XDA2s, Holux GR-230 & Tomtom Nav 3

Hi All,
I am not having any lock setting up XDA IIs, Holux GR-230 GPS and Tomtom 3.07 navigator. If someone has managed to get these 3 talking, then i will be grateful if the settings could be shared with me.

Have you checked which COM port the GR-230 is using and matched it with the tomtom software?

For what its worth - My Tomtom GPS receiver uses Bluetooth Serial port on COM6: but I know this can be changed to Bluetooth COM5, serial on COM1 and also COM9

XDA2s + Tomtom3 + Holux 230
I have this exact combination working.
Use COM5 BT
Set the type to SIRF 9600 (38400 proved unreliable)
then tick the box on the left.
If you go back to the 1st tab, you should see it's communicating.

GPS viewer hasn't been able to identifier the port to be used. I have tried the combination given by Hal and that wasn't successful either. I'm now going through all the possible tomtom GPS cobinations and will update you as soon as my luck shines.

When you pair the gps with your pda do you get the message that a serial port profile is available for the device?? Mine does this and it sets itself up as com 5. I am not sure if beams affects this, I always switch off beams under settings/conncetions/beams, if a wired gps is used this is essential as the beams takes com 1 and wont allow a wired gps to work if enabled.

No. i don't get that message on the XDA2s although I remeber that on the XDA2.
I have downloaded Holux GPS viewer on my PDA but when i scan, it doesn't find any com port
I have deleted the Holux GPS (GR-230) and paired again, went to the Bluetooth screen which shows HOLUX GR-230: SPP slave and it connects and shows the duration clock.
I am and have been changing the options on the TomTom GPS screen, alwyas tick the big box but when i go to the status screen don't see any firing between the attenna and the PDA icons.

On the XDA, go into bluetooth settings and make sure that under the services tabe, the "Serial Port" is enabled. Unless this is enabled, you won't have COM5 & COM6 on your XDA
Also, once you pair with the device, try exploring it & seeing what services it can provide

Weasel, I have done what you have said below and yes, COM5 & COM6 are among the list when i check the TomTom GPS screen 2nd box.
I have been using different options from the 1st box, ex. TomTom Wireless GPS, TomTom Navigator GPS etc etc, combining with COM5 & COM6 etc etc from the 2nd box but still the status screen doesn't show any communication between the antenna & the PDA.
With regards to the Holux GR-230, should i do anything different apart from turning it on whiles i'm trying to do the setup?

wm 5.0 totom & 5.100 & Altina GPS

with tomtom 3.0 it was simple to connect with tomtom 4.0 it was again simple then came tomtom 5.0
had to select wired gps and then chose com port 6 with tomtom 5.0 with wm 2003se. with wm5.0 its all different cant get it to synch with my gps any help will be great. im sure there will be a lot of people strugglign with this

Same problem here but using a Pharos 360 with the Bluetooth docking station. With WM2003SE Tom Tom shows a lot more com ports. It used to have Com5 and Com6 and the bottom of the configuration screen. Now it only has Com1 Wired connection, Com2 and COm9.
When pairing the GPS to an outbound serial port you can not use com9, Com2 or Com1. If you pair the GPS to new port like com6, Tom Tom still does not offer com6 as an option.
So I figured you had to use the GPS control panel item to map another Com port to the actual GPS com port. But still no joy. After creating a new software com port it still does not show up in Tom Tom. If you use one Com2 or Com9 that Tom Tom does have options for, it does not connect.
Anyone got this working??

solution found for the above
go to bluetooth and pair the gps with the phone. enter passcode if required then click on new outgoing port and then select com port 6.
open tomtom then select configure gps then select other buetooth gps. you should now see com port 6. select this and everything should work now.

That does not work for me. Once I pair my GPS and assign it a com port, the com port will NOT show up in the Tom Tom GPS configuration screen.

need to ensure you enable the serial connection when it asks you. for me it worked on com 6 and should be same for you no matter wat bluetooth gps you are using as it says this on tomtom website. instead of using wired gps like in 2003se we need to use bluetooth gps option and it should work. seems to work fine for me. do a breakdown of what you are doing cos we may find something i am doing that you are missing out or something you are doing which is wrong.
by the way i have beams turned off and i have not fiddled with com ports on the gps setting icon in settings menu. the application and hardware port have been set to none. we just need to apply the gps port to com 6 upon creation of partnership

This is what I am doing.
Settings->Connections->BlueTooth
On Mode tab. Turn On Bluethooth
Click Device Tab
Click new partnership
Pharos iGPS-BT shows up. I select and say next
I check the serial Port service and click save
I click on Com Ports tab
I click on new Outgoing Port
I select My GPS and select Com6
I have tried with the "Secure connection" on and off
Click Finish
Now the comm port tab shows
Pharos iGPS-BT (COM6)
New Outgoing Port
New Incoming Port
Click Ok to close the BlueTooth manager
Click X to close the settings window
Run Tom Tom
Click on the GPS Bars to get to the status summary
Click on the bars again to get to GPS Status
Click COnfigure
Select Other Bluetooth GPS
Press Continue on next screen
Now all the shows up is
BT UART
COM2:
Serial Cable on COM1:
COM9:
Ir on COM3:
So I can not select Com6 as it is not in the list.

switch off 'Receive all incoming beams' in Settings, Connections, Beam.
in Settings, Connections, Bluetooth, Services select Serial Port - in mine 3 are ticked:
Enable service
Authentication(Passkey) required
Encryption required.
click Advanced, Inbound COM Port is 5, Outbound COM Port is 6.
switch on your bluetooth GPS receiver.
open Bluetooth Manager and double tap your GPS receiver, if it's not in Bluetooth Manager then pair the device and create a serial connection by clicking New, Explore a Bluetooth device, select your device to make a serial connection shortcut.
start TomTom, go to 'Change preferences', Show GPS status, Configure, select 'Other Bluetooth GPS' and select Serial port 6....click done....in the GPS Status window you may see that it is connected....if not do the next step.
click done, exit application.
soft reset device.
switch your bluetooth gps receiver off then on.
start TomTom, leave it for 30 seconds....it should connect to your GPS device...if you have the older TomTom GPS receiver you'll be able to tell that it's made a connection by the constant blue light being displayed on the gps receiver.
if you have no luck with selecting 'Other Bluetooth GPS' try selecting 'Other Cable NMEA GPS', choose GPS baud rate 4800 and then 'Bluetooth Serial Port 6' in the TomTom configuration screen.
i know it's a bluetooth device but this has been a problem prior to version 5.10 of the tomtom software and people have had success using this option and connecting.
i've had success with a few different configurations and have helped a few people get theirs working.....also there is a claire on this board who i went through a painstakingly long back an forth post with and i'm still not sure if she got it working....but i've just learned how to get mine working where it turns on the bluetooth automatically and switches it off also...and prior to this post i had it connected using the 'Other Cable NMEA GPS' instead of Other Bluetooth GPS....so good thing i turned it on and messed with my config while trying to explain how to modify yours.

Are you sure you mean softport 7 and set 6 in tomtom?

I am having this problem but the TyTn only lets me use Com 0 so I cant set it to com6.
WHen I am in TomTom it says there is no gps and when trying to configure it doesnt give me the right options.

com ports and Bluetooth GPS settings

can some one here please help me this is driving me mad for days now i have been looking thro the forums at some of the posts how to set up tomtom 5 and how to setup the gps bluetooth receiver i have followed all instructions how to but iam not getting any where tomtom is installed Ok the gps control panel is installed but i cant seem to get any blue tooth com ports to show up in tomtom apart from

com7
serial cable on com1
Ir on com3
if i rember when i had it installed on my xda2i when i went to tomtom and
bluetooth other then com ports i could pick from tow bluetooth coms 5 & 6
this really is getting to me now i do believe it possible to do it there guys selling the info on ebay with pictures of it running on the XDA exec but i just cant seem to do it
please i would be so greatfull for any help i only got the phone last week i like it

I am just guessing but give it a try, as i am using a cradle based GPS device bcs i wanna use the bluetooth headset as well during drive.
1. Try to first pair your Bluetooth GPS device with ur phone.
2. Once pairing is done, start TomTom
3. Goto ""ChangePreference->ShowGPS Status->Configure->Other Bluetooth GPS.
(Com1 is for the wired NMEA GPS device)
Your phone must within the connection of ur Bluetooth GPS device, now try BLUETOOTH SERIAL PORT Com5.

Hi Sidd,
I have tried that. The problem is that the phone won't allow me to connect to any other port than 8, 4 and 0 and in the Tom Tom menu there is no option of chosing those ports.

Make sure ur Beam is OFF
Start->Settings->Connection->Beam
MUST be UN-TICKED.
(By the way I am in London, where r u?)

One more idea :idea:
1. Pair ur GPS
2. Once pairing is done, switch OFF ur phone's bluetooth (bcs ur phone is engaging the com ports), do not switch OFF ur GPS.
3. Now soft reset ur phone, make sure the Bluetooth is still ON
4. Start TomTom, see if there are more ports now. Try 5 or 6

Thanks for another piece of advice but unfortunately that did not help either My Beam is OFF and I've tried the way with soft reset but that did not work either. I am getting desperate here
My device is XDA Exec and I am using (or at least trying to use) a BT GPS receiver with it. After pairing devices everything seems to be all right except the fact that I am not able to assign any other ports than 0, 4 and 8 to be used with GPS receiver. As I mentioned earlier there is no option of choosing any of these ports in TomTom5 software with the only options as follows:
qct data interface
RIL on com6
com7
serial cable on com1
Ir on com3
Maybe you know any ComPort Manager software I could use to assign the Bluetooth connection to a specific port?
As far as my location is concerned I am in Hayes - that's Zone5 near Heathrow airport.

I had exactly the same problem than you guys...
But first of all I couldn't even install tomtom5.
The version 5.0 crashed in every attempt to install and version 5.21, simply crashed when choosing the map.
Well, I'll try to put every step I did to get it working.
First of all, had the BT GPS paired with K-JAM and set new outgoing port COM6 to it. (in my case I only had COM6 or COM7).
1 - With the full copy of 5.0 version on HDD, replaced setup.exe with the one from the 5.21 update (this allowed the setup for 5.0 to run, and is the one that has the gps.cab file);
2 - Updated with version 5.21;
3 - Copied the map to \Storage Card\
4 - In Windows created the file CurrentMap.dat using Notepad containing: & \Storage Card\XXXX-Map\ (where XXXX is the map name. the final \ is mandatory);
5 - Copied the voiceXX.cab to device and run it;
At this point I was having the same problem (both COM6 nor COM7 appears in tomtom)
6 - Downloaded the GPSInfo_WM5.zip attached here and installed it;
7 - Executed this program, configured it to COM6 (port I had configured BT GPS to work with) selected the correct baud rate (very important, it's on the user's manual of the BT GPS) and click Start GPS to check it's response to the program;
8 - Click Close GPS so that the COM port was not in use;
9 - Started tomtom, edit the settings and chose Other Bluetooth GPS.
Now the ports COM6 and COM7 was there!!!!
10 - Chose COM6 and in 10 seconds tomtom was trying to aquire satelites.
I hope this helps you all. I spent weeks trying to make tomtom work and I got it working yesterday.
BTW, excellent forum. If it wasn't this forum (and another one only in portuguese I was still mad with this thing.

Pairing a GPS with XDA Exec to get TomTom working
After several hours trawling forums and trying lots of things here's what worked for me on an XDA Exec running WM5. In fact I was shocked when it worked! In return for this can someone please think up the next thing after Toothache! The WM5 bluetooth connection thing could also do with a re-write - as could the WM5/XDA Exec instructions/FAQs/help, etc... on BT:
If your aim is to get TomTom working AND you're using a non-TomTom BT GPS, try this (the TomTom GPS seems to install itself without much problem):
1. Pair the GPS with your device BEFORE installing TomTom, because the GPS port needs to be already setup on your device for TomTom to recognise when installed.
2. Then install TomTom
3. Launch the BT connection thing in WM5. Make sure the BT is discoverable (first tab). Select 'Security' tab and ensure 'Authentication (Passkey) required is checked.
4. Go to 'Devices' tab and select 'new partnership...' The pairing thing should find your GPS and will then ask for the passkey - select next WITHOUT entering anything even if there's a passkey. If you enter the passkey now you will not get step 5 which is a crucial milestone.
5. The device should now ask if you want to add the GPS to your list, select yes
6. The name of the GPS is shown. Ensure 'serial' port is checked and hit next
7. You will be asked for the passkey again - enter it this time
8. At this point the GPS may look like it's not paired. The lights may flash as if unpaired. You'll also get a question mark icon next to the GPS in your list. Not to worry.
9. Select 'com ports' tab and select 'new outgoing port'. You should see your GPS listed. Select it and hit next. From the list of ports select COM8. Make sure the 'Secure connection' is UNCHECKED - otherwise you'll be pairing everytime you start TomTom! Select Finish. You should see your GPS (COM8) listed in 'COM ports' tab.
10. Turn off 'device is discoverable' (first tab).
11. Now install TomTom. Having installed the GPS as above, TomTom will now know about COM8 i.e. where your GPS is to be found. If you hadn't done that first there would be no COM8 and no GPS connected to it as far as TomTom is concerned.
12. Turn on the GPS
13. Launch TomTom and go to 'preferences/ GPS Settings'. Select 'configure'. Select 'Other bluetooth GPS'
14. You should get a list of ports and with any luck you should see 'COM8' - select it and hit 'done'.
15. I think at this point the GPS page in TomTom came alive, or maybe I had to restart TomTom - can't remember. And it works thus far!

MDA compact bluetooth sat nav problems... HELP

Hi I have a mda compctII, I also have tomtom navigator 5. I am having problems setting up me I-blue gps reciever. I can get everything running and the test program supplied with the gpr reciever connects to the device and shows gps location. But... when I go to run tomtom I cannot get it to recognise the device. It is set up on bluetooth serial port 6 but tomtom does not have this selection availible... and Ideas?

I have no experience pairing a 3rd part BT GPS receiver since I use the original TomTom. I think what you need is to first install BT_COM_PORT.CAB (attached) so that you could select on which COM port to use.
Try upgrading TT to the latest version (5.21) too.

one step closer... in blutooth selection I am given the option for all the com ports... but it will only allow me to select com 6. This option is not shown in tomtom just com:0,2,3 and 9.

Sorry mate, I think I couldn't be of any further help since I have no experience with the I-Blue. If my memory serves me right, I think I saw some posts about the I-Blue in Howard Forum.

BT GPS FGPXBT02 - doesn'y work cap'n

Does anybody know how to get the XDA EXEC to work with BT GPS
FGPXBT02 as I am really struggling to get this device to work. My phone can see the device in bluetooth but when I run TomTom 5 on the phone the program cannot see the GPS device in the "OTHER BLUETOOTH RECEIVERS" section
Any ideas?

The trick is when pairing device with exec first select com4 and repeat for com8. security code 0000. Then in tt5 configure select other bt device and click on com4 and see if bt connects if it does not click on com8. one will work.

Still don't work
I have tried the above and still it won't work I have heard somewhere that i need to adjust something in the registry to allow this particular device to work. The problem is that when i reach the "GPS is connected to" screen within tomtom 5 the ports that i have selected are not listed.
