hi, i have a T-mobile MDA Compact III (UK), and i recently took it apart to replace the screen (i broke it). It is all back together now, and working as usual, but i noticed a icon next to GPRS/Signal etc, which after doing some research, is the triangle that shows the phone is roaming for Wifi.... strange. I also noticed this morning that a program i have on my phone called ShoZu (sort of a RSS feed program) was saying it couldn't download the data, as the phone was Roaming, and this could mean there are charges for downloading....
Any idea why its now started Roaming??!! i dont seem to be able to do anything with the roaming... all i did was take the phone apart, change the screen (whole unit) and put it back together!
Cheers,
Ths is a T-Mobile ****-up when the ran an stk update a while back, it affects the Artemis devices and makes them display the roaming icon (GPRS roaming has nothing to do with WiFi) - it is just an icon on my C-III, but on my HTC P3300 fitted with a T-Mobile card it is a real PITA as it keeps popping up a warning about roaming and MMS disabled.
If you want WiFi on the Artemis go and buy the HTC or XDA Orbit the T-Mobile UK version has not got the hardware fitted - Mike

I had a varioII - I have managed to get hold of a new o2 orbit from work. I want to use it with my T-Mobile sim.
I have put all of the gprs settings in, etc and the phone works fine.
It still has all of the o2 branding - i dont mind this but can anyone advise if this will effect the performace of the phone if iam using t-mobile?
no, it will work fine. I'm doing the same. T-mobile sim in O2 unit.
So are you using a web n walk £7.50 or £12.50 plan on it then?
I am thinking of doing the same, but someone said T-Mobile their own browser to surf with.
Do you just put the T-Mobile GPRS settings into Orbit and the sim?
That's what I've done; the settings can be found from the online 'manual' for the MDA Compact III:
http://p44rfs76.mswtrial-wsa.com/manual.asp?manualid=1777
I'm on O2 Orbit with T-Mobile Flext 20 & Web & Walk
All works great, and browsing uses the normal internet explorer
The settings I got from:
http://www.4winmobile.com/q-what-are-the-uk-amp-roi-gprs-settings-for-web-wap-mms-vt1834.html
The only thing I wish the Orbit did was 3G - the browsing on W & W with a 3G enabled phone is much faster.
Had my desire since Thursday April 1st, on T-Mobile, my first android phone so just getting to grips with it...
Today it won't connect to mobile network for data, I can make calls ok, just not browse web or use anything that requires a network connection like google maps or e-mail, there is no G or H or 3G in the menu bar, just a signal strength indicator, Mobile Network is enabled in settings btw, before you ask!
I still have my Touch Diamond 2 and the sim works fine in that for data so not a T-Mobile Issue I don't think, my O2 Sim (from Diamond 2) works fine in TD2 and not in Desire also...
Think it may have had it, was working fine Thursday to Today...
I've tried restoring to factory settings from the Privacy Menu entry and that has made no difference (incidentally, the restore from backup it offered me didn't appear to restore anything, no contacts etc carried over... so won't rely on that again either)
Is this anything typical for Android or have I just got a freak phone
Any help gratefully received or I'll have to get it swapped.
EDIT: Perhaps should point out that my Desire is not T-Mobile Branded/SIM Locked, it's from Carphone Warehouse, so is running unbranded HTC Rom (OTA Firmware update installed on first day within about 2 hours of getting phone)

Same thing happing to me all day, my phones also from CPW I cant get on the web or youtube or Google the Beeb or applications or anything else online All working ok since last week when I got it apart from it been very hit and miss conecting to anything online.
@popkid, T-mobile usually send mobile data & MMS settings by SMS as soon as you insert your SIm into a new phone. If this did not happen visit the T-mobile support site, there is a page where you can provide your mobile number and T-mobile will send you the settings.

My phone was bought from CPW on a T-Mobile contract, the sim I am using is a T-Mobile sim from my HDT HD2 which I had only 2 weeks ago, the sim was working fine in the HD2, the sim I received with the Desire was given to my Mam. I've been on the T-Mobile site and entered my number but when the choose your phones appears the HTC Desire is not there.

Settings were working just fine Thursday to Yesterday... it just stopped working for data overnight, got it to work for about 10 mins earlier after another factory reset, but then the H in menu bar disappeared again, O2 sim doesn't work for data in the Desire either... T-Mobile and O2 sims both work fine in my TD2, definitely seems to be a problem with the Desire itself or the ROM on it at least
On rebooting with new sim the desire asks for network and says it is configuring, but once you get to the social networking bit it says it can't connect to the network and to enable mobile data settings... (which are already enabled) I didn't get a text from T-Mobile when I first had phone btw.

Well it's all of a sudden started working for me, must just be a server problem I think, no doubt it will revert back to being very slow or not conecting again tomorrow
popkid:
I read somewhere, try to turn on then off the flight mode.
That could trigger the phone to activate the mobile network.
Otherwise, I suggest to give HTC a call.
Working... Finally
Tracked down the issue with mine... I think anyway, seems to be randomly deleting the APN info from the Mobile Network Settings, if I notice that I have no network and go to that page it is empty... reselect the network I'm on and it sorts itself out, no idea why they are being erased though!
Definitely not a server issue for me as the SIM works in my other phone when not working in desire...

I had the same problem on O2 this morning - O2 support said there were network troubles and it was resolved by mid morning (around 11am BST I think)
Ahh thought that might be the case tha it was their end, thanks, I'll wait and see if it comes back on.
On a further note, I spent most of Saturday with a friend who has a Desire also, he is on "3", he had "H" connectivity nearly all day whereas mine was mostly "G".

I suspect it's largely dependant on where you are located at the time - I'm in London (live in Bethnal Green and work at Waterloo) and I get "H" very consistently. It's not the fastest network (I get the impression it's a bit overloaded) but I haven't had too many problems with it in London.
I had the same issue and it was most definitely an issue with O2
Yep, same here. Was tearing my hair out but self-resolved by mid-morning. Chuk

When I got my Desire on O2, my SIM card didn't change (had an O2 Ignito before - stripped down HTC Touch Diamond). When I took my Desire to a London O2 salon complaining of connectivity issues like yours, the guy looked at the SIM and said it was pre-stone-age era. After replacing it, H started showing and speed increased about 1000-fold. I recommend you get that checked - it's free.
As for the connectivity, today it's been dead for me all morning, same reason as in the OP.

Here in the netherlands we have those issues to. Mostly related to network operator problems.
Hi
I've got the message "connection failed due to incorrect apn setting" too - O2 in UK. Since about 9.30 this morning and at 12.15 it's still a problem.

Yup its a known problem

Internet access (Pay Monthly)
If you're a Pay Monthly customer (using wap.o2.co.uk) there's a chance your phone won't always connect to the internet. You can still call or text as normal
Picture messaging is also affected so your message might take longer to send and you might need to send it again if you had a failure.
This only impacts new sessions so you'll be ok if already connected
Mine has started working again now.

Had the same problem, not due to network operator...
I'm on vodafone and after getting my phone back from an insurance fix I was having this problem. I waited a couple of days thinking it might have been them but it didn't fix itself.
I went to Settings> Wireless & networks> the 'Mobile network' box was checked but it said 'connection failed...'
So I opened Mobile networks> Access Point Names and here was the problem, it was set up for pay as you go while I'm on contract. I pressed the phone menu button and one of the options is to 'Reset to Default'. Once I selected this it gave me the option to use contract instead of pay as you go and now 3G and HSDPA are back.
I searched around and the web is flooded with the verizon and sprint phone not being able to connect to data. I have a customer who has an unbranded GSM nexus and it wont connect to mobile data. I swaped sim cards with my phone and my phone connected to data with his sim but his phone would not connect to data with my sim. I checked tha APNs and both phones are exactly the same. Both phones are samsung. Mine is an unloccked infuse. We are both useing O2 in germany. What do you guys think.
Set up a new APN with the same settings.
I found on the bottom right had corner a menu button. I am not to familiar with 4.0 yet. i found the reset to default button in there. I het that and let it sit for a few minutes while it did its thing. All is good now. Thank you for the suggestion though.
funny thing is, is that all the settings are exactly the same as before. No idea why it happend but its working now.
Hi,
My girlfriend recently ordered a HTC desire 820, which finally arrived yesterday. I was a little concerned when I noticed all manuals and quick start guide etc was printed in Chinese. Started up the phone - also default language was Chinese.
After setting up and inserting her old Orange SIM card her signal is always showing as with the small "R" for roaming. The Cell towers she connects to reports as EE since EE now owns Orange and t-mobile. but HTC recognises the SIM as Orange.
I've tried manually selecting the network to Orange which removed the roaming for about 30 seconds or less. I gave up and went to bed at this point as it was already time consuming as she did the usual forget every password possible along the way trick! I woke up this morning and asked her to try setting it to 3G only mode, but apparently this didn't help.
I thought perhaps I could flash a new UK CSC to the phone and this would somehow fix the Roaming issue? If this is correct, where can I get the correct CSC for EU/GB? Current firmware version is 1.20.707.2.
Any help is appreciated!
