Filesystem in MicroSD:
Fat or Fat32?
Which is more fast?
which is "faster" . . .
FAT32 I supose . . .
totally depends on the card and size. A quick search of google will show various reports and none say which is fastest. On some cards FAT32 is faster, on others its FAT16. Some work better with different cluster sizes also.
The only way to know is to benchmark your actual card in your actual device. I use Pocket Mechanic to do this and decide on the best format and cluster size. For my Sandisk UltraII it was FAT32 with the largest cluster size it would accept. With my old Viking 1gb card it was Fat16
With a FAT 32 format I get stuttering and interuptions when listening to music which is located on the SD Card. I don't seem to get it with FAT16.
My card is a Sandisk Ultra II 2GB. I am running the B&B 3.5 ROM and latest radio.
My MicroSD is Transcend (the best) 1GB with Fat32

Some info:
SD vs. SDHC
The original SD card format is limited to 2 GB of storage. That's why the SD Card Association developed the SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) format, which has the potential for much higher capacities.
Although standard SD and SDHC cards look identical in size and shape, only SDHC-compatible products will be able to accept cards using the new format. This is because the original SD format uses a "Byte Addressing" scheme, while the new format adopts a "Sector Addressing" scheme.
my question:
Is universal compatible withc sdhc ?
What size supports, witch cards are working ?
more info
The fates of Secure Digital (SD) memory cards and handhelds have been linked for years.
Obviously, there is no way to put a floppy drive or CD drive in a handheld, so companies were forced to turn to smaller formats.
SD cards were an obvious solution. They are about the size of a postage stamp, while still capable of storing megabytes of data.
Over the years, these cards have steadily increased in capacity while at the same time dropping in price.
With a bit of research, it's now possible to pick up a 2 GB card for less than a 16 MB one used to sell for.
But recently the SD format has run into a bit of a snag. This has forced a change that might -- or might not -- be significant. It all depends on the device you are using.
FAT16 vs. FAT32
The original SD cards use a format called FAT16. This is a system that is only capable of dealing with 2 GB of data.
Clearly, this was workable several years ago, when an SD card physically capable of storing that much data was barely on the horizon. But it is now outdated.
That's why the SD Card Association (SDA) has put together the specifications for a new, high-capacity SD memory card.
This is called the SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) format, and uses the FAT32 format. In its present incarnation, SDHC has a maximum capacity of 32 GB.
Aside from formatting, there are no hardware differences between SD and SDHC cards.
Past vs. Future
As many people are aware, there are already SD cards on the market that exceed the 2 GB limit, and these people are almost certainly wondering about the need for the new SDHC format.
These people should know that these cards are formatted with FAT32, not FAT16, which means that they aren't true SD cards.
In many cases, this doesn't matter, as some companies have started adding FAT32 support to their products with SD slots. But not all of them.
This is why the SDA felt the need to come up with a new name for this new format. It is supposed to ensure than anyone who buys an SD card can be confident it will work in their SD-enabled device.
Other New SDHC Features
SDHC cards are also broken up into classes based on their minimum sustained data transfer speed.
A Class 2 card can handle 2 MB/sec., a Class 4 card can handle 4 MB/sec., a Class 6 card can handle 6 MB/sec, and so on.
This allows consumers to be sure they are buying cards that meet their needs.
Other Sub-Specifications
The new SDHC specification also offers three other SD sub-specifications: SD-Audio, SD-Video, and SD-Binding.
All of these include Digital Rights Management (DRM) functions, allowing them to carry various types of files with DRM protection.
For example, SD-Binding allows wireless carriers to bind files that have been downloaded to a specific phone, and prevent unauthorized copying to other devices or computers.

well if the only difference is fat16/fat32 they should work as Universals support fat32 (my 2gb card is formatted fat32)

So does the htc universal support 8 GB SD card? Or will it be possible through firmware upgrade? What is the largest sd card I can plug into my htc universal (helmi aku 3.5)? And wich brand should i buy?
4GB SD Cards
Hi,
just for information, I'm running a 4GB SD 150x card which my Universal recognises, shows correctly in the 'storage card' tab of the memory app. I use it for music and mapping and have no issues, yet!

i formatted in fat 32.

wisbar advance 2.0
Format with FAT16
If FAT is the only problem here, still there's a solution
1- Plug your SD into a card reader (or you can use wm_Storage or USB-HDD applications)
2- Go to PC --> Device Manager --> Disk Management, select your SD and try to re-partition it to 2GB based partitions with FAT16 as file system.
3- return it back to your device and report the result.
-----------------------------
I didn't try it, but I think it will work.

It's good to ear this!
Just to clarify: You are using it in a Universal with witch ROM? Helmi aku 3.5?
Good to see Portuguese around here!
What the title says basically. I'm looking to replace the 4gb class 2 sdhc card that came with the phone and get a bigger and faster one.
Depending on what the maximum size for an EXT partition is (I've read 1gb, other places said 2gb) I will chose between an 8gb and a 16gb one.
Coupled with that I have another question. I read that DATA2SD ROMs are generally slower that A2SD+ ones. If you were to compare an A2SD+ ROM using a class 2 sdhc card to a DATA2SD ROM using a class 6 card, which would you say is the fatest, most responsive?
Cheers.

Usually, size should be 2gb at max, 1gb is the general.
2GB is the limit for any rom before it starts to get a little unstable. 1GB is what everyone mainly uses but I have seen people with 1.5GB
IIRC by the guide I followed when I partitioned my card a long ago, it was recommended to have an ext of up to 1,4Gb.
1GB is ideal for the SD EXT
I have used 1gb also. (EXT4 partition)
I got a Samsung 32 GB Class 10 microsd card today and formatted the it into NTFS in Windows 7, and copied a big file, the speed met the nominal value about 13 MB/s. But I found out later that android does not recognize NTFS format. Therefore I reformatted the card into FAT32 in Galaxy S2. But when I copied the same file into the card under Windows 7, the writing speed decreases to about 5 MB/s. Later I used the app called "SD Card Speed Tester" to test the speed, it told me the card is a Class 6 card!!!
Is there anyone having the same problem? The only solution I can come up with is to format the sd card into ext2 and try again. Can anyone tell me how to do it with the phone, is there an app for that?
Thank you in advance!
I'm sorry to be the one telling you this but you might gotten a fake one...Where did you buy your sd card?
I bought it from a German company. Nevertheless, I just test the card (still with FAT32) with the original SD adapter under Windows 7, the writing speed is about 10MB/s, which is more close to the nominal value. So I think it is the problem between GS2 and the card.
Any idea to format the card with ex2 by GS2?

You should see better performance with NTFS, that is normal. Still, your speeds are unusually low.

Finally, I test the card with adapter under Windows 7 on my laptop using h2testw for NTFS and FAT32 format, both of them have the same performance, about 10 MB/s for writing. And I also inserted the card with FAT32 format in milestone, the writing speed is still about 5 MB/s, I did not test with NTFS format.
The card costs me 30 euro, and it functions normally with adapter, so I don't bother to return it. However, I am warning you guys, do not buy SAMSUNG 32 GB Class10 sd card, it can only achieve around 5 MB/s with FAT32 format.
Derp.
If you can fill the card it's not a fake, the only problem here is your expectations from the i9100's sd card reader.
I was wondering what the max size Micro SD card for the external slot could be used on this phone for music, videos, picture, maybe eventually moving apps to?
Thank you,
Whiteice
128 micro sdxc is the max i think it says on the box. (trashed mine) currently ruinning a 32 micro in my S3 no problems what so ever
The Samsung web site lists 64GB as the max size, but that may just be because that's the largest card currently available. The sdXC spec allows for up to 2 TB cards,.
I have a 64GB GB Sandisk card that works fine.
64GB is the biggest that will work on this phone. Some of the 64GB cards won't be recognized, and will need to be format to FAT32. My SanDisk Ultra 64gb Class 10 Micro Sd card had to be formated to FAT32 so I could use it in my S3 even though it said it was made for Android.

yeah i agree as well, the galaxy s3 doesnt have a limit of ext storage to support once it was upgraded to support SdXC, other then the Sd support max limit which is 2T of space for a SDXC memory card. Ull just have to format the XC memory card to extfat or Fat32 both beeing close to the same and supportive specially if ure rooted with CWM and want to nandroid.
had to do the same with my new MicroSdXC 64 Mobile Ultra Class 10 which also said it was made for android devices. using my OTG usb mass storage it shows me having 2-2Ts separate connected together. dont ask i watch alot of movies
so you have to format 64gb sdxc card to fat32 to work on sgsiii, if you are rooted......correct?

My card came formatted exFAT and I did not reformat it before using it in my phone. The only gotcha with exFAT is that the recoveries can not recognize exFAT. I also had to download an update from Microsoft to get my Win XP machine to be able to use the exFAT partition. If that is an issue you can use SD Formatter to reformat the card to FAT32.
Just what I was looking for!!!

As far as I know there is NO 512gb micro sd card available for purchase.... I would believe it to be fake...
It's in this line here - "with the way the card is made and formatted it may hold varying storage from card to card. Errors may be experienced once the maximum capacity of the memory card has been reached."
In other words, if you can't hold more than 2 gb on it that's your problem and we hold no responsibility... Jerks out looking for suckers...
n this is why i ask questions before i do anything lol. so then is 128 the current size thats legit then? and which brand is more sturdy aka less likely to corrupt/fail
ASUS Zenfone 2 supports up to 128GB but only FAT32 format.
Sincerely
ASUS_USA
@Asus_USA are sd's pre setup with fat32? or would i have to put it in an adapter n reformat to fat32
does it have to b sdxc? or can it be a regular sd
previous question: safest brand to go with?
If SD card cant be detected then you may need to use an adapter to format to FAT32
Zenfone 2 supports microSD, microSDHC, and microSDXC, with speed class up to Class 10
Unfortunately we dont have a specific brand to recommend
Sincerely,

exfat supported... I never change the format.
Fat32 has 4gb file restrictions, I have 8gb+ files there...
NTFS NOT natively supported.
Recovery however needs 32gb or less or Fat32 formatted card to install updates if you download the OTA from here.

Hi, you can purchase 512gb micro sd cards inexpensively around $20 ea. from OUS sites legally and with assurances. I used aliexpress. I put one in my samsung avant 4 4 2 from tmobile, and it seems work. I also put in my older samsung, ExhibitII, also tmobile, with gingerbread but it seems that version cant handle the memory volume. I guess size does matter.
