Too slow to get GPS signal!! - P3600 ROM Development

When I use navigation software I have to wait about 5 min or more get GPS signal (I tried 2 softwares). I thought that is radio ver problem, then I updated to radio 1.50 but still slow.
Is it normal or something wrong!! I remember when I used Bluetooth GPS takes just a few second to get it.
Thanks

It's common problem with P3600 ...
IMHO BT module is always on and fixed, that's why only few seconds...

Are you moving? i.e. already driving when you load it? it takes a lot longer like that.

Not true!
Using a P3600 and get fixed in less then 5 second for hot and less then 30 seconds for cold.

same for me...it's too slow

I've never got a fix that quick, I get a cold fix of around 5 minutes, hot, maybe a minute at best.
I've come to live with it.

I would really like to know how you can do this?
For hot ok - more or less in 10 sec, but for cold .... hm, can you tell me a secret?

I have an Orange M700 and it takes about 1-2 minutes to obtain the GPS signal but you have to go outside which is normal with all GPS signals. I don't get in my car until I have got the signal.

it might be to do with the number of satellites available to do the initial triangulation...

also, i believe the surroundings and your position are vital..i noticed it took longer in the CBD area with all the tall buildings..more than 5 mins on cold compared to my home which has shorter buildings(2 mins)..and i managed a 10 seconds fixed on a hot start while travelling at 90kmh..
anyway..we can at least comfort ourselves that it it still faster than the 6110 Nav and N95(at least the ones i've tried) =)

I don't know about secrets, but here's the setup:
GPS setup in operating system, set on COM9, baud: 115600.
Using iGo MyWay 2006 Plus with manual gps setting to the same values as in operating system.
Noroc!

I have found that the ROM version makes a lot of difference (not the radio ROM, the OS) to the TTTF. The best ROM (sorry - I can no longer remember which one) took a MAXIMUM of 2 minutes cold fix even when moving and minimum for hot fix of about 5 seconds. Try different ROM versions.
btw I always use tomtom.
However, if your journey is less then 5 minutes do you really need GPS navigation?
Anyway - flash different ROMs and see what you think.

hi
i have no prolem with my p3300 until 4 days ago!!! suddenly my device use 70% of battry in 1 day! i try soft reset, but not solved! also cpu goes to 36santi grad! but no process in task manager.also i try airscanner antivirus! and no virus ...
i use artemis tuch 3
please help me
Hi,
I am having similar problems since I installed Black and Blue 4.3.
Phone appears to discharge twice as fast. However, sometimes a soft reset seems to increase the battery again!!
I am going to try a hard reset to see if that fixes it. I have also ordered a new battery.
Anybody else had this and more importantly did you find a solution.
Regards
same here on orbit.all started 1 week ago.the phone is 8 months old.I can't believe the battery is gone so fast.
same here
same here battery life is crap
even with obly a few calls
whats up? is it the rom?
Okay,
A number of us with the same problem.
Can you all confirm what model you have and what ROM you are running. Also any new apps you have installed at the start of the battery drain. I will kick off
T-Mobile MDA Compact UK model.
Tom Condon's Black and Blue 4.3 ROM.
Only new software is AC S2U2 latest version.
Regards
htc p3300
artemis touch 3.0
no new software
bluetooth and wi-fi is off
no program running in task manager
but when i put my device near headset,i can hear some sound like TEGH TEGH!!!! every 1~3 sec.
i know it will solve by install new rom,but i want to find main problem. today i turn on then turn off my all units(bluetooth,wi-fi,camera ...) i must stay and see what will happend
Yeah thats the reason why i sell my Artemis, battery life is just crap. I call allot for work and use my phone allot, my battery is good for just one day . So byebye artemis and welcome HTC Touch .
I had these problems to..
Who I fixed it: I flashed original t-mobile ROM. Finished the install EXT-rom..
Did a hard reset, 2 soft buttons + reset, then green ring button..
Installed the USPL then HTC WM6 ROM, before ext-rom installation a reset. Then did a radio rom update, to latest version.
I can go up to 3 days without needing to recharge with GPRS @ 30 minutes sync..
Hello, same horrible problem. After 4-5 days the upgrade to B&B 4.1 with flo3the power of battery go down very very fast and a working day is impossible. When i bought the Artemis the first thing thats wondering me was the working life, but now...
I kill all task in background, set to maximum power saving, without effect.
Don't want to think that the best solution is to come back at wm6 standard.
P3300
WM6 5.2.1620
B&B 4.1
Flo3
SDHC support with 4GB card
DualSim 15th generation
I recently read a thread - either here or at ppc-welt.de - where some people found out that the gsm unit consumes a lot more power when you have a cooked ROM. When they put their Artemis next to some speakers the got that strange buzzing noise that you usually get when someone calls or you receive a message.
That sound in the speakers was there a lot more often than usually, when they switched back to the official ROMs the problem disappered. If I can find it again I will post a link. I haven't had any problems with my battery yet using Touch 2.1 WWE, only after a fresh upgrade pdas seem to consume a lot more power for a few days and get back to normal then.

what a pity because installing betterystatus (or configuring it properly if you had it already) would probably solve all that problems.
most (if not ALL) roms come with batterystatus... and sometimes it seems to misconfigure itself and overclock your CPU very much, which ofc leads to fast battery discharge. configure batterystatus to 201mhz and problem solved (or even lower if you dont need uber speed mobile, but loads of battery)
my p3300 battery lasts 2-3 days, doing some calls, using bluetooth for sync, listening to some mp3 while in the underground and using tomtom to find a street 15 minutes. nearly 4 days if totally on standby
Hi,
I have reinstalled my phone using the T-Mobile ROM.
I will let you know if that sorts the battery problems.
Regards
I had this problem after installing the htc official rom. I installed back the touch rom from the forum and everything is ok now. Tha battery last me again 4 days with mixed regular use.
Hi,
Tried the T-Mobile ROM and whilst under general use the battery drain is slightly reduced as soon as I ran Tom Tom it dropped by about 30% in 20 minutes. When I first got the device I could run Tom Tom for about 4hours before the battery died.
I have ordered a new battery so will see how that goes.
It is a bit frustrating not being able to pinpoint the problem.

my mobile service provider found problem with their GPRS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i just install this software and disable GPRS
just 23% battery used in 20hour!
but i dont have any program that automaticly connect to internet! and also always i keep my quickGPS up to date by active sync ....
please test this and DISABLE your GPRS and see what happend!! is it our problem or another ... ?
Hi,
Disabling your GPRS may fix the problem but it should not affect the battery this way.
I have just put in a new battery and it is charging just now.
Will update how the battery drain is with the new battery.

my p3600 view more satellites but fix slower than p3300

when i turn on gps on my trinity, it found 7-8 satellites immediately but it can't lock any satellites and fix position very slow.
what I have done to solve this problem????
it's normal for trinity. : (
anyway, you can try: set baud rate of COM upto 38,400 or higher.
mine, too.
i guess it's normal on trinity.
and perhaps it also depends on Radio version.
I feel that 1.50.08.11 is slower than 1.38.00.11.
same problem ...
Feature
It's not a problem, it's a feature .... lol
remember who said that ?
It's the same case here, by default fix with Trinity is much slower due to gps hardware.
No fix.
Or .... buy a Polaris with its ten time quicker fix lol

Slow GPS Fix Workaround (Maybe)

Hi,
I dont know if this is pure fluke and this just works on my setup but i seem to have found a way to get a 5-6 second fix GPS, having said that i cannot guarentee that it will work for everyone, but you are all welcome to give it a go!
Firstly i will list my setup:
SwiftBL WWE v6.5 16Mb PP
Radio v1.00.25.07
TomTom Navigator 7.450.9028 for HTC Diamond
Process Used:
1: Load TomTom 7, and wait until you get the message "Waiting for valid GPS Signal" at the bottom left
2: Once the message appears select "Browse Map" -> "Find" and go to the page with "My Location" this will be greyed out.
3: Exit TomTom 7
4: Restart TomTom 7, once you see the message "Waiting for valid GPS Signal" it should fix
As i said previously, i dont know if this is a fluke, but i have had 100% success with this.
My Testing:
Everytime i have done this i have done this from different locations 30 - 40 minutes appart (I travel alot on the train) so my device has not been locking onto the same satelites
To ensure fairness in these tests i have powered down my device totally, started the device from cold, entered my PIN and loaded the desktop. Then launched TomTom 7
I have tryed 5 different locations in the UK over 2 Days:
Southport, Manchester, Bolton, Churchtown and Preston
I've never had a problem getting a fix with any of the diamond roms - often as quick as 5 or 6 seconds depending on where I am.
The issue that I think most people are having is the lag in providing an accurate fix.

Im jealous!
Until i started doing this i was getting 1-2 minute lock on and fix my position, but as i said this seems to speed it up alot for me.
Also, there is no lag to get an accurate fix doing the process i suggest, once there is a gps signal detected, my location is zeroed instantaniously!!
My experience is as follow (I tested a lot):
With radio 1.00.25.05 cold fix takes about 5 minutes. After that a few minutes. Once I get a fix, it's stable.
With radio 1.00.25.07 cold fix less then a minute. After that about 5 seconds. It's also stable once I get a fix.
Quality of calls is the same, so is the signal strength and battery life.
So I would recommend radio 07 for those who use navigation.
It is weird indeed. I have 05. Sometimes I get a fix in 5 secs, sometimes it takes forever.
I also found that once I get a fix the accuracy fluctuates from poor to high indeed.
Once I hit the roads, np but need to do more tests

I think it maybe to do with the ROM, mainly because I have not had an issue with other roms...
Hi everyone,
I try Radio .08 and the same thing. I fix GPS in 5-10 secondes...
Some people say that with the .08, less batterie is consumed...
I don't know need to do the test...
I try Radio .08 during 4 days, and my batterie is good !
My phone is charging during 1h30 - 2h and it's full...
less consumption, but when i use GPS.... my lifetime is very short....
No lag ! but high consumption.
I can call and use 3G, during 1,5 days !

GPS on the TP2

I am losing my mind with my GPS. I have had my TP2 since last August and I have never been able to find a solution to the horrible GPS quality. I have tried matching up the ports, changing the ports, different software, hard-resets, I have installed the hotfix, I have called HTC, but things are still terrible. The only thing that ever cause an improvement was manually choosing the ports and such, however the improvement was only slight.
I have used GPS on Google Maps on the iPhone under the same provider (Optus in Australia) and the moment I opened the program there was always a GPS lock, not once did I ever have to wait or get it ready, but on my TP2 using Google Maps (or any other application), sometimes I am forced to wait minutes before getting a signal, if at all. I have searched and searched for a resolution but im not finding any. I just don't understand what I paid top dollar for, I chose the TP2 over the Xperia for it's GPS capabilities, but its hardly capable. I feel as if I am out of options, i've had it for too long to get my money back; I would really appreciate your thoughts on this?
I use iGuidance2009 and have no problems, though I do update quickGPS regularly. Google Maps I dont know about as I dont use it.
This has been a problem ever since the Touch Pro. My old Kaiser never had these horrible GPS issues, Touch Pro and Touch Pro 2 do.
What I have found to work well is to toggle the phone in the Comm manager when GPS is not working correctly.
Also, if you can get AGPS to work correctly, that does wonders for GPS lock time speeds! It would take minutes before, but once AGPS is set to work correctly, I can get a lock in 10 seconds! You have to go into the registry and make sure AGPS is set to use the right data connection.
This only improves acquisition times, it does not reduce the lag which was introduced in the original Touch Pro.
Google maps is probably the worst test app for speed. I use TomTom and iGo on Juicy R5 now, default rom before, and both have no lag. Google maps lags as much as 30 seconds, Garmin and also a few free gps apps I tried lagged 10-15 secs. So this is really, really app dependent. Don't know why.
As for lock speed, agps is a must. If QuickGPS/SEASGEE isn't working then you get the same lock speeds that you would get on old, old car gps systems (up to 5 mins to get a lock).

It's just you with such serious problems, maybe your phone has problems..
AGPS is key to getting a fast lock. That's where you should be focused.
Some registry tweaks may improve your fix. It rocks for me and others owners, but not sure for every body.

No, its not. Everyone has position lag. It isn't unbearable, but it is pretty annoying. You take an exit on a highway and it takes about 3 seconds to realize you took it sometimes. What is really weird is it keeps going on one road while the arrow turns in the direction you are headed until it finally places you on the correct road. That part may be due to TomTom though, but I'm not sure.

As per my personal experience, this is due to internal GPS data filtering by WM, so tweaks recalled by woaloo (I mean reducing of WM's GPS-related data buffer sizes) can help here.
Be careful however with it as too low values will drives GPS to become "nervous" - your position will become unstable, starting to jump randomly with a radius of few hundreds meters.
Another reason of the lag is (most likely) related to the navi software one uses. I use iGO8 and there are for sure settings moderating position behavior from pretty quick (but unstable) to rather slow but noticeable more stable. I personally prefer this last one.
To the original poster, have you tried running a program like VisualGPS? If so, how much signal strength is it showing for the satellites? I see as high as 39 when indoors. I get quick and accurate locks and I am very happy with the GPS performance. I have to believe that you have a hardware problem.
As for the thread drift on the few seconds delay, yes, that is there, but not a big issue.
Personal experience with the GPS... initially could never get it to connect, basically because every time i tried i was inside behind venitian blinds..... never use GPS before so my bad.
Walked outside and it was great. About 10 secs or less to lock, the lag is only a couple of seconds, no more than 5 secs. Added the tweeks and it was improved slightly. The accuracy was within 5 meters or less (used the property boundries in google maps to verify).
Moving at high speed it was pretty good too.
Compared to other phones and iPhone borrowed from a mate there is negligable difference in the accuracy and lag.
BRETT
So the GPS performance on the Touch Pro 2 is not that much better than the Touch Pro? The receiver on the Touch Pro is extremely weak.
At my work we have a GPS re-radiator for use with the equipment that we build. Indoors using the re-radiator I can get a lock in seconds with 11 satellites (the signal is abnormally strong). Outdoors, I'm happy if I can get a lock with 7.

I did try something like that, not sure if it was VisualGPS but it showed me the strength of GPS signal and it was quite accurate with how the GPS appeared to be behaving.
I got the phone's motherboard replaced and that fixed the issue. Thank you all for the replies though, it was possibly faulty.
Have the new Energy rom on but used the GPS hotfix. Seems to have increased lock time considerably.
I'll keep an eye on it though in case the lock time increases...
Wonder if we can find an app that would imbed GPS co-ordinates in any pics we take... Got a Samsung S8300t as well & it does this though the GPS navigation software is non-existant....

One of the extra camera modes you can unlock in the TP2 is a geotagging mode that does exactly that. There's a number of ways to enable them...Rhodium Settings Tool has a switch for each of them individually (burst, sport, video share, and geotagging), or you can just run the cab below
....and, for anybody else on this thread who hasn't tried it already, I'd suggest checking out the cab fone_fanatic put together to help with GPS locks on the TP2, details HERE

huge difference between GPS behaviour in different ROMs

I compared quite a few ROMs with the only purpose in mind: see how the GPS works with them. What I found out is that there is a huge difference between them.
I started this, because I had issues with GPS fixing in Oxygen. So I measured the time and looked at the behaviour of Satellites in GPS Status & Toolbox. I always did a full WIPE as well as fastbooted the radio 32.56.00.32U_5.17.05.08, as I found out that it is the only way to remove the position and time data from the previous GPS fixes. I didn't know that the radio can learn things, but it is indeed the case, even a full wipe doesn't trigger the same coldboot process as the radio flashing does.
OK, I start with this, in Oxygen 2.1.3 after the coldboot it needed 17 minutes to have a fix! The biggest problem was the disappearing of the GPS signal (I mean all satellite bars) for a few seconds every 30 second or so. It meant that the all the satellites were staying "yellow" instead of switching to "green" in GPS Status. And even after the fix (17 mins), the accuracy was moving between 24 meters to 48 meters.
It was the same slow and "disappearing every 20-30 seconds for a moment" thing in Leedroid 3.0.6-R2. Not good accuracy either.
I tested Leedroid 2.4.1 Froyo for fun and to my surprise it was much faster. It had a stable signal and better accuracy (something like 16 m).
So far these were the bad ones (oh, one more, I tried RCMix but it froze down my system after waiting for a 15 minutes boot up...) The good experiences I had was with:
CM7 7.0.3 - This was quite quick and surprisingly stable. This was one of the two roms which could get under 10 meter accuracy. The accuracy is constantly under 10 meter, with the best beging 6 meter. Coldstart fix was about 2 minutes, Hotstart (just a reboot) was about 18 secs.
Redux 1.2 - I really don't know whats in this ROM, but it is by far far the most stable ROM for GPS use. It gets a Coldstart fix in 2 minutes, with all the Satellites being "green" instantly. I don't know how it does that, in most of the ROMs they need quite some time to go from yellow to green. Redux, on the other hand goes to green the moment it sees a satellite. The result is that coldstart fix is in 1.5-2 minutes, and hotstart fix (after a reboot) happens in 12 seconds! Whats more, it has the best GPS accuracy I have seen from desire, with the average accuracy being 6 meters, which sometime goes down to 3-4 meter! I didn't even know its possible with an Android phone to have accuracy like this!
But both CM7 and Redux are fast and reliable for GPS tracking. The biggest problem in the other ROMs is that there is something which triggers the loosing of all GPS satellites every 20-30 seconds or so. If you use GPS Status you see that all the satellites disappear for a moment at the same time!
What about Miui or the new Sense roms, like Insertcoin?
And if you try radio 5.11.05.27?
That one solved it for me, I was using a newer radio version and had the same problems in Oxygen...
Did you use the same radio for all tested roms or not? And what version?
I used 5.17.05.08 with all the ROM. I only tried different radios with Oxygen, and 5.11.05.27 was indeed better, but not that much. It got a fix in 8 minutes instead of 17, but the accuracy was still in the 48 meter range.

Why a FULL QUOTE?!?
And why do you ask for the radio version, when it is written in the first post already?
I have also noticed the same...
Since switching from the Froyo ROM that was on the phone when i got it, the GPS signal/inaccuracy has been an issue... but then again i am with telstra...
Maybe the problem is in used radio. Each rom contains RIL files which must correspond to used radio. There is a description here
I use Leedroid 2.4 and radio 32.48.00.32U_5.11.05.14. My coldstart fix is up to 15 secs with and max 2 mins without aGPS. The GPS has stable signal and accuracy 2-3 meters (sometimes 1 meter).

You might be right, but I did not try ROM-radio combinations of just ROM changes. But with Oxygen, where I started, I tried the radios 32.44.00.32U_5.09.05.30_2, 32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27, 32.54.00.32U_5.14.05.17, 32.56.00.32U_5.17.05.08, 32.56.00.32U_5.17.05.23. And while some worked better, they were still not as good as the better ROMs. I mean they still were "yellow" for at least 8 minutes, instead of CM7's or Redux's behaviour of being "green" instantly.
i just tested oxygen with the same radio you mentioned and it fixes fine for me in more or less 2 mins from coldstart. the accuracy is good too (5 meters) i just used gps test plus to check the satellites. also the gps has a stable signal too so i cannot conclude about your findings.
Guys gps problems are radio and region related
your answer to quick gps fix is:
~flash latest radio
~check your gps.conf file
~refresh your agps data frequently

You might be right, but I tested these ROMs after a FULL wipe and without connecting to any wireless network. But maybe they had AGPS data already set inside (but isn't that useless after a couple of days?).
I found this application for editing gps.conf:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=825717
Same with me.
GPS takes about 5-7 minutes to acquire.
Funnily, downloading GPS assist data from the web didn't seem to always help.
Results with both recommended radio and with 32.56.00.32U_5.17.05.23.
FasterFix did not help - same 7 minutes to obtain a fix, considering a fresh agps download and the fact that I used GPS the day before.
Now with my old WM samsung i900, I obtain a fix after a cold start and without agps in just under four minutes.
In any case, depending on internet connection to get a gps fix sucks. When I'm on the road, particularly on a vacation, internet is more often not available.

Same with me.
GPS takes about 5-7 minutes to acquire.
Funnily, downloading GPS assist data from the web didn't seem to always help.

Which ROM?
I get a fix reasonably quickly on Oxygen, but it drops the signal and finds it again every 2 seconds.
