I have look at the Motorola Chargers and it is the same USB b mini as the HTC can you use this charger for the HTC as I an not sore of the Volts
Thanks
Chris
it will work fine with that charger cable, same (5V) - Mike
It will work (my Orbit is plugged into the charger from my Motorola L2 as I type), but it's not just down to the voltage.
Both HTC and Motorola wire the mini USB in non standard ways - hence the HTC Artemis (and Hermes) also uses the mini USB for headphones, and the Motorola has a peculiarity that it will not charge from a cable plugged in to a laptop's USB port, but only from a mains powered adaptor. One of the pins (can't remember which one) is used to indicate whether the cable is being used for "charging" or "syncing".
So just because 2 devices both use mini USB at 5V does not necessarily mean that they can be charged from each other's chargers. I was originally thrilled to think that I could just bring a single charger on business trips to recharge my Artemis, L2 and BlackBerry. Then I found out that it's not quite so simple :-(
My big interest is the Energizer come out with Energi To Go with Mini USB instant cell phone charger this is good for emergences so if it works Motorola I hob it can work for my HTC

This is my experience based on the years of practice and not on the theoretical "brainwork".
I have HTC P3300 and I even never unpack the wall charger and USB sync cable. I used to have Motorola MPx200 years ago (think it was 2003), since than I changed a couple of devices (Motorola MPx200->BlueAngel->Magician->Motorola A780->HTC P3300), but what stay unchanged is my wall charger. Yes it is charger of my old MPX200, it was plugged once to the mains plug in 2003 and never have been taken out, and all devices what I had after MPx200 were charged by this charger.
The same I can say about my car charger. It's traced back to 2003 and it's original Motorola MPx200 car charger(I think it's standard Motorola car charger for all miniUSB phones). Works flawlessly. I was recently in trip from Amsterdam to Milan and back and from Amsterdam to Malmo and back using the TomTom on P3300 and of course it was permanently charged by my "old" Motorola car charger. No problem at all.
In my business trips I use the Universal World charger which has usb port and I use USB-miniUSB absolutely unbranded cable to charge my all "mini USB" devices including P3300 and Motorola BT stereo headset.
Concerning the sync cable, it's even more dramatic because I use USB cable of my Sony CyberShot camera. And again, all devices what I used to have and what I have now, synchronize and charge with no problem with this cable.
Ok, it's my experience Maybe I'm just a lucky dog , but I certainly prefer to stay like this

PLUS + I have also been able to sync using the V3 data cable too
i never experienced any problems using motorola charger or data cable with PDA (Universal & Artemis) and vice versa. Btw i use charger from moto bt HT820 for artemis as well.
only one prob. is moto charger has only 0.5A, so pda charges longer, or not(universal - higher power consum.) no prob with arte. HTC charger is 2A instead of 0.5A. BTW no prob to use 2A charger instead of 0.5A device "eats" only what it needs and is capable of, and maybe charges more quickly
Only Atom refused to charge with other chargers
So far only XDA Atom by Quanta has been a problem when it comes to charging it with other chargers However the activesync works with all mini usb cables. I also use my Canon camera cable for syncing sometimes

Motorola V3i charger - Motorola genuine car charger - Sony Mini DV usb cable - All O.K.
On the same theme, does anyoine know if the Orbit mains charger will work happily with an iPod? I have the Orbit, kid has the iPod, and we're about to go away. I'd like to just take the Orbit lead to charge both and save on buying an iPod charge lead. They're both mini USB. Thoughts?
I use HTC & Motorola Charger for following: Artemis, Universal, MPx200, Motorola Btooth Stereo - which one is the nearest, I use moto for Artemis and vice versa.
Actually mini USB chargers are mostly compatible with different devices. With the notable exception of the Blackberry devices. They seem to wire the connector in a different way and a Blackberry won't charge with a generic mini USB charger This is the only exception I've seen so far (MPX200, Qtek S110, Qtej 9100, Holux GPS, Artemis and Blackberry 8700v tested). I still use my Motorola car charger for my Artemis btw

From my experience, T-Mobile SDA also would not charge from Motorola mains charge, but Mororola MPx200 did it very good from SDA charger.
But it's already history I would surprise very much if I see the person with the first T-Mobile SDA in his hands ;-)
Simple solution
Cut open your USB lead, and connect just the red and black wires, they're the 5v+ (red) and - (black) lines - if the rest aren't conencted, all the devices will assume it's just plugged into a charger (of course yo can't use it for syncing or anything...)
This is also useful for car use - but any cheapo phone charger (5v) and connect a mini usb cable using the red and black...
krazr, and orbit charge fine with each other
even took the p**s and used a m8s tom tom charger to charge my orbit hehehe. worked a treat.

Hi, I have a TMobile MDA Pro and i have purchased an in car charger so that I can use it with TomTom satnav unit, slight problem, unit does not charge when in the car. Bizarre, as when I use the standard USB Charge & Sync cable with PC happily syncs and charges with no issues. Anyone any ideas, does there have to be a specific setting on the unit to enable it to accept charge via the cigarette socket in car?
Many thanks
I found that to charge the universal, pins 4 and 5 in the mini USB plug need to get joined together - by default pin 5 is not connected to anything (well, wasn't in the cable I had). I've made that modification, and am powering a couple of devices of of a 2 port hub in the car.
Cheers,
Steve
Hi, sounds like a problem I am having and meaning to ask about.
I've got a USB cigy lighter adapter and tried plugging in the sync lead to provide power when it's in the car. So if I have my Exec in standby the charge light will come on (I think it charges sitting on the today screen, but not to sure) but as soon as I fire up tomtom the charging light goes off....
Does this sound like your problem, or are you not charging at all?
I'm interested in finding out what I need to charge the Exec while it's running tomtom? Anyone have any ideas?
Cheers
Matt
I'm pretty certain that I didn't get a charge light at all with my cable until I modified it, then it works, as expected, including in TomTom.
To confirm what I've got is:
- A Ciggy to USB socket adapter
- A two port hub plugged into the adapter
- Modified cable into the hub (along with an unmodified cable connected to my BT-77 GPS unit).
Plugging the cable (prior to modification) directly into the adapter, rather than the hub, didn't work either. The Brodit all-in-one adapter/cable worked fine (and I still have it intact, but not in use), but if memory serve, pins 4 & 5 appear to be connected. I used a multi-meter to try and find out why that one worked, and my combination didn't.
All of this stuff is wired in behind the centre console, so I've not got any unsightly wires, or anything.
Cheers,
Steve.
I think you need a car charger that can output 1000mA to charge the Universal. Same requirement also for an AC charger. 1000mA is what's important. Cheers
Hi, We have had quite a few customers with this issue, we advised and they have opted for the brodit active mounts which have the inbuilt cig chargers and it has cured the problem, or for the neater solution they went for the Molex hardwired versions to stash the cables behind the dash area,
The codes are: 968649 for the cig charger version or 971649 for the Molex hardwired version, http://www.dsldevelopments.com/brodit/holder/T-Mobile+MDA Pro-Brodit-Holder.asp
Hope that helps, drop me a line if you need any advice,

Found 1A 5V car adapter
this is the only place I found off ebay that has a 1A car adapter
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CAR-CIGAR-CIG...4QQihZ006QQcategoryZ15329QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
It works fine on my MDA Pro, just need to plug it in while it is off for it to start charging.. if turned on, then pluged in, then it won't start charging.
I even have an 800mA adapter, but that doesn't help the MDA Pro, it needs more power!

Hi there Bryson
The items you quoted are actually the charger and the holder for the PDA. I also notice from the link you provided that there are 2 cig chargers (items codes 942625 and 942650). Can I know what are the differences between these 2 models and would either of this chargers charge the Universal while it is running a navigation software such as TomTom or Garmin Que?
Also, do you ship to Singapore?
I would like to get a car charger that works with the O2 Exec when I am running navigational programs such as Garmin Que and TomTom. I have tried more than 5 chargers but no luck thus far.
If anyone has any to recommend, do let me know. I am located in Singapore.
i use my car charger from my gps that is the Holux 236, the only think i have to do so that it starts charging is turn it off on the button and the led will change to orange, i have tried one other charger that has a usb plug and it worked fine ! So has long as it has a usb plug you'll be alright and if you do not find one look for the Motorola car plugs that it will probably work on Uni since it has a mini usb plug
The charger from M3000 works fine with my Uni
And the Motorola Mini-USB chargers doesn't work...
Hi, I found that this issue is connected with proper usb cable not with charger itself (usb mini have 5 connector but in some cables only 4 are connected and in some other cables all 5 are connected and so are the difference). I was also trying many chargers and no luck. But I ve tryied charger with other cable and suddenly all chargers start charging my jasjar.
Anyway, the bad thing is it stops whitout any reason so now charging jasjar in my car is a real mystery for me.
regards,
Piotr
Be careful if buying one with a double USB output - I bought a few different models hoping to power both Exec and the Holux GPSlim-236, but all failed. They would power the Exec, but as soon as the Holux was connected, it would always cause the Exec to continually reboot - fortunately "soft". Make sure the supplier will take them back if it doesn't work.
Try a car charger with a USB socket on the end that takes a separate Sync/Charge cable.
The problem is, the exec is very power hungry, especially when the batt is dead !! you need a high current charger at least 1A (1 amp) the charger used with the blackberry (I forget which model) is suitable as is the genuine exec charger obviously.
use O2 Atom car charge
O2 Atom car charge will work with O2 Exec as well as A/C charger from Atom
Exec/SPV car charger...
Got an o2 branded one today for the Exec/Mini - works like a charm (Charges my SPV and runs Tt at the same time) but cost me £14.99 for the privelage!
could you post a link to the website? I would love to purchase one but am currently located in Singapore and so far all the charges don't seem to work for me.

Car Charger for UNI - how to make working
Hi All!
I've also tryed 2 diferent car chargers and 1 USB Pluggable Car Charger (some noname chineese 3-rd party) with 3 diferent cables, and one 3-rd party AC Power Charger. They ALL worked strange.
I can confirm that to make them all work I should:
1. Switch off the Universal;
2. Plug in the chgrer in to Universal;
3. Wait until the Red Light on.
Now I may turn the Universal On, and see the "Charging" battery status.
The reason and how to fix:
As you may see I used different adapters. All they have from 0.5 to 1.0A output circuit. But, the USB ports I used with my laptops have only 0.5A output and always start charging the Universal.
So, I dont think the output power is the reason.
The most likely - it is the "5-th pin" issue, which is mentioned above here. Can somebody provide information about power connection for the Universal?
It seems the solution is about to interconnect/short circuit 2 wires in the car adapter' cable to make the Universal charging in a usual way with any of my (your) "non-working" car adapters.
Also, I've noticed, that in a case the battery level around 30% and I plug in the "non working adapter" and no red light and system not is in the "Charging" state -- the battery is charging anyway!
Also, let me remind you about another issue that the Universal have: Active Sync (older versions) would not sync (USB Device not recognized error) if you plug in the Universal if the power is On.
To workaround that you have to switch off the Universal, plug the cable and after that you could successfully sync. The same symptoms? May be the same reason?
I would advice anybody not to mess with interconnections in USB, I mean stop soldering and checking because its shortest road to bricking Your precious jasjar. It can be done with proper cable and you have to find the right one ;-)
Secondly - I found that jasjar Rom is also responsible for charging issues. As I stated earlier I finally found good usb cable but later on I lost an ability to charge Uni. in the car. After upgrading to the Aku3.2 rom it start to charge immidiatelly. Same charger and cable - one time it charge, second time it dont. So additionally to cable theres something with soft with preventing Uni. from charging.
man why is it such a complicated issue to get the universal to charge? and it seems that this charging problem only happens to the universal and not any other device, am i right?

YESSS! I Have upgraded to on of that Aku3.2 recently! May be it is the reason! But, my original Power adapter still charges my Uni so does the USB conndction to the laptop...
To ALL: Could you please confirm that you can use third-party adapters with the older ROMs?
hopefully we can get some updates soon.
Are all chargers alike?
Are all chargers the same? I would think that the USB power rating would be the same. So, I should be able to charge the Jasjar using a charger for a Motorola RAZR (if I weren't so afraid of blowing up the Jasjar)
Hi,
I recently bought a car charger (actually, it's a 3-in-1 kit, with USB-2-miniUSB cable, plug-in car charger, and travel charger). This set seems not to work with my TyTn, but work perfectly with other HTC pda's - Touch, Cruise etc. However, that cable works nicely when plugged to PC.
Anyone have a clue? Maybe, I should change some power management settings in the TyTN?
Thanx
Hi,
I have the same problem.
Sometimes is charging O.K. (when the screen is off and Hermes is in Standby). But if I have a Phone Call, or if I use the car navigation, charging won´t work.
(Everythink was O.K. with WM5, I think, but WM6 and WM6.1 has this problem on my Hermes - I tried many ROMs, now I use CRCs PHKv12r9, Radio 1.47.30.10)
Get an inverter from Maplins http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=48723&criteria=inverter&doy=3m4 for £19.99 you can then use your home charger...
Ah OK scratch that idea I didn't look at the flags before posting...
I have one, but the question is, why car charger won´t work.
I use the inverter with everything up to 300W without any problems.
I dont understand WHY people have this problem.... I bought a CHEAP little car charger that allows me to use a usb cable. I plug in, leave for a minute or so and it starts charging. Make/ recieve calls, use GPS software and never have a problem. I would say that the charger was made good BUT its a generic "made in china" charger.... Must've been BLOODY LUCKY to find it...
I had this problem with mine, sometimes it would charge, other times it would need to be restarted before picking up the charger? This was using the same sort of charger that plugged into the lighter socket, then the USB-to-MiniUSB plugged into the charger.
I started using a spare charger for a TomTom One which worked perfectly.
In fact, I have 2 car chargers to which I plug USB-mini cable, both not working. I just wonder why... Can it be hardware or software problem? I suspect you all use WM6.... OK with WM5?
I can't find the post now, but there have been a couple of discussions about the charging issues with the TyTN. My TyTN is very picky about the charging cable. It has something to do with a requirement that the data pin in the USB cable either be connected to something live(like a computer) or that the data pin be jumpered to the ground pin.
I have tried a number of charging solutions and keep going back to the AT&T store for a charger that works. I have an external battery for my laptop from Battery Geek, Inc that has both a USB port on it and a mini USB charging cable. Both don't work with my TyTN but work with my wife's Wizard. Actually they work with my TyTN about 2% of the time, just enough to make me think it is going to work.
Someplace back in the archives I've seen a description of how to modify a USB charging cable to work with the TyTN, but I can't find it right now.

The charger for my Tilt just broke and I need a new Charger. I have two chargers left over from my Blackberry days, The mini usb will fit my Tilt. Will it work ? Or for some reason will it short my battery/phone.

Have a BB charger working just fine on myTrinity.
any miniusb connector which follow the miniusb std will work
be it connected any usb pc cable or any charger
if it don't follow the usb std as in use higher volts then 5
or don't use the same pins for power and groud as spc'd in the miniusb
std
it could break the device
but few would break that std as lawsuits would likely follow

I decided to take a chance that trying the Motorola charger would not toast anything, I plugged it in, the amber light went on, but no charging icon and no charge.
I am currently using a mini USB cable and charging from the computer, but that requires leaving the computer on all nite, which as we are trying to be green, wastes more electricity than a simple charger.
Possibly the Motorola charger isn't pushing enough current to charge.
My blackberry charger is working fine, but my sprint isn't so good!
So I bought a car usb charger that claimed it was rated at 1 amp. Using both my blackberry and HTC oem usb cables it will only show up as a USB charger (500ma).
This is not exactly enough to charge the phone while using 3g, gps, full screen brightness, etc. I'm looking for a good confirmed 1 amp hardwire (not using a usb cable) car charger and home charger. I used my sisters Samsung charger (rated at 700ma) and it charged it quicker than with the OEM htc charger.
And I would like to try and get ones that are confirmed to show up as fully charging the phone. I would appreciate some insight

I went through a few different car chargers, so I can help you out here. I bought the Belkin car charger recommended here in another thread, low profile and rated at 1A, but my phone only recognized it as USB and charging was fairly slow, extended road trips using video recording and navigation while plugged in would drain my battery over time.
I used my friend's palm pre home charger and it worked very well, so I went on to Amazon and bought the "palm vehicle charger". The one I got in the mail (from Park Deals) was DOA, wouldn't turn on at all (I emailed Park Deals and they sent me a new replacement free of charge, didn't even have me ship back the defective one). I called the local radio shacks and found one in stock at $9.99 (radio shack isn't carrying palm anymore, so the accessories are on closeout but hard to find in stock). Works like a charm, the phone recognizes as AC charging, the phone still charges while running navi or recording video.
My friend got a cheapo car kit on ebay, came with rubberized case, mount that fits the evo with the same case on, and a cheap unlabeled car charger with a bungie type cord. I tried this on my phone, my evo recognizes it as AC also, so I assume it would charge well if it's rated at 1A. I've seen several other cheapo car chargers rated at 1A as well.
Another thread here on XDA says that if you modify your charger/cable by altering the middle data pins you can get the phone to believe the usb port is plugged into the wall and draw full current from the charger. I tried covering the two middle pins with a piece of paper and plugging it in, but this didn't work for me. The other methods involved shorting the two data pins together, I didn't really want to waste a cable or mess up a charger and potentially my phone so I just bought a different charger. Another thread mentioned buying a specific rocketfish usb cable had a similar effect.

That was me on both accounts. Love my rocket fish cable. Bought the 12v/usb converter for the car and whether or not i use the pc or car to charge, it shows as ac charger on the phone. I use this cable on all my pc's as well as the usb outlet in my vehicle.
This is the charger that I bought from amazon. It shows up as charging from AC (instead of USB) charging. It's available for Amazon Prime for under $6:

From this ebay listing it looks like the AC-6U is only a ~600ma charger:

I think ill spend the extra few bucks on the 1200ma charger, I don't think ill have any problems (and i have the best buy warranty also so I'm not too worried).

How fast does it charge?
One the 2.1 amp port, the Evo only charges at 1 amp. The Evo doesn't charge any faster with this charger than any other 1 amp charger.

Gotcha, thanks for the info.
I just ordered a Rocketfish cable. We'll see how that works.
Would be nice if they made a Y-cable to get 1amp from 2 USB ports in a PC. I mean, I know they MAKE cables like this but I read somewhere that HTC phones were designed to still only charge at 500mAh even with one of those.
Dunno.
It depends on what you're using as a charging source. When usb charging on my home pc or car, it's AC charging at 1 amp.. But if I'm charging with my Energizer external battery, it's only USB charging at 0.5 amp. This is using the same usb cable.
iGo
Would anyone happen to know what an iGo tip (A97) delivers? I am trying to rig up a custom solution that is hard-wired, but uses iGo tips so I don't have to use the cigarette lighter plug and I have the flexibility at the corner of my windshield to swap tips for different devices.
Right now, I have a 4-port USB hub installed under the dash that is 12v powered. I then use a proprietary iGo cable that uses a standard PC style USB connector on one end and then terminates into an iGo tip connector at the other end. That USB cable runs up to the corner of the windshield so I can swap tips at will.
If I use the iGo A97 tip on their cigarette lighter adapter, it seems to charge, but I am not sure at what rate. If I try to use the A97 tip on the USB hub, it charges for about 2 seconds, and then the light goes out. The Evo does not seem to like the custom arrangement, yet all my other micro usb devices do not seem to have any issues and charge just fine...
Thanks,
-Rob
I can attest to the Moto 513 working fine - it has served me very well on my Evo and the Treo Pro before it.
Unfortunately it is a big ass charger though - wish there was a good micro option.
How do u determine how much power its actually charging at or if its not using the full 1amp rating?
