Im about to install a "cooked" rom from over on the Herald section. Its not TOTALLY working for my phone, but majority are getting along with it.
What I would like to do is backup my ENTIRE phone to my computer (much like norton Ghost or any other backup software), and save it incase I dont like the new ROM. This way I will have something to revert to if I dont fully like the new one.
Is there a suggestion as to which program you all think I should use? I'd like to have a program where its an easy backup procedure, and also an easy restore procedure if possible. Im running WM6 currently on my Tmobile Wing (HTC Herald)
Thank everyone so much!
Active Sync will back up your contacts, calendar, emails, notes, files and program data.
In addition, you can use PIMBackup for your Call Logs, Messages, Speed Dials, etc. and either Spb Backup or Sprite Backup for a full system backup (i.e. you won't have to reinstall all your apps as long as you restore to the same ROM you backed up from).
spb and sprite sound like what Im looking for. Suggestion to as which one is better?
I think it's more of a personal preference, but for some reason I use Spb Backup. I've been perfectly happy with it.
Make that another vote for SPB, it backs up to MiniSD card, least on my Trinity it does, and following a hard reset, just run the exe on the card to restore exactly as it was when the backup was taken.

I have set up many programs on my wm5 SX66. I would like to back up the whole system, so I don't need reinstall all programs in case wm5 crash. Is there a way to do so?
did I remember seeing a backup app on the Tuma 1.4? I too would like to know of an app similar to xBackup in 2003se that would allow me to backup the ramdisk to SD
back up everything
I use Sprite backup. It can back up everything your phone to your SD or to your PC. There is also an otion to backup or restore a spfeic file or part (i.e. REG only or the My Document folder only or Contacts only and etc...).
There are also other software beside sprite backup but is for to explore.
SBP backup will work for this as well. Can you do scheduled backups with sprite? I would like to schedule for 2x daily but SBP only lets you schedule one.
Hey all
Like everyone else here i love flashing the new cooked roms. LVSW's work a treat.
However it pains me to have to reinstall all my programs.
If i update to say the new LVSW rom can i use SPB backup to backup my current info and then just restore the backup on the new roms. Is there any particular things that should or should be backuped up.
It sounds to simple but would this work or would it just end up causing problems with the new rom.
Is there any other program that might do this.
Cheers.
If you are changing ROMs then the answer is no. Backups only help you if you have to hard-reset to reload a clean version of the same ROM.
tried using sprite and moving between LSVW and Black, seems to be fine, i guess YMMV
Add/Remove Programs
Once all of the slick utilities come together for running customizations after hard reset or flash, the only thing I would think pertinent to restore would be things like call history or text/sms messages.
If you can restore your WiFI, GPRS/3G/MMS settings via a cab, and your apps in one simple run of Activesync or WMDC, why would you want to risk overlaying a program or registry setting?
Bits change between builds. This is no different than loading a service pack or upgrading from XP SP2 to Vista. I wouldn't even consider doing a restore of anything except "My Documents" and some data.
Until backup utilities allow for selective restore, they get loaded on my device as do the rest of my software. After a hard reset and through Add Programs. I then delete my old backups, get the device set up the way I want it, then backup. This way I'm assured that if I have to hard reset once I'm on a particular version, I can restore functionality with a restore.
My .02
Cheers.
I thought it would be a long shot.
Thanks for your help.

I have been using SPB Backup to restore the entire OS, the contacts database are not interchangeable between WM5 & WM6, but I can swap between WM5/WM6 by just restoring a full backup of either. SPB works ok with WM6, with exception to a couple temp files in the system area cannot be locked to be backed up, and the scheduled backup will not fire.
?Glitch
with wm5, i can full restore ~4-5 minutes.
with wm6 it will take ~30 > mins.
I see a few people mention problems with SPB backup.
With duttys new rom due soon, id like to back up before flashing.
I've used SPB and Sprite.
Most people are happy with either. Sprite is my preference for standard Backups and PIMBackup (available on this forum) I use for all my PIM data.
I'm not sure if SPB have developed the functionality to match Sprite's but Sprite allows you to restore Backups without having the app installed (i.e. Backups are saved as .exe's ).
Also Sprite, allows you to upgrade to another Windows version (and preserve your installed apps), though I've not tried this ever.
Hope this helps
ill give them a go, thanks
i'd recommend PIM back-up

Hello
I would like to upgrade my blackstone ROM to the newer one from the HTC support site (is it good thing to do?).
But I don't want to loose any of my data - I don't have lots of them but i don't want to loose them (this counts SMSs, MOSTLY apps, settings and pics).
My questions is:
What is the best software to backup stuff?
I found that SPB Backup is very good.
But another question - how is this done? Do I install this app, backup the data I want (I read that I can select what i want to backup) and then upgrade the ROM, then install spb backup again on device and restore?
Can anyone please give me a little advice here who has some experience with backuping and restoring?
Thank you people.
Better way is to move all your files onto a seperate storage card or your computer, Download ppcPIM backup http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=299705 Then backup with that.
After installing new rom reinstall ppc pim backup and restore. I found tghat if you used sktools or spb backup then put a different rom on it messed things up.
spbbackup
very good software i just started to use it myself
it saves everything all settings for programs, tabs settings, tweaked settings everything. if your gonna flash, backup all your data with spb. it will save onto your memory card. then after flashing and hard resetting you reinstall the spb software onto your phone. launch it and choose restore then a few minutes later all your settings, contacts, programs r back on.
enjoy
superb thanks for both advices..I already to tried Spb Backup to backup my files but did not try to restore them yet...
Thanks
with sprite backup you can save yourself from having to install applications again. ive heard good things about it but havent tried myself. i think it costs also.
slightly off topic but i feel compelled to tell you that its "backing up" not "backuping"
I guess you are right...
thx for advice
I currently use sprite backup which works incredibly well when using the same rom. The thing I love the most is it creates an .exe so when I reflash I don't even have to install sprite backup, just run the already created .exe file on the SD card and it'll reinstall all my programs and everything for me
Problem though, if I flash a new rom it won't actually restore any important information. I believe this is due to going from 6.1 to 6.5 more than anything? I'd like to try SPB mobile shell on a different rom but I need all my contacts, messages, appointments and to a lesser extent programs to be transferred. Is there one that will do this?
PIMBackup is pretty good.
