The sticky at the top says "Artemis goes Wiki" ?
Whats that all aboot ?
WiKi is like an online encyclopedia that is written, updated and maintained by its readers. So some would question the authenticity and credibility about most versions of it cough:wikipedia.com:cough - but the wiki link on this site opens up a simplified version of the same information you could find in the hoards of post on this board. Click the link on the toolbar just above this post...its presence and layout will become its definition for you.

The link isn't for the wikipedia, rather the full explaination of the word 'wiki' on wikipedia (e.g. like looking at the dictionary, the meaning of 'book').
Anyway, the 'wiki' referred here is somewhat like the wikipedia of xda-dev

OK, understand (finally)
Wiki, not just short for Wikipedia but a term used to describe multiple editing of web sites or something along those lines.
In short perhaps I just have just googled it myself (red face)
Apologies.
don't worry, there are no stupid questions....

Why has Forum [PDA] such a url:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php
archive because it is read-only? Is there a plan to make it possible to post etc. using the PDA version like this?
BTW: have searched with text "PDA" and found 0 entries.
Well, no, the whole purpose of the archive is that, er, its an archive. A backup of what has been said.
Or is it that what you are after is a low tech posting area on the forum ?
I think what he's asking for is a good template for browsing the forum with PDA screen, and with the ability to post also from PDA. The pocketnavigation.de site that hfrmobile linked is a good example of how it should look like.
This is something we discussed in the moderators forum after the migration from phpbb to vbulletin, but nobody has done anything about it yet.
We're not good XHTML/CSS designers, but suggestions or templates for PDA browsing compatible with the current forum engine are always appreciated

Ahh, you have such a way with words. Yes, if I'd thought about it a bit more I could have worded it to as you said, but obviously without the knowledge you have of the systems here

I have to restrain myself from using foul language, but we do have a wiki and a search button. If you can't be bothered to do some effort for it, then don't expect to receive an answer. The word 'please' would already help. There are some threads (one is conviniently named: 'a thread fo all the cabs') with links to cabs. I suggest you go and check those, before demanding cabs

i personally spent ages looking for it on the forum as the search is a bit screwed on it...

Don't be a twat yourself. Even if you don't use search, there are lots of threads. Just read the titles. It shows of little respect for the people who cook Roms and collect these cabs to just barge in and demand some cabs here, or a fix there. This is not a store where you can order things. If people would just use their eyes and if then they can't find it, ask nicely, that would be a relief. You'll see that the search function works better also, 'cos then there are no completely useless threads anymore (like this one)

ah come on, you always going to get users like this. i'm not saying he is right, i'm just pointing out that if you don't have to say anything usefull (like our conversation here), why bother then?
and for the record, searching "tweaksUI" instead of "htcTweaksUI" gives bunch of threads with roms and not really the tool itself (ok, now there seem to be on on the second page, but still, ut gets frustrating )
I would like to suggest an improvement. (I assume the subject is manually edited, rather than scripted.)
I suggest that first and pure mentions of devices in news articles link to their wiki page - lots of times I read of New Miracle Device X123 and click, expecting to gain info on what the device is - phone/tablet, looks, true manufacturer, etc. Instead I get linked to the forum and the standard subs - developer, apps, questions, etc that all devices have on the forums and learn nothing except that lots of people posted about it. It seems like a perfect place to use the wiki for a quick overview and picture.
Then, when there is a reference to a detail about the device, a project, configuration setting or such - then link to the proper forum or a particular thread.
Assuming I'm fairly normal, I find I click those 1st links right often expecting general data about a new or unfamiliar device - and always get that first forum - that I could have guessed existed - making the first link (to the top forum) fairly useless, as the detail link will usually be listed below in the article to the thread about the particular topic for the device.
Hope I made sense, thanks for listening!
The problem with that is unfortunately our wiki is horrifically under utilised with most device pages containing little to no information.

My preferences change in wiki is not being saved even though it says it's saved.
Whom should i contact regarding wiki issues? Wiki admins?
--edit--
Looks like it's a known issue.
Bit of a bump...
It does seem that wiki is a great place for a first notice, and a first link.
While it's not really development, you have to know it exists, etc before you can develop!
Perhaps the first news team can be tasked with an initial entry form that becomes the first paragraph for wiki - manufacturer, release, expected OS, etc.
If news or development got to me I could rough out a form and start....
I have a post on this forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1714
It fell off the first page so, to find it, I entered my screen name into the 'search this forum' box. It returned nothing and brought me to an advance screen.
I then entered my user name into the search box on the advanced form labeled "SEARCH BY USER NAME".
Again, no results found.
Search isn't broken.Change the search term to something more general and try again...
POTATO!!!!
Right now, I keep seeing a cat reading a book when I try to search... :silly:

So when trying to find posts with my name in them, I should search for "General Synpax"? I was unaware of this promotion; I'm flattered.
The real problem is that the author field isn't included when the search is run, and it should be.
Really, why even bother having a site search functionality if it's going to be this bad. Just use Google.

You can search by author in Advanced Search.

This is by design - the vast majority of users want to search for keywords. If a user happens to share username with a keyword, they don't want to be inundated with their mindless musings in off topic...
If you want to find a post by a specific user, just hit the little cog for advanced search, where you can search based on username.
XDA has 4.6 million users, and 21 million posts, so search needs to be a little bit more specific to ensure that you can actually find things.
To find your own posts or threads, use the link to your own profile There's a button there to show all your posts and/or threads.

Thanks for your answer.
As a web developer myself, we recently had this same issue come up. We shifted all the search to Bing. This both got us better results and eliminated one target for a DDoS attack.
I tried searching earlier today for: Zenithink (the brand name of my tablet), and didn't get any hits. At the time of this post there did seem to be a problem with the search, but it seems to be working now.
k.
Also, keep in mind that search results can be delayed up to 10 minutes:

Everyday, I used to make it a point to log on to xda and read the portal post, which explains new ideas, announcements, new apps, new features, reviews etc. The post explaned everything and that was an excellent source of knowledge, probably around two articles a day. But since the past 2 days, I am seeing like hourly articles, which takes me to a different website. No article, Only link. No explanation, why I should use the app, etc. I feel angry now, as xda was my only tech read.
Would you please link me to a news posting that fits your description? I have not seen any like you have described in all my time here on XDA.

Got it. Thanks!
What about RSS?
I have the same problem, too many news. I don't need apk/theme "news" for example, I just like XDA News http://www.xda-developers.com/articles/
How can I do that? Thanks
6+ theme posts a day is ludicrous. Posts should probably be categorized and filterable. How do I weed the crap out of my RSS feed? It looks like I can subscribe to a combined feed with everything in it, a Comments feed, and an External Links feed, none of which are particularly useful since this update.
I miss being able to open the portal post to see comments and read the whole post. Is there any way to that anymore? It just directs you to whatever is linked. All the posts are cut off as well. You can clearly see the author has written something, but you can't read it, and when you click it you just get another website. Look at the attached pics.

Mobile view seems to truncate the text. On a desktop browser, you can see the rest of the sentence.

The website you are being taken to is the article. This isn't an XDA article, it's just one we've linked to.
Thanks for the clearification. Is this also seen as mobile view? It's taken from a tablet with request desktop site on.

The website dynamically changes depending on device and screen size i think. So it's going to be slightly different again for tablets I think.
