Gps Recivers & Tom Tom 5

Hiya
Im having a few problems with my bluetooth gps reciver and tom tom 5 Im wondering if you guys can help. Basically I cant get tom tom to see my gps reciver. Even though its connected in the bluetooth connections manager. Ive tried all the com ports in tom tom with no joy anyone had a similar problem and knows how to fix it such as manually setting the coms port perhaps?

That's the thread, yes. And you can find that file on TomTom's website. I forgot to mention that this is meant for WM5, I'm so used to everything being BA WM5 these days, so if your'e running WM2003SE, I don't think it will help much...

Right tis working, i'll let you know how i did it just incase anyone has the same problem
step by step instructions
1)Switch on bluetooth gps reciver and bluetooth on xda
2)Go in to bluetooth manager
3) Create a new connection, and go in explore a bluetooth device, select the serial port option
4)Then go in bluetooth settings services tab and then go down to serial port connection, check enable service and uncheck authorization required and passkey required
5)Next click on advanced and uncheck the "default device for outgoing serial connections: bt gps, display the device selection screen the next time an outgoing serial connection is attempted.
6) Make a note of the inbound com port (mine was 5)
7) Hit ok
8) Next open up tom tom
9) Go in the change preferences tab
10) Then in to the gps status
11) Then the configure tab
12) Then select other bluetooth Gps
13) Then select which ever bluetooth serial com port was your in bound one (mine was 5) then hit done
14) i suggest you walk outside then your gps works faster it may take a few mins to find you

Also I have a HDH-600 headset and both dont appear to work at the same time.
my version is BT-PPC/PE version 1.0.0 build 1900.
any ideas?

erm ive had the same problem mate, im the one who wrote the post above. I havent found a solution yet and ive tried pretty hard for a couple of weeks. So i guess its tough look mate untill tomtom bring out an update or someone codes a fix for it.

I have another BT handsfree called an ADB Speaker, and that works perfectly when using TomTom. That's a BT car handsfree, btw.

GPS Help Please!!

Just bought a new Nokia LD-1W GPS and trying to connect via bluetooth.
How do I pair the two devices and how do I create a incoming/outgoing com port to work with tomtom.
I've searched the forum & found nothing:-(
Please can Someone post a step by step process please as it's all confusing.
Anyones help will be gratefully appreciated.

Turn on Bluetooth on the Phone, Turn on the GPS unit.
Go to Bluetooth Manager.
Press Bluetooth symbol on the bottom task bar.
Scroll to the bottom of Bluetooth Connection Wizard.
Select Explore a Bluetooth Device.
after a while you GPS unit should become visable, select it.
On the next page select SPP Slave, then press Next followed by Finish.
On the Bluetooth My Shortcutspage (which sould show automatically at this point) Tap & Hold the GPS icon, from the pop-up select connect. You should get two small green arrows on the GPS icon showing it is connected.
All Done, all you are left with is to configure TomTom, run it up then go to prefferences/ GPS page, select "Other cabled NMEA device" (yes I know its a BT unit but trust me), set the Baud rate (check for this with the supplied info from the manufacturer, or web site, then on the last page go for outgoing Bluetooth comm port 6 (It helps if you put it in landscape mode for this bit as you can see the port numbers this way) - tke it all outside and wait for upto 30 mins for a lock, after this it should be far faster. Sorry for the edit, but didn't add the TomTom bit in first time!!

Thanks mike for your thorough step by step guide, but my main problem is making a new bluetooth com port so tomtom can see it in the GPS settings.
Do you know how to access them in bluetooth setting to change outgoing and incoming ports?
I'm lost:-(

can some one here please help me this is driving me mad for days now i have been looking thro the forums at some of the posts how to set up tomtom 5 and how to setup the gps bluetooth receiver i have followed all instructions how to but iam not getting any where tomtom is installed Ok the gps control panel is installed but i cant seem to get any blue tooth com ports to show up in tomtom apart from

Hi Sidd,
I have tried that. The problem is that the phone won't allow me to connect to any other port than 8, 4 and 0 and in the Tom Tom menu there is no option of chosing those ports.

Make sure ur Beam is OFF
Start->Settings->Connection->Beam
MUST be UN-TICKED.
(By the way I am in London, where r u?)

One more idea :idea:
1. Pair ur GPS
2. Once pairing is done, switch OFF ur phone's bluetooth (bcs ur phone is engaging the com ports), do not switch OFF ur GPS.
3. Now soft reset ur phone, make sure the Bluetooth is still ON
4. Start TomTom, see if there are more ports now. Try 5 or 6

Thanks for another piece of advice but unfortunately that did not help either My Beam is OFF and I've tried the way with soft reset but that did not work either. I am getting desperate here
My device is XDA Exec and I am using (or at least trying to use) a BT GPS receiver with it. After pairing devices everything seems to be all right except the fact that I am not able to assign any other ports than 0, 4 and 8 to be used with GPS receiver. As I mentioned earlier there is no option of choosing any of these ports in TomTom5 software with the only options as follows:
qct data interface
RIL on com6
com7
serial cable on com1
Ir on com3
Maybe you know any ComPort Manager software I could use to assign the Bluetooth connection to a specific port?
As far as my location is concerned I am in Hayes - that's Zone5 near Heathrow airport.

I had exactly the same problem than you guys...
But first of all I couldn't even install tomtom5.
The version 5.0 crashed in every attempt to install and version 5.21, simply crashed when choosing the map.
Well, I'll try to put every step I did to get it working.
First of all, had the BT GPS paired with K-JAM and set new outgoing port COM6 to it. (in my case I only had COM6 or COM7).
1 - With the full copy of 5.0 version on HDD, replaced setup.exe with the one from the 5.21 update (this allowed the setup for 5.0 to run, and is the one that has the gps.cab file);
2 - Updated with version 5.21;
3 - Copied the map to \Storage Card\
4 - In Windows created the file CurrentMap.dat using Notepad containing: & \Storage Card\XXXX-Map\ (where XXXX is the map name. the final \ is mandatory);
5 - Copied the voiceXX.cab to device and run it;
At this point I was having the same problem (both COM6 nor COM7 appears in tomtom)
6 - Downloaded the GPSInfo_WM5.zip attached here and installed it;
7 - Executed this program, configured it to COM6 (port I had configured BT GPS to work with) selected the correct baud rate (very important, it's on the user's manual of the BT GPS) and click Start GPS to check it's response to the program;
8 - Click Close GPS so that the COM port was not in use;
9 - Started tomtom, edit the settings and chose Other Bluetooth GPS.
Now the ports COM6 and COM7 was there!!!!
10 - Chose COM6 and in 10 seconds tomtom was trying to aquire satelites.
I hope this helps you all. I spent weeks trying to make tomtom work and I got it working yesterday.
BTW, excellent forum. If it wasn't this forum (and another one only in portuguese I was still mad with this thing.

Pairing a GPS with XDA Exec to get TomTom working
After several hours trawling forums and trying lots of things here's what worked for me on an XDA Exec running WM5. In fact I was shocked when it worked! In return for this can someone please think up the next thing after Toothache! The WM5 bluetooth connection thing could also do with a re-write - as could the WM5/XDA Exec instructions/FAQs/help, etc... on BT:
If your aim is to get TomTom working AND you're using a non-TomTom BT GPS, try this (the TomTom GPS seems to install itself without much problem):
1. Pair the GPS with your device BEFORE installing TomTom, because the GPS port needs to be already setup on your device for TomTom to recognise when installed.
2. Then install TomTom
3. Launch the BT connection thing in WM5. Make sure the BT is discoverable (first tab). Select 'Security' tab and ensure 'Authentication (Passkey) required is checked.
4. Go to 'Devices' tab and select 'new partnership...' The pairing thing should find your GPS and will then ask for the passkey - select next WITHOUT entering anything even if there's a passkey. If you enter the passkey now you will not get step 5 which is a crucial milestone.
5. The device should now ask if you want to add the GPS to your list, select yes
6. The name of the GPS is shown. Ensure 'serial' port is checked and hit next
7. You will be asked for the passkey again - enter it this time
8. At this point the GPS may look like it's not paired. The lights may flash as if unpaired. You'll also get a question mark icon next to the GPS in your list. Not to worry.
9. Select 'com ports' tab and select 'new outgoing port'. You should see your GPS listed. Select it and hit next. From the list of ports select COM8. Make sure the 'Secure connection' is UNCHECKED - otherwise you'll be pairing everytime you start TomTom! Select Finish. You should see your GPS (COM8) listed in 'COM ports' tab.
10. Turn off 'device is discoverable' (first tab).
11. Now install TomTom. Having installed the GPS as above, TomTom will now know about COM8 i.e. where your GPS is to be found. If you hadn't done that first there would be no COM8 and no GPS connected to it as far as TomTom is concerned.
12. Turn on the GPS
13. Launch TomTom and go to 'preferences/ GPS Settings'. Select 'configure'. Select 'Other bluetooth GPS'
14. You should get a list of ports and with any luck you should see 'COM8' - select it and hit 'done'.
15. I think at this point the GPS page in TomTom came alive, or maybe I had to restart TomTom - can't remember. And it works thus far!

I have a TT GPS module and have just installed a ROM to give me 3.5.
I did have the GPS working with GPSDash, but had to hard reboot and can not.
I have tried different com ports for both the GPS and the new MS GPS mananger thing, but GPSDash cannt find it.
Anyone else running this new ROM able to help please?

Installing TomTom Navigator 5.1
15. Using File Explorer, navigate to the .CAB file you copied to your SD card and install R-Edit
on your Pocket PC. R-Edit can be acquired from http://www.pocketfleet.homeunix.com/REGEDIT.htm
but you can also Google for any other Windows Mobile 5 Registry Editor.
16. Run R-Edit from the Programs Menu.
17. Within R-Edit, navigate to the registry key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ControlPanel\GPS Settings"
18. Within the registry key, delete the DWORD entry marked "Hide"
19. Add a DWORD entry called "Group" and give it a Value of "2"
20. Soft reset your Pocket PC.
21. On your Pocket PC, go to Settings > Connections to ensure that the GPS icon is there.
If it is not then I can only apologise but it may not be possible to get TomTom working with
your GPS device. It is necessary for TomTom to see a specific GPS serial port that can
(as far as I can tell) only be set by this GPS connection program. After you have paired
with your Bluetooth GPS device you could try setting an Outgoing port to COM7: as that is
a default COM port that TomTom Navigator can connect to. Do step 22 then skip to step 26.
22. Turn on your Bluetooth GPS and stick it in a location that it's likely to get a signal.
On your Pocket PC, enable Bluetooth and search for new devices. Establish a bond (pair) with
your GPS device and ensure you check the "Serial Port" option.
23. Go to Settings > Connections > Bluetooth. Create a new Incoming COM Port. I chose COM8 for this.
24. Other guides on the Internet tell you to also create an Outgoing port and setting it
as COM7 but doing this would not work on the PPC that I was using so I had to create the
Outgoing COM port on COM0. Either way you need an Outgoing COM port to be set.
If you can set it as COM7: then you should do so, if not, use COM0:
25. Go to Settings > Connections > GPS. Set the GPS communication port to the same
Outgoing COM port that you set above. For the PPC I was using,
I had to set it as COM0: above so will set it here as COM0: also.
The "Manage GPS Automatically" checkbox should already be checked but if it isn't, check it and OK out.
26. Start up TomTom Navigator using the Programs menu and run through the setup procedure as
normal but select "Other Bluetooth GPS" when asked to select a GPS device.
27. TomTom will ask you to now pair your GPS device with your Pocket PC.
We've already done that so click Continue.
28. You will be given a list of ports that your GPS device is likely to be on.
Remember that this is the Outgoing port that we created earlier in steps 24 and 25.
Basically the COM port you set here must be the same as the one you set in step 24 and 25.
29. Select the relevant COM port and then click Next. You will likely be taken straight
in to the map view and with any luck your Pocket PC and GPS device will start communicating and your Pocket PC will show your position on the map.
30. If you made a mistake in setting the COM port that your GPS device lives on,
simply tap anywhere on the screen. Tap Preferences, tap Next three times until you
see an icon that looks like a satellite labelled GPS status. Tap that icon and then tap configure to change the COM port.

(Solved) External GPS in Windows mobile 6.5 beta

Has anybody managed to configure an external bluetooth GPS unit with the new windows mobie 6.5beta?
I can pair them, but the JRTGPS (JR-29) remains disconnected and when I try to connect it I get:

Your device did not connect with JRTGPS. The connection failed or the passcode is incorrect
Tomtom naturally does not see the GPS unit.
See settings at the bottom. By the way the JR-29 are very sturdy, small and compact and used standard nokia batteries so a lovely and cheap 42 channels bluetooth gps receiver!

Thats one of the best GPS I've had. I had another BT and had problems locking on Sats. Had a wired one and also had problems with Sats. GPSlim 236 always locks on atleast 6 Sats and I've had up to 9 at a time. Great buy!
@Gloomyboy: I haven't flashed 6.5 yet, so can't give you feedback there mate.

I have TomTom GPS and it works well with WM 6.5.

I have a Pharos and it works like a charm.

pairs ok but afterwards stays disconnected (under the new bluetooth settings) no matter what I do

Verify a few things...
1. Make sure you don't set BT GPS as Serial
2. Make sure you have assigned an Outgoing COM Port to the GPS (You need to know which one your GPS uses. IE: GPSlim236 uses Port 6.
3. Try both, Secured and Unsecured for the port you chose.(I use secured)
4. On Settings>> GPS Settings>>Program: verify that you have (None) for "Program Port Software
5. On Settings>> GPS Settings>>Hardware: Select the same COM port assigned under BT Outgoing Port. (my case Port 6)(Baud Rate 115200)
6. On Settings>> GPS Settings>>Access: Select Automatic

Settings for GPS in WM 2003 and WM 6.x are totally different.

In case anybody else has a JR-29 (they were very popular on ebay when I bought it some 2 years ago, cheap and with 42 channels)
Bluetooth Settings:
- Outgoing COM PORT 8
- Authentication passkey required = ON
External GPS:
- Program port NONE
- COM Hardware port 8
- Bauds 9600
- manage GPS on (works with off as well but seems to take longer to handshake)

I have a gpslim240 but my situation is like gloomyboy. When I tried to pair my gps, it always said "wrong password". Can you tell me more about what you did to make it work ?
Did you do all the settings part BEFORE or AFTER trying to pair the devices ?
The GPS problem is the only thing make me regret to have a BA because all other things work great.
Any help is welcome.

As soon as I try to pair up I am prompted for a password and enter 0000
that has never been a problem for me
I hear other passwords are 1234
and 00000

I know my password is 0000, I switch to WM2003 each trip I make to be able to use my GPS. I use it also with my laptop.
So I know for sure this is a problem with any rom WM5+. I was hopeless until today. I just want to know exactly what you done because if this is only a settings problem, it's a great new ... I thought it was a driver problem.

well for my GPS it is a MUST to disable secure connection but I have to enable authentica. Play with those settings...

I too have a problem like gloomyboy while using Windows mobile 6.5 beta without Ramdisk version. But I can connect to my external GPS Holux 1000 by using Garmin XT 5.00.20 software.
I didnt face any problems pairing or conecting to my holux 1000 with ramdisk version from Sundream's one.

Try swampys V3 full rom (not the basic version), it definately has working bluetooth drivers.
Setting up external Bluetooth GPS
You only have to do this, if you want to use an external Bluetooth GPS. If you have never used your external Bluetooth GPS, this takes five minutes.
Connecting via bluetooth
* Make sure that the Bluetooth GPS device is turned on.
* On your phone go to Start-->Settings-->Connections-->Bluetooth.
* Set the checkbox "Turn on bluetooth" on the "Mode" tab.
* Go to the "devices" tab and choose "Add new device".
* Your bluetooth GPS device should appear in the list, otherwise recheck that its bluetooth functionality is turned on.
* Select your GPS device and click "continue" on the very bottom of the screen.
* You may be asked for a password - if you know the password enter it of course. Probably you don't because you didn't configure it.
o If you don't know the password, first try entering nothing (empty password) and continue.
o If that doesn't work try entering four zeroes "0000".
o Otherwise try reading the GPS devices manual or the manufacturer's web page.
* After you took that hurdle, check "serial port" as connection service - then click finish.
* Your device should now be listed on the bluetooth devices tab.
Configuring the COM port
* Go to the COM tab in the same Bluetooth system settings.
* Select "new connection".
* Select your Bluetooth GPS device.
* A COM connection will be shown "e.g. COM8", note this down, and click finish.
* Go to Start-->Settings-->GPS (or External GPS).
* Go to the "Hardware" tab and make sure that the GPS hardware connection is the COM connection you just noted down.
Check if your GPS works

Sorry for the clarification/correction for the benefit of the forum users.
NOTE 1 >> So far in the years I've been using BT Devices, all of them always use password 0000.
NOTE 2 >> Serial port is only used for WIRED attachments using a Data Cable. If its BT, do not check Serial.
NOTE 3 >> COM ports are not chosen randomly. You need to know the specific port that your device uses.

You can go to BuyGPSNow and click on Customer Service... Ask a Question... and get the exact COM port that GPSlim 240 uses.

Here is what I did :
-Add BT device.

In external GPS,
-Choose Hardware Com 6, 38400
Use COM 6 in any GPS software.
I tried to use COM 9 for "program port", but the GPS softwares didn't find a GPS on this port. But since COM 6 works, I'm REALLY happy.

so what is the cheapest GPS unit I can buy for BA?

2 years ago I bought my JRT-29 for 35 euros on ebay
It was advertised as bluetooth GPS 42 channels and is black and probably 5cm x 5cm (or 2" x 2" if you are in the states)
It uses standard nokia phone batteries which are easy to source so a very good purchase as far as I am concerned and works with the BA

Hi,
Beg to differ with you:
1. I personally have a BT carkit mirror that has a pairing code of 8888, and I once had a BT headset that had the pairing code printed on a label hidden under the battery. So it is not always 0000 although most of the time it is.
2. Serial is NOT only for wired use. Older BT stacks used to use a virtual serial port for BT protocol communication and some still do. I have a Holux GPSlim 236 and the only service that shows up after I pair it is Serial.
3. The COM port used is not random, but you can pick any one that is free. I have successfully use COM6, COM7 and COM8 with the Holux connecting to IGO. You just have to make sure that you set up the same COM port in the BT settings and in the GPS program.
Personally, I dont even use the external GPS program. I set up the BT device and COM port in BT settings, then I go into the GPS program (IGO or Google Maps) and set the same settings there and it all works.
Hope this helps anybody who is having problems.
