As of today i'm the proud owner of an Artemis to...
Coming from an MDA 3 this thing is a huge leap forward
The only thing that kinda bugs me is that i havent been able to find any MSN like apps on it.
It seems that Pocket MSN only goes as far as Winmobile 2003, perhaps any of you have a solution here?
Mine has Pocket MSN on it. Original ROM with no mods to it bought from Expansys. Not sure why your's wouldn't. In a pinch, you could use: http://mobile.msn.com to use the web version of it. Gives you everything except MSN Messenger but you can search the forums here for the Live Messenger Beta.

Contacts to Address Book
hey guyz,
has anyone tried that file i post the other day.
i installed it and used it for a good 1hr. the only thing i was not happy with was the first time you use it, it asks do u want to add contacts to device address book. the only options you have is OK for yes and Cancel. Do cancel and you cant login. So its forcing you add the contacts, which i dont really want. I was wondering if anyone knows how to get around this??

ok i thought would be smart and delete the contacts from the device...hmmm not the best idea. Seems that it deleted the contacts within msn messenger as well.
anyone know i dont know how to get them back. without typing each one of my 200 contacts
why do microsoft have to make things so difficult
UPDATE 15/12/06 22:00
hi guys just to update you on this issue with the contacts. got my normal msn contacts back, thank god i do backups.
i have synced my MDA with my Apple mac and its built-in address book. Something i noticed on the MDA contacts was that there was one contact whose number, email/msn, address i had. and in his details it had his msn email under a field called IM (instant messeging). So i went back to my Mac Address book to see if it had similer field... and yep it did. So i spent a good 1hr changing all my 200 contacts email field into IM field...
Re-Synced the MDA and computer.... *wants to rip hair out*.... thats right no luck. Now my mda address book doesnt reconise the IM field from the Mac Address book...so the mda has no EMAILS at all now.
Hi all.
My Orbit has MSN installed, but instead I use the free Agile Messenger. Here's from the developers:
"Agile Messenger is the most feature rich and versatile Instant Messenger for mobile phones on the market today. Agile Messenger is used daily by over 2,000,000 users and has been perfected based on feature requests and feedback from tens of thousands of users. No other mobile Instant Messenger is as mature and reliable as Agile Messenger. "
You can get it here: http://www.getjar.com/products/5317/AgileMessenger
only about 500k file. Oh yeah, did I mention it's free?
Damn, I had to edit this post...this WAS free, I can see now that there's only a free trial. Well as they grow, the greed grows with them I guess... Even when I installed the previous FREE version after starting the program they FORCED me to upgrade, and then the upgraded app informed me that it will expire in 7 days unless...well you know.
ok, so just to do a quick recap.
I installed the above posted file, all went well, my contacts were imported and are now in my device address book and they are still on my msn on my PC.
What should I not do (or do) to not lose all my contacts?
oh and can the good gentleman that helped me before please tell me how to make a back up of my MSN contacts. CHeers

hi will,
congrats installing it.
this is the problem everyone is facing with live messenger. theres a thread about this problem.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=282540
one thing you DEF DONT!!! want to do (speaking from experiance lol) is delete the contacts from your device - Do that and contacts from your contacts PC msn messenger will happly be removed also.
if you want to back-up your PC msn that should be very easy. My experinace is based on msn on Apple Mac. Shouldnt be too different on Windows. YOu simply go to File > Save Contact List ... And choose a location to want.
Hope that helps.

hi rawedge,
the 2 ways i know of syncing is two apps
1) great app called Missing Sync can be found at here and is great syncs iCal, Address, Time, Photos, iTunes, etc see website for more details. Its one of the best app i have used for syncing.
2) the other one is called PocketMac i think this app doesnt have support for WM5 yet but should do soon.
http://www.pocketmac.net/
this is what there website says about WM5
"Windows Mobile 5:
We are currently testing cumulative updates for all of our Windows Mobile products (PocketMac Pro, PocketMac Lite and PocketMac Phone). We expect to have updates out shortly and will email all of our customers the moment they're available."
You can download both apps for a triel period, after which you have to pay for it. Altho i think Missing Sync is worth the money.
As far as i know of iSync doesnt sync with Windows Mobile platform. But i think missing sync uses some of the technology behind iSync for sync information.
Hoep this helps. Anything else just holla
thanks
I've just looked at missing sync however the artemis/02xda orbit isn't listed in their supported phones. has anyone got it to succesfully work? Don't want to fork out ££ if it's not going to work

Hi all,
I want to import a calendar from Outlook to my Trinity on WM6.
May I ask to explain me how to do ?
Just to clarify the reason of my demand, I know that if you synchronise you will have all the datas, but on my company, the USB ports are disabled by the administrator, so I want to export the calendar file and import it to my mobile (by email for example).
Thanks in advance for your help

copy your outlook.pst from the office to a portable device (CD-Rom) if your PC has a burner and than syncronize at home
sorry I think you're stuffed- if you copied a .pst file via CD ROM you'd be able to sync once. Change your calendar at work and you have to repeat- it's unworkable.
I don't think it's possible- I presume if your USB ports are diabled, there is no way you could install any other software, and the chances of having a CD writer are low two.
Can you ask your IT folks to install Active sync and a USB cradle for you?

4 Solutions:
a) Let your company buy Exchange
b) Let your company buy Zimbra Mobile (cheeper)
c) Establish a vpn tunnel to office from home to sync your home outlook
d) Sync your outlook at work with google calendar and the synch your outlook at home with the same google calendar (use google to further information...)

interesting idea about google calendar.. i've been looking for a solution like this so my secretary could update my calendar for me at work, without using exchange since our company doesn't have it. What do you use to sync your google calendar? there seem to be so many different options..

I was using this http://remotecalendars.sourceforge.net/ as it was in italian too... But at that time it was almost the only app, now you can find tons of them... RC is an Outlook plugin, but you can find a standalone Calendar Application...
We have Zimbra now so I don't sync with Outlook any more and calendar editing is done via web by our secretary...

Hi,
I see you have an orange icon, so you call with orange? they have a agenda function on their website, you need to login.
maybe that's a solution.
Google calendar is a very good solution. I'm using it with "oggsync" whitch allows me to synchronise google agenda with my 3G connection and oif course with my mobile outlook.
I'm only still having one issue, Google calendar can send invitations but aparently, you can't receive an invitation from a non goolge calendar, you receive an email and then you have to import that iCal file into google calendar.
It would be better if I could receive my invitation directly into google calendar but it's not possible, I'll look further on that, maybe i'll find something.
Thank you very much for your help !

Outlook invitation can cause strange issues, especially if your contacts are different between devices.
And you can use only Outlook or PIM Backup ver 2.5 to backup appointments with participants on your trinity (other programs or older version of pim backup gives errors during restore)
Glad to help!

Sorry,
I don't know any software able to read a pst, except for some tool to repair a pst under xp/vista...
...But you should be able to read a .cal file and import it into outlook...
To import my calendar from Motorola A1000 I used to prepare a big cal file and import it with Remote Calander. Outlook 2007 (I don't use it) should be able to import cal file directly...

Google Calendar Sync
5 March 2008 Google Calendar Sync allows you to sync events between Google Calendar and Microsoft Outlook Calendar.
http://www.google.com/support/calendar/bin/answer.py?answer=89955
You can now access your Google Calendar account from your mobile phone! Just visit mobile.google.com/calendar/ with your phone's web browser and once you're logged in, you'll see your list of upcoming events with date and time information in an easy-to-browse format.

Yes, that's great and very convenient. WP7 is a huge progress in this respect.
You can also print the office document and send it to yourself via FedEx

yes that is a real big - for wp7
Could be added simple by microsoft , just make another folder called Documents , and let it sync
same as Music, videos , potcasts , pictures .
but we early adopters have to live with it I think .
I think they (Microsoft) will change things like this really quick .

lol , only tweakers like us will jailbreak the phone (even when it isn't needed) , 99% of the users don't do that.

Yeah I think they focused too much on Sharepoint integration.
Which by the way only supports Sharepoint 2010 when most businesses haven't upgraded yet.
I agree there should be document syncing in Zune just like there was in Active Sync.
thing was, i was out for the day working away had no gprs dongle as i left it at home and had a word doc to send. ohh i thought i know ill bluetooth it to my mozart no cant do that, ohh ill use the cable no cant to that. So it turns out office mobile is a waste of time on my mozart.

Also, there are too many services: Sharepoint, Live, Zune, Hotmail, Skydrive, Mesh, etc... It is a REAL MESS.
Office documents shall be easily transferrable via USB cable, from any PC.
ZUNE (or any specific soft) cannot be the answer since not all the PC will have Zune on it.
Hey Guys
a simple tip for sending things to your computer
if you have a PC you can use the "map network drive" to create a drive which will sync with your skydrive.
so i use that to drag and drop files onto skydrive on the PC which i can access easily on my phone.
or you can download windows live mesh!

I'm an Android user so don't know if this applies to Windows Phone, but many people seem suprised when I tell them I xfer docs, music, files, etc quickly & easily with Dropbox. It really doesn't get much easier. Sure, a lot of people already know this, but many seem to overlook it too! But bring a new platform and all, there may not be a Dropbox app.
Also, I use ftp lots too. I have both a server and client app on my phones and they both work great. Again, not sure if this applies either tho, but maybe. I use Swiftp as a server, and andFtp as a client, both of which work great. If by chance they are available on WP. If not, maybe there is something similar.
Anyway, just some ideas. I probably don't know what I'm talking about tho, so ill go back to my own section . Hope ya find what you're looking for. I hate when I need a file and dont have access to it. Luckily there are some great tools available to make sure that rarely happens!
PS: Google Docs seems to be getting more and more serious in the mobile world as well. Today the just added editing capabilities on mobile devices.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
WM 6.X.X has Dropbox or Box.net clients also (Kinoma or ruttensoft Cloufiles).
But the problem is still here and still the same:
If someone has some office docs in his PC and you want to import them you will not ask this person if you can install Dropbox on his pc. And what if he does not have Internet connection?

SharePoint isn't a consumer Service. It's part of what Microsoft used to call BackOffice back in the day, if they still used that term (along with IIS, Exchange, SQL Server, etc. - basically what comes with Microsoft Windows SBS).
Live Mesh is part of SkyDrive, just like Windows Live Photos was killed and integrated into SkyDrive. Office Web Apps are also part of SkyDrive. It's one service. There is just an application you install on you PCs to Sync Files from them onto that specific area of you SkyDrive.
Windows Live Photo Gallery Syncs directly to SkyDrive. Office Web Apps save directly to SkyDrive and if you use Microsoft Office (desktop Applications) with SkyDrive it saves directly to SkyDrive. Hotmail/Calendar/Contacts are all basically one service. To-Do Lists (i.e. Tasks) are integrated into Calendar and supported fully by Windows Live Mail, as is all functionality of those components.
There are basically 3 Services: SkyDrive, Hotmail, Zune - all running off the same Windows Live ID (if you're organized).
There USED to be too many services, because everything was once separate. SkyDrive, Windows Live Photos, Spaces, Office Live Workspaces, Calendar, etc. was all separate. That's what Google is dealing with now, and trying to fix. Remember all the humbug about having different Google Profiles depending on which service it was? Picasa and Google Docs aren't related outside of their brand, things like that. Microsoft has fixed much of that and integrated the products quite well in Wave 4.
The only people who are suffering are those on Windows XP because they cannot install and use the update client applications (Live Essentials 2011).
Zune needs to be its own service. The same way iTunes isn't integrated into MobileMe for Microsoft and I'm sure Google Music will be as decoupled as everything else Google has when they release that (although the media industry seems to be quite apprehensive of Google these days).

Use SkyDrive. Most people won't wait until they get into basically a no-signal area to get their files transferred over.

awesome!! thanks for the tip!
If you use Microsoft Office (2003 and above) to edit a file on SkyDrive it automatically maps it as a "Network Place" on your computer, BTW, after you open the first file.

Thanks for this useful clarification N8ter.
Still I think it's a bit complicated, and services shall be more integrated.
I think they will have issues trying to integrate them "more" than they already have.
Couple Windows Phone 7 with Windows 7 + Live Essentials, and it's hard to get more integrated with such a good workflow [than they already are].
I'm sure there are areas where the integration can be made tighter, though.
Also I made a typo. I said "... iTunes isn't integrated into mobileMe for Microsoft..."
Microsoft should be "Apple."
Adding Word Documents to WP&
I'm confused on how to send word documents to WP7. I added the documents to Skydrive but I don't see them in my phone. Anybody know what is the ebst way to do it? Thank you
I've been using WP7 for about 5-6 days now. It's been an interesting combination of "How can that be missing?" and "Holy crap, that's cool!". By far, I think the most awesome and unique features are the cloud-related ones, like auto upload photos to SkyDrive and Zune.
And then I discovered the uber-coolness of OneNote.
As with many things on WP7, the documentation is scarce, burried, or both. But, did you know that you can have tabbed OneNote Notebook on WP7? Did you know that it can be perfectly synced to the free Web version and to the Office 2010 version of your PC?
Did you know that you can even have multiple notebooks?
If not, here's how:
1. Go to office.live.com on your PC, and make sure that you have a OneNote file created. If you've used OneNote from your PC, there should be a Personal (Web) file. If not, create it.
2. If you have OneNote on your PC, you can open it from office.live.com; just hover over the file, and click Open in OneNote. OneNote will save a book tab on the left side (in rotated print).
3. On your phone, set OneNote sync on (from Settings / Applications / Office / OneNote). Make sure to set Internet to default to mobile version (important!) and navigate to office.live.com in the Browser.
4. Go to the folder you have the OneNote Notebook, and tap it to open it. This automatically adds the Notebook to your OneNote on the phone, and opens it in OneNote. The tabs will all sync.
Presto -- you now have a Cloud based OneNote Notebook synced to your phone! You can see all your tabs, and all your pages; if you make changes, it all gets synced on the cloud automatically, and you can see it all on your Office 2010 version of OneNote, too!
You can even color your tabs. Just set the colors on your PC or Web, and they'll sync on the phone.
Want a second or third notebook? Just create a new one on Office Live, then go there on the phone and add it.
Also: if you tap and hold a notebook section (tab) you have the ability to set that as the default for new pages.
Neat, huh?
Thanks for letting us know, shame I don´t have a WP7
Any pics?
Excellent. I'm a bit of a OneNote junky. I use it for everything. This is great info. Thanks for sharing.
interesting find.
Now we just have to wait for the barrage of people who think the cloud is evil....
Great tip! Just tried it on my HD7 and it works great!
I'm wondering; is there any way to password protect individual pages or tabs? If so, this would be the ideal way to store my passwords and bank details. As of now, there's no eWallet or SPB Wallet for WP7 and I'm missing that functionality :-(
NB I suppose I could set a pin for the phone in general, for basic protection, but still if I give my phone to someone to make a call or whatever they could still open my notes...
The password protection issue is part of my "huh, how did they miss THAT (scratches head)?". It also bugs me that once you put a credit card into Zune marketplace, anyone can make purchases without password approval too -- what's up with that?
Cell phones are normally a "singler user" device unlike computers (although even those are now single-user more often than not). If you want to password protect your notes, just put a pin on your lockscreen that will in effect password protect your whole phone.
thanks for the tip! was wondering how to get one note to sync up! love it
The problem that I have with locking the phone is twofold: first, I don't like how long it takes to go from locked to home screen (too many taps). Second, I generally don't need to lock my phone - the problem is, if I let someone else play with my phone (for example, a kid, in a restaurant to keep them quiet!), I don't want to worry about them buying something on Marketplace
It's not a deal killer for me, and I use my phone totally non-password protected ATM.

You will give some random kid in a restaurant a $500 device to play with and possibly drop or run off with but then you worry about the 5% chance they will accidently purchase a $5 app?

Neat, huh?

there is an easier way to get the books synced to your phone and anyone else who you want to have the same onenote books.
1 go to onenote on you pc.
2 click file new
3 in store notebook on select web
4 enter the name of book
5 web location select skydrive and make sure you are logged in to win live
6 if you want a different folder than the default folder (My Doccuments) click new share folder
7 click create folder
8 it will then ask you if you want to email the link to someone
9 click this selection and email it to your phone or anyone else you want to share this book with even other pcs.
10 on your phone in the email you get select the 1st option ("open this book in onenote)
your done.
Everything about How To Use OneNote and sync is well explained here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsphone/en-us/howto/wp7/office/use-office-onenote-mobile.aspx
This has been known forever. You can even Sync OneNote on Windows Mobile 6.5 to Desktop OneNote. They started advertising this before the OS was released, back when they gave away office mobile 2010 for WM6.5 users to let them know what was coming in their next mobile OS/Office version.
The annoying thing about Onenote on WP7 is that:
1. it doesnt support equations
2. it doesnt display symbols that aren't in the WP7 keyboard but are present on the PC
3. you can't enlarge a diagram in an existing notebook to view it full size
renders it almost useless to me...
or i need to reformat all my lecture notes! :'(
I've set this up, but am having a few problems:
I have four notebooks on my computer, all are set to sync with Sky Drive. I've opened One Note on my device and told it to sync to Sky Drive. It has added a 5th Note (Personal (web)) to my Sky Drive, which has taken the tabs from one of my Note Books and they now sync to the phone. But it is ignoring the other Notebooks completely.
What do I need to do to get all my Notebooks to Sync?

Hey dude, there was another thread which answered this question in more depth
But to summarise it for you:
1. make sure you have your phone browser settings to view mobile version
2. go to office.live.com on your phone
3. click on the icon to open the notebooks you want to snyc
4. repeat with any others you want to sync
5. SORTED!!!
The trick is to go to the mobile version of skydrive..,. why it doesn't work when you use the desktop version, i have no idea but at least it works...
Sweet, worked a charm. Not sure why the auto-setup think made such a hash of it though!
You guys got me curious and now I'm hooked on OneNote! How could I have never used this before! I have Office 2010 Professional and never used it till now. Sweet!

same here. Very nice to bang out a list on the computer, close it, and it will pop up on my phone.
Ok driving me nuts
I have a quick question I was able to successfully sync the one notes with my focus and my work pc, is there a way I can connect my home desktop to these shared notes? I have been trying desperately to get this done, and for the life of me can't get it working. And I though that opening the file in one note on the pc would do it but my browser some reason doesn't support that..?
I have been trying to find out if windows 7 mobile is able to support my excel spreadsheet. Some retailers say yes no problem, others say my formulas are to complex, no one has been able to try it for me. How can I find out if my spreadsheet can be read, edited and it calculates properly before I buy?
Does the handset make any differance or is the win 7 the same on all? I haven't purchased a handset as of yet as I am still trying to find out what apps I can use on them. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I very much want excel and word support, pdf reader is a must - creator would be a real plus. Gps would be real nice too.
Thus far I am leaning towards the htc surround, it seems to be one of the better options in my limited market.
before you buy the device,I have to let you know that, unless you are using microsoft sharepoint,if not the office application is kind of useless.
me as a student,I can't even transfer my lecture note to the device and revise it anywhere.
so,think twice before you buy a device
onenote is the only thing that you can sync to skydrive. so you can edit them on the web as well.
excel and word on the hand has to be emailed back and forth if you don't have sharepoint.
MS did demo a skydrive client at CES, which will be part of mango update, released in fall 2011, so that will be the resolve, but till then email is the only way to do it.
Thanks for the tips, I can see more research is in order.
You don't have to email word and excel documents in order to make them usable on a WP7 device. You can also choose to sync these items with either dropbox - which has several clients for WP7 - or software solutions like homepipe. Both work fine, either way.
But it's truely just a workaround until MS will provide full skydrive support. Which should have been part of WP7 from day one in the first place.
Transfering isn't a big deal, I would like to put the spreadsheet template on the handset, add in the data as needed and have excel do the calculations. Perhaps a quarterly backup to the computer would be fine. Will the handset excel sync with the desktop app, filling in the fields or would that have to be done manually?

I never really tried that, because I hardly use excel. But the way I described works with word, so why should it be any different with excel? Just save the file created on your desktop PC to your dropbox folder (or any other folder you can sync with your handset), then download and open it from the client app on your device.

Well, I just looked into my zune & LG Quantum transfer options, and I could not find any options regarding transferring any type of files that are not music, video or podcasts. EDIT: NM, miss understood your question. I don't believe the spreadsheets will sync. But using dropbox, this wouldn't be an issue, as you would always be opening the dropbox copy of the spreadsheet.
RE: seeing whether or not your excel spreadsheet will run properly, I am not sure how private/personal your spreadsheet is, but you could email it to a user here to test it and report back to you if it works.
Would the dropbox copy be the same as the computer copy? Would someone be willing to try the template for me to see if it will run and calculate properly? That is a great idea! The template is about 1.5 mb. If anyone is willing to try this for me please PM me, thanks.
i use Excel a lot on my windows phone by using a budget spreadsheet I whipped up on my computer. I know there are multitudes of budgets apps but why do that when you can auto calculate averages, sums, and present them graphically with a simple spread sheet?
Now at the moment, the only way to get Office docs (Word or Excel) on the phone is via emailing your self or as others suggested dropbox or file server. The downside is changes made on the phone isn't synced back to the source. You have to email the changes to yourself.
Microsoft has demoed Skydrive integration coming in the Fall update. Changes made then will be automatically synced like One note is now.
As for formulas, my formulas and graphs work and show up on the phone just fine! However I am not sure if more complicated ones work as I was unable to edit an excel timesheet from my job on my phone (says unable to open this file created from earlier office version). I am willing to test this template for you.
Feel free to PM it to me.
Also one way to get office documents on the phone iis utilizing skydrive instead of dropbox
1, I mapped my skydrive "My Documents" folder as a network drive on my Windows 7 PC
2. I save all my office documents there. I can edit them, delete them, rename them just as any other folder.
3. One the phone you can access skydrive via the browser and download your files without needing drop box or 3rd party solutions. The downside is being unable to upload them back!
4. Do maintenance, email your changed document and replace it on the desktop yourself.
Hope this helps.
