Im new to this arena and im looking to upgrade my X50 (Pocket PC 2003)i would like to do WM6 but i dont know if its possible. It seems like all of the successful flashes occur with the VGA versions. Can i flash my X50 with it, and the same question goes for WM5. I cant find any rom that has the standard X50 in the title. I dont want to brick it so im being alittle careful. Can someone point me in the right direction?

It's great that you're being careful! You have to be one of the smartest X50 users I've seen lately in this forum! Currently, the only WM5 and WM6 ROMs in this forum that I'm aware of are for the VGA Axims only. Those would be the X50v and X51v. You cannot flash either of the X50v ROMs to your X50, unfortunately. You will end up with a brick as many X50 users have found out the hard way. Yes, some have recovered successfully, but it's definitely not a good thing for your blood pressure/stress level. I wish I had some better news for you, but that's about all I can tell you. You probably already have done this, but a quick search or two in these forums will probably confirm (or disprove) my answer. Perhaps an X50 user somewhere along the way will come up with a ROM for X50s.
so how would i go about creating a rom for wm5 for my x50?

Start researching...
Honestly, I have not created a ROM before. I know how to do some basic ROM stuff, but I don't know how to build/modify one to create a working one for another device. There are lots of helps in these forums if you take the time to find them. Obviously, making a working ROM is a lot of work and something that should not be taken lightly. There are lots of different ways to brick a device by poorly building a ROM. However, if you're really serious about it, I'm sure you will have the drive to do your research and find answers. Some more experienced ROM creators who have experience with Axim devices are Football and MagLite_RUS. They might be able to give you some direction. Good luck.

One of my sales guys has just brought a spanking new XDA Exec he received from O2 as an upgrade. It's ROM, albeit still WM5, is definitely newer than the one available from O2 UK web site. E.g. ExtROM ends with .23x, and ROM itself is I think .16x.
I know there's a way to easily dump this ROM. I'd like to upgrade myself, and I'd gladly share it with you. In fact, he's quite keen to share it.
Only I found that I know how to flash a ROM into XDA, but I don't know how to strip it from an XDA...
Any tips as to where do I go for the tools? Am willing to do the search, only where?
The tool(s) must allow a nonexperienced person to dump his XDA's ROM into a file for me.
some rom upgrade programs will ask you if you want to save the current version in case you decide to downgrade later, I don't know if this is one of them, but if it is, you just might be able to start the upgrade process and save the old rom then cancel. Don't do it until someone with more knowledge weighs in on the issue. and please do post the rom if and when you get it, Thanks!!!!
Haven't done it in a long while. Have a look here:

and here:

Ideally use the mtty/d2s methods. Any rom dumper you run on the phone itself (as opposed to your pc) will not give an ideal virgin rom dump.

I wonder if it's worth a bother extracting this newer ROM.
On one side, everybody seem to be so much preoccupied with newer WM6 ROMs.
On the other side, many people decide to go back to WM5 after testing the Beta ROMs because one or more critical function(s) is missing in their world picture.
So I thought, may be for those who "repented" a newer official O2 XDA Exec ROM.
Am I the only one who has seen a production WM5 ROM newer than what's on O2 site?

Nope, I also have just got a new O2 Exec, with a ROM they don't have on their website (the obvious or the awkward to find place!)
I also would like to extract the ROM for exactly the same reason, ie decide to go back.
I assume you haven't hd any luck yet?

Im wondering if its possible to create a rom for an x50 using WM6. Im new to this crowd but i dont have a problem getting my hands dirty. I have some experiance creating and hacking non WM phones so i figure i can probably keep myself from drownding.
I know almost all of the new PPC's and Smartphones are VGA, does WM6 only run on VGA phones? also it seems the only roms out there for WM6 are for VGA devices, is that the reason?. Im also wondering how hard it would be to modify an existing WM6 rom for the x50v so that it would work with the x50(if thats possible).
my PPC is 520mhz with 128mb ram QVGA
I would greatly appreciate some help/nudge in the right direction.
Kind of duplicate thread of http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=323523
The process is probably the same as building a rom for a x50v, which is easier than doing it for an x51v as there is an issue for creating/modifying xip. However You can check if you can directly re-use x50v xip.
KINDA...helps
The thread helped alittle, pointed me to the tools. However, i still dont know if its possible and i dont want to try it and have the result of a bricked PDA.
I don't see why it would not be possible. You need to extract your nb0 to start, since you have it, you can always recover from a corrupted rom. I had already extract file from a x51 rom with success using those tools. I don't have any x50, x51 device to try it. But I already modified several x51v rom using those tools to be able to fix the CF bug on Football A17 rom.

Hi
Well...
I tried to start up looking into the differences in the roms but i can't even open them
Ill try some more but i think it's just waist of time. U really need a good coder like football to do this...
Let's hope someone can do the magic for x50/x51 like he did with the v editions
By the way, isn't there a possibility to port a x51v to a x51 rom ?
Call me stupid, but I have searched around ALOT on this forum for an answer to my question but have yet found any relevance to what I am looking for.
I want to start cooking my own Artemis ROM's. As far as I have read the easiest way is by using something called HyperCore kitchen. Now, I've started using this, but have found out afterwards that cooked ROM's available to download on here, cannot be extracted properly so as to be able to make one of them custom for what I want.
And as there is no official WM6.1 ROM for the Artemis, I am at a loss.
Basically, what I am asking to do, is to find out how to port a Kaiser WM6.1 official ROM so that it would be usable on the Artemis. Alternatively, perhaps find out what files are required from the Kaiser ROM to make the official WM6 Artemis ROM into WM6.1.
I hope I haven't confused you all. Any help would be greatly appreciated, maybe from bepe, tom_codon, Anja, NhatHoa? Any of you guys still about these days?
90 Views and nobody else knows anything?
This is starting to bug me now
I have looked everywhere. I have used the search, the wiki, google! I can't find any reference anywhere that explains to me how I can properly make a WM6.1 ROM for my Artemis using the required 6.1 files from a Diamond ROM.
HELP!!!!!!!
Start off with a base ROM first instead of porting. Porting can get very tricky and complicated. I'm currently in the attempt of porting a ROM (for the Hermes) and let me tell you, it's not easy. If you want to know more, i can show you what i'm doing via IM (faster) or here.
Or 6 just to get the flashy bars. If there was a cab method I would prefer that. because being a novice I don't want to edit the registry. So what am i going to do in the end? What type of setup?
NO cab's! Only way is to flash the wm6 or wm6.1 OS rom. This guide explains it all in detail: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=299462
See veykas Sticky FAQ thread if U have further questions...Happy Flashing!
1st thing, Flash Hard SPL v7 onto your Hermes... Check in the upgrading section for this as it is generally one of the 1st 3 threads... Check out post 1160 (page 116) on how to do this with the sd card method.
I prefer the sd card method as its, I believe, safer than using the pc.
Flashing an OS by sd card is slightly different than flashing Hard SPL as, since you now have Hard SPL, you don't need SSPL.exe. Drop steps 5 & 6 of the sd card flashing instructions you find in the post above.
Cheers...
Hey guys thanks alot for your help but get this, I went to the att web-site or cingular or whatever and they had an official install and it was free and easy. i was surprised.

I am of the opinion that most people should stick with the "stock" AT&T v6.0 ROM. It will give them what they need with reasonable performance. Playing with custom ROMs should be look at as an avocation rather than a vocation. However, that being said, I'll probably keep experimenting with custom ROMs for a little longer.
I cant understand the difference between a rom and an intricate shell

are you ON something?
please elaborate what is a wm6 if not the same thing I got from the att website if so what's the point of ROMs are the bundled with their own software packages because I can see how that can be hindering to your platforms. Maybè 6.1 is an upgrade. What is WM6ROM?
you will see if you flash the shipped wm6 ROM, comparing that to VP3G's 'official' with less programs in them. With 6.1 it includes threaded messaging, and seems to be faster than the wm6 and you can have a working flash lite 3.1 with opera so you can play youtube videos off opera beta. Do some reading, obviously you have not read enough.
Maybe I will, I use vtap for youtube videos
Hello! Everyone,
I am desperately need some help. It's almost six months since I read about flashing custom roms and until now I can't find the courage to do it. For I don't muster enough knowledge (I think) in doing it.
I have an HTC Universal running in wm5. I want to flash it into wm 6.5. Is there some body who can forward me the suitable ROM and help me in the process of upgrading it? I really want to flash it to WM 6.5 so I can install cool looking GUI of e book reader in my device and some more eye candy stuffs.
Thanks in advance!
Hi,
Have a look on my signature link, you´ll find all you need to upgrade.
Hello, Orb!
Hello! Orb,
It would really help me if you can point out what are the preliminary things I need to do than saying click your signature.
That is really what you did last time I ask about how to upgrade my Unit. Until now It gave me no confidence because I don't know where will I begin. I hope you can re consider helping me out. Thanks!
read, Search, Respect and Enjoy!
I can tell you that the only way you´ll get to flash is to read a lot, we all started same as you, first of all loose the fear, if you follow the instructions all will be fine.
Said that you need to read my signature link, try looking in there for:
Instruction Guide For The Htc Universal Rom Upgrading
It was not so hard, isn't´it?
Good luck,
At least tell me the benefits of flashing ROM? Why will I flash my Device from windows mobile 5 to windows mobile 6?
Thank you so much!
More than benefits it´s an addiction for some of us
And of course you also have benefits, better, newer versions and so on
Nothing else I can´t say if you don´t flash
Good luck!
Hello! Orb,
I hope everything is fine at your end.
Regarding the upgrading/flashing of my device. What are the things that one could get if he/she flashed her device? In other words why would someone wants to upgrade his/her device?
What I mean by this question is, is there any reason why would a dopod 900 user like me would want to upgrade from windows mobile 5 to windows mobile 6.1? What are the things that I can do if I will upgrade?
Yes I think there would be some nice applications that can only be installed in Windows Mobile 6.1 or Windows Mobile 6.5 however, if I just install a program that would do a make over of my GUI, SPB mobile shell for instance, everything will be like the same even if it has different Versions of Windows Mobile for I am using the same alternative shell for my device as a GUI.
Any insights? or word of wisdom that could enlightened me? Thank you so much!
