MDA PRO (NL) ROM upgrade + radio 1.04.02 upgrade!! (guide)

Hi guys!
First of all my very atmost gratitude to all people bringing the right knowledge to this forum! It has given me a lot of ways to tweak and upgrade my MDA Pro (Universal). Thanks again. I upgraded my MDA pro in 30 minutes to the latest iMATE WWE + radio 1.04.02!!
Main benefits for me: built-in SKYPE (that works), Built-in Pocket MSN and NOT built-in, but working now: MS voice command (v1.5)
Since it took me a while collecting all relevant info for upgrading and tweaking my MDA pro, i wanted to share my experiences with you and let you know how i finally managed everything. Also because some posts contain outdated info about the upgrade process. So here we go:
UPDATE MDA PRO (NL) -> iMate Jasjar WWE + radio 1.04.02
----------------------------------------------------------------------
First of all get the right files from:
ftp://xdaupload:[email protected]/Universal
Get the files:
* JASJAR_WWE_11353_137_10301.exe
(from /Universal/Shipped%20ROM/JASJAR_WWE_11353_137_10301/)
and the file:
* UNIVERSAL - JASJAR - Radio Version 1.04.02.rar
(from /Universal/)
- Unpack both files into a separate directory (use WINrar for both)
- Unplug universal (MDA pro) from USB
- In activesync, under connection settings, disable USB en COM connections
- Put MDA pro in bootloader by pressing LIGHT button + Power + RESET
(you can see USB vaguely on your screen, since you don't have backlight on)
- Connect MDA pro on USB; Windows will recognize new USB device
- Launch the file from the WWE update: MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe
- Preform the upgrade (this process takes about 15 to 20 minutes)
(I didnt get any country error here as some described earlier, it went smoothly)
- After it finishes, do not disconnect the MDA pro and DO NOT reset it. Immediately preform the next upgrade:
- Run MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe from the radio 1.04.02 directory
- This will take about 10-15 minutes
- After it finishes, disconnect from USB and give cold reset: POWER + reset
- You'll see the new iMATE splash screen, and then the Windows Mobile screen (first boot will take some time)
- Then the device will ask to first-setup and you're IN!
I did NOT have to install anything from the extended ROM, as others posted. The only thing i needed to do after upgrade was:
* Make new 'GPRS, 3G' connection for T-mobile, using the settings: APN: internet, user/pwd: tmobile
Then I deleted my old partnership on the ActiveSync, and activated USB and COM connections again, and synchronised my device! Et voila!!!
Then I installed my previous apps (see tip list on end of posting) and made the essential registry tweaks to my device, which can be found on:

Some other tips I'd like to share:
* install Microsoft Portrait v2.3 for audio/video conferencing!! On GPRS is works better then skype for me! Audio is perfect, video connection (even at lowest settings) scrambles the audio a bit!
* Magic Button is top app!
* VNCviewer does a sweet job on the VGA screen (terminal services works fine too, but doesn't go fullscreen)
* of course Tomtom 5.1 + checkpoint 5.02 and/or POIedit
* Resco File explorer + Registry editor (must have!)
* Upgrading to Skype 1.2 beta did not work for me, stick to the default one!

Having a diferent build (please see below), I'm very much interested to see your tips on the above, TomTom (normal installation doesn' go...!?!) and skype (pre-installed in my JASJAR, but I haven't been able to have it working at all...!?!)

Somebody has deleted all files in the upload section, now the most of the files are reposted again(thanx), i guess, their still are missing some shipped roms.
only rom their is for now; JASJAR_WWE_11353_137_10402.rar(if it is a full rom)
So think for now that you have to browse the ftp upload part.

Hi guys,
I just read that someone cleared out some files in the upload dir!
So, as we speak the uploading of the JASJAR rom update is in progress. Should be in shipped rom any moment now.
For further replying on your msgs;
- Haven't checked if the unit is simlock free now, but I think i won't be.. I'll keep you posted.
- I read somewhere that Skype needs a minimum of 18MB program memory to run correctly. Right now I managed to get 21MB free, and everything works smoothly.
- TomTom had to be installed with the 4 cabs files, since the original setup didn't work for me (crashed in installer)
And once more; I really love how MS portrait is working for audio/video conferencing. Especially since of 15-11-2005 I'm using UMTS (!) on T-Mobile NL

thanks guido.... how are you using umts on t-mobile ???

Is it possible to put back the original mda pro rom if something goes wrong... like a registry edit.... I don't really know how everything works and I don't want to destroy my new toy !!!

Once you upgrade you go beyond the ** Point of no-return **
But sometimes you gotta take some risks in life to advance
Actually again I took the risk yesterday of trying out the XDA Exec ROM upgrade. And I must say; this one works pretty fine for me too. And right now I gained 22,35MB free RAM memeory, so I managed to get Skype 1.2 beta running!
Furthermore I'm test using the UMTS network of T-Mobile NL. I already clocked speeds up to 320 Kbps in the downstream; pretty neat Skype and Portrait work excellent on these new speeds.
And I've tested if the upgrade unlocked the device; but.... as I've expected: no....
For now I would suggest going for the O2 Exec upgrade, also since it has the 1.04.02 radio builtin. Things I like more about this upgrade:
- More FREE program memory (allowing skype 1.2 to run for example)
- Nicer SPLASH screen
- Seems to operate a bit faster
Once you installed the Exec ROM you can choose 'Install Type' under programs; this is where you select the Corporate Mode, and then give in the code 0506. (This wasn't really described clearly for me in the other posts). Then reset. Furthermore I deleted all other O2 stuff on the device (don't forget the shortcuts under Windows\StartUp). Actually I only left sddaemon in the startup group, giving me max of working RAM.
Thus, now running:

Reply / Exec ROM update
Hi,
I just took the risk to advance, however when upgrading to the XDA Exec ROM I got the message that (after doing the hardware inspectation):
ERROR 120: Country ID Error
The ROM image that you are trying to use is not designed to work on your device.....
I have an MDA Pro.
Anyone have useful ideas?

I read this before in other posts. It seems that when you launch the updater the 2nd time, it doesn't produce the country error anymore
Hope this will be the same in your case!
And another important thing mentioned before; I used MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe (from the Jasjar file or Radio 1.04.02 file) to preform the upgrade. Just copy this file in the Exec directory and launch it; it will display another xda, but this is normal and will work fine for the universal

umts and simlock
Hi Guido,
thanks again for your cool posting every time! You keep us informed.
First off all pretty that the Simlock isn't removed after the update! I want to update too but first i want to remove my simlock. After that i will do an update and use my device just like i used mine Qtek 9090 before!
1 More question is about Tom Tom 5.1 when i try to install it i get an error is there an guide out there to install Tom Tom 5.1 on WM 5 ?

However I didn't had the time to do the XDA upgrade yet, but will do tonight.

Concerning UMTS; I'm test using it on T-Mobile NL. Officially it will be launched in 2006. I'll keep you informed about the progress.
Video Calling isn't yet supported on the MDA, but the data connection is! Topping at 340 Kbps, which is pretty fast for a mobile device

From today i noticed that I have an UMTS connection on my MDA PRO. I have flashed my MDA pro with anouther rom. UMTS is working fine. Making a videocall is not successfull. Do you have any tips to make it work or is it not supported by T-mobile

Qtek 9000 error and upgrade to imate latest firmware?

Have been reading through all of your responses. Very impressive.
Today i received my Qtek 9000.
It seems to be a wonderful phone and with the subscriptions vodafone has in sweden i get free calls and free downloads. Looked great.
Now to my problem.
I´ve put in all settings that vodafone provides for other ppc´s and it´s working on them.
It connects, dissapears, connects again.
And i get:
Cannot Connect:
Dialed: services.vodafone.net
Cannot connect for an unknown reason. To check your connection settings and change them if needed, tap Settings. If the problem continues, reset your mobile device according to your manufacturer´s documentation and try again.
I´ve downloaded these 2 files:

UNIVERSAL - JASJAR - Radio Version 1.04.02.rar
Will an upgrade remove my problem?
But my question is, i bought it at expansys, why buy qtek if i could have bought an iMate instead? I mean will i now rebrand it to be an imate?
Are there no software updates from qtek?
Since this one is brand new, should i return it and get an iMate instead?
I will also need to get the regfix for swedish keyboard, would be entirely greatful if it could be arranged.

New dutch t-mobile rom available

I noticed there is a update available for the MDA PRO on the dutch t-mobile site.
Has anybody tried it already?

The worst thing is that I attempted to upgrade my Dutch MDA PRO with I-mate rom yesterday and... now I have a brick. How UNOFORTUNATE, just couldn't wait 1 day!! Will go to a local T-Mobile shop today and try to play a fool (I don't really have to play, I am a fool!!!) and see what happens. Maybe they'll fix free of charge (I still have a warranty).

I have updated my phone from Qtek rom to this rom and it's working very nice. gonna test it this weekend, but all things are in this ROM.
1 thing i haven't seen in other roms is the softkey app. with this app you can select what the softkey must do (other then contacts and calender).

How about the battery icon on the top bar? Can we replace it with time?
Can someone please really confirm if it has A2DP and AKU2 working perfectly.

Man, just change the theme. What's the problem? The default Windows Mobile theme is included.

I know but the Phone dialer theme is a problem, because if you change it to default in the registry then you loose the video call functionality

It works on all the models of HTC Universal. The installation of the rom cancels all the previous programs installs to you.

It work fine on v1640. I try the i-mate rom too and i find in i-mate rom the option for bt mouse. In this rom i can't find.

If you wanna you can update
The steps you wrote are right: remove sim and sd, Hr (is always better), full battery charge, connect via usb, run upgrade, remove cable, Soft Reset and go!
Is similar of Ivan's rom beta 14, translated in Italian and optimized.
No important bugs.
Remember to apply the patch posted on first post too.

After upgrade use Hard reset
After installation you make a hard reset
If you have problems you can installed the previous rom

I not sure about that, but this rom it's for all Univeral device (like wrote in previus page).
Remaind: apply the fixup otherwise the wireless today skin doesn't work properly.

Hi,
i'm trying to update an italian qtek9000, but either the provided upgrade utility (wich is in french!?) gives me a "language error", and the same goes with the upgrade utility wich is in Ivan's packages.
Any hint?

ok, i managed to make it work and it looks brilliant.
The only (big) problem is that WiFi works very bad (or better, doesn't work at all).
it detects correctly the hot spots but doesn't allow you to correctly configure the connection:
for example, on my home wifi (wich is WEP, 64bit share key), when it detects it it asks me for the key. But it doesn't allow me to configure it as shared. Going in the connection/WiFi parameters it doesn't allow me to modify/configure it.
Also, if you go in the "Schede di Rete" (or the voice that substitutes it in AKU3.2), doing an "aggiungi nuova", in the next screen there isn't the "Add" or "Ok", only "Annulla" is there.

well actually the O2 roms works on imate aswell...but il gve you the right post for o2 carrier...

Jasjar best WM6 upgrade
HI guys,
I just bought a new JASJAR and would like to upgrade to WM6, plz suggest me best ROM upgrade, let me tell you that the reason i bought jasjar is bcoz i had a k-jam and i tried some ROM upgrades on it.. and screwed it totally.. so this time i need something best & reliable for my jasjar.. can somebody help me

Check out this link..its Wm6.0 released by Ivan and i have been using it for almost a month now and so far dont have problems with it except that it doesnt have the video call function and so do all of them...most of all the memory leak bug has been fixed in it and Free memory stays around 24mb which is good enough for me.

How to downgrade HTC Universal Rom WM6.x to HTC Universal Original WM 5 ROM

Hi. guys.
How Can I downgrade my O2 Exec from ROM 8.2 Tomal to its original ROM WM5 (O2 Exec)
Should I Use task 28 55a first?
And then use WM5 ROM 1.13 (O2 Exec) and then upgrade to WM 5 Rom 1.30 (O2 Exec), or just straight use WM 5 ROM 1.30 (O2)?
Is the SIM locked?
Could someone tell me step by step?

I downgrade from Tomal/Ranju v7.7 WM6.1 and Tomal/Ranju v8.2 WM6.1 to WM5 - O2 1.30. 162
1) Original O2 1.30.162 WM5 rom unpack in RAR.
ROM, radio and ExtRom (in Rar Folder "OutPutFile") files copy to Universal RUU - CID Checking bypass.

2) Give Uni to Bootloader mode - Active sync must be not active. Synchronizacion is not active.
(Bootloader mode - holding the BACKLIGHT_BUTTON and the POWER_BUTTON and then pressing the RESET button)
3) Plug Uni to PC and wait for Win detect Uni.
4) Run RomUpgradeUt.exe and flash O2 rom, radio, extrom
Its works.

As fas as I know, is exaclty the same process, just reflash as normal with the ROM desired

Microsoft ActiveSync + Outlook - synchronize with PC.
Synch. with WM6.1 (contact, mails, appoinment, calender, notes make copys to PC) after downgrade to WM5 synch. again (all this copy back from PC to Uni with WM5).
Its works. I flash more roms and ever become all from outlook back to Uni. It does not matter WM5,WM6 or WM6.1 for outlook.

Extended Rom
Hi, guys, finally I have successfully downgrade from WM 6.1 (Tomal 8.2) to WM 5 (ROM 1.30 O2 Exec).
I use RUU tools, and copy Radio ROM, Ext ROM RO, and CE ROM too it.
But something brother my mind:
1. why my Ext ROM version empty. (In Setting, Device Information). Is this normal?
2. And is this normal, in this ROM no O2 tools?

The Final Conclusion
Hi, guys.
After doing some flash from WM5 to WM6 and WM 6 to WM 5, etc,
I finally succeed again to flash my O2 Exec to its original ROM WM 5 (O2 ROM 1.30) and fully functional...
Mine Is :
O2 XDA Executive (HTC Universal)
G4 (bootloader 2.01)
64 MB RAM
Here's my conclusion:
I'll make it step by step : (Please Do It with Ur Own risk, it success to me, maybe not to the others...)
1. Run PPCPIMBacup.exe (ver2.5) to bacup Ur contact, appoinment, and tasks), save it to Ur SD Card.
2. Download RUU tools from forum.xda-developers.com. Search for it.
After that, extract it to a new folder, let's say "RUU_WM5"
3. Download O2 ROM 1.30 (.exe) from buzzdev.net. Search it under download section. U must register first to download. (It's free )
4. Run O2 ROM (.exe), but don't click next. (cause we're only want to take 3 files : nk.nbf, radio.nbf, and ms_.nbf only from temporary directory in "/Document and Settings/").
Open Windows Explorer, run search to find that 3 files. U just need search one of these files, if U found, than the others files are in the same directory that U found the one. After U found them, copy 3 files to "RUU_WM5" folder.
5. Download Mtty program, too from buzzdev.net
6. Use Mtty (Mine is ver 1.4x) from buzzdev.net :
- Disable active sync
- Make Ur Universal in bootloader mode
- connect Ur Universal to USB
- run mtty, choose USB
- type : task 28 55a
- enter, and than U'll see USB)
- Unplug Ur Universal and do soft reset
(U'll see nothing in the screen, don't
panic.) after that push the combination
button to enter bootloader mode again.
- Plug again Ur Universal to USB
Very Important Note :
a. Use Mtty is very risky, please do it with
very carefully and prepare for the worst
risk... brick the Universal...
Do it with Ur own risk..
Ur bootloader I think must 2.01 or 1.1 (I
think...)
b. task 28 55a is to clear the storage of
Universal to its original state, like U want to
format the new Hard Disk to make clean
Install of new Windows
7. Run Rom Upgrade Utility (.exe) from "RUU_WM5" Folder. And Wait until it finished, about +- 20 minutes, and do hard rest, press 0.
8. Hoopla, The ROM WM 5 is running for the first time, wait until it insatll all the 3rd components from O2... it restart again for one more time, and then finished. U must setting time and other information to suit the present day and Ur will.
9. Run PPCPIMBackup.exe (ver 2.5) to restore all Contacts, Appoinments, and tasks)
10. Done at last Ur Radio, Ce ROM, and Ext ROM doing just fine.
Note: For addition to me, I install psidoc_sdhc.cab (to read SDHC Card), the allblack theme, today agenda, wkTask, TCPMP, and Opera 9.5 VGA for the additional program WM5.
Please that senior of this forum can make input or add to these step or method...

I'm lucky, when Upgrade or Downgrade main ROM(nk.nbf) or Radio (radio.nbf) , I don't have a problem.
But the problem where flashing extended ROM. Extended ROM can't Flash. Must be Error to flash extended ROM. I have many type ROM, and no one extROM can't be flash.
What should I do to re-format partition
