.ebay.com/E-New-42-Channe...ameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem#ebayphotohosting
http://www.semsons.com/im5blgpsre32.html
Can anyone help me with some basic guidelines please?
I use a Holux M-1200 and I'm bery happy with it. It's nice and small too.
Honestly what is the point of an external receiver? If your phone does not support GPS independantly then you might as well spend another 40$ and get the entire GPS unit for the car.

maybe its $40 where you live ... but here it'll cost me at least $200!
I just got the freedom keychain gps reciever and l love it. I use Gps quite a bit and the accuracy on this is great. I love the fact that it is so tiny and attaches to my keys so I never even have to remember to bring it. I highly recommend this unit.
Try www.GPSPassion.com for further info. I recommend Qstarz BT-Q818 with 32 hours and auto on/off. It's called "51 channels", not live up to its name since there are only 24 operating sats around the Earth, but the reception quality is definitely one of the best in the market.

I bought this one, only 35 Euro all in, and it works perfect with my Magician, it is even faster than my Mio PNA
I just got a BT-359 off of ebay for $35. Works just fine everywhere except my office building. I do live in Phoenix so I've not tried it in a glass canyon yet tho.
I decided not to get a car gps for a few reasons.
1. i dont need to give anyone reason to bust my window
2. my tytn is much smaller if i want portable gps
3. im not bound to one software
3.5 much more customizable
4. bluetooth works with my laptop
5. $35 is much better than $100+

I use the Tomtom mouse which Tomtom has in the package. Works very good, easy install. It use modern SIRF III chipset.
Adapt mouses are also good. Check GoT forum too if you want for some tips.
Thanks mate!
I saw an Adapt mouse, the ad300 I think.
It was around 80 euro's I think.
I now have a Royaltek BT-1000.
Do you think its worth the money to upgrade to another mouse?

Holux GR-236 GPSlim SIRF-III Bluetooth 8)
Your GPS reciever should have a SIRF III chipset with NMEA output.
I use a Globalsat BT-338, which has allways been amongst the favourites here http://www.pocketgps.co.uk and I'd certainly recommend it.
I can't really comment on the prices of ordering online in Holland, but I know here in the UK it was cheaper for me to order from the US and pay shipping and Tax, then it was to order from inside this country. Ebay is allways a good place to look, but try and buy from a power seller business rather than an individual as you are more likely to get the latest firmware.
Also looking for gps receiver & software for BA
could someone please advise me on a few things.
i am not familiar with how GPS works so one question i have is:
can the receiver be inside a backpack and still get positioning?
sirf and waas i am understanding are a must for accuracy.
anyone have any knowledge of the google software?
basically i want a gps for tracking as i ride my bike or to mark fishing spots (deep sea). i imagine most software would provide this but would like to hear from some experienced GPSers
thanks in advance
Assuming u have the Universal, here's wot I know concerning the GPS:
1). Buy the GPS receiver (recommend SIRF III - look for this when you're buying a Bluetooth GPS unit - it's the "sensing" system). I have the GlobalSat bt-338 - purchased after reading a bunch of reviews. Works great in the country....sucks in NY (too many high buildings and tunnels).
2). Buy the software (heard a lot about TomTom - I'm using iNav cos it's cheaper or buy it as a bundle with the GPS receiver).
3). Yes - you can mark the location with iNav (I'm assuming with TomTom also) but I don't think you can set the longitude and latitude to go to on the iNAV. But once u get there, just note down the longitude and latitude.
4). I use my GPS in my car. I leave near the gear shifter which is pretty far away from the dashboard and it works fine. While on holiday in NY, GPS receiver was in backpack and it worked great also. As for deepsea fishing.....I'm sure you can mark the spot on the software, getting voice directions there - probably not.
5). Personally having GPS on my Universal is the 3rd best thing (next to streaming radio and msn messaging outdoors). It's brought me to a few places without having to print out directions and struggling through the instructions. Sure....once a while the iNav software is not accurate but it'll get you to the place and you just have to hunt for it then.
6). As for googling earth, I believe there are still some issues with google online. Never tried google earth before but I don't think it'll work. Don't know how you can tie the GPS software with google earth.
Hope that helps.
o2 have offered me an upgrade from my IIi to the orbit. As some of you have been using the orbit for a little while is it all it's cracked up to be?
and does tomtom work ok with the orbit and the built in gps reciever?
cheers guys
Go for it you will love it if not sell it many will be after it if you don't like it.
Or you could wait for the zinc (feb 07 or so) if you can do without the gps in-built?
There is an issue with MicroSD's that possibly dosnt effect all units. See other threads.
Apart from that and if you clock it to 250MHz it works extremely well. I loved my BlueAngel but even my old stylus feels fat now. The jog dial / track ball is mega and internal GPS a breeze. The slower CPU also has the benefit of longer battery life.
I am currently looking for one for a friend on eBay and they are going for £300+ so if you dont like it can always sell and keep old phone...
ps. I use a Sandisk UltraII 2gb MicroSD which may speed up map access etc, its generally slightly slower than my 500MHz BlueAngel but no problem.
I'm a new user of the Xda Orbit, my first WM PDA after owning a tapwave zodiac and the first phone I can really type text messages on. For a PDA it's light, snappy (my last wm device was a Compaq Aero 15xx), has an excellent battery life and the GPS works a treat.
The biggest benefit is the size, though, compared to the other similarly featured Xda's in the o2 lineup this one is TINY, it dropped the jaws of my techy colleagues to the floor.
I find TomTom to be pretty fast and accurate getting a fix, route calculations are fast enough, but it is a little slow to start up initially- overclocking helps but not much. I have overclocked to 260 for PocketSNES and on other occasions but find it normally fast enough to be comfortable - quite a feat with a meer 200mhz!
I'd say go for it, I'm posting this message from Mine now! got 3 tabs open text-mode in NetFront- browsing perfection!
I have had the following:
XDA II
XDA IIs
XDA IIi
XDA Exec
And recently upgraded to the Orbit. I must say that it is the closest I have come to being 100% happy with an XDA.
Had no idea how compact this device is. No more holding a brick to your ear, this is an aesthetically pleasing device - even for non PDA'ers.
I haven't found anything that doesn't work yet. I thought the GPS would be just another gimick and there was no way it was going to work properly without an external antenna - WRONG! Stick TomTom 6.02 on it and away you go. Managed nearly seven hours of GPS directed driving before the battery got too low (have now got a car charger).
I have been waiting for a device that combined all the functionality of a good PDA and phone in a phone size package and here it is.............and they throw in a GPS and FM Radio to boot.
and one more thing if you get a decent set of headphones (either buy an adapter or do a bit of DIY soldering) it's a pretty decent MP3 player too. 2GB micro SD from Moby Memory for about £40 and painless synching with Media Player 11 and your away.
The main reason I have a PDA phone is for Terminal Server. I provide software support and it gives me the freedom to get out of the House/Office and still be able to support my Clients. I was always able to justify carrying around a house brick (EXEC) because of this. Now I don't have to this phone is great and I have to say it ..... Gorgeous.
OK now it's out - I love my Orbit!!!
Go get one - I'm pretty sure you'll be happy!
Hope this helped!
Since a couple of weeks ago, I'm also the proud owner of a HTC P3300, after owning a Qtek S100 for a year and a half.
I'm truly very happy with my new P3300.
Almost all of the features have been mentioned in other replies to your post (and I agree with them), so, I want to add that, despite having the same 64Mb of RAM as the S100, it seems to me (I'm no expert) that memory management works better (probably WM5 instead of WM2003 has something to to with it) than it did on the S100.
Also the new 2Mpixel camera works very well, the picture quality is very good. It doesn't have flash or 'macro mode' selector, but I can live without it.
The phone capabilities are good (I had a lot of problems with the S100 not relating phone numbers to names or contact photos).
Apart from a little problem I had with activesync (mentioned in another thread and already solved) it's been working perfectly.
As for the GPS softwares, I use Destinator 6 (instead of TomTom) and Navitel (with custom Madeira map) for navigation and both of them work perfectly.
Bottom line, and yes, I'll be repating myself, I'm very very happy with my P3300.
regards,
thanks for the advice guys! looks like im off to get myself one then!
How about InfraRed capability?
I currently own a Mini S and I'm really keen to upgrade to the Orbit. I've however found that Orbit seems not to have an InfraRed port. So I wouldn't be able to use it as a TV remote control. Can anyone please confirm? Thanks.

I asked HTC about making this device with consumer grade IR and 3G to make this a complete device. This is the response i got from HTC.
"Thank you for getting in contact with HTC regarding your recommendations and support. its more than likely a phone will come out with the functions you have asked. Its a case that at the moment a trade of as to be implemented due to technology reasons due to the GPS functions incorporated in to the phone, which requires other hardware to be dropped from the phone. The GPS being implemented is still fairly new concept and even through I don't have details of future phones its only a matter of time before it happens. Personally i'm waiting for a phone/GPS with slide out keyboard, which again can only be a matter of time.
Thank You for your comments"
All in all adding IR and 3G would make this one compact complete device. Use it to control your gadgets, navigate you around when driving, using it for phone and all manner of PPC functionality with virtually every connection option. One day it will be reality.
Just a snippet from HTC
Hope that helps.
Absolutely YES
Look at my signature, I've worked with nearly all HTCs from an early stage. If you can live without a keyboard, this is THE device to have at the moment.
HTC are nearing perfection!
Best device ever released (excluding the Universal for business use, still unbeatable).
I just got one - having been through the magician (which the wife now loves and uses) and the exec (which I still use as an excellent business tool) I have got to say that I am bowled over by the Orbit/3300 - WM5.0 AKU3, GPS, great screen, brilliant battery life (I get 3 days moderate usage out of mine between charges - 10 calls per day, push email on 18 hours per day, occasional GPS use!
GET ONE - U WILL NOT REGRET IT - and per other posts, if you don't like it I am sure it will get snapped up on EBAY

I tried searching for this, but unfortunately, GPS doesn't meet the requirement in word size and thus it kept returning no results. But list what bluetooth GPS you have and what it cost you. Also give a mini review of whether it was worth it or not. I'm trying to find a good (read: also CHEAP) one for myself. I'd rather have a phone with a built-in GPS but I already have a Tmobile Wing and I'm not willing to part with it, unless I find a GREAT deal on a kaiser or other GPS enabled GSM PPC AND I can get someone to buy my existing Wing. (Which might not be as hard as it sounds where I work.)
Thanks for any input you guys can provide.
BuyGPSNow and Semsons both offer a wide variety of GPS solutions (both hardware & software). As a general rule, pretty much any BT GPS using the Sirf III chipset will more than meet your needs -- this chipset does well with low signal strength (you can even get signal indoors in many cases), and it's easy on the battery. Most BT GPS receivers are made in Taiwan, and assuming the same chipset, are largely identical internally, with the only significant differences being the case & battery.
I haven't got one but the 'Keychain GPS Receiver' seems like a good idea - small and fairly cheap.

Hello everyone, I am thinking of getting a bluetooth gps reciever. I only want it for emergencys when im snowboarding, give me a latitude and longitude so i wouldnt really need any maps. And I woudl just keep the unit in my pocket and off until i had to use it.
Has anyone used any of these devices with the htcs620 if so please let me know wich model, software and your experience.
Thanks.
I currently own the Holux M1200 that I bought online for about 70 dollars. It is very small and durable, about the size of a usb flash drive. It even has a very solid loop that could be used to tie the unit to your jacket or keychain.
The device came with a very small piece of software that gives you your long/lat. It also came with smart2go, though I couldn't get the application to install via the dvd and had to download it from their website.
You can read more about the product here.

Thanks, great info i've found the Holux GPSlim 240 looks like the next version a bit slimmer for $70.00 seems worth it.
Can live search be used with it ?
Can you use bluetooth headset and have the gps connected to the phone at the same time ?
I chose the M1200 b/c it can connect to 32 satellites vs. 20 satellites with the slim 240

I had never used the mini gps program until today and I'd like to add that it does NOT work on smartphones.
Geeks.com have a bunch all about $40-$50. (The one I got was cheaper still but they don't have it any more!) They are all based on a very few chipsets, so don't worry about going with a no name brand. The key is really finding software that does what you want. If you just want to check your position then there's a few packages knocking about that will read the datastream. I don't have it with me but there was one I found that gave you all the details - VITO I think. I wouldn't use Live/G Maps though except if you stop and check. If you have them running continuous you will have an active datastream and bluetooth datastream running at the same time which is a large power drain. That's fine in a car with a charger, but with no access to power.....

Yeah, you'll have to purchase a GPS receiver to make the phone into a "GPS device".
Thanks guys - and in doing that it's probably cheaper to just get a standalone device like a Magellan or something I assume?
Seems to doable...
I know that there are many portable bluetooth GPS modules that work with the Excalibur and 'lots of apps for maps routing too.
I´m just not sure about the "turn by turn" feature, but I guess it might be doable with the right GPS module/Software combo, you´ll just have to poke around... or wait 'till mid october, when I'll be back from Europe and will have mine working with a bluetooth GPS module too...
Anyways, I guess someone in the forum community might have it working...
Cheers.
Well, from what I´ve searched online, the bluetooth module prices start from about US$ 50, so it can be much cheaper than a whole GPS device, being only up to what you´ll settle for in terms of price and features...

I had the Garmin Mobile 10 Bluetooth GPS for my Excalibur. It came with a Bluetooth GPS receiver and tons of maps for download to the device/storage card. The software gives you turn-by-turn directions--which were great. The only problem I had, was the speed of the program. The maps loaded up VERY slow at times and it was due to my use of a 1GB memory card. The lowest amount of memory recommended by Garmin is 1GB, but my mem card was so saturated that the maps loaded very slowly. I'd recommend AT LEAST 2GB of storage before installing the maps for this program.
The home screen plug in isn't WM6.1 Compatible, but I have the app on a speed dial. 2d/3d turn-by-turn, easy pairing, the subscription isn't essential. The maps take about half of the supplied 2GB card, rest is free for whatever else. Lots of refined goodies.

There is a version of TomTom out there that along with FakeCursor does a pretty nice job. I have seen Sirf III BT GPS's for around $60 online too.
Of course the TT isn't legit so don't ask for links.
There was also a v5 of TomTom that would work on WM smartphone, but I think it had some trouble with the landscape screen. Usable, but not as pretty.

In short, I use the B-Speech GPS reciever with the MapQuest Navigator 5.0 and I have absolutly no problems with it. I drive a Tow truck so I need good directions. I had a GPS device (Mio) and even that did not compare to the MapQuest Navigator directions and accuracy.
Its worth looking into

Thanks man - I will look out for it when I go shopping.
A few questions for those that might know for a fact. These may be dumb questions, so I apologize.
1. Do i need to be on a dataplan to have the GPS work.
2. Will any GPS reciever work no matter what country I am in.
3. Is the text-to-speech activated through the software that is on the phone, or the GPS Reciever that I buy?
Thanks everyone!

1. If the maps are already on the phone (or, a card installed in the phone), no. Otherwise some plan is needed. Motonav and Live Search both work with the proxy plan, if you are on Tmo.
2. Pretty much, although the accuracy may vary in a few middle east countries from time to time, based on U.S. relations at the moment. At this point, it is pretty much accurate to about 20 feet anywhere in the world,. In America and Europe, it tends to be far more accurate than the map software!
3. The receiver just determines your current time, latitude, longitude, velocity and altitude, the rest of the work is done by the phone software.
Hey man thanks!
Is there an Reciever that you recommend that stands apart from the rest?
I will probably go and look for one today.
