Disable the Screen From Lighting Up - HTC Excalibur

Hello All,
Like most, I am loving my Dash and getting to know it very well. I am wondering if anybody has looked into stopping the screen from lighting up every time a message is received. It seems to me that this is a waste of battery power. I leave my Dash on all of the time and would like to maximize battery life.
Any help appreciated.
Regards,
Aaron J. Wood

damn you must get a ton of messages or be running something that is eatting battery. I can run mine for about a day and a half with average use. now if i run OctroTalk barly a day because it eats battery.

Not sure if thats possible, unless there is a way to turn off the display completely... Have you tried key-locking the phone and seeing if it still illuminates when you receive an sms?

Battery Life

Hello I have a stock Touch pro 2 NL and the battery life is what you can say not great. I have heard that there is a updated GSM-radio rom. I wish to install that on my TP2 but I want to make a backup of the roms first. So a tutorial would be nice.
Can anyone help me with this?
Thank you
C'moon...
Hi Jack
...TP2 has great endurance. I'm sure about that, I have one
If you have lousy 3g coverage, it will suck the battery empty very fast. Here's the easy solution you can try. Data connection will be disconnected automatically in 60 seconds when the phone is closed by this registry tweak.

So all that there is to do is just install it? Or have I to make a modification to the registry
Thanks
Yep, the cab file will modify the registry for you.
Handy little cabs
thank you for your quick response
Ok there is some improvement but now it is so that I must charge my phone once every 1.5 days. I heard from a frend of mine that he installed a better radio rom for his HTC and needs to charge his phone every 4 days.
Can somebody help me with this question?
It all depends on how you use your phone...
I have had days where I've used wifi a fair bit, been messing about with the phone (so the backlight has been on a lot and the processor has been used a lot), made lots of calls received and sent texts etc. THe phone at the end of the day has about 10-15% battery.
Others, I've hardly used the phone, only received and sent a few calls/texts, and end of the day it's at about 75% full.
Your friend probably only used his phone a little amount in that time, whereas you are using it a lot! That would be the reason. Also, there is the fact of the apps running in the background. If you have some which consume a lot of power (because it's always running and has memory leaks etc), then it will drain the battery quicker

This can't be right

I use my phone for calls, texting and push email a lot. At the end of my average day I would have 40 to 60%. This week I was on vacation and I shut off my push email and I wanted to see how long my battery would last, I used the phone only a little and only a couple of text messages, I got four days before the low battery message came on.
poor battery life
Hi guys,
I've had my tp2 for two weeks now, and I'm lucky if I get 12 hours out of it before the battery life, four if I use the media player for more than 15 mins. Perhaps I've got a dicky battery??
How to treat your battery again?? to get the most out of it..?
Here also many problems with battery life.
Even when no data connection and the device always off it drains the battery quickly.
Strangely enough, even when the device is turned off (the screen is blank) it sometime is (very) warm, so it's evidently using a lot of power.
How can I check if certain programs are running even when the device is supposed to be off? And can I measure the battery drain under several conditions?

You have a task manager right on the homescreen (top right). That'll tell you your running programs. Tapping the "X" button within programs only minimizes them. Tapping and holding X however, DOES close them. Maybe you've been racking up lots of running programs.
All I have to say about batter life...It beats the Pre, hands down.

Didn't notice an automatically 60 seconds disconnect after I installed the cab.
Help. Can't Uninstall
Tried this out and it was always turning off my wireless even whena ctively using it. removed it using remove programs, but it is still turning off my wireless.
ive had my tp2 for about 3 weeks and ive noticed the more ive charged the device the better the battery has become, its like anything else, charge the battery a few times and your onto a winner, its not actually that bad but a second battery aint exactly expensive

Normally I use Wisbar, so all tasks are closed. Also I searched in task manager, but nothing shows up.
I even closed Wisbar (after I closed all other programs) and Wisbar Desktop, but it still drains the battery.
Also I notice that sometimes the screen does not come up when I press the power button or when the device slides open. (I do hear the slide open sound btw)
Maybe this is connected to the draining of the battery?

Yeah, my battery life blows as well. After one day of normal usage (calls, texts, etc), it usually drops to 30-40 by the end of the day. I'm going to try the cab and see if that makes a difference. I think my 3g coverage is ****ty though....seems to rarely connect to it.
Edit: I also tried WMLongLife with this and it already seems to help. I have it auto select 2g when the phone is not in use.
Edit: With both of these loaded, my battery life has increased dramatically. I now end up with around 55-65 percent by the end of the day.
I didn't notice any difference from installing the cab.

That's GOOD battery life. Try living with the Palm Pre. You wouldn't even last a day of battery.

How is your battery life?

I was wondering what others are experiencing as far as battery life on their TP2 or other variants?
My experience so far has been very disappointing. As soon as I unplugged my device and sent one text message it went down to 95% and watched it drop to 94% shortly after. 20 minutes later I'm down to 90%. I do have some things running in the background; Email (Outlook Exchange, 2 Gmail accounts that check for mail every 2 hours) and palringo mostly but that's it. I've even turned off 3G with no help. Has anybody experienced this as well or do I just have a bum battery? Please shed some light on this for me. Thanks in advance.
I sync with various sources every 15min via 3G, definitely have a bum battery.
I have the Tilt 2 and, coming from the Tilt, have been very pleased. Worked a night last night and removed the phone from charge at ~11pm. Used internet for a total of about 30 minutes and a few various apps for a short time. Used net again in browser for another 30 minutes this morning. Not a significant amount of use but right now, at 1:30pm, I am at 80% charge (standard battery meter). My Tilt would be probably 30% by now or worse. The net really seems to suck the life out of it.
I would think you have a battery issue unless you're using different battery software. It might not be reporting correctly. Either way, something's up. Good luck!
I have an unbranded Touch Pro2 and have been very pleased with the battery life on my device, it's much better than any other similar device I've had before.
I tend to leave the phone enabled for about 12 hours per day and have the device auto collect emails hourly. I have WiFi enabled all the time and frequently use the device for email, web browsing, RSS feeds etc.
Even when I've been using the device a lot I tend to get about 3-4 days' use before the battery gets low. Even then it's probably no lower than 20% so I could probably carry on a bit longer if I wanted.
I'm using a Tilt 2 and so far the battery experience has been excellent. Its so much better than the Fuze (which would nearly be dead before dinner time).
I have Outlook set to sync every 60 minutes, Windows Live set to sync every 30 minutes, and I'm a heavy texter. I also like to play with the applications when I'm bored (like Google Maps w/GPS). So I use the phone quite a bit throughout the day.
It does sound like you either have a defective battery or as someone mentioned, your battery software isn't reporting correct battery levels.
Battery Life
I have an unbranded TP2 and use it mostly just for the phone and a little bit of WiFi and one sync a day. Also play games and watch movies. The phone is unmodified and I can watch a full length movie (from the storage card) and be down only one bar on the battery. I could probably watch two full length movies without any problem. Normally I top my battery off every two days, but almost never go lower than one bar down.

Palringo could be it...
Check background processes and see if there's anything that's cpu-intensive

Try it without Palringo. From my experience with the Tilt and the Fuze it is a battery killer.
The first 2-3 days I had my Tilt2, the battery seemed to drain really fast. I even charged it up before using it like the manual said to. By the end of each day, the battery was at or below 50% which really surprised me since my Blackjack 2 would last about 3 days on a charge.
After religiously plugging it in every night when I go to bed, the battery life seems to have stabilized. I haven't done any tweaks, hacks, or ROMs other than hide a few TouchFLO screens that I won't be using. I have bluetooth, 3G, and push email enabled.
So, give it a few days and it might get better. I think it might be the battery driver trying to equalize itself or something. If you don't see an improvement, maybe a warranty exchange is in order?
Had a sprint TP2 and I was lucky if it wasn't shot by 9pm everyday. Have a tilt2 now and I'm getting about 2 days out of it.
EDIT: Not a heavy user so YMMV.
Much better than my Fuze. I could easily go two days with it. My Fuze was out of juice at the end of one day.
i've had the touch, touch pro and now using touch pro 2... i'm by far pleased and impressed by tp2... plus there is an app that somehow controls the battery life, a friend hooked me up with it... look it up
Battery life isn't bad for me. I think it a little better than my Kaiser (original Tilt).
I've traditionally done battery usage measurements for giggles, done it on my last few phones, and so far my measurements on the Tilt 2 are equivalent to the Tilt I replaced.
Backlight on 100% is a little higher, I suspect the backlight itself is brighter. The idle and standby is the same, battery usage with Flexmail online (2 online imap mailboxes) is the same, I believe the GPS was a little lower but I haven't done much testing with it yet, not significantly different.
I think it's just the battery conditioning period, plus there's the New Toy battery syndrome. Batteries tend to get worn down faster when the device is a New Toy.
not as good as it should be
I don't have much going on in this phone, it does hourly look up the emails, but by the end of a day when I rarely get or make calls, the battery is low and needs recharging. Very surprised, was expecting the two-three days' charge others above had mentioned.
Though it's not fantastic, it's a whole lot better than my Tilt, so it seems very good in comparison. If you have bad battery life, try closing CPU intensive background services, and using Advanced config, set an inactivity timeout to disconnect from HSPA/GSM (I use 5 minutes of inactivity). Also, enable most if not all of the power saving features in advanced config. Reboot, and you'll find that your battery should last longer. Also, you might want to check your radio version, as there are definately more battery intensive ones (like my current one).
I figured I'd tack onto this thread. I just got my Tilt 2 and I'm curious about battery conditioning. Is there some way that I should condition my battery during my first period of use?
thanks!
taz
tp2 battery is one the best...if you need longer life get another battery..dont forget this is a mini pc
I'm not really having any problems with the battery. I was just wondering if there was something specific I could do with the new phone to condition the battery out of the box to make it perform at peak efficiency. I thought I read somewhere that you should fully charge and then fully drain the battery several times when you first use the phone before ever "topping it off"...
replaced mine
the battery I got in Oct 09 with the TMo TP2 was getting a full charge, then without doing much of anything but one call or one note in a 6 hr period, the battery was already at the red level of <=10%.
Called TMo about this back in Nov, then again in early January they agreed and sent a new battery. The new one is doing much much better at holding the charge. I don't know what the issue was, but that they replaced it without much question has me believing there was an upgrade in the battery technology.

[Q] Awful battery life. Should I replace my phone?

As I posted in another thread:
I am lucky to even get 12 hours with minimal use. No calls, just some texting and maybe browsing my bank website. Screen is always the killer for me, even on 20% brightness. If I go lower the screen actually flickers.
I bought the red HTC Chichitech batteries and they didn't help me at all.
Tried overclocking module, didn't change much.
The only app that ever shows any significant battery use (over 5%) is Maps, when I use maps.

I am rooted, S-OFF, using the Sense Modaco ROM. Battery usage was no better with the Stock Bell Rom before rooting or S-OFF.
My main concern is the screen flickering at low brightness. it's as if it's unable to decide on a specific level of brightness and makes me question if it's actually saving any power.
I set my phone to Auto brightness and I am going to see if that is actually worse of if it's on par with 20%.
Ugh - just realized there is another thread pretty much all about this. I thought it was a different issue. Still, does anyone know if there is a better batch of phones or something? I have a FutureShop warranty so it'd be easy enough for me to replace if it will actually provide a solution
No-one has posted anything, to my knowledge, about a different batch of phones having better battery life. I would check out the other threads about battery life (including those on the G2 side too) and see if you can get yours to last better. But it could just be something faulty on your phone/battery.
Auto-brightness would make it even worse..because there is some type of bug or something that isn't making it function like it should. I was also getting terrible battery life until I followed some of these steps: http://www.goodandevo.net/2010/05/20-tips-to-improve-htc-evo-4g-battery-life.html
Biggest killers are any widgets that are constantly updating..or facebook/twitter apps that are constantly updating. As well..i recommend SetCPU to underclock your phone when your screen is turned off. This should also help with conserving battery life along with some of the steps provided in that link.

The reason I want to try auto or higher brightness is to see if lowering it was actually saving me any battery life. I am curious if there's a driver or display issues that causes it to use the same amount regardless of the setting. So far I don't seem to be running out any faster @ auto than I was at 20%, but it hasn't been a long enough time to tell for sure.
Also I am unable to do the battery tip for the evo because once I turn off the phone and go to charge it again, it's instantly green. But I am going to try it anyway even though it's green.
Since writing the first post I used the OC module to get my phone to 1.2ghz. I have SetCPU set to run on boot with the onDemand setting. I have a profile that says to slow the CPU when the screen is off. From what I've read it doesn't make a ton of difference with this particular phone, but we'll see...

Yep, that's what I found too, when you try and charge it thinks it's already charged and goes green straight away again. But as you said, worth a try.
I just wanted to report back and say that I had my phone replaced. So far so good:
- No screen flicker issue at low brightness
- Battery has lasted nearly 20 hours with moderate-heavy use (played NFS Shift, setup basically everything on the phone after rooting, installed all my apps, backups, flashed some roms, 20+ texts, 3-4 short calls, showing people random apps.)
If it's not all in my head then this is definitely much better now!
Curious. It seems that everyone who reports the screen flickering problem has poor battery life.
Defective displays?
I feel my battery life is pretty bad as well. I've unplugged the phone this morning at 7 AM. Now it's 2 PM, and I'm at 37%. In between, the only things I've done are: send/receive a few emails and chat on gtalk. Brightness is at 40%, animations are turned off, wifi and gps location off. Using latest Cyanogenmod (6.1.1) and have no screen flicker issues
Edit: 17 minutes later, it's now at 27%
How long have you had the phone for?
Initially the first few days I got the phone, battery life was really bad, could drain in a few hours.
After a week or two of use, I now have reasonable battery life, the phone can last all day with light usage and still have lots of juice left. Actually I think if you make a few calls and a few txts, battery could last 2 days. If you play with it, one day for sure but you need to plug in over night.
(if you're talking to me) It's quite new, just picked it up on Friday actually. Also I've kept on researching, and it seems that poor coverage (like I have at work, from 7 til 3) tends to drain the battery even more, since the phone keeps switching between HSPA, 3G, etc.
I had my first one for about a month at least. This replacement was from Saturday.
Today I've had my phone unplugged since 8am, it's 5:30pm and I have 45% battery left, but the screen is the #2 user. Standby is #1 @ 40% of my battery usage, due to over 4 hours of time without a signal. The screen is only 24% and has been on for 48 minutes. Voice calls is #3 at 23% battery usage, with 23mins of calling.
My other phone would have died by now.
Also I spent an hour of streaming bluetooth audio to my car. Bluetooth doesn't even register on the battery usage. I've never seen it use more than 2% and it's always on. I am not sure why people say it uses a lot.
Just want to share my experience.
I too had poor battery life. Stock Bell ROM. Got to 3:00 pm and it used to die. Use this for work. Pushing data all day from Exchange server, bluetooth on all day because I'm in and out of the car, talk on average 30 minutes per day, texting, surfing, tethering, blah blah. Believe it or not, my old Omnia II would get me thru the day no problem.
I was also tempted to return it. But I decided to try a few things. Installed Set CPU and a task killer at the same time. Shut down as many tasks as possible on start up. Widgets and accounts, except Exchange-push, run and sync every hour. I get about 40% battery by dinner. I am happy now .
I'm quite happy with my Desire Z's battery life, It lasts for about 36 hours with moderate use. I have Juicedefender and Ultimatejuice installed, data or wifi are opened only when an app needs data connection, this increased my battery life by 10 hours or sth like that. Nice app.
I had terrible battery life until I went overseas. It is a stock Bell ROM, but I arrived in Spain Monday and am using a Spanish SIM card.
My battery life has increased from 14 hours with Bell's 3G signal to my current 27 hours and 35% remaining battery using GSM and WiFi always on. Funny thing is that no matter where I am it says the screen is by far my biggest power drain.
Where did you buy your Desire Z and how did you get it replaced? I'm with Bell and they would take mine to send out for "repair" but not sure if that will do anything. This will take 3-6 weeks apparently and I'm not sure if they it is worth it.
I'm running 10 hours with that I consider fair usage (few calls, text, map/gsp, and facebook.) My display is the highest battery usage at 60% and on for about 1:45h. I'm very disappointed.
Hey,
it's the same with my G2.
Max 24h.
I've standard ROM installed.
No WiFi.
Brightness to about 30%.
Juice Defender is installed and I'm surfing and just the regular stuff, but even if it's just in standby, it's taking a lot of power (display takes most)
Best!

I bought mine at FutureShop since I didn't think Bell would let me without buying at least a month of service (or being an existing customer). I also purchased FutureShop's extended warranty which is how I was able to get it swapped for a new one so quickly.
I use the extended battery for the evo. Lasts about 1.5 days with ass loads of use. Just have to trim the plastic edges a bit.

I have a couple of those red chichitech batteries but I wasn't able to notice any improvement with the problem phone.
My Desire Z also has a flickering screen at lowest brightness, and with moderate use it dies after about 12 hours max. Even on lowest brightness the screen ueses 59% battery. I rarely manage to make it through the day without having to charge the phone. Im on stock ROM with latest OTA (1.72) btw.
Gonna have it replaced next week just cause of the flickering screen. Has anyone tried the 1700mAH battery from seidio?

Do you leave always on display/clock on?

Do you guys leave always on display on? Should i leave it off the save battery?
I turned mine off. Kinda pointless IMO.
I don't think it is a substantial hit. It turns off when in a pocket.

Only you can decide what amount of screen on time you want and what gets sacrifices to get there. I'm easily getting through the day without turning it off and I like having the information. If you like it and you're getting the battery life you want by all means leave it running. Shiny new toys would just be new toys without the shiny.
I have it on from 6am to 10pm then off while I sleep. I find it useful at times during the day.

I have it on, not a great batt drain, it loolks awesome, thknk about this, You want a great device, full of functions, real unique charateristics, , so? why all rhe compñaints about battery life? if so concened boit batt life, go get a chimese unbranded set
I turned mine off the day I got it. Reason for that since it uses AMOLED screen which means over time you'll get burn in (actually it's really burn out) which can't be fixed. From what I understand it moves slightly to prevent that. Still why chance it?
I have mine on all the time, but honestly I find it can be distracting often. I have gotten to the point of NOT wanting my phone to be bothering me 24/7, and have found actually turning it off for days at a time is a good thing. But that's kind of a different point... fact is, the AOD is something that attracts the eye and attention, and I find myself turning my phone face down or away from me so that I am not constantly looking at the AOD. Not the phone's or AOD fault, just how this works. It is nice to have the option of AOD and I don't think it effects the battery life much.
Mine is only off at night because I like to sleep in the dark. All day long it's super handy to be able to glance down at the phone to see the time and other info, plus it looks cool.
I keep it on 24/7. The battery consumption is too minimal for me to loose the information it provides if I were to disable it. As long as my device can last two days on a single charge I'm happy.
under what I would class reasonable use I'm getting from 6am till midnight and still having 40%+ of battery so can't really complain as it's not running the battery down enough to the point where I would want to save battery.
Love this feature and never turn it off. Makes a great night clock.

Sadly i can't see an option to. I would love the ability to turn it down a bit as well
It can auto-off AOD when in the pocket or facing down.

[A520F] Battery problems

Hi guys!
I have a serious problem with a used A5 (2017) I got from some friends. The battery life is abysmal. I already changed the battery and it didn't change anything.
It is running on Android 8 Oreo. The most serious problem, I think, is that the phone even discharges when it's powered off. I tried using the latest hadesrom, but it didn't changed a thing. Lifetime is around 12hours, doesn't matter if I run some apps or just let it lie around in standby. I tried factory rests and some battery saving apps... nothing works. Is there any way to get better battery life? Thanks in advance!

You could try the naptime app. But I don't think my battery life is any better than yours.
The a5 2017 has a famously good battery life.
I am not a heavy user - make and get few calls and mainly use it for receiving emails and a few texts plus a bit of web browsing.
Occasionally listening to podcasts.
3 days battery life is easy for me - reckon I could get 5 days if I just left it sitting quietly.
If it's going flat quickly even when switched off, it sounds like a fault somewhere.
Don't know what else to tell you.

I never tried letting it sit, but if I just left mine alone it would last for days too. But if I am gaming on it, it will go down to around 50 percent at noon.
wow - 3 days life battery!! I can hardly get to 2 days, without heavy us - but I would never try to change the battery -> sounds too complicated
One thing that is worth looking at is the Always on Display (AOD).
I found it sucks a lot of power despite the claims that it 'doesnt use much'. It seemed to use around 1% an hour - I guess thats around a quarter of your battery in a day. So unless you find it useful either turn it off - or set it on a schedule for when you actually want it to be on.
Battery life is always sujective and depends on what your phone is doing - gaming will burn through a battery like nothing else.
The OP said the battery drains even when the phone is switched off - That sounds like a hardware fault. The battery will gradually drop when switched off - but it should take months for a healthy battery to drop much if the phone is switched off.

1 percent an hour doesn't matter to me lol. I am a heavy user so I charge every day anyway.
