In my Toshiba E-740 old PDA with PPC windows 2002 there was a bar in the memory tab that gave me the opportunity do dynamically adjust the memory used for programs and storage so i could increase the programs memory allowing the device to run applications smoother by decreasing the Storage memory which wasn't much needed as i had a sd card. Is there any way to have something like that on our wm6.
Thanx
no
due to another memory organization since wm2005
what about this?

change pool size of memory
Related
On Polish PDAClub forum we started disscusion re VM ( Virtual Memory ) for PDA - posssibility to move paging pool form RAM to SD card.
As we can see on this article SD Card can be faster then RAM , so we can create BIG paging pool on SD Card and have moer free RAM and :"maybe " much faster Universal.
@Mamaich - could you can help us with this solution ?
resuming this thread...could it be possible?

Storage cards are two or even three orders of magnitude slower than RAM in cases; this is why they can't be used at all as, for example, dynamic program/system memory.

Your idea would make your device slower than a punch card computer.

Hi, I have a smartphone woth WM6 on it.
Its great but obviouly slow. What can i take off the phone to freeup more of the devices internal memory.
I have a 1gb card installed, is there anyway to set up memory paging onto the card?
Thanks,
Michael.
yes i have this same issue.
it depends on which device you have. depending on the processor you can overclock. You can also change the page pool size which frees up more memory.
You also disable a lot of the junk that the carriers place on them.
Which phone do you have?
Will this work?
nopz there is no way to increase RAM through Memory Card, but it gives me an idea of Virtual Memory.
Any thoughts?
Virtual memory is where I was leaning too. A picture edit program I seen uses this to edit large files. Memory cards are getting faster and faster. Now I'm looking for some virtual mem for my Hermes.
Chris
Gotta remember the flash memory used in memory cards does have a read/write lifetime......virtual memory is used repeatedly many many times and would probably lessen the lifetime of your flash memory.
I dunno what the bandwidth is on hardwired ROM/RAM in the Hermes but id take a guess its alot higher than that used on microSD????
Would be interesting to see if a virtual memory driver would be any good?!
dont believe that a driver would be enough
the core of the os would have to support it
another thing to take into acount is that sd are getting faster
but the sd interface of the pda cant keep up
and writes are much slower then reads with flash
That's true with interface speed. I guess if it were possible we'd have a program that uses the Ext Rom 10mb for Virtual. Would be interesting though.
In Task Manager supplied with Schaps 4.30 ROM, there is a mention of Virtual Memory.... What's that?

That's just the Virtual Ram from the built in RAM. I'm looking for a way to utilize the 10mb Ext Rom or even the Storage card for this. The 10mb Ext Rom would be the best thing if you could use it, since the communication between the chipset and the Ext Rom would be quicker than that of the Storage Card. I'm starting to think it isn't going to happen though.
Chris
Has anyone figured out a way to "move" Storage Memory or ExtendROM memory over to Program Memory allocation?
I am typically left with 13-14mb of free program memory with the device sitting idle with only system resources/background apps running and would like to re-allocate unused storage as volatile ram to allow me to run more foreground apps at one time. As it stands I can only get 2 or 3 before WM starts automatically closing down apps.
I'm sure this is some serious hacking...if at all possible.
TIA
you dont mention what wm version you are using but with wm2003
there is a slider
with wm5 and up memory is not shared anymore and all real memory is used for applications
and storage is always flash
flash like cd-rw discs have a limited writes before it dies
and it read and writes much much much slower then real memory
which is why these devices use pagepool to speedthings
up
so one cant make virtual memory out of the flash
and if one could it would maybe slow the devices down
OS version in my signature but yes will be more clear next time
(Even though I did search before posting and didn't find anything) I now recall a discussion on this stating exactly the same conclusion.
Thanks for the info mate!
I question:
I always have about 70 megs of free storage memory. I don't use it, since I install on the 4gig flash (it's faster I feel, read/write speeds are faster too).
Anyway, is it technically possible to get 50 Mb of storage to be used as program memory.
Like in magician, one could move the slider.
I think that WM 6.1 automatically adjusts the memory, maybe this is why there is no slider. Maybe a registry edit is needed?
No further idea on this?
