Screen width Start Screen - About xda-developers.com

Hi,
from my own statistics on my webpage I know that more than 50% of the visitors of my websites have a screen width of 1024 pixels.
It's very annoying to have to scroll to the very right in order to log in
after having landed on www.xda-developers.com.
I think many people w/ "last years" Notebooks would appreciate
a 1024 screen or at least a login-box on the left.
No big deal for the admin. But very convenient for the "1024"-bunch out there.
Thanks for considering ;-)
v

I'm a 1024 guy.. it looks alright to me. The problem you had probably caused by the either (1) the larger than usual font size (2) the long weird title on some of the thread title.
As far as I can see, the xda-dev's site is at variable size. Works well on my 1024 and 2048 PCs..

I was referring to www.xda-developers.com .
(The Forum is fine though.)
Please have a look at the attachments.
The width of the columns of the Googls ads alone are definitely more than 1024.
Try it, and you will find that even with the smallest font size
you have to scroll to the very right to log in.
Regards,
v
PS: Just look at the attached Screenshot - Font size is quite small, don't you think? ;-)

Hmm.. true. that page does give me problem too.

If this is the one I had attached to my prevoius post - yes. ;-)

Oh,
You use the 2nd popular Browser.
I stick w/ the largest crowd - Firefox.
;-)
Regards,
V

Holy Quran WVGA - optimised for WVGA 2 pages on-screen

This Qur'an Viewer was developed for my own use and will be invaluable to anyone who has memorised the Quran and wants to view two-pages at once so that it looks very similar to the mushaf.
Two types of Indo-Pak script are available, as well as two types of Uthmani script.
WVGA (800x480) resolution is an absolute necessity to run this application, any higher or lower resolution will probably not work properly and has not been tested.
You may find the size of the script is a little small, but as a Hafiz I find it invaluable as a quick reference when out and about.
You can click the page to move next/previous. You can also click the upper part of the page to go next/previous juz or surah.
You can choose from three bookmark positions, which will automatically remember your page position on each of the three virtual bookmarks.
Download it here. Unzip and see readme.txt for full installation instructions:
http://www.acclaimit.co.uk/downloads/HolyQuranWVGA_Release_20091001.zip
*** Please completely uninstall the previous Quran13Line application if you installed it before. This new application uses all new script images and a different folder structure. ***
Screenshots attached.
Jazzak Allah Khair
Could you please tell me which screen resolutions are compatible ?
qvga,vga,wqvga,wvga ???
Thank you
I'm sorry, WVGA (800x480) resolution is an absolute necessity to run this application, any higher or lower resolution will not work and has not been tested.
Thank you very much
DOWNLOADED AND INSTALLED
It is wonderful !
But could we get better Pictures ? with better script ?
Jazak-Allah, I'm glad it works. I tried my best to make the pictures look good using the 480 pixels page height so that we can fit two pages on-screen at a time. It's not going to be possible to make it any better unless we have more pixels to play with, or do you have any alternative ideas?
What do you mean by better script? Which part of the script are you having difficulty with exactly?
Thanx for your reply
I meant a different set of pictures, even the 15 line ones
attached are two samples (Zipped with WinZip)
and if you like, I can guide you to the link where you will be able to download the whole set of the first or the second sample.
Thanx again
I see. You forgot the attachments.
Please let me know the link to the whole sets of any other images you know of and I'll see what I can do... 15 or other lined ones, but I will have to rename the application too
I've resized the sample images to 480-pixel height. See attached.
I think the script on these images is much finer than the 13-line ones and is unreadable with two pages on-screen at a time. It would make more sense to show a full page at a time for the 15-line ones, which does not quite fit with the original design goal of this application.
I guess the answer would be to create a new application called "Quran15Line" showing one page at a time, but I am not sure how many people would be interested in this. Poll?
So? have you checked the samples ?
I guess the images without the frames can be visualised better especially when two of them are joined together on a horizontal WVGA screen, right ?
waiting for your reply
Well, as I have mentioned in my previous post, ( sorry just seen ur answer ), the ones without the frame are better.
Regarding your suggestion of the "Single Page", I don't think too many people will be interested in it since the images are originally taken from a software with a single page, full screen style.
These are the links to the 'non frame images' try them and give me your feedback ( Horizontal and Vertical )

Thanx again
Ahh, about your attachment, in fact they both seem readable ! and do not forget that this software is intended for a 'two page style' which means that it is obviously with smaller pages.
I am so interested in the new images !
hope you can make them.
and regarding the software, you can change the options in the TOOLS key, to 13 lines ( your old images ) and 15 lines ( my suggested images ) !
What do you think ???
Jazakhallah Khair Brother Ashiq
Inshallah you will receive Sadqah Jariya every time i use it
this is what i have been looking for for ages
if you do update it can you consider a transalation in english which corresponds to same
13 line quran if possible, maybe i am asking too much
but thanks anyway
Salaams
I was already considering English translation which should correspond with the script. However, it will take a while to do this because there are so many English translations and because we have tell the application which aayaat are on each page so that they can be matched up to the translation. It may take a few weeks, but Insha-Allah I will work on it during any spare time I have.

This application is designed for WVGA to show two pages per screen, so unfortunately I cannot use the pdaquran images. I would urge you to contact pdaquran and ask them to provide you with a Windows Mobile application (they already provide an iPhone one). In any case, couldn't you just download the PDF and view it using Adobe Reader one page at a time?
Dear monzoyt and all - thank you for the various uthmani images you sent - I am currently preparing the Uthmani/Madinah images and will release a new application within a few days InshaAllah.
It takes a while because I have cropped the images to maintain high quality after resizing and need to also match up the bookmarks to the page numbers, and also need to render the page numbers in arabic on the page sides due to the fact that the images do not have enough space to render the page numbers at the top.

VS2008 and QVGA

Hi.
Firstly, if this is in the wrong place then my apologies.
Anyway, I'm trying to develop and few apps for windows mobile at the same time as bringing myself up-to-date with VB.net. I have almost finished my first one but am having problems with getting it to display properly on QVGA screens.
When I run the app on the emulator it displays properly
When I run the app on an HTC Touch HD, it runs ok, if a little small
When I run the app on an HTC Kaiser, it only displays a small portion of the web browser.
The only thing I can think of is the app is designed to run on a WVGA screen and above, only I can't think of a way to change this. Any ideas would be appreciated.
BTW, any apps I do finish will be posted for testing and then released for everyone to enjoy for free
Use the ClientSize property of the form in the OnPaint() event to get the actual size of the client area available. You may have to move stuff around and resize screen objects to get them to fit. The form's OnPaint() event is triggered before those of its child objects so set 'em up how want them here.
ClientSize is a Size object.
In VB use me.ClientSize.Width and me.ClientSize.Height to get those values for the clientarea.
Alternatively me.ClientRectangle returns a Rectangle object with the Top, Left, Bottom and Right values of the area.
Cheers, I'll try that
RE VS 2008 and QVGA
Ok, since my last post I've worked out that it's only the web-browser control on the form that is not scaling properly. Even if I try to restrict the width/height, it crops the page instead of resizing.
Your help is much appreciated.

Can we make it easier please?

Can I make a humble request to reorder the main page on the forum so that it lists the newest devices at the top and the oldest devices at the bottom....
It currently takes ages to scroll to the bottom of the list on a 4.3" touchscreen lol...
It's on the new admin's "TODO List".
I don't know what it will be, people are still banding about ideas, but in time there will be a new index.
Ta,
Dave
So all the rich people with their new expensive devices don't have to scroll, but us poor people with our 2, 3,4,5 year old devices have to scroll all the way to the bottom. Indignities upon indignities
You guys have the bigger faster screens, it's easier for you to scroll.
i suggest it to be indexed in alphabetical order so that there'll be no bias..
Alpha would be cool

Bookmark, maybe? Just sayin.
Alphabetising seems like a decent idea. But, then again, what of phones like, Elf and Vogue, that are essentially the same, except GSM and CDMA. Seems odd to separate the two.
We're working on this right now. You'll be able to not only filter the forum by Operating System and Manufacturer (coming soon), but sort by release date and other parameters (coming a bit later).
just remove G2 from hero and everything will be solved heheh just kidding
why don't you all use find (crtl+f) and start typing desired name/word/whatever...it is the fastest way to do it...imo
Maybe searching on size qvga, vga wvga etc and then alphabetic ....

Those huge signatures ...

To moderators,
Please, please, please ... reduce the size allowed to signatures
Some users have endless signatures, with many graphics, pictures ... it makes threads difficult to read
Ok, I use AdBlock Plus to remove many, but that´s an endless fight

Size of the signature is already greatly restricted by the number of characters in it.
If someone puts care into their signature, the number of characters could be much greater, but take up less screen space. Just changing the color counts as characters.
The total vertical pixels of all images in signatures could could have a limit, which would prevent the signatures that are blatantly too large.
Often times using more characters can actually reduce the total screen space taken up by the signature.
For instance posting a raw URL takes up more screen space than embedding it as something like
using { and } in place of [ and ]
{URL=the raw URL}link{/URL}
By doing this, many links can all appear on one line.
Rather than modifying the site to automatically restrict this, I think enforcement would probably be better done by making a site policy to not have obscenely large signatures.
If someone does, and a complaint is made, the user would be warned and the signature would be editted or removed by a mod with a message to the user.
That would be similar to how an inappropriate post by a user would be handled.
The mods already do an excellent job at handling those issues.

Yeah, our policy is to not restrict the size of signatures, unless one of the mods finds it to be too big. At that point, we'll ask the user to trim it!
Well, I guess, another option would be a user option that allows to display or not members signatures

Yes What a (new) pleasure to read XDA !!!
annoying mod signatures!
Yes, these large signatures, especially by moderators with constant moving colors and images are annoying and distract from the content/purpose of each thread. It is possible to turn off signatures. Go to User CP>Edit Options>Thread display Options and you can turn them off. But in reality, mods should not be allowed to have such large annoying signatures advertising their wares.

What is the different between Everynote, S Note and Lecture Note?

Hello, I often hear that EveryNote is the best note taking app. What is the difference between it and S Note, Lecture Note?
S Note can only sync between Samsung devices, and the old&new versions aren't compatible with one another. Evernote files can be accessed on any device that supports Evernote. Never used Lecture Note, so can't speak for that.
There's a free trial of lecturenotes. It's best to try it and see for yourself since we all have different needs when it comes to software. Then you can compare the three yourself.
Since I find the cross platform treatment of hand written notes lacking in evernote I use lecturenotes and sync exported pdf files via dropsync to dropbox. Evernote is okay in my opinion but not as feature rich when it comes to taking hand written notes.
When it's all said and done, none of the three are perfect and I personally find that I wish for a feature or two from the others.

Initially when I purchased the Note Pro the notes that I'd take in S-Note and sync with Evernote were practically useless to me on my Mac/PC. Has this changed? They'd be saved in a proprietary format or an image file that was too small physically to be useful to read on my high res screens. PDF export was an option but with the limited page size support in S-Note I found myself looking elsewhere in a hurry for a note taking tool that truly mimics a letter sized note pad.
I bought a program a while back that I can comment on. It's called Handrite note Notepad Pro. By NC Corp. Needed it before I owned a device with SNote built in. I used to use my finger..... But now with my pen, I like it even more. But I already bought it so I didn't have to decide if I wanted it over the other OP ideas and other suggestions from muzzy996. It syncs using Dropbox through an additional program that is called Open Sync and that is free. Works well. But the handwriting Pro is cool and features some neat options. Might not be everyone's cup of tea with how it replaces text as you write but most things are adjustable.
Microsoft’s Onenote beta is very good. Handwriting is good, syncs with PC, you can search handwritten notes on computer (but not on tablet).

I wasn't aware of the size issue. I had some old notes that transferred over and indeed they are not full size. I don't know if that's just for the screen, maybe they would print out on normal size paper? Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. ...
No problem. Yeah S-Note simply doesn't work for me in terms of page setup options. It's fine for simple note taking but sometimes I prefer being able to generate a set of notes with a specific page setup in mind such as a letter sized page in a particular orientation with a particular layout of lines/grids as a background.

How is Google Keep compared with Everynote, S Note and Lecture Note?
Rather simplistic compared to the others. I haven't revisited it in months but as far as I know there's no active stylus support in Google keep.

For me Everynote and Google keep are like a collection of sticky notes. Ln and Snote are more like a collection of notebooks with more pages and options to manage large notebooks. Those apps are for completely different use cases with Ln being focused on students and many notebooks.

Indeed.
Lecturenotes has quite a bit of features though it doesn't always do a good job of providing them in a user friendly way. As an example, pen colors and line thicknesses can be shown in a toolbox on screen but for everything else one must drill down through menus. It would be nice if toolboxes were available for other functions as well in that software.
Its definitely more powerful than the others though even if there are limitations in some respects. An example of the power of lecturenotes is the ability to work on multiple layers (i think the limit is 3) which can be helpful when one is working with graphical elements vs writing/text. An example of limitations in Lecturenote is whereas in SNote when an image is pasted into a note it always remains as an editable image (you can click on it to move it and resize it), in lecturenotes that isn't necessarily the case. In lecturenotes if you want to change the size or location of a pasted image on your page you must select the image using the marquee tool and then expanding the image at that point comes with loss in clarity as it is scaled up. Overall the power of lecturenotes is great though.

What is the page size issue in S-Note?
If you import s-note files into evernote they are physically smaller.. in other words you can't use the s-pen to edit in evernote because the size of the note is too small and does not take up the entire screen like in s-note.
It goes beyond that for me. If all one ever wants is to work within the confines of the Samsung Galaxy Note ecosystem everything is good when it comes to S-note. However, if the need is to take notes on predefined page sizes for printing there is no way to do so. All one has in terms of page types is landscape or portrait orientation with a variety of backgrounds and form types, there is no way to control paper size. These do not print well at US Letter or other page types. I bought this larger note because it's screen is closer in size to a real letter page and yet the applications baked in don't support that.
The is why I use lecturenotes. I have complete freedom to do custom sizes for printing.

Do you mean electronically speaking, the notes are fine. However, they do not print well on papers? How about saving/printing them in pdf format and then send the file to the printer? I use A4 size notes as notes for my work. I am considering to write notes electronically on the Note PRO 12.2. Of course, I do hope to be able to print it out like a A4 size note. Is this possible? If not, from your post, it seems that lecturenotes can do it.

On a standard yellow notepad in US Letter size there are 28 lines available to write on. In S-Note if one creates a notebook using the standard lined page in portrait orientation there are only 18 lines available. To fix this one has to avoid using lines completely by using a blank portrait template. Then what you do is go into the notebook, click the gear icon and change the background, click the upper left box for blank white page, then hit pattern, then pick the second from the right box on the top row.
Once this is all done you have a page that approximates a standard yellow pad.
EXCEPT if you print this thing, it doesn't fill the entire width of an A4 or Letter sheet. When printed to fit on letter, you lose 1.7 inches of width of the page. When printed to fit on A4 you lose 1 inch of width. Doesn't sound like much but on average you're losing 20% of available space on a page.
Its all a bit convoluted and honestly I rather not deal with the BS of it all and I opt to go to LectureNotes instead. With it, I'm able to set up all aspects of a notebook at the time of its creation. Additionally I can place items on different layers to move things around if I wish. The only thing I missin Lecturenotes is how S-Note handles images that are pasted in. In S-Note these pasted images remain as editable objects allowing you to move them and scale them about as you please. In LectureNotes you need to be careful of where you place images because they no longer are treated like smart objects.
Thanks. By losing certain inches of width of the page during printing, do you mean those parts are being cut off? Isn't is possible to scale down the entire page to make printing of everything possible?
If I just draw images, than there should not be a problem in LectureNotes? So, there is no perfect app. I don't want to choose an app, make a lot of things using it. Then, later find that there are some limitations and switch to another app while losing the stuffs I create using the first chosen app.
There DEFINITELY is no perfect app.
See the attachment below. Notice the white vertical strip. That white strip you'll never be able to write in . . . the darkened corners of the notepad image is the absolute corners on the tablet itself when you zoom/pan around in the notepad.
Edit: To clarify, the image attached is what a printed page would look like on US Letter when a page layout of portrait is selected in S-note and the user fills the entire page with notes (simulated by me drawing at the extreme corners). The print is maximized to the long side of the page.
