Truly clean WM6 for Hermes? - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam ROM Development

I've seen all the different ROMs floating around, and very very cool. But, I'm wondering if there is one floating around for the Hermes that is pretty much bare bones? IE, just Office, and other stock Microsoft apps. No tweaking, no nothing. I know most of the WM6 ROMs floating around are pretty much like this, but I'm looking for one even less than that. Pretty much as pure vanilla as it can get.
No worries if not, just figured I'd throw it out there..
Thanks!

really depends on what you actually want the ROM to do... as the tweaks fix known problems... but the Vanilla ROM... in the above sticky is vanilla...

So is LVSW's one

I love the LVSW ROM, it's awesome. I needed to patch up a couple things, but thats the fun part of it, and it's expected with an unofficial ROM.

Hi,
I've just bought myself a Hermes to replace my Wizard and I've been keeping a close eye on the different WM6 roms available. I'm interested in the SIP calling via wifi function that WM6 offers but all the roms I've seen here uptill now seem to have been stripped of the function. Am I wrong in saying this ? Do any of the roms support SIP calling ?
Thanks

They all do but the function does not work at this time.

I would be more interested in trying for a really basic ROM if I thought it might give more access to more storage space on the device. But it doesn't appear that this is how it works. However, if that is your goal, there is a Black Edition ROM out there now that allows for more storage space (~57.4 total) instead of the normal ~47 or so...

I have a pretty bare bones WM6 rom if you would like to try it sk0t, it is designed specifically for Cingular/AT&T all settings and registry fixes are auto installed for it to work optimumly on Cingulars network. The auto installer does not install goodmail, expressmail, etc. Only the essentials.

the BLACK 1.2 rom is the cleanest of them all.
this can be argued because a screen capture utility and some very useful vj tools are installed, but other than that, a lot of redundant and old wm5 files that were left in there were cleaned up, hence ths smaller footprint.

Hi JasJamming
I have now installed your ROM, its very fast.. but in fact would prefer not to have the above utilities. I use a different screen capture, and do not require the VJ Tools at all. To make your ROM truly as clean as possible, please consider removing the screen capture utility and vj tools and allow us to choose to install via CAB files.
Your favorable reply to the above would be highly appreciated by your many fans around the world.
Thanks and Regards

Which ROM (already read about them yet questions linger)

So i have a att 8525 and for the past month or so been reading here and HOFO and 4winmobile and mrvanx about the rom updates. I feel confident in my ability to update but i am really unsure as what some main differences are between all of the many different versions. At first i was sure to go with Black but now after looking LVSW, Faria and ELF. I have read what they offer but i dont really get whats the big differences between them. I notice a big "selling" point is the amount of ram available for use. I DO want WM6, a few things that i need are good BT support, WIFI, 3G/data connection, my Exchange direct push to work, Remote Desktop and easy dialing (like the HTC smart dialer). So do any of these really meet my needs? i know thats a loaded question but i just cant seem to be able to differentiate between them. Thanks for any help that you can give.

*EDIT* I do want WM6.. it was a typo sorry for the confusion */EDIT*
My suggestion is to try them and stick with the one that most support your needs.

You say you don't want WM6, so then none of the mentioned ROMS will meet your needs as they are all WM6. This is the WM6 forum. Check here http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=306 for discussions about the latest WM5 ROMS.
You say you dont WM6....
but you want a good Remote Desktop client and Good bluetooth support....
both reside in WM6 and not in WM5
As i edited in my post i made a typo i do want WM6. Sorry for any confusion again.

I agree with arluckett2002, try some out.
I personally recommend the Elf, because he cooks with the ExtROM, leaving you the ability to remove unwanted apps and is built on LVSW core (very stable). It is sort of a combination between a clean fast & sleek rom, with the added benefits of some apps. But, you can remove them if you want.
Most of the rom's are good now, it is a matter of trial & error and style preference.
There is no way you get everything you want in a rom (unless you cook your own). Get the closes one (or a basic one and add the programs you need). In my experience with a Hermes phone, LVSW is the most stable. ELF which uses LVSW is almost as good as LVSW.
I update programs as they become available.

I always had this question... If a program is installed while the ROM is being upgraded (it is part of and packaged with the rom), and a new version of the application is available, can we upgrade the application without losing precious storage/program memory? Or will the upgrade disable the "read only" older version and install the new version as if it is a new application?
Good Question!!!

My understanding is that the new program will place new copies of it's files over the ones in ROM, thereby sort-of deactivating the ROM-based one, but now taking up twice the amount of space ... and if you uninstall it, you should be left with the old copy.
However, if the uninstall removes registry settings, the ROM-based one might not work anymore. I know I've "overwritten" certain files in the /Windows folder, and when I delete them, the old ROM-based ones are again visible.
Again, this is MY understanding, and I may be wrong. I would LOVE to know the truth from somebody who's a real genius with this stuff. We have soem true geniuses here, so maybe one of them can confirm or deny what I've written here.

So, based on your answer, the best rom currently available (at least in relation to memory) should be the Elf, since he installs all programs in ExtROM using CAB files, which can be uninstalled / overwritten etc, without taking up twice the amount of memory in case of a program update. Agree?

No, not neccesarily. There are several very clean ROMs to choose from, as well, where you can simply add what you want, period. And several only have some limited apps built in, that provide some extra functionality, and will probably not be upgraded, or you can live with the versions that are already installed. The question is best answered by each user and his/her subjective needs and desires.
On top of that, you must think about the quality of support that the cook is willing/able to provide. If you are a newbie, you would probably do best to steer away from the Elf and Black versions, since their authors are somewhat lacking in patience, although I must admit, they are extremely talented with the technology.
You really need to measure it all out from several different angles, and in the long run, only you can decide which is best for you.

VP3G v2 rom
I have been running VP3G's v2 hybrid rom for about a week. only issues i had after flashing was i needed the cingular settings cab file to configure everything that i didn't want to manually add myself. i'm still looking for the smart dialer cab that i found on here awhile back but other than that it's got everything you need, it's stable, and very fast. tomtom 6 works great with it as does any of my bluetooth devices. exchange direct push works well though i find that sometimes the phone doesn't sync cahnges back to the exchange server. so far it's the best rom i've tried for wm6. oh yah.. i'm running an ATT 8525 on ATT's network.
Damn talking about bring the thread back to life, haha. I am actually currently running VP3G v2.0.1H also. VP3G has the cingular settings build in, did that not work for you? it worked great for me. It works perfect for all my BT devices and i have no had any issues with the exchange DP. so definitely my favorite rom so far.

dcd's vogue rom 0.2.0

Here is my vogue rom version 0.2.0
What I have done so far (as compared to a Sprint 1.12 ship rom):
Upgrade drivers and XIP to 1.17 ship rom
Upgrade base to CE OS 5.2.1933 Build 18533.0.7.0 (in progress)
Upgrade OEM applications to newer versions from 1.17 ship rom
Remove IA Zip (Office Mobile 6.1 supports Zip)
Remove WModem (Internet Sharing is included)
Remove Sim Toolkit
Remove Autoupdate
Remove Catalog
Remove Customer Feedback, replace mxip_notify.vol with non-SQM version
Add Remote Desktop
Add VoIP
Registry - better performance, better battery life, etc
I have not tested this. I hear it works. If you mess up your phone, its not my fault.

man whats up I would love for you to keep working on this .....
I don't mean any offense or insult but honestly, I don't really see a point to it. The Touch has plenty of memory so there's no real point in swapping apps in rom as with lesser phones. It's not an issue. Now if you can enable GPS, increase speed 30%, fix DirectDraw so it plays better than 1 1/2 fps or something like that, I'd be flashing it right now instead of typing this. But I'm not resetting my phone and going through all that for a few apps I could install myself in 1/10th the time. There's another custom rom on ppcgeeks that's also received relatively little interest, I suspect for the same reason.
Again, nothing personal, no insult is intended and remember, you asked.

Yeah I take no offense. That seems to be the general feeling of vogue users. However, I am not just adding apps, in fact I havent added any (other than WM6 components.) I never do in my titan roms. What you have to consider is that WM6 is bloated with crap, and then HTC dumps more crap on top of it. Yeah, the vogue comes with all the software that 99% of people are throwing on top of their device's build for a custom rom... I am not one of those people I am more interested in updating the vanilla OS in terms of performance, stability, and age.

Hey dcd. I love your work and have followed it closely on the mogul. I'm now using the Vogue and I figured it would be a matter of time before you helped out this area. I'm definitely in your corner so keep the roms coming. FYI... Alltel has released their touch which also has some goodies and may be worth looking into as soon as an Alltel user can dump the rom for us.

He asked a question, I gave an answer based on my usage and the obvious lack of interest in the two custom roms on ppcgeeks. Why waste time building systems a half dozen people might use when there are other phones in much more obvious need of work? Being a prick doesn't make it less true.

I have been running the ROM for only one day, but I wanted to report some early things that I have noticed...
1) I am having the problem with the phone app openning after closing certain programs... Seems to pop up when using PHM regedit, settings, file explorer, SprintTV, and randomly with other apps
2) It appears that you have done some tweaks to the Touch keyboard, which is cool in my opinion, but there is a bug. In some web pages the Touch Keyboard will only give me the option to use the "123 page"...the keyboard simply will not change to the ABC or XT9 entry methods.
Overall functionally is very good, but these are two annoying issues that I have noticed thus far.
DCD do you know if there is a way to get the Keypad and keyboards ouf of the voge? I want to add them to my titan. I have a vogue and a titan. The ones posted on this site are the older keybaord files. the newer ones on teh vogue are a ton better and cleaner also work better. let me know asap thanks

Suggested reg edit
From what I can tell most people think TouchFlo is not usable out of the box. I have a reg sitting that has made it much more usable for me although it still does not solve some of the short comings. At any rate, here is the reg edit I use....
HKLM\Software\OEM\TouchFloSettings\FingerPressure >>> Change D-Word to 9000.
This makes finger drag scrolling 100 times better. I wish you had a vogue so you can test it. It makes selecting text somewhat more difficult at first, but then becomes very easy once you adjust. It is really worth it to make scrolling more natural.

All these ROMS

All i need is a simple basic working rom and links to programs that i want.
I like some of the roms here but alot are over complicated with programs i would never need or want.
A basic WM6 with a tweak program and the , MSN, HTC and Office Patches all up to date wouild suffice. (oh and doesnt take up 80% of the storage card)
anyone point me in that direction please

dont run away so quickly, there are some decent roms in this forum, just have a look around, SCHAPS has some good one,s go for an earlier clean WM6 though one that's been hammered, and has some updates, for some reason he doesn't seem to want to provide updates to his latest Beta for 6.1.
There are a few other good full roms but its all about what you want to use the device for, I also just need a clean one not one that a chef has put all their fave apps in which bloats the build, I'm currently trying out the Shadow one which seams ok at the moment, main reason for that choice was that it states he has tweaked the bluetooth, what he's done I don't know..
and saying you've been searching since Friday... some of us have been searching for the wholy grail of ROMS for a while, I too am not a coder and don't want to brick my rom, no matter how good the destructions are, they invariably will be for the non uber geeks amongst us
Yes don't go to WM5. WM6 is much stable, dependable and you can find some good ROMs here. Though not officially launched, people here are cooking for WM6.1. It feels a bit strange to see you are going back to WM5.
Firstly decide the use of your Herms device.
Check out the applications the chefs are offering in their ROMs or you can use a clean ROM and instal cabs afterwards if you donot want to cook or expert in doing for yourself. It all depends on your personal preferences, but I feel you should not give preference to WM5 over WM6.

I like some of the roms here but alot are over complicated with programs i would never need or want.
A basic WM6 with a tweak program and the , MSN, HTC and Office Patches all up to date wouild suffice. (oh and doesnt take up 80% of the storage card)
anyone point me in that direction please

It doesn't have the 'latest and greatest', but hey, often the latest is not the greatest either...
Take a look at D-Lite and SuperD-Light.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=320010&highlight=superd-light
has anyone noticed how much slower wm6 runs on the 8525? I have two friends who purchased 8525's after I did, and theirs run much quicker with the old wm5 roms on them. Mine looks cooler, and has better functionality, but it seems to hang for extended amounts of time sometimes. Like when I'm replying to a text message, or just sliding the keyboard out, waiting for the screen to change into lanscape mode.
Windows 6.1 seems alot faster. you might try looking into one of the 6.1 lites. I'm useing pays with some luck

You may not quite get that combination but one of the numerous lite ROMs on the board may well suit.
Myself I'd recommend using Mattk_r's Pandora 6 (WM6.0, not WM6.1) and using the 3.60 Big Storage ROM. Very nice, stable combination. That way you can add in just a couple of things.
WM 6.0 Kitchen: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=316881
Or you could just use his 'Naked' ROM for 6.0 and add just a tweak prog from a cab.
WM 6.0 Naked ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=351274
I went up to the Pandora Naked 7 Kitchen and 'naked' ROM (still WM6.0) for a while then into the 6.1 'naked' ROM and kitchen with Pandora 8 & 9. Now I'm back with the 6.0 Kitchen and the 3.60 Big Storage ROM.

I ran Schaps 4.01 Full for a while without too many problems, I have just installed this one, as a base ROM, there are a few minor issues with the launcher app but I don't use it anyway http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=372118 seems reasonably fast can't comment on stability as I've only had it installed for an hour or so.
If you don't want all the tweaks and apps the ROM is offering just do a soft reset after you align the screen. Be sure to get a connection wizard then just pick and choose the apps you want. If you want a .CAB for something PM the person that has the ROM and ask for it.
I have been running the shaps 4.31 and although i like it its very very slow.
it keeps freezing and it takes ages to do anything.
I know no one believes me when i say i had less problems with WM5 but its that bad im seriously considering it.
I still have no way of putting the pays rom on as the loader always crashes.
Anyone else got a 6.1 rom that they recomend i can try.
try vp3g's it's very stable and not too many extras

Why does noone make unmodified roms anymore ?

I have been searching for an unmodified wm 6.1 rom w/o success... why is it that none of the cooks make clean, unmodified roms w/o custom folder icons/ status icons.
It would be the greatest thing to find a wm 6.1 rom for the hermes, that is as close to an htc release as possible, but with fixes to accomodate/increase speed.

I'd be willing to do that. I mentioned in my release yesterday that if anybody wanted another version (HTC Home, Lite, Ultra Lite), I would cook accordingly.
chop chop. How long does it take?! GOSH. Ok but seriously... id like two things in life right now... a sparkley clean rom with the newest version of wm6.1 ( dreaming about 6.5) and for someone to point me to the newest cab installer of manila... ill trade a night with my wife for these two things.

To be honest with you, no one had shown any interest. I cooked a ROM based on the original wm6 for HTC. I took all of the base apps, extended ROM, updated it to 21109 (SYS & XIP), and flashed it. Works good, but it's still stock. To me, they are boring. I just thought it'd be fun to try.
boring works, i'm so over m2d if it doesn't work in landscape its pointless, it takes away from the fit & finish of the device and makes it feel hacked together.
whereas the custom folder icons have significance to the cook, it has no significance to someone else. I'm not saying that the cooks can't show their creativity, but some of us like vanilla just fine, and in more recent times, those users seem to have been forgotten.
I like the option of being able to customize the rom after the fact to my needs or tastes, but i'm not technically saavy enough to make a rom myself...i'd tried w/ earlier wm6 builds and that went ok...but my wm 6.1 attempts have failed miserably.
ok so i guess ill just ask for it. I would like to have a " vanilla " wm 6.1 rom with whatever the newest base os is... and the newest version of manila 2d... I can customize from that point etc... on that note does anyone know how to modify the links shown below the browser icon in the browser tab? I would like to make ones for wikipedia etc... and has anyone looked at breaking the map search tab down and using it to make searches for other things like google? or wikipedia? etc? if you notice... most of theinfo in the internet tab and others... scrolls up and down just brilliantly... would be awesome to make a tab that has a a webpage in it or something... like www.google.com/ig/i something like that would be perfect. so back to what i would like... just plain jain bluewm6.1 .. same blue as the att rom... and then the standard blue manilla on top of it... and... as to half nights with the wife... sounds fine to me... but what if i told you she looked like al goreand bill cosby's love child??
there are no problems with a stock rom but it is nicer if we can have an additional spice

I would like to agree with this thread. I am also in favour of unmodified interfaces. All respect to the coders and developers modify and push the envelope with the ROMs but these guys are not designers so the interfaces often look really dodgy when compared with the original manufacturer ROMs...

I'll be releasing one in the next few days in my RevROM thread.
I would also love to see a performance ROM with manufacturer interface design. Manilla 2D is awesome! All respect to the coders and developers, but you guys aren't designers, and this is something that is generally lacking in the modified ROMS.

Lol, you basically repeated the same thing twice with different workds I wont be putting M2D in the next version because i already have a "non-colored" icons M2D version (latest v5). It'll be a lite version with possibly HTC Home on it.

If i could only make sense of the kitchens. Someone needs to really clean up the kitchen instructions and or make a kitchen more akin to ppckitchen
I tried following Ivan's Cooking Class, and just ended up with an unholy mess that wouldn't boot.
Ok can anyone mention what comes in Stock ROM WM6.1
I want it too!
I will join DRTigerlilly´s request for a clean wm6.1 rom.
In fact what I really want is a clean one, and as close as possible to a stock rom, BUT IN SPANISH.

Which ROM is most like Josh's + CRC's rolled into one?

I've been flashing a fair few ROMs in the past week or so, and I've come to the realisation that I like two ROMs more than any others: Josh's M2DLite, and CRC's 13.4 release.
Frustratingly, there's just a couple of things wrong with each release that leave me stuck and unable to choose between them... I have a couple of recurring problems with Manila 2D (it sometimes crashes out when I try to load an email which is accessed through the Seven.com system, and I can't change the clock to be a digital clock instead of analogue hands). There's also some remaining small problems with memory usage, plus for some reason my install of M2DLite stopped allowing me to install new CABs ("installation unsuccessful").
By contrast, CRC's 13.4 release is almost perfect - the stock, basic WM Today screen, with a lovely plain black theme. It has Device Update and a load of nice extras. However, it doesn't ship with the option to install and run M2D (the more I used it, the more I slowly came to like it).
As a result, I feel like I'm 90% close to finding the perfect ROM. I hate all the ROMs with gaudy themes or colour presets, but frustratingly some of those ROMs look quite appealing, aside from those annoying customisations. I'm really at a loss as to which ROM is ideal for the person who prefers the minimalist, discreet look, but wants all the regular stuff like 3G dialer, HSDPA, Internet Sharing and MMS to work without a hitch.
What ROM have you guys settled on? Did you try loads, but then find one which you think is perfect (maybe after a little bit of customisation)? I'd love to hear your thoughts. WM6, WM6.1 and WM6.5 ROMs are all eligibile.
All of the reasons you stated, is exactly why I started cooking my own. I always found things I disliked about every rom I flashed.
utak3r released his darkvisions 4 kitchen, and it is a very nice base to build on for 6.1.
With your own rom, you can have your cake and eat it too, after a bit of trial and error.
That was something else I was contemplating... I have pretty much no idea where to start with cooking my own from a kitchen; you say utak3r's DV4 is a good base? I considered trying one of his ROMs but didn't like some of the modifications he'd done (naff-looking dialer, etc)
How long did it take until you got to where you wanted to be with your own custom ROM?
At first I felt like I was never going to get there! lol
I'm still playing with things and tweaking little things, I'm not the pro like the other guys here, so it takes me a bit longer. But I'll just to little changes and flash it to the phone, too many big changes at once makes it tough to troubleshoot a problem.
I'm back to tweaking and testing on utak3r's kitchen, I have a kitchen from josh all set up the way I want it, but, cooking is addictive.

That's what this kitchen is for You can select your own desired apps (and the dialer, too).
Ooo, interesting... So, what does one need to download and install (aside from the kitchen) to get set up and cook with one of your kitchens?
Nothing - it contains all you need Maybe .Net and some runtimes - but you could have it already...
Ah, I tried your kitchen - there's some nice stuff in there, but unfortunately no Connection Setup (had to configure manually but I knew the data connection settings anyway). I did notice that the Contacts softkey was labeled as Kontakty, even though I'd made sure NOT to select the PL language option...
Aside from that, it was a pretty nice way to quickly customise ROM options. What's the best way to cook in new CABs? I noticed a lot of stuff in the OEM folder, but as well as what looked like the installed contents of CABs I saw a lot of other custom configuration files...
Glad to see you got it up and running quickly!
Here is cab2oem and package creator all in one zip.
cab to oem is drag and drop, and package creator is easy enough to figure out!

true - although one have to keep in mind it doesn't work in some cases! It's a good starting point, but sometimes you have to manually create proper rgus and initflashfiles.

You are right! I am about to attempt to see if I can edit/create one of my own. I wan't to see if I can make it work before I start asking for help on it though.
I have one program that won't properly make an oem with either of those programs. It's close, but missing something.

Check the files installed (including all the links) and check carefully the registry. I strongly advice you to use CeRegEditor, the best PPC registry editor on PC that exists (Polish product ) - you can make an image of the reg before installing it and compare it after - that way you can have all the registry changes were made.
Hello I am Necrolytic, a grindcore musician and graphic artist from Northern CA. I have been lurking here for over 9 months and just registered a month or so ago.... post one ha.
I run Josh's V15 M2D after seriously smashing through every rom 6.1 or higher on the top 4 pages, if not for one reason... It came loaded with crap and it actually works. In my short but insightful adventures with WinMo Roms I have found that bloated Roms are usually unstable or sluggish on my Hermes...a complete fail.
I ripped quite a few ROMS apart, checking to see what actually made the roms different or "better" from one another. Learning through reverse engineering and tinkering.
Skinning a common build and auto installing your own bloated playlist of .cab files shouldn't be considered Rom Cooking... that is just how I feel. I mean at least do something creative with the htchome coding and/or exclusive features... something.

Hello, and welcome to the forum!
Not sure if your directing your comment toward the op, or someone else. But that's kinda the way the thread is going. Leading someone towards the path of cooking their own rom.
There will be more for him to do than load a playlist of cabs!
There are all those little settings you like to have. All the programs you want, cooked in, not installed via cab, they will be there no matter what. Any theme you want, and today plugins you want, and in any order you want on the today screen. You can add/remove anything you want.
That's what most of the custom roms on this site are, the rom that the cook runs on their own phone (for the most part). Some cooks are doing custom roms for the community, but I bet they run that rom, or their own cooked variant.
I'm also hoping this thread will inspire more flashers to become cooks, maybe even you!
I am by no means a pro in the kitchen, I don't want to make it sound like I am. But I am getting by, and I love the roms I have cooked. If you think testing all the roms on the site is addictive, just wait till you cook a few roms, and debug, change settings, and cook those settings back into your own rom! then you'll really be hooked. I have been tempted to pick up a second hermes just for cooking and testing! haha
