Hiya all.
Looking for advice on GPS units for the exec/universal. I'm new to GPS and want a unit that has good battery life as will usually be used on the move. Would be using TomTom, although not sure which version yet. Would really appreciate some advice from people who have units already. Is there anything I need to watch out for?
Thanks in advance
I've been very happy with the Globalsat BT-338 -- it's a SirfIII-based unit with a high-capacity 1700mAh battery, so you can get 15-20 hours operation out of a single charge.
I'm using this one with Tom Tom 6:

Whatever you go for, try to make sure it has the Sirf Star III chipset - have a look at the forums at www.pocketgpsworld.com
The solar GPS receivers are also quite good because it can be charged by the daylight at the same time while you are using it! This gives you a good battery life of 15 hours also.
I suggest you get the one with mini-USB type of charging like the solar one I just mentioned. Because there are quite a lot of in car charger including some Universa's car holder come with mini-USB. So by having mini-USB means you can charge it much easier in the car really.

Well, I suppose it'll work for all the Universal variants, right?
Also www.batteryupgrade.com are now selling Exec batteries. Have ordered one will report when I receive it.
Charging an extra battery is going to be a pain Hope there's gonna be some 3rd party cradle that allows charging of an extra battery like with the older devices.

I wish they could have made it more than 1750.
just bought a apre battery from ebay too...cost 15.00 inc P&P. Better than 25.00 ive seen elsewhere.
agree 'bout the cradle though. found a cradle but doesn't have a spare place for charging the battery too.
BTW also beware.... syncing daily with usb cable part charges the batery and will cause memory effect...
use blutooth instead.

Do Lithium Ions sufer from memory effect?
I presume that's hat the battery is?
No, LiON batterys do not have memory. Unlike NiCad's which do.
General rule for LiON batts is to keep em cooked on charge, rather than flat out for any length of time, deep discharges can create bubbles on the cells apparently!
Although some latops have conflicting LiON advice, stating that you shouldnt leave the batt on mains for more than a week at a time.
In addition there's text in the "newer" manuals for phones and PDAs stating that the LiON batts wont have "full" capability until theyve had a few deep discharge cycles.
So my advice is keep the thing on charge at all times, but dont worry about running it right down from time to time, but be sure to get it back on charge soon after a deep discharge.
I have killed a perfectly good ipaq3630 batt by leaving the device for 6months off charge. Conversly I have no evidence to suggest detrimental performance from my Eten-P700 which is hardl 8) y ever off charge.
Last point, I believe the later devices dont actually full discharge, I suspect they "hard set" off whilst a little juice remains. Unlike the older Ipaqs etc which drain to the last drop (bubble?)

Hello again. How many cycles or at least how long does it extend the built-in battery. This sound very enticing especially on long trips.
RE
Hi cktlcmd,
Base on calculation its about 5 full charges although I have not counted it since I'll plug the battery into my set whenever I'm out surfing at hotspots
One thing to note is that if you've the phone turn on, bt turn on and wifi also turn on then the power consumption is greater than the external bat can supply since USB DC current supply is much lower than the AC adaptor of 1A DC
You'll see tha battery level drop, however, without the ext battery you cab bet that the battery level will drop faster.
Thanks FOSA. This charger is on my wish list now.
RE
Hi cktlcmd,
FYI, if you intend to buy this battery do take note that you also have to purchase the intelligent cable (with a built-in chip) unless it comes with the battery. Its a proprietary cable with a proprietary port on one end and a 5-pin mini USB port on the other end to connet to the Universal.
The output port of the battery is NOT a standard USB port.

In truth though, you could hardly describe that as a battery, unless I'm being taken to the wrong page each time?
I'd describe that as more of a battery extender. A good idea nonetheless, I used to use a little 4xAA one with the JAM... good if you're in the arsehole of nowhere...
Hey, wonder if it's pin and power compatible, still got it along with a holder and other accessories...
Gotten a liking for MSN Messenger on the Exec, but it's a battery hog. Looking for a decent larger capacity battery, or a charger that can charge the device PLUS a second standard battery.
I've trawled through the threads and don't see much, but that could just be me!
What is the definitive answer for those hoping to get a DECENT days work out of this device...?
No-one? Damn.
Take a look at this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=34638
It is found a few post down.

Had already posted on that thread, but don't see a "decent larger capacity battery, or a charger that can charge the device PLUS a second standard battery" that I can actually buy. Cheers anyhow.
Here is a link for a battery for the EXEC: http://www.batteryupgrade.com/ You have to choose for what type of PDA, brand , and type of phone.
It is the same as the original though. I don't think there is an extended battery nor charger available yet. But this will give you an extra battery for the moment. The only draw back is, you have to use the actual device as the charger too.
Couple of suggestions
This ones an external battery 3600mAH -http://www.gpsforless.co.uk/product_details.php?id=3131
This goes inside BUT needs a new rear panel with a power bulge - 300mAH though -
http://www.gpsforless.co.uk/product_details.php?id=2978
Both of these items are reportedly not available as of now but on their way (end of Feb 2006) but the following is - its a slightly more powerful 1750mAH replacement -
http://www.gpsforless.co.uk/product_details.php?id=2230
Just for the record I am nothing to do with the company selling these apart from having bought items from them in the past!
Hope this helps!

I'd love a pic of that when it's inside the JASJAR....
EDIT: $200???? Maybe not.
EDIT 2: When we gonna see a proper double battery or 2nd battery + JASJAR charger?
http://www.lionbattery.com/description.php?noproduit=324
This battery still hasnt become available. The site says it should have been available 1st March. Any ideas?
Cheap!!!! Check this out! But the rear cover doesn't come in black though!?

200 $ ? They are crazy....
But it really look sweet.
Is there an external charger available for Universal battery.
My old battery shuts down at 34% of power, hence I've purchased a new one.I am a 'heavy' user so I just thought it would be better if there were any external charger available for the spare battery.

Hmmmm... I'd be interested in this too. Use a second battery for emergencies when travelling and it's a pain in the arse swapping them and trying to fully charge them both before setting off.
got my battery and the charger from this guy...appox 10.5$ for both
http://myworld.ebay.com/lifestyle0806
That's a pretty good deal, but...
...looking specifically for some kind of cradle charger just for the battery so you can drop it in and charge without it being in the phone... think that's what kalya is after too...
i mean i got the battery and desktop charger for 10.5$...if you need pics or any other info let me know

Man, that's sweet... I'm sold. Just wondering how the battery performs? Is it an official one cos it looks like it?
Ah, well, I bought one anyway... I'm willing to pay that just for the charger, and fallenczar, if you say he's a good seller, that's good enough for me. Many thanks.

well the battery in the pic is the original one...the new battery is SUPERB...this is a pretty handy thing...charges the battery real quick...the only thing you have to be sure of is that you have to put in your charger into the mini-usb port of this charger with a little force as it is quite hard...and the led takes a couple of sec to show the charging indicator

Sweet... so long as it does the job. I'm impressed, only ordered yesterday and it was shipped this morning. Nice.
Thank you both, fallenczar and spydertracks. It's exactly what I want.Your 'little' discussion answers all questions, thanks again.
One alternative worth considering is http://www.gpsforless.co.uk/product_details.php?id=4970 which will allow around four or five full charges to the Universal, I have been using the slightly smaller capacity pack for quite a while. Very handy when using the 3G connection, just keep it plugged in to the phone and it tops off the battery - Mike

Interesting indeed! I got to have one just a wonderful thing.
Great when you are outdoors with your GPS PDA and its draining your battery, just recharge!!
the tests i've seen of such devices to be able to provide enough power for the pda not still drain the batt they need to be pretty big
otherwise they maybe able to charge a turned off device in ½day

Seen this on eBay for £29 plus £2.50 postage, couldn't find a thread on here about it, wondering if anyone has this and if so can you recommend it, any reviews, etc.
Cheers
No one knows about this?
Hey mate, had a slightly older version with lower capacity for a few months now. I can highly recommend it, really hells to be able to carry extra battery power around for long plane journeys etc. Seems to be good build quality and has decent capacity compared to quoted specs. Hasn't speed working so far anyway. One thing I would say is don't get it with the extendable USB cable, liable to break in my experience ;-)
