HSDPA and ROGERS - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam ROM Development

Using various WM6 Roms I have noticed I always see UMTS and 3G along with my ROGERS network. I have never seen HSDPA show up even though it is enabled.
Anyone have any suggestions? What am I missing?
Thanks,
Draven
PS - Currently on radio 1.51 but would like suggestions as best current ROM for ROGERS. I have seen several posts, but they are several months old. Need to know if 1.43, 1.47, 1.48 or 1.50 is best for ROGERS.

I'm on Rogers as well in Alberta. Where do you see 3G in Canada for Rogers? Just curious

3G is HSDPA.
You should see 3G in the golden horseshoe (Niagra to Bowmanville).
http://www.shoprogers.com/store/wireless/services/vision/intro.asp

I've got 3G a few places in downtown Edmonton.

down town toronto it always show 3g... but i am a pay as you go customer and i dont have access to it...

All along the Golden Horseshoe as NestorK said is 3G (Toronto down to St. Catharines and part of the falls).
I understand HSDPA is 3G but UMTS is as well just another flavorn (for lack of a better term) and its a bit slower.. I was just wondering if I should be seeing HSDPA instead of UMTS
Just curious.. thanks for the replies guys.
Draven

If it says 3G, its using UMTS not GSM. 3G has data, and it also has HSDPA similar to GPRS versus EDGE. If it says H than you are using the fastest data service called HSDPA. HSUPA is not available yet. the difference is under HSDPA the uplink is still slow
Toronto is covered.

I'm using an unlocked ATT 8525 on Rogers network. Does anybody here know the Rogers connection setup?
Thanks in advance

You guys talking like as if the display said so ( you are in 3G zone ) then it means you can access lightning speed ..etc
don't you have to have a data plan 1st ??
and here in Canada ... those plans are really at cut-throat prices !!!
as I understand it .. Rogers have a service called "VISION" ... but you don't just freely surf ... it's pre-packaged around their own broadcasting hub/server ..etc ... you can only access what they feed/provides ( limited )
anyone can show me differently ??

Yes, you do need a data plan, though you don't necessarily need Vision Data.
I've had data access for several years. (Back when it was called "Portage"). It's 20.00 for 1.5Mb. I live way outside of the 3G network in the GTA so I mainly have EDGE. My TYTN kicks into 3G when I'm in the area, though, and the speed difference is significant.
UnicornKaz, there are no feed restrictions that I'm aware of. I have no issues when I am in the GTA wrt browsing, and can access any site I desire. Even porn, or, umm... so I've heard.

draven, which diff wm6 roms have you tried? any specific ones you find works good with the tytn on rogers? i've got the tytn but havent had a chance to try out wm6, hoping to soon though.
all around the gta it shows 3g coverage.. really cant wait for a decent data plan. maybe if we're lucky apple will push rogers to intro some type of unlimited data plan in order for them to carry the iphone

There's something in the works for the iPhone this fall but I suspect it won't be anything fantastic. Maybe the hordes of iPhone owners complaining about the crappy data prices will force them to relent and actually price out plans that are useful. (The iPhone is practically useless without a decent data plan -- might as well own a regular phone)
I won't be holding my breath. Not until someone unseats Rogers as the sole GSM carrier in Canada or the gov't steps in will we see anything in terms of data prices that are even remotely similar to what they enjoy in the US (the irony being that most other countries look at the US plans and laugh at them).
On the technical side, have you tried radio 1.51.xx? on Rogers yet? I consistently get good 3G coverage in the Golden Horseshoe and at least one bar extra on the GSM/EDGE areas.

What the heck can you do with 1.5Mb ??? or are you referring to the speed ??
browsing a couple of videos ( not even )- will be more then that !!!
we need "unlimited" data transfer though !! ... I remembered the one & only time I downloaded a regular JPG and it cost me like $3 ... so I stay away from any data plan at all !!

Good for you.
I don't spend my time straining my eyes watching videos on a 2.8" screen, so the plan works for me. If it doesn't work for you then don't get it. I was pointing out the Rogers Vision plans aren't necessary to get into the game. I also pointed out I don't have 3G where I live so it's pointless considering something beyond what I have.

Tried a few different radios as per some suggestions here in the forums and found that 1.47 seems to be the best radio for Rogers on the TyTN with WM6.
I am using DopodLiteV1.1WM6 at the moment.. nice and small, very quick and leaves it open to customize the way you like which is nice. Not a ton of apps you dont need.
I am also currently using EMOZE for push email and it is working like a charm.
Hope this helps.
Draven

Hopefully now that Bell has started to offer unlimited data plans on their network rogers will feel the pressure to come up wiht something comparable. I am still on fido because I dont get charged roaming fees for data in the USA, but with only 5mb's its kinda limiting on what I can do with the phone. Let's hope the iphone forces ROgers to come up with something better that we Hermes owners can use.

Fido HSDPA
I'm on the Fido network in Montreal (I'm assuming that its the same network as Rogers) and I see the H icon for HSDPA. I'm reluctant to see if it actually works since under my plan I'd have to pay $35 per MB downloaded. Their prices are bloody murder.

We ALL should get HSDPA
As long as you have 3G enabled in the ROM you will connect on HSDPA.
I live in the GTA and I get HSDPA most of the time.
What may be an issue for you lot is that you do not have the HSDPA icon enabled on your OS. So you may be on HSDPA, but just don't realise it. There is a registry setting for it, or if you use Schap's ROM there is a checkbox for it under advanced config. Once set you will better see if you are using HSDPA or not.
As for plans....I agree hopefully when the iPhone is release (dec is the rumour) there will better data plans....but I'm not holding my breath.

Special on Rogers 5$ ONLY for 10MB on their Vision Plan per month, instead of 10$.. This includes FREE Local Video Calling using your 3G phone for 3 YEARS, 3 month of email and I think 3 months of browsing (not true browsing, it only brings you to their sites that take very few megabytes to bring up). Emails somehow bring you to their specific email site, and I think there is very little functionality in the email app. So, all in all, I might try the Vision plan, if only for the Free Video calling for 3 years. I don't need the other stuff because it is really low calibre apps. I will continue to use my other data package. Not sure you they count the MB on the Vision, because apparently it is not using your typical data connection, but somehow they must be able to find out. Free Local Video means everything that is not typically counted as a Long distance call,, so that is a little more generous that I thought at first. Also,, most important,, I will try it out, but must make sure that if it does not perform to my satisfaction, that I can CXL without a penalty (max 100$) if you cxl Vision before 3 years. and last but not least,, I found out from a CRS that there are bugs with Hermes Tytn using Vision right now (not sure how serious they are). I am not sure that they will spend too much energy on trying to fix Vision for the Tytn,,maybe spending more on the Kaiser if they bring that in,, and on many more HSDPA phones that they are bringing in in the next month or so that can work with Vision. So,, that is the scoop.. If I have gone astray in my explanation of this, please feel free to comment or correct me. Thx

I'm on Rogers and my data plan is 500MB for 80$

AT&T's TP2 (Tilt 2) and AT&T's Network (Data Connection)

I really have to ask....how is your data connection?
Mine works great on WiFi....so great. However, using AT&T's 3G network.....is horribly slow for me. At times, I can't really do anything at all.
I live in a major city (Vegas), and the area's I generally find myself in usually have a perfect signal....so its either the network itself....or the phone, that's at fault here. With the time I have spent customizing it, I am really hoping it's not the phone lol. I want to make sure this isn't me having this issue.
How is AT&T's data connection for everyone else?
Update: Through tethering the phone to a laptop and using the laptop to access speedtest.net, I got:

I agree that the ATT 3G speed has been very disappointing for me, in fact, even though I am showing a 3G connection, I get speeds of 600k to 800k only doing speed tests.
I'm out in West Los Angeles, which is an area pretty well served by ATT I'd imagine.
I had the issue with Fuze in Vegas. Perfect signal with H but no data flowing (sometimes it worked but mostly not). In all cases, switch to edge helped, so it must be an issue with AT&T hardware in Vegas. Do you connect via MediaNet? I though that may be using different wap access point would help (isp something instead of wap). But that would require more expensive plan, of course.
slow data connection
Ok, had to jump in to this "support group" I was a Tilt user who had to switch to iphone 3G after tilt was stolen (Fuze screen too small). Waited patiently for Tilt 2 all the while badmouthing the appletards who swore by the iphone. Got my Tilt 2 yesterday and realized my iphone screen and internet connection was much more responsive and reliable. WTF? I don't remember the tilt not connecting. Int the Tilt 2 opera freezes if I have both the 3g and wifi data streams running. I have had to turn off one or the other to get any data in opera, but it is still slow as molasses compared to the iphone. Anyone else having these issues. i hope its an opera/bloatware issue fixable with a cooked ROM. Waiting to see what happens when the cooks get some time with the tilt 2 before I take the plunge, but also considering going back to an iphone and getting the newer 3gs while I wait for the Leo.
Tilt 2 in North Carolina
I cant complain about my data speeds I get between 1.6 to 1.9 megabytes sec in north carolina.

Lucky you! I am really starting to think its my phone...
I live in the DC area and my Tilt 2 compared my Iphone 3gs is painfully slow. This is def. an issue of device priority.
I'm having this same problem. What's going on? My Bberry Bold was very fast.. and now both Opera AND IE on my Tilt 2 is slow.
I hope someone fixes this.
My Fuze was faster than my Tilt 2. I notice as the progress bar moves, it appears to just lag for quite a while about a quarter of the way along.
My guess is there's something up with the Tilt 2.
Is there a reason why? Will this be fixed as time goes by AT&T? Or are we stuck with an expensive, slow internet phone?

I would think so. I am sure if they didn't plan on fixing it and fast that they might have a class-action suit against them....for blocking access to something your paying for. It isn't just an expensive phone, but your being forced to pay monthly for a high-speed unlimited connection your not even getting...not cool.
Then again, look how long it took for a class-action to spring up for the no-MMS capability issues in the past with the iphone. They put it on the back burner until a year or so later when they finally decided to threaten suite against them.
Observations
While I was configuring the stock rom through one of the handy configuration editors found around the net, I've noticed 2 things:
1) The E(dge) icon is disabled, meaning that it will always show you as being on 3G, even if you are on a 2G(G) or 2.5G(E) Network
2) HSUPA support is disabled... Now this is not the HSDPA icon (which changes 3G into H), but the acutal HSUPA support (which AT&T may or may not support).
These are listed under the Data Connection area in version 3.3.3.0 of Julien Schapman's Advanced Configuration Tool...
I don't know that these will help in any way, but figured I'd bring it to the attention of the masses...
Well, after doing some additional testing and what not, I'm now consistently getting speed rests of 850k to 1.1M or so.
Its no HSUPA (which I have enabled), but is good enough to stream youtube and what not without issue.
I have Advanced Configuration Tools installed and did enable both edge icon and enabled HSUPA support but my speed hasn't changed
For some reason when doing speed test it shows up as fast, but actually time seems really slow. Is this due to the proxy that at&t uses?

I'm getting mixed results from this, actually. Sometimes it works pretty well. Sometimes it doesn't even load the web page I'm going to.
Is this the phones problem or a network thing?
Are there any steps I can take to make it work more consistently?
Everything seemed much quicker to me after I disabled AT&T's proxy. Of course, you can't access things like AppCenter or http://device.home/ but I never use those anyway. On the AT&T ROM there is a shortcut to disable the proxy in Start/Tools/Proxy Manager. However I found that this only works for IE. To disable it in Opera also, I had to edit \Windows\Opera\opera.ini and set the Use HTTP and Use HTTPS proxy settings to 0, then soft reset. You can change the settings in opera:config but for me they didn't stick unless I edited the ini file directly.
I switched back and forth between the stock AT&T radio and the HTC radio.... HTC radio is DEFINITELY working better for me.
Speed test results from stock ATT radio rom: 400k to 600k, I did 3 tests, all were in that range.
Speed test results from HTC radio rom: 750k to 1.1M... I did 4 tests, all were in that range.
I did them all from the same exact spot... my office at work, all within 2 hours of one another.
I also am getting 1-2 more sat's in GPS (google maps, getting 8-10 sats) using the HTC radio

AT&T 3G data network on the T-Mobile G2

Hello everyone, this is my first thread so please be gentle!
I currently have a G1, and hope to put it to rest very soon, and get the new G2!
(staying true to the "G")
I use an AT&T sim card on my current G1.
I have been lurking (for quite some time now) on these forums trying to find an answer to using the AT&T Sim Card on the G2. I have yet to find my answer through searching.
The capabilities I'm looking for to use on a G2 with an AT&T sim card include:
at least 3G network data speeds
normal use of calling
(I live in the US, and I don't know if that allows me to have 3G instead of EDGE)
Some things I have found:
In one other forum it said the AT&T would work on the G2, however it would only work on the EDGE network. (which I believe is 2G? please clarify if you can)
"
TMO's 3G network runs on the 1700Mhz spectrum.
AT&T's 3G network runs on the 850 and 1900Mhz spectrum.
The G2 is incapable of operating on AT&T's 3G network but will work just fine on the EDGE network.
"
the "[Guide] Subsidy Unlock, SuperCID, and Radio S-OFF" presents a sim unlock, so would that mean I could use the 3G data networks on AT&T? and have local calling? or is that something else?
Thanks in advance!
The Subsidy Unlock would allow the use of the AT&T sim card. I'm quite sure you wouldn't get the 3G+ speeds. Edge only, just like the G1.

That was from someone in the sim unlock thread. Not sure if any network chosen means 2g/3g but I would think 3g would be supported.

It isn't just your phone, I don't think any phones ever come out with the correct bands for ATT and Tmobile...Even the N1 which is supposed to be a world phone was only EDGE on ATT
The T-Mobile G2 will not work with 3G on AT&T (as you stated in the original post, the 3G or UMTS bands are different). It will instead use the regular GSM bands for 2G data.
If you want a Desire Z that works on AT&T's 3G, you have to get the NAM version offered by Bell Canada (check out the Desire Z forums). Once unlocked, it'll work fine on AT&T's 3G network.

Actually, Nokia's latest smartphones are pentaband - they can use 3G on AT&T, T-Mobile, and the European networks. This includes the C7, N8, and upcoming E7.
I have the N8 right now and have used it on both AT&T and T-Mobile with 3G.

Definitely works on 3G AND can be used with a 'dumb-phone' data plan ($10/month unlimited) =D

How do you get the $10/mo data plan? I don't have that option!
Yeah I know this is going a little off topic (sorry mods)
but I think he's talking about individual unlimited data plan for "basic" phones?
I kept trying to pester AT&T about it.
So is it true you don't need the DataPro plan in order to acheive 3G data networks with smartphones?
And you can use the "basic" unlimited data plan for cheaper for the same 3G networks?
The AT&T reps kept saying otherwise.

I have a family plan with an Iphone line (sister). My phone (originally a BB when contract signed) and 2 Dumbphones (parents)
What I did was, take my SIM card, and put it into one of the dumbphones. Went into ATT and had them add unlimited Data to that line at the $10 option. (And cancel the BB services since I wasn't using the phone anymore - told them I sold it on CL) Went home and returned the SIM into my BB and I was all set to go with unlimited Data. The only thing that didn't work with the BB was the push Email services...
If you go to your online account with ATT it will show you an image of the device you are using with service and although it showed my device as a BB at the time, (after returning the SIM to the BB) the $10 plan continued to work without any hitches.
Now that I have a phone that is unbranded with an IMEI # that ATT doesn't recognize, they don't have an image for my phone, so they have no way to detect that I am using a smartphone.
I have used the $10 plan with many devices: BB, Touch Pro, Nokia E71, etc and have never had any problems.

Yes that is the plan that I am referring to and yes the reps are full of crap. ATT wants to charge you more for having a 'smartphone' even though you use the exact same data, frequencies, and service as other users. There are many ways around this, but going into an AT&T store and trying to 'reason' with them is not one. I suggest the method I used with a dumbphone. Alternatively, you can do the same process online through account manager without having to deal with a live person.
Side question here. I'm thinking about giving the G2 to a friend on AT&T. The thing is that he doesn't want to pay for a data plan. Will AT&T force a data plan onto the line? Also un checking data enabled, will that stop all data over the cellular network so he doesnt get charged at all?

I don't think they can force a data plan as the phone is not being subsidized by ATT because of a contract.
In theory disabling data will stop all data but in reality he will probably still use a bit of it. Search the forums as I remember another user having the issue of zero data use.

I finally did the whole unlock, super CID thing using gfree and adb.
Just want to make that no one has found a way to get 3G speeds on the G2?
Or is EDGE my only choice? I understand the whole band thing as well.
No. From what I've gathered on the g2 being on at&t, its impossible as the radio hardware is different and will not pick up the 3g bands. Flashing a different radio to match up the bands won't work, either (it will possibly brick your phone, actually.)
Go with the NAM Desire Z from bell canada. Its your best bet.

GN users on AT&T...here's how I got a 4G HSPA+ plan

EDIT: A user mentioned that if you have unlimited data, trying to get on the correct HSPA+ plan could mess with that, so don't try this unless you want to risk losing unlimited data. I'm completely unsure if it would keep your unlimited data or not, but I thought I'd throw that out there.
So for those of you who are either coming from the iphone or another non-4g hspa phone (or are new to AT&T) and using the galaxy nexus, you will be put on the regular smartphone data plan. First of all, there are 3 different data plans for smartphones:
regular smartphone data
smartphone data for 4G phones
smartphone data for 4G LTE phones
The data plan you want to be on with the GN is the "smartphone data for 4g phones" which is the HSPA plan. Like I said, most of the people activating a GN on AT&T will automatically be put on the regular smartphone data plan, which will limit your speeds, even if your phone shows it's on HSPA.
After spending about an hour on the phone with AT&T customer service, I FINALLY found someone who knew EXACTLY what the GN was and what I wanted to do. Basically, the AT&T systems DO NOT allow employees to even manually override and put a 4G data plan on our account for the GN, so the guy had to do a workaround and he activated an atrix on my account, put my account on the 4g HSPA plan, and then reactivated my GN which KEPT the 4g plan on there.
After this, my speeds have dramatically improved. I always thought the phone would only switch to "H" in the signal bar when using heavy data (I thought it was a phone feature...you guys know how it always switches from 3g to H constantly? This is what I'm talking about), but after getting the 4g hspa plan on my account, the phone stays on H for MOST of the time. It'll still switch to 3g, but before making the change, it was showing 3g most of the time.
In conclusion, there are two ways to do this which the guy explained to me:
1. You can find someone with an AT&T 4g phone (atrix, insprie, infuse, s2, etc), pop in your sim in THEIR phone to activate that phone on your account, go to "manage features" on your account, switch to smartphone data for 4g phones, and submit. After that, pop the sim back in your nexus and it will keep the 4g plan.
2. Or if you don't know anyone who has one of these phones, call up 611 and have them do it for you (which is what I did). I'll be honest, it's a pain in the ass because you actually have to find someone who knows what you are trying to do and knows what the galaxy nexus is (not to be sexist...but I spoke to 3 women and they had no idea what I was trying to do...the first guy I talked to knew exactly what I wanted).
Once you find a person who knows about the GN and unlocked phones in general, explain that your account has the regular smartphone data plan on there which is limiting you to 3g speeds even though you have an HSPA phone (this is where the customer service person knowing what the GN helps out a lot), and you need him to manually put the 4g plan on your account. Since the system won't allow this, he needs to use an IMEI number from any of their 4g phones (atrix, infuse, inspire, etc), actiivate that on your account, then switch it over (basically same as step one except you aren't physically putting your sim in another phone).
Hope that helps. I'm happy as hell now because it was bothering me to be limited to 3g speeds even though I have an HSPA phone.
I tried to get a direct line for you guys to call the guy I spoke to, but unfortunately he didn't have one.
My speeds on a regular (unlimited grandfathered data) are very fast. 5-6 mbps.
I just popped my sim in and went (on the Cingular 410 or whatever).
I added the manual HSDPA+ access point, and noticed no difference. Still 5-6 mbps on average.
What are you getting that requires these hoops? I can't imagine much faster?

Around 10mbps in good areas, and more than double what I was getting at my house before changing the plan (low signal area).
Like I said, even if your phone shows it on HSPA (by either the "H" in the signal bar or "HSPA" in signal settings), AT&T is STILL limiting your speeds because you only have the regular data plan on your account. You need the correct data plan on YOUR ACCOUNT to get the speeds you deserve.
Nothing to do with APN's....I am using the stock APN. It's all about AT&T limiting your speed (automatically...by what data plan you have on your account), so you need to get the correct plan on there.
nice post, i just got off the phone with them and they originally put me on a 4G LTE plan instead of just 4G HSPA.
Was getting tons of service issues. Hopefully this solves my problems.
Thanks bro. I'm calling now.
I'm super nervous about having someone across the world monkey with my grandfathered unlimited data, so I'll pass. Just not worth the risk of someone changing my plan to tiered...

Understandable if you have unlimited data, but I don't, so I didn't mine someone doing whatever they could to get me on the correct plan.
Edited the OP also.
i had them email me our changes at the end of the call and told them to specifically include unlimited data.

If you're in the US who across the world is messing with your AT&T grandfathered plan?
Anyway, I jsut called AT&T and the rep knew exactly what I wanted to do and hooked me up. When I get off work I'll test the speeds. I'm thinking about getting a new SIM card for the heck of it.
BTW: the rep was a woman LOL at OP.
Have to find someone to do for me again. I've been switching back and forth from the iPhone. Good to know it still works. There was a gentleman on XDA who works for AT&T that got referrals or something for doing it. Cool dude, I wish I could remember his user name.

Are you suggesting 100% of AT&T's call centers consist of US based workers?
I think not. I don't want to gamble with a language barrier with "Peggy" (i.e. Rackashana) going into my account and making changes. I just don't trust that a perfect preservation of my unlimited plan will be the outcome from the hokey language barrier conversation.

No, it's not. Making a statement like "keep hanging up until you get a guy on the phone, the women have no clue what they're talking about" would be sexist.
He merely pointed out a fact - three women he spoke to had no clue, the first guy he talked to immediately helped. Any inference or conclusions drawn from this pattern would be on the reader.

Sprint 3g speeds

Is anyone having trouble on 3g. Seems much worse than my Evo. Having trouble connecting to Xda, Facebook etc. During in my car in the same place I eat lunch everyday and I barely have 1 to 2 bars.
I am just an old fashioned country doctor Jim.
Please put sprint tittle on the topic
Anyways try to update prl and profile, if that don't work call sprint to help, they probably will reset your data settings, and it might help, what speeds are you getting on it?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
I can say that the 3G 100% better on the S3 than my OG Epic. It is also now 10x faster and 33% lower latency since Sprint either upgraded or fixed the tower(s) covering downtown Denver, CO.
Which is really good since I don't expect to see LTE for another 18-24 months!
Well try that thanks. Will upload some speeds when I get a chance later.

3g has degraded for me. At work I use to get about 1.5mpbs. Now I'm lucky to get .7mbps. I avg about .4mbps. This may have something to do with iphones sharing the same 3g. I really miss wimax as I used to get it almost everywhere I go. I live in the bay area.

Funnily enough, slower for me here in Long Island. I'm lucky to pull over 512k down and up here in my office. I was often getting higher then 1mbit but it's sprint so there was always fluctuation.
I never really had any complaints with Sprint speeds on 3G but after playing with this phone on my office wifi for most of today - I wish LTE was around already, this hardware really deserves better speeds.
it depends on what tower I'm connected to. at home (South Philadelphia, pa), it's nice and zippy. at work (Port Richmond, Philadelphia, pa) it's awful, but that seems to be the trend near my job. Verizon was almost as bad, everyone on t-mo and metro have issues, and at&t is terrible, as well. i don't know what the problem is, Sprint even has a dedicated tower only a block from my job.

I'm actually getting better speeds on my s3 than any other sprint phone EVER. I consistently get over 1mbps where on my iPhone and gs2(on 3g) I would never even get over 600kbps. It makes not having wimax or lte that bad
I am assuming it has to be Sprint because my wife just bought Evo 4G LTE and having the same problem .

As a reader of several forums, it is apparent to me that there is a pattern of such anomalies being reported by some end users of Sprint's LTE-capable phones in some areas. Remember that these new devices right now are connecting to the legacy EVDO and 3G network, which is in the process of being replaced completely on a localized basis in Sprint's Network Vision rollout.
Because these anecdotal reports are sporadic, and seem to affect more than one LTE device design, while most users report no such problems, I suspect that something is going on with the interaction of these devices with the under-construction network locally. Hopefully this is temporary. The phones are supposed to work fine with the legacy network, and with the under-construction changeover, but I suspect there are some issues.
Sprint has not owned up to any such problems. So we just don't know for sure. Personally, if I were one of those affected, I would not accept a two-year contract beyond the 14-day trial without concrete commitments from Sprint to fix this.

I wish I could get 3g speeds like that from Sprint, and that is why I am switching to Verizon.
Below are the screenshots of 3g speedtest.
Sprint on the left, Verizon on the right.
It is highly variable on location.I was driving home in traffic through Staten Island and the speeds varied from 2 mb down to .4 mb down and 1 mb up to a low of .2 up. Tried it at four locations. The worst is by far my home in Jersey, .4 down, .2 up. Thank God for Wi-Fi.

I got an EVO 4G LTE and returned it after 4 days. My wife got one at the same time. The MAX download speed I ever got was like 300k. Averaged about 50k.
My S3 on ATT LTE gets 20mbps.

Network vision upgrades are helping to disrupt service. Its all over the net, and in Sprint forums. I was able to attain 1.92 down and 1.1mb up on 3g in certain areas of the Bronx, NY, and Jamaica Queens in the last 30 days!

I beat that speed on 3g with my Sprint GS III in the Bronx, and my Photon in Jamaica queens NYC. To all of the people that switched to Verizon at a time when Network Vision is rearing it's head is a shame. Their lack of investigating the issues will cause them to pay more for the next 2 years while people like me will save lots and have unlimited data.

GSM Nexus speed on AT&T (Austin, TX)

I don't know if this is a question or more of a poll...
I think I'm getting horrible 3G speeds here in Austin, TX. It also seems like I'm being capped. When I have full bars, speedtest always shows around a 3Mbps down and 1 Mbps up transfer speeds. I've tested this in many places around North Austin / Round Rock.
What speeds are others getting?
Could my sim card or data plan need tweaking from AT&T? I ask this because I was previously on a Galaxy Note with LTE and they had to switch me to a LTE plan at the time. Outside where I work, the LTE signal strength is very strong and I've gotten amazing speeds with the Note. But with the Nexus, I get the 3/1 speeds.
Any ideas?
What are your APN settings, also are you on the smartphone or medianet plan?

Thank you for helping me.
I'm on a smartphone plan. Which APN settings are you wanting? There are a lot!
I live in Bastrop, like 30 miles east of Austin, and am getting about 2.5-3 down and .4-1.2 up. I was pretty disappointed because I thought I had remembered pulling more on my Captivate(smart phone plan though), too bad it broke. I'm using the MediaNet plan on ATT with AndroidHD Revolution(4.1.1) and Franco r223.

If you're on the smartphone plan, I'm assuming you're using the "phone" apn? Also, you're aware that you can get unlimited hspa with the non smartphone plan formerly known as media net.
Who knows this could be purely speculation but let's say AT&T already has your imei number you could be automatically bumped to the same smartphone data plan if you attempt to use the dumb phone plan.
I am unsure how quick AT&T is figuring this stuff out. I had an AT&T GS2 and switched to a dumb flip phone then bought a GNex, took the sim card out of the dumb one and transplanted into the GNex and boom, unlimited data and texting for $30 a month.
I'm already on an unlimited smartphone plan. I chatted with AT&T support and there are currently no restrictions on my data plan. He also switch IMEI from the Note to the Nexus and moved me from a LTE plan to 3G plan. Data speeds remain the same.
I wonder if anyone with a GSM Nexus in Austin is able to get > 3Mbps...
Try the phone apn?

You are on a SGS2 with HSPA+? Which city are you in?
Try testing with actual downloads instead of speed test sites. My speed test (I'm in northern Colorado) always tells me about 3Mb/s down 1Mb/s up too, but on actual downloads and manual tests, I hit 8-10 Mb/s even in kind of rural areas.
I'm in Indiana and get around 3-4mbit down and 1-1.5mbit up. The fastest ive seen once is 7mbit down.

I remember with the captivate, the speeds would vary widely depending on which part of town I was in. But with the Nexus, it just seems very artificial to hit right around 3 down / 1 up every time. Almost like AT&T is capping it similar to what they did to the captivate. The modem AT&T put on the captivate was throttled for whatever reason but flashing an international modem removed it.

Yeah. I had to send my Gnex in for service. Only got to use it for 17 days
Harbor Springs Michigan
Sorry to bring back an old thread, but I am wondering on this myself. I bought my gnex from google play, got it and noticed that the data rates are pretty steady at around 2.5 - 3.5 max down, and .9 - 1.2 up. The gnex has a 21Mbit HSPA+ radio in it, so in theory it should accept whatever AT&T can push to it. However, I came from an Atrix 2, and can vouch for the fact that the Atrix 2 when using the PTA APN on HSPA+ (no LTE for about 200 miles where I'm at) will download consistently between 7 - 9 Mbit... Same server on speediest.net, same APN, same place, the signal is within 1dBm of each other.
Because I have found no base band that can change this, nor any APN setting I am starting to believe that if AT&T gets an IMEI of a phone that it doesnt recognize, they will throttle it.
Any one else have any insight? 3.5Mbit is plenty, but I'd like to get the same speeds as what I consider a lesser device.
If I could find a way to change the IMEI I'd test this theory.
^^^ Suprisingly, Its not att at all. Ask anyone on these forums, samsung has notoriously bad radios. Signal and cell strength just are not that great. And you can you can especially feel the difference coming from a motorola device. They have the strongest radios of all the major oems by far. No one even comes close.
