I've seen some cool gadgets like bags with build in solar panels to charge you phone with ie. this:
http://www.luggagepoint.com/lpProductDetail.asp?productId=12201
or
http://www.solartechnology.co.uk/products/Solar_chargers/freeloader.asp
These would be idea for me as from pretty much anywhere I could charge my xda exec and my O rokr glasses which would be nice, I was wondering if anybody on here had any experience with anything like this in the real world and would like to share their experience.
I'm considering getting the second product as it's only £30 and modifying my briefcase so it's like the first product only much cheaper, but I am concerned the panel is much bulkier and smaller.
Thanks everyone
yeah, im quite keen to find out a little more about these although i think i will go for something bigger that would let me run my ameo continiously during sunlight hours.
there is a 13w briefcase style fold out one that ive got my eye on.
anybody else had luck with solar?
i just bought it. 60 quid off ebay.

not exactly pocketable, but more being able to listen to online radio etc while in the park all day.

Freeloader
Hi there
I actually have a freeloader so I can tell you it's pretty small. It's only marginally bigger than my mobile (motorola) and I have been camping with it a few times and it took a bit of a beating (although USB connector got broken when I trod on it )
I got mine from www.wavemaker.co.uk which is a bit cheaper, and they do a bundle with 2 batteries so you can be charging one whilst using the other - I have used it for a load of stuff - mainly my phone and iPod though
I did a review of it on my site as well Whoopie review for freeloader
If this helps!
Iain
Hi
i bought a Juice bag about 6 months ago @ £150 so not cheap, it is such a cool gadget. I am currently living in the UK so not used it that much, but when there has been sun I have given it a go. It takes about 3 hours to charge a phone. I did get to use it while on holiday to charge my iPod while I was sitting by the pool.
I would highly recommend one to people.
Sean
Obviously there are different reasons to buy a solar charger, but in the case of saving electricity with the Freeloader one that only costs £30, how long is it going to take to recoupe the money?
A monthly electricity bill may only be £30, and charging a mobile must be a fractional proportion of that (0.1%?). I'm still tempted to get one though.

You should be able to count the £ £ for the electricity if you know how much it cost you per Watt hour (Wh) is electricity. Say, if your battery is 5 Volt (V) and it has 1000 mAh, the total power in your phone battery would be 5 x 1000mAh = 5000 mWh = 5Wh.
Anyway, I don't think it would be cost effective to get your £ 30 by charging the battery using the sun. If it were to be that significant, £ £ wise, there would have a lot of people charging their phones in their office
I think the major purpose of the charger is more to getting the power you want in places you can't possibly get a power socket. A cheaper alternatives is those wind-up dynamo thing that you can charge by winding/rotating the handle(?) that you can get from eBay. Consider a charger may take 1 hour to charge the battery.. probably it is not a good idea to have your phone fully charged using this good for emergency usage though.

Cost per kWh: £0.10 (roughly)
Universal battery: 3.7V, 1620mAh
Charging power: 3.7 * 1.620 = 5.994Wh
Cost per charge: 0.10/1000 * 5.994 = £0.0005994
Looks like it's not very cost effective!
No bothered about cost effectivness
The idea is to have power where ever i go for my glasses and phone - I'm still thinking about getting a juice bag because you have the panel on the outside of you bag so you don't need to set it up to charge anything.
also if you were wondering about how much energy you save most of the power goes on keeping your phone charger plugged in on standby, not charging it.

Let's kick that dead horse.....
My Pu16a battery dies at 39%. Tried the piece of tape thing, and the freezer thing (days apart) and it still cuts off at 39%.
So I fired up the 3200 mah extended battery that came with it (bought it from the marketplace here) and it won't charge above 40% most of the time. I can leave it plugged into my PC for 8 hrs overnight, or to my wall charger (not the OEM) and some times it will charge up to 56%, but 9 out of 10 days, it stops charging at %40. I even tried the tape thing with that battery too... no go.
SO I'm looking into purchasing a new battery(s) off the ebay internet machine, and was curious if anyone had experience with the 1750mah batteries that are supposed to be the same size as the pu16a battery. Check it out here
Anyone familiar with the PowerGen batteries? Check it out here
Recomend a good quality battery from a particular seller (or alternate source)?
I buyed the original battery from member duke nukem, he was a good seller and I´m quite happy with it
Adding a bigger battery to our big Universal is not an option for me, I prefer to carry a spare one on my bag.
thx orb. but it looks like they aren't really doing any business anymore (no items up for sale)
My pc (crappy celeron emachine, salvaged and resuscitated power surge victim) ends up haveing problems (usb mouse stays lit, but doens't respond) when I leave the phone plugged into USB for too long. Almost sounds like my phone is trying to draw more current than the usb port(s) can put out (mouse and printer are the only other usb items plugged in), as well as the Motorola Razr charger I have to use. Any thoughts on that?
Are you sure that duke nukem does not have them?
I remember seeing a post from him not too much time ago regarding Uni batteries
Have you contacted?
is he on this forum? I just checked and didn't find him here. I also checked ebay and he didn't have anything in his store...
i still have original 1620 mah batteries. The price is 22.95$ + postage. contact me at: [email protected]

how many days would it take to receive the package?
Hello
I buyed a lot batteries for me and my universal owner's friends from ebay, sometimes 1750mAh but sometimes normal 1620. I never payed more than 8 € shipping cost includded for each. And almost all works fine. I think one new battery a year is acceptable. I love my old universal, and I carry with 3 more batteries in my bag.
From hong kong, china or japan, the batteries take about one month to reach my house.
By!
Would be nice if you post the links from where you buyed them in order to help others
I just picked up a Gum Plus for my Evo. Have not had any issues with the OEM Evo battery, but I saw a video review of one, and it got my interest for long international flights. It commonly takes me 20-28 hours to get back home from a trip, and I like the idea of knowing I won't have to baby the phones battery, any more.
Neat part of this is that it can likely work with any phone or USB powered device you own. They include a USB to mini-USB cable in the box, but I just used the USB to micro-USB that came with the Evo. It also includes an ipod cable or something, but I have no use for that.
The Gum Plus does not include an AC charger, but can be charged by your PC via the included USB cable.
Luckily, I have an AC to mini-USB charger, from my retired HTC Tilt. Worked fine, and took about two hours to charge it, from the half full state it was delivered in. From an empty state, it takes about 5 hours to charge completely. Once fully charged, 5 tiny LEDs turn on. These indicate charge state when in use.
From a completely dead Evo phone (turned off during charge), it took 2 hours and 45 minutes to go to full charge (green light on phone).
I completed 2 full charges in this manner (phone battery fails boot, to full green light), and 1 partial charge where the battery was taken from 45% to 72% (phone was off while charging). For the partial charge, I waited for the phone to indicate it was not being charged (orange light to no light). This partial charge took 39 minutes.
Regarding the weight of the unit, I used a kitchen scale to measure it out to .125 kilograms. This equals 4.4 ounces. If you are like me, 4.4 ounces has no real world meaning, so I stacked US quarter coins on the scale, until it hit the exact same spot. I stacked 22 quarters ($5.50) before it hit the same weight. It so happens that 22*0.200003364 (weight in ounces of a modern quarter) equals 4.4 ounces, so it looks like the scale is properly calibrated. In short, want to know how heavy it is? Put 22 quarters in your hand. I find it very light, especially as it will be going in my back pack.
This costs $10 more than its cousin, the Gum Pro, but the Gum Pro seems to suffer from a wonky switch that likes to turn itself on when kicking around in a bag (according to a bunch of reviews on Amazon). I really don't think this unit can have that issue, as the power switch is slightly recessed.
So far, I rate this a 5 out of 5. Does exactly what I expected, and I hope to get a few years out of it. I really like that when I upgrade my phone next year, the Gum Plus will continue to add value.

Lists for $70 + free fedex ground shipping. By using "buymeaniphone" as a coupon code, they knocked $7 off, for a total of $63. That is just 3 bucks more than the wonky Gum Pro.

Thanks for the initial impressions. Please continue to update this if you make any further findings. Also, any comments on the weight of the external battery? Heavier or lighter than you expected?

Berner, added final info on number of total charges, and the weight of the unit. Funny, but when I was looking for information prior to my purchase, I could not find any weight info for it (only the Gum Pro). Thanks to the "quarter" test, I can strongly say the Gum Plus is 4.4 ounces.
I think I might be interested in one of these things. Can you take a few pictures of it next to your Evo?

Probably because that was 2 years ago .... gravedigger There's also some 10k mAH for around the same price from other places.
I wanted to get QI charger w/ my Nexus and ended up getting one that included a 10,000 mAh powerbank for basically the same price.
I thought it was going to feel pretty cheap, but to my surprise it seems like its pretty good quality. For 40 bucks for both a QI and a power bank in one it's pretty kick arse! So be forewarned the "IN STOCK" status is BS it ships from China so don't expect within a week; I think I got mine in 3 weeks.
Also the instructions are horrendous, not sure who translated it but its actually comedy. I think says something like... "Use it if it bulges, smells or smokes." (instead of dont) and has FAQ's that have no questions. Literally every line in the instructions does not make sense.
So you can use this as a normal QI charger. As a powerbank you can use QI or plug it in through the USB ports (2) which makes more sense so you dont have 30% power loss as with QI. Powerbank is same shape as phone just about twice as thick and slightly larger width and length. Finished material is smooth so if you have a hard plastic case it may easily slide off or not become centered well enough to charge. I have a case no issues charging through the case. It does also get a full charge and it does not get my phone more than warm (same as wall charger).

I'd be very interested in a test to see what the actual capacity of this is. Im always wary with a no name brand battery from China because they tend to always overstate their battery capacities. Wish there were some reviews, but I might give it a go anyway to test it out myself.
Looks interesting, but the lack of reviews make it sound dubious

Its weird how almost all of the qi power banks on amazon have no reviews. Seems like something everyone should have. Ridiculously useful. I am wondering why the one posted above is a good 25% cheaper than all the others of the same 10,000 mah capacity though.
Would absolutely love for the OP to test how many full charges of the Nexus 5 he could get from the device using USB and then Wireless charging, but that would probably take a while. Also OP, when you say that the case is smooth, is it smooth like the soft touch plastic on the back of the Nexus 5 or smooth like the shiny plastic on galaxy phones?
I'm waiting for RavPower Qi Wireless Charging Pad with a built-in 4800mAh battery coming back in stock. It seems like a great fit with my Nexus 5 as I checked a review from WPCentral.

no problem but may be a few days I'm getting over a day cycle on my nexus so far. I bought it mostly for the QI charger the bank was a bonus/ I will keep a log but try and get full cycles out of it to make it easier.
As far as the smoothness it is more like the shiny plastic on the galaxy phones. My phone has a plastic case it doesn't slide to much but I could see if it got bumped it would move. I had bought a screen protector someone posted that i don't like it's kind of rubbery or tacky feel i was thinking about taking it off and putting it on the charger so it was a little more "grippy".
Give me a few days I'll put up some stats for you

Amazons having a 50% off deal on battery packs if you buy the RAVpower qi charger. I just picked up the charger and a RAV 8400mAh pack for just over 60 bucks. I've been wanting both for a while now and this deal was just to good to pass up. I do a lot of backpacking and have been debating between a battery pack vs. a solar charger for some time now as well. The pack is actually lighter than any of the solar charges I was looking at. And for 18 bucks was a no brainer.
so here are some stats on this as a power bank not sure how much power loss over a few days is normal but after a full charge of the bank using the cable here is what I came up with:
night one charger started at 51% .49 of the full 2300 mAh nexus 5 battery = 1127 mAh
night two started at 18% .82 = 1886
night three started at 22% .78 = 1794
night four started at 28% .72 = 1656
night five started at 9% died at 32% = 529
______________________________________________________________________
TOTAL mAh= 6992

Interesting. And that is using the cable and not the Qi wireless charging? Its always said that Qi will have around a 30% loss in efficiency, which would make your numbers perfectly in line with what a 10,000 mah battery should do. Of course if you were using a cable it might just be that the low cost of the device translates to a less efficient transfer of energy. Still able to get roughly 3 full charges out of the power bank is pretty awesome.

Yea thats through the cable, I know even turned off there is power loss on rechargeable batteries but I don't know what is normal power degradation equates to in a percentage. I agree though roughly 3 full charges may not be a full 10,000 mAh bank, but at the price even if it equates to a 7000 bank its not bad. Throw in the QI (which is mainly what I bought this for anyway) and this is pretty sweet deal
I'll do it again and see what I come up with for round 2

The one with solar panel is a joke. You need direct sunlight and it will be charging for a day, waste of money.
You are looking for external battery. Those are inexpensive, I reviewed a ton of those (did you see a sticky at the top of the forum with all my reviews?). Or you can check out link directly from my signature.
Best one, the most popular brand on amazon hundreds/thousands of 5-star reviews, which I have reviewed is by Anker. For what you are looking, you should get the highest capacity which is also compact enough for traveling. For $50 you either get new gen Astro 3, 12000 mAh (http://www.amazon.com/12000mAh-External-Battery-Technology-Smartphones/dp/B00CEZBKTO/) or older Astro E5, 15000 mAh (http://www.amazon.com/15000mAh-Portable-Ultra-High-Capacity-External/dp/B00D5T3QK4/). Don't know what phone you have, but most likely these will be 6x-7x capacity of your phone battery. So we are talking about at least a day or so of continuous use with your phone Read my reviews to find out which one you like better.
thanks man i didnt even know they could go that long i was expecting 4-6 hours of continuous use.
i have galaxy s3 right now
and with that in mind i wanted the solar panel so i can leave it trickle charging while its sitting unused.
i dont plan to use it every day just when im away from charger on long trips when using navigation or airplane and such.
or camping for several days with no electrical outlets around
how bad is the solar charging on them
can yougive me an idea for example if i would leave it in the sun for a day ( sunny day)

From everything I've read, you have to leave it in direct sunlight for many hours just to recharge it back to 50%. Almost doesn't seem worth it.
Here is one i'm thinking of trying.
G power, power bank power modular.
power bank with 6000mAh upto 42000mAh or more, with included solar panel charger on the move.
ignore the 20 second advertising in the video.
http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XNjQzMzAwMDE2.html
I have a battery pack with solar...Useless I will say. Charging the pack goes quicker on direct ac than leaving it in the sun, charges extremely slow. I regret purchasing and does not even hold a charge that long.
Ebay has so many kinds of these power banks with huge sizes. I doubt that is real, so i wanted to ask if anybody has reasonable size (not over 3k or 4k mAh), that is safe and not made in China?
Buying something Chinese is really bad, literally every thing i have from china has broken in the first day. And i do not want to buy something electronic like that battery pack from china that could explode or something. All i need is a power pack that could charge around 75% of my battery. I do not need some huge thing. I simply can not get my phone to last throughout a normal school day on normal usage.
Look at the ones Anker offers. They are not cheap but worth every cent.
I have got a large one with about 6000 mAh. But they have also got smaller ones.
Most of their batteries are able to deliver high charging currents, which enables you to charge your phone just as fast as on AC power.
I can really recommend Anker.

Though I read your "no china" criteria, I would still suggest you to try out the Mi Power Bank. I have been using it for almost 4 months now, and although I had my own reservations regarding a Chinese product that could (literally) kill me, it has been terrific till date. It charges up the phone at almost the same rate as the wall charger, and it itself charges up pretty fast. Comes in two sizes- 5200 mah and 10400 mah. The 5200 mah power bank is what I have, and it is sufficient to fully charge my N5 and charge a Grand 2 upto 20-25%. Plus, it is a lot cheaper that the power banks made by Sony and likes.
Btwn..It actually comes from Xiomi, the makers of Mi3 which has been one of the most successful phones in 2014. This is the only thing I relied on while getting the power bank, and boy am I happy with it.
I didnt knew sony makes power banks too, and thanks for suggestions!
Also, during decharging, does the power bank heats up? (When i charge my phone with the power bank)

No it does not. You can see some YouTube reviews if that helps you. Not sure if you are bothered about it but the finish of the body is the best I have seen on power banks.

I have NEWNOW power bank. I can charge my n5 for about 5 times completely. Its capacity is 10400mAh. Has 1A and 2,1A charging ports. With the 2,1A port charges my phone fully in about 15-25 minutes. Highly recommend!

EDIT: also there's flashligt! Not sure why, and who needs, but there is

It's impossible to full charge the phone in less than 30minutes, certainly not at 2.1A.
Also that looks like a cheap Chinese charger to me. When you see 10,000 maH ($20) for less than the price as most 5000mAh you can assume that they lied about the specifications.
Xiaomi asks 19$ to ship Mi Power Bank to Romania from its European hq! Isn't that a little bit too much?
I've read through this thread because I have the same question. Are there any power banks actually not made in China once you scratch all the "it's made in China BUT" comments?

Ebay has so many kinds of these power banks with huge sizes. I doubt that is real, so i wanted to ask if anybody has reasonable size (not over 3k or 4k mAh), that is safe and not made in China?
Buying something Chinese is really bad, literally every thing i have from china has broken in the first day. And i do not want to buy something electronic like that battery pack from china that could explode or something. All i need is a power pack that could charge around 75% of my battery. I do not need some huge thing. I simply can not get my phone to last throughout a normal school day on normal usage.

They are chinese, but Anker has really good build quality and quality control.
