Alpha Testers Needed: TouchNav (Scroll with your fingers) - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam ROM Development

Hi All,
I have been working on an enhancement that allows scrolling from anywhere on the screen, not just using the scrollbars. The idea is to tweak the UI so that it functions more intuitively. This app is still in Alpha. However, for those that like this functionality and would like to help me with testing and provide me with good suggestions, that would be extremely appreciative.
Short Description
-Loads on startup and places an icon on the home screen.
-Currently, a flicker of the startup screen will appear during bootup.
-May not work at times on initial loading of a window.
User Guide
1) Install the cab and reboot the device.
2) Once the device boots up, you will notice a new icon, which is just a way for you to close the application if you want to.
3) Once everything the device loads, you can test the tweak by opening the "Programs" window
4) Try to use your finger to scroll as you would with the scrollbar.
I hope this explain things a little more.
Thank and enjoy. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.
EDIT: Sorry everyone, I had to remove this cab. I will post up an update some time soon I hope.

Nice tweak
Count me in!
Edit : It's working great, only is it possible to delete the scrollbars?.

I've loaded, soft reset, the icon appeared at the home screen task bar. Clicked on the icon - a blank screen appeared and that's it....

Hi, there was a registry hack for WM5 to size the scrollbars..likely works in WM6, you could atleast make em smaller, if not size em out completely, I think, might give the wiki hacks a check, sorry I don't know it offhand.

User guide of sort
Sorry, should I posted a little description.

rathoughts,
Thanks for the release, the program seems run quite stable, however, few problems I have noticed:
* Some programs work some don't (PIE for example).
* Some programs need to try few times to get it to work.
* Tap function doesnt work (you can scroll up/down nicely in standard contact, however, tap and hold doesnt work, menu doesnt pop up).
My recommendation is, maybe in the furture release, you could add an "exclusive list" function so programs in the list will have TouchNav disabled.
Please keep up your good work

Hi rathoughts, sounds like it might be kinda cool, I know shame on me for not just installing it and trying it out, but does this function with like a throw effect, for example, if I am scrolling, and I run my finger upwards on the screen and release without stopping my finger on the screen, it would keep scrolling by itself, I have a scroll effect with my finger using PIEPlus, but I can get up and down the page much faster with the scroll wheel, cause using my finger and moving from top to bottom of the screen is kinda slow when it comes to browsing here at XDA for example, gotta do it a whole bunch of times, its all good if not, I just thought I would ask.
Edit, nevermind....I just seen its not working in PIE, in the above post

The tap and hold (context menu) issue is something I know about. I hope I can get that resolved so that it will allow this as well.

That is the idea for the next release.

Sweet, thanks for the reply, I swear Im surprised my scrollwheel still functions.

Really nice job!
This is the functionnality I really expected from TouchFlo better than the 3D cube!
I thought about working on such a program if TouchFlo technology couldn't be ported to Hermes, so I would gladly help you to work on this project if you want!
It would be nice if it supports scrolling accelerations and free scrolling (when you release the finger) like on Touch!

go into your PIE+ option for scroll, and increase the screen drag sensitivity.

I think I remember reading(haven't installed yet) that the scrolling is opposite from what we are used to?
Such as it should be like "dragging" so bottom to top would make it scroll downwards. Is it like this?

Sorry to wander offtopic, but thanks!
I had always just thought that related to pressure sensitivity for some dumb reason, and never tried it.

great work !!!im using PocketCM v0.6 and it screws up the scrolling in contacts ,otherwise awesome stuff.

It will be good if it's functioning as smooth as PocketCM ContactManager 0.11 scrolling. Just tried it on Shcaps 3.57a but not as expected. Good luck on your programming and hope to here good news from you soon. You got my vote.

Tested on WM6
Hello,
Tested this on iMate JasJam WM6 LVSW
It works in Programs folder and File Explorer(the default one)
Tried in PIE, Opera and Resco Explorer and unfo didn't work.
While touching the screen , the program was selecting items on the screen and no chance of scrolling.
Keep up the good work.

Looks great, will give it a try (and your carbon theme) when i finish with all the family Christmas fun.
Hopefully i will get some free time soon to get stuck into themes myself. Need to send the wife and kid on holiday for any chance of that though!
lol metal thats funny. Well when you get the chance please report back what you liked and what you didn't like about the install instructions, theme functionality and anything else you think I could have done better.
best of luck with the family and happy holidays!!
Just had a quick (i mean quick as well) look at the ipod theme.
GREAT THEME
Just a couple of things for the install instructions that might help people new to WAD.
You may not hace a themes folder in Wisbar folder, just create one.
To get to seetings in point 1, touch and hold anywhere on the screen.
Can i confirm that to unlock you just slide left to right. It got me sweating a bit when i thought my phone was locked with no way to get in. Tapping the screen like a nutter
Just going to have a look at your other theme now.
Would these be easy enough to make as a landscape version as well?
great feedback!!!!! updated the install instructions in post 1 and in the download.
Iphone theme
Hi Mallman
greatlooking theme - I am very new to WAD2 it looks like its got an amazing amount to give to HD owners.
How can I change the links to my own programs ie tomtom etc want to keep the icons but keep getting an error, did I say I was NEW to this !!
cheers
Jon
JPW,
If you access the menu (tap and hold on screen) and select 'author mode'
After that, tap and hold over the icon you want to change and change the link it has to the program

exactly right, and actions assigned to icons, text or anything else are known as "scripts". added to FAQ by the way
Great work on this and other themes Mallman! A question though, it seemed that the 'lock' button just refers to a page with a lock on it, and this page in turn refers back to the starting page of the theme.
Is it possible to have this button actually lock your device? Because locking my device also locks my volume buttons because I got so anoyed with constantly changing volume while i carry the device around.
Thx again for the work you are putting into this!

it probably is. In fact if you are running S2U2 (which I am not and dont really like) you could link the red lock icon to S2u2 and eliminate that start page altogether. Let me go see what can be done using only windows locking function. I just dont like using third party locking programs. Seem to cause me more headache than anything for answering the phone lol.
ps. thanks for your kind words as well.
Yeah I don't like the third party locking either. And although you can lock the phone with the powerbutton for some reason i also want the option to use the default software lock.
When i have some time on my hands I will venture into WAD2 themes myself, I'm decent with designing and so far understand the things possible with WAD2 (quite alot!).
Also something you might want to include in your starting posts is that these themes are made for WWE roms. I'm running a Dutch rom myself so basicly not a single button works on installation, not that i mind because its quite easy to replace them with the 'dutch links'.

ok after much research, the only thing I can get to work without using a third party locking app is to lock the device my shutting the screen off. This serves the exact purpose you are referencing. What it doesn't do is require an unlock, just have to press the top power button to turn on. I really love this feature now and it keeps the door open for those who want to install the third party apps. I have delete the lock page now so version 1.3 will have this feature with the useless lock page deleted. thanks for the input
and for everyone's knowledge, You cant call the lock function of the phone with an executable file. Seems it is in a dll somewhere and i just dont feel like messing with all of that
In addition to this and the Carbon Fibre themes, because I moved all of the exe's from the Programs folder into sub folders such as Entertainment, System Tools, Productivity, then none of the start links work. However, if you go into Author mode, press and hold, then select Properties, you can change the script application/link and Bob is your Aunt's husband
Good work.

lmoa, bob...
yes that is correct. I will be releasing a new version of Carbon Fiber tonight with a new system sliding doc attached to the start button instead of the start menu. this eliminates the dependency on WA3. I have also removed the "locked" page because 2 new buttons appear on the slider which can lock/turn off your screen and soft reset. A new analog vs digital clock function has been installed which makes the clock act as the TF3D clock does when you slide your finger up or down (switching from analog to digital). But look for that tonight
Excellent. I have now managed to change the order of the pages Home > Contacts > Calendar > Weather > Apps > Home which means the most used pages are a single slide left or right from the front page.
You are right about putting things down on paper otherwise it turns into a nightmare trying to work out where you are. Several times I got caught in a loop and had to use the 'home' button to get back to the desktop.

Improving IE9

I'm sure I'm not the first to think of this. And I believe there are some alternatives in the marketplace that do something similar (surfcube coming to mind). But here is what I think IE9 should do to make getting to your open tabs easier. You could also use this same concept to pivot to your favorites.
There will be a problem when you are zoomed in.
The gesture will conflict with scrolling.
One way around that is you only get to tiles when fully zoomed out, but then the idea is not that great anymore, it will be confusing for some people.

He said "Edge-Pixel-Detection", so you have to swipe from outside the screen into the screen to complete this gesture, which would work perfectly
Great idea. I would also add a similar page for bookmarks on the other side.
Or just give us Opera

Thats not very intuitive now is it?
There must be many better ways than this.
There are a lot of similar features hidden throughout Windows Phone that you have to just find or learn from someone else.
Not really when it comes to gestures, right?

Actually there are quite a few gesture and tap-and-hold type of features that are not at all intuitive (meaning, most people would probably not discover them on their own, unless by accident). Just look at the features of the SIP. I would bet that at least half of WP7 users still don't know that you can tap-and-hold the symbols toggle, and then slide your finger over a symbol to select it, which causes the symbol key set to be dismissed and returns to the alphabet key set.
but there might be problems in landscape mode, where some phones have capacitative buttons at the bottom it would get annoying if you accedentally hit the back button every time u wanted to switch tabs

Yeah I was actually thinking about this, especially after seeing the video of Windows 8, where they actually have this implemented. On Win8, it is from the top and bottom, and I was thinking, that wouldn't work on the phone because of the capacitive buttons. The solution my thoughts ended on was that when in landscape mode, it would work like Win8, and you would slide from the top and bottom (which is really the side, the same side that in portrait mode you would be sliding from). So the only thing that would really change is the gesture your hand is performing would change from a horizontal one to a vertical moving gesture.

Not exactly sure what this SIP feature you are talking about but there is a big difference with features having multiple gestures for the same feature, than haveing two different features with almost exactly the same gesture.
Thats not the same thing, its more confusing.

If you try our SurfCube browser for WP7, you can see that we have already implemented this and a lot more, with an added 3D twist.

All I need is a back button (cause seriously who uses forward) and a tab button and IE9 would be awesome. I like the idea of using your finger to swipe and view tabs, but instead it would be smarter to use a multi-fingered gesture. As said before, scrolling would get interfered with, and because you only scroll with one finger a two finger swipe would work.
Good idea.
But there are tons of simpler, if less effective, ways of opening tabs or favs. Instead, they chose to simply replace them with menus on Mango, as well as removing the very cool top black address-bar, replaced with a huge and ugly grey one, even in landscape. ù
So, my impression is that they simply borked the interface because they don't have a clue, and any good suggestion like yours will go into the trashbin, if anyone that matters actually reads it.
Also the single page for favs and history was very cool. And ie9 doesn't load most wordpress mobile-view comments. Way to go ie team, nice direction.
Edge-pixel detection is one of Nokia's more stupid ideas. Even the people who are being paid to demo the handsets mess up quite regularly, swiping from the edge when they want to scroll, resulting in unwanted app switching. It's a badly thought out concept, which is why nobody else has done it.

[APP][LAUNCHER] TasKarou Launcher Overlay

Tired of moving your fingers up/down your tablet to switch applications? Try out TasKarou!
TasKarou is a multitasking launcher overlay.
Taking inspiration from the 'Quick Controls' feature in the android browser, TasKarou provides a multitasking layer on top of a launcher on tablets.
By swiping anywhere on the left or right edge of your tablet screen, you can activate TasKarou's UI.
It gives you access to a quick, smooth, and intuitive interface to facilitate app launch, transition, and management for the user
The user interface brings a more responsive, and enjoyable level of interaction to your tablet.
Notes:
To use TasKarou, set it as the default home launcher, and from TasKarou's settings, select the actual home launcher you want to overlay.
TasKarou user interface is then triggered by swiping from either the left of right edge of your tablet screen, while still allowing access to the overlaid home launcher through the home button.
The app is also available in the android market.

It's not possible to use both at the same time, since both controls rely on the user touching the edge of the screen.
If you have an idea on how I could get around that issue, I'm all ear.

some ideas from the top of my head:
- disable taskarou menu completely when in browser
- disable one side of the screen (permanently or when in browser)
- disable the upper/lower/middle half of the screen (permanently or when in browser)
on another note, the notification HAS to go. at least make it optional.
that being said, i really do like the concept of the app :good: i found myself regularly swiping in from the screen edges when not in browser, and then being disappointed that nothing happened.

Thanks for your suggestions. I have a few other ideas along with the ones you suggest that I will try to integrate, and test in the following days.
In the meantime, I updated TasKarou to also support android phones. I duplicated this thread in the 'Android Apps and Games' section to make it more visible: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1984010

Definitely slick in some aspects. Can't say I really like it as it messes with my LMT set up and takes up more RAM on top of it.
There's a lot to be done like distinguishing different "hotspots" and designating right side only or left side only. Overall though I really enjoy the transitions and how the menu auto-switches based on which choices you're hovering over. Very intuitive choices too that I agree with about which things go where.
Looking forward to the potential this holds in the future. I may just abandon my LMT setup if done right.
Edit: And of course the ability for users to add/edit the options, potentially switch the color for mere superficial reasons. Something like my screenshot.

Maybe ask SwipePad's developer.
(I'm not being sarcastic)
Really useful. Love the idea, but it does cause a few conflicts with apps that rely on swiping from the sides of the screen. Having said that, when I set the margin to 13 pixels I can use the Dolphin browser (for example) without too many issues by not swiping from the outer edge, but by placing the finger a little more away from the edge and then swiping inwards. Other apps are less forgiving.
What about a button in the notification area, which is visible at all times anyways?
EDIT:
If swiping has the preference, then it would be more logical to align the available programs/tasks to the side from which was swiped. Swiping and selecting can be done with one hand then, regardless of which hand was used to swipe with.
The recents button is useless, I never use it, ever.
I'd like the option to use this instead and just disable the side activation altogether.
Nice idea. However on TF101 after getting the quick control moving the finger to one of the options too fast causes the quick controls to disappear. I have to move the thumb really slow in order to select any option. Hopefully, this will be fixed soon:fingers-crossed:.
ppl get over it, the man is trying to make ur life simpler, so if u don't like some stuff about the app then tell him your opinions in a decent way so he can make a proper development for the app instead of trashing it, otherwise f*** off
I like this!
1. I only see it from the right edge in portrait.
2. Might have a user selected area(s) for its swipe. This would allow those with conflicts to fix them. There is a similar app on Play which just gives a row running/recent apps icons which is not a bad interface. I found its use of the bottom obtrusive.
3. The home key does not go home in the base browser (I am using Trebuchet on a CM10).
4. There is a difference between "running" and "recent" (exited, cached, and still available.) !!
Long press of home gives a vertically tiled thumbnail view of both.
Taskarou shows only icons of running apps, not recent.
Taskarou should show both, either in two panes or in one with some distinction?, i.e. frame around one or the other. I sort of like having the thumbnails and they could be tiled or cascaded. If cascaded, should be focus-able, if tiled, scroll larger view like the app list. Best eliminated the number of apps option or make that for the pane (but that would be scroll-able for more). Cascading the main webOS motif. Flick down to kill?

First of all, as far as I can see, no one is trashing his app. So maybe lower your tone a bit and at least pretend to be able to communicate in a proper way.instead of telling people to "F-off".
The developer probably appreciates the feedback as he responds to it. Feedback (be it positive or negative) is valuable for both him and the app he works on. The end product can benefit from any kind of feedback as it points out flaws and strong points, and it can give the developer some different perspectives and experiences from different users and from different devices.
The day a developer stops listening to his/her targeted market is the day the product will begin its downfall.

Was having issues on my Nexus 7 running SmoothRom 4.1.2. Updated to 4.2 and no more disappearing quick controls as soon as my finger leaves the border. To get them to stay I had to leave my finger there for at least 1.5 seconds. Now all is well. Really liking it. I look forward to extended and customizable menus
Update:
Scratch that. Conflict was gesture control. Had it set to consume events in starting zone. So a touch on the edge first went to gesture control. Just an iD10t error.

i REALLY like this, i think it just needs a few little tweaks and it will potentially forever be my first loaded app after a flash
I find the trigger point for swiping sometimes covering buttons a bit ang gets activated without fully intending. What about maybe making it activate on a triple click, or maybe a double click, with the slide on the second click? Dont know how well they would work, but just some thoughts i had to try to solve that issue.
Ahhh whilst just reloading it i noticed the home double click option, i'll give that a whirl
The other thing is that i woiuld like to be able to make the scrolling bars maybe be a little less themed. I've been checking out some similar programs and i just find the scrolling to not quite be as good on this. I'm thinking if the bars were simplified a bit, it could perhaps help that? or maybe it might be drawing them as an overlay, rather than actually using a full side of the screen for example. I do a lot of coding, but havent done any on android, so i've got some ideas, but just not sure if they would necessarily make much of a difference or not.
I'm just about to reload it now, but i'm just trying to remember if there is any sort of option to add shortcuts/actions etc to tabs, rather than just apps, something else to consider perhaps.
there are people complaining in the play store about it being a home launcher, i dont quite get what they mean, (yes it has the default action for launcher applied), but the way it uses it's backup launcher it really does seem to work "in addition" to the backup launcher. I'm thinking they are talking about screen redraws, but i couldnt get any to happen (maybe needs to be running a while longer)
Anyway overall i LOVE your work, but (and obviously it's the message from the play store comments) i'd love to see it be cut back more if possible, to try to avoid any noticeable impact to the system, and for the people on play (who arent really clarifying what they want i dont think) maybe trying to tweak it's interaction with the fallback launcher (i'm not sure exactly what their issue is as i said, i'm taking a bit of a stab)
:good:
reinstalled it just then and disabled the trigger, and set activation to double click home :good::highfive:
disabled themes as much as i could, i'll give it a spin like this and see how it goes.

[Utility] Taskbar autohide utility

Hello
One thing make me crazy using surface. In landscape mode, I have taskbar on the left side. It give me easy access to program with thumb and it don’t use much space... but when I switch surface to portrait mode for reading or note taking, it take too much space on the left....
So here comes my solution small program that can change taskbar auto hide property based on screen rotation.
You can change if taskbar auto hide or don’t in landscape or portrait mode , and you can mark this program to start automatic on startup
Feel free to use it and share it please leave comment of what you thing about this utility and what more you want
Cool! Doesn't work on the RT though, even thoughit looks like it should (.NET, AnyCPU target). I may hook it up to a debugger for some investigation. Thank you for including the source!
I love this utility! I've actually been unsuccessfully looking for something to do exactly this for a few weeks, and I stumbled on this when I wasn't looking for it.
There's one minor issue I seem to be having with it. If I restart my computer, wait for all the programs to load up (including yours, which is set to run at startup), the program is running, but doesn't have any effect on the status of the taskbar -- the taskbar simply maintains the last state it was in before I restarted the computer: autohide or not -- it doesn't change with orientation. If I exit the program and restart it, it performs as it's supposed to.
In short whenever I restart my Surface Pro (and sometimes when waking from sleep) I have to restart the program to get it to continue working properly.
Great utility by the way!
EDIT: It doesn't fail to respond every time I start and shut down, but it seems to happen whenever I restart with the Surface Pro still in portrait mode. I just tried it with it in landscape mode and it worked fine.
Hello
Many thansk for using this utility, I
nearly forgot that i post it public. I know about this issiu and after finals i have plans to fix this but unfortunetly some problem with position senzor shows up on my surface pro ( like in this blog surfacetablethelp.com/2013/06/surface-pro-simple-device-orientation-sensor-not-working-or-disconnected.html#comment-16957 but whit no android thing )
So soon as i fix this and have woring chang. oriantation i will wok on this utility
Are you still working on it?
A nice feature would be to have the bar always on the same (physical) side of the screen.
For example to save space: Having it on the left side in portrait and as soon as the orientation changes it will now be on the bottom.

There are at least two people looking for solutions (as was I) and I stumbled upon the answer looking for something else. The program they are looking for sounds like Taskbar shuffler in the tabletpcreview forum. I cant post it to make these people super happy, as I don't have 10 posts. Your assistance would be greatly appreciated, and I would be super happy.

The links don't work. Does the one to tabletpcreview have a way to move the taskbar when the screen rotates?

Again thanks for using this utility. Orientation sensor on surface suddenly start working after ages of malfunctions so i was able to fix some bugs and add one new feature
So let me introduce v2:
-fixed bug when auto hide wasn't initialize after reboot.
-added feature to move task bar based of screen orientation.
Since changing task bar orientation isn't possible via API since windows vista, i am using some way of "bay pas". Program start task bar property windows. Switch focus on it and emulate keystrokes ( tabs for moving between options, arrows for switching orientation, enter for submit changes ) ... and i cant bele it .. it work :fingers-crossed:
So fell free to test it and post any comment and feedback
Dude, that's awesome. I haven't tested it extensively, but from brief usage, it puts the taskbar at the bottom on portrait and on the left in landscape. Exactly what I want. Thanks!
It still working in win10.. Thanks,
