Upgrading to WM6 Crossbow, (Please help me, i'm a total noob!) - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

Hey folks!
Just registered to the XDA-developers and my first post is here
I got an extremely rare windows mobile 5 pda-phone BenQ-Siemens P51 to my hands from my friend, whos father worked in Siemens during the BenQ-Siemens bankrupt.
Cool phone, bit too big tho, pretty cool functions, GPS, 1,3 mpx camera etc... But...
ITS ALL IN TAIWANESE LANGUAGE! Some kind of beta-prototype which works perfectly but splash screen is "Evaluation Only" . I don't think that this affects any way to the performance.
So i kindly ask you for advice:
Is it possible to upgrade this brilliant phone to new OS, English version of the crossbow beta. I've downloaded crossbow, tried to patch it with a program called ROMUpgradeUt.exe, but the upgrade doesn't end successfully. An error message appears to the screen, think it was #101 or #201. Im having problems sometimes with activesync when the phone is recognized as 'usb device' and active sync doesnt recognize it then. Some other times when i boot with usb in the P51, active sync pairs it and ican syncronize.
I Hope that somebody could kindly help me, since im not in the mood for throwing away hardware this expensive. I just want to get rid of the taiwanese language and start using this as a PHONE.
So please, if possible could give me specific instructions how to upgrade OS to different language.
Cheers and thanks in advance (sorry for my poor english!)

PLS ANY1 HELP ME OUT. 2 DAYS WITH QTEK9090 AND THIS ISSUES!!

Hello there,
there are 2 big problems i have found with my Qtek 9090 since i bought it about 3 days. Its kinda soon to find out this big bugs, so i would like to know is these are general people issues or they are happening only to myself...
1.- somehow after some standby time, i can't hear neither do the caller hear what im saying tru a conversation. This is solved by soft reset the device... also founded in this forum that by enabling bluetooth all time, this issue can be ignored and the phone works quite well... (stable)
2.- when im connected to GPRS, speak about MSN, IE or Mail .. and i make a call (don't iven make the call during 5 seconds) i imediately lost the GPRS connection and wont be able to reconnect to it ... i always receive an error saying " unknown error found ... try to reset the device as the owner manual indicates .. something like this... "
in fact i have to soft reset each time to get GPRS working again.. and im really sad by doing this all the time ... but i dont know if anyone else has this problem, please let me know any information that could be helpfull, i realy apreciate.
Thanks in advance.

So we can bring on WM6 - but why?

Hi all
I just got myself sent a Hermes the other day and I was looking around here, my favourite XDA resource, for nifty things I could do with it. One thing that seems to be all the rage is upgrading to WM6. Now, I'm all in favour of upgrading and the amount of information and material here is, well, staggering. Overwhelming even. But, for all I read, I miss one critical thing: why do we upgrade to WM6? What does it give us that WM5 doesn't?
All I see, at the moment, is a swankier interface and a faster operation. But neither of those are big sellers in themselves and don't justify the bricking and incompatibility risks. So, what's the big appeal that I've missed? I guess I'm looking for an excuse to do this
Lastly, as I mentioned, there's almost too much information about all this. i can follow the guides and tools for installation but one thing will vex me if I was to upgrade - and that's which ROM to use. Now I'm certain every one of you has a favourite and so I'm not looking for a definitive recommendation, but what the hot ones that I should look into at the moment? As I see it, the "XDA Live" and "Black" see pretty popular..
Cheers!
Three reasons for me.
1. TomTom doesn't occassionally freeze
2. Easier to set as a modem
3. More responsive menus, button presses, etc
By the way WM6 is more like WM5 second edition rather than a brand new system.

Pretty much says it all. I never soft reset anymore. More memory, faster than WM5, better tweaks, and has some things WM5 didn't cooked in to the ROM. As for the risk of bricking, that's an extremely low risk, very minimal actually, if you follow the guide and wiki.
and html email is not to be sneezed at.
Because we can!
Mobile Office 2k7 can read o2k7 native formats. You will never see this on WM5 unless some imgfs God with a lot of time on his/her hands ports it there....
Native SD card encryption is Huge. The A2DP stack is a thing of wonder too....

exactly!!!!!!!!
My softbank x01ht came with WM5 and the only upgrade I did was the radio upgrade to 1.40.
May be it is my luck, but my x01ht seems really stable in its original ROM version (WM5 aku 2), I have never hard reset and the machine seems really stable. So my need to upgrade to WM6 to avoid system hang is not really existing.
Also, I use a lot of BUILT-IN functions such as Push Email, Wifi and Chinese support (my x01ht was flashed with a Hong Kong version 838 pro ROM before sold to me). If ANY one of such functions is WORSE in WM6 than in WM5, than WM6 is a no no for me. I can't stand any frequent freeze of the x01ht because I now depend solely on it for my daily phone/PIM use. If I don't have it working 100% normal, then I will lose many important phone calls.
I see WM6 really as an evolution of WM5. In WM6, MS has fixed many bugs that were in WM5, for example:
- Crappy A2DP
- WiFi now supports WPA
- HTML email
- Faster and more stable
- I'm sure MS has updated little things here and there to make WM6 more telco-standards (GSM, etc.) compliant
Well, are you still using Windows 95 on your PC?
My reasons for upgrading have been for (in order of importance) the speed, bug fixes, better memory management, the X button actually closing the app not just minimising it, Office updates, better compatibility and usability in the new Internet Explorer, etc.
When I bought my TyTN I was shocked by how slowly it responded to user input compared to previous Pocket PCs I'd owned.
After the developments that started occurring here a few months ago, there really was no turning back. I upgraded and now the OS is quick and very responsive. WM6 has been a godsend. The phone application also doesn't take 3-4 seconds to load when I press the call button to answer a call like it used to!
WM6 also has a much more polished look to it I think.
hold on, TomTom still freezes on mine with WM6 !
I still love it though (tomtom that is and wm6)
Let me know if this is solved will ya ?

I did it simply because WM5 was a little unstable and I love experimenting / playing with stuff like this.
A side benefit which I didn't know I would get is the LVSW version that I installed allows WPA2 & WPA2-PSK authentication on the Wi-Fi. That meant I could run my Hermes at the same security as my network and didn't have to modify my wireless router and other PCs.
There's probably still a few other good reasons that haven't been mentioned in this thread yet.
Cheers, Oggy.
Bug fixing, more speed,...
With WM5 I had issues like the phone applicatoin reacted too slowy on an incomming call. so i missed the call. Or sometimes it even didn't ring.
WM6 works in that point.

Did you install TomTom 6.03??? As of that version I never had freezes anymore...
I to have tomtom lockup and sloooooowwwww to get map directions. Please I miss my fast tomtom 6. I am using 6.03. I wonder if i did something wrong. I never had this problem with wm5.
What about support?
One benefit of wm6 is that the hackers, tweakers, rom cookers, and random slackers such as myself keep this hermes wm6 forum active (albeit sometimes unforgiving to newcomers). If you have a question about wm6 on a hermes, it is probably already answered here. Can as much be said for the wm5 forums?
Just works
Personally I was about to ditch my TyTN. The default OS was infuriatingly slow, buggy, and had me resetting several times per day. If I hadn't stumbled upon XDA-develoopers and started flashing WM6, I would probably be a Nokia user again... WM6 just works. I've flashed maybe 10 different versions now, also the radio, and it's completely worth it. No big risk of bricking if you do your homework first.

I don't think anyone with half a brain has bricked their phone doing an OS only upgrade (especially if they read the wiki etc etc)... and you answered your own question... who doesnt want a faster device?

I feel the same way as LazPL in that I was about to stop using the phone.
What I hated most about WM5 was a lack of real integration between the phone and contacts funtions, eg.:
. If you chose a call from the recent call list you could not access the contact directly (eg. if you just tried calling someone on their fixed line and wanted to try their mobile, you could not just click on the recent call you just made and select a different type of number, you had to select the name again from the list). In WM6 you can do this
. If you saved an unknown number from your recent call list it would automatically create a new contact, instead of giving you the option to save it in an existing contact (and choosing what type of number it was) or creating a new contact. In WM6 you can.
For me these 2 were just basic everyday usability features that I can find in the cheapest phones, and totally unacceptable to be missing in a €600 device. On the basis of these 2 alone, upgrading to WM6 was worth it.
In addition, my original Orange ROM had some bugs that were just pathetic (although these could have been cured with a newer ROM, or perhaps were due to the original radio ROM - which I also upgraded - and not the OS):
. Calls to busy numbers started blaring the busy tone through the loudspeaker (very loud)
. Trying to answer a call waiting would freeze the phone and require a soft reset
Hope that helps.
Pastings WIFI keys!!!
I've not been able to paste a wifi key in my WM05 ROM somone told me it was security...
rubish i think M$ to implement the copy/paste code.
Modem -> Bluetooth PAN is HUGELY more stable, my connection used to drop all the time in modem mode, i can now sit for 2 hours on my laptop at coffee shops and surf the web, whithout paying silly 1 day WIFI pass prices!

Need Some Help!!!

Greatings From Beautiful Greece ,
Before One Week I bought my first PPC , a HTC TYTN
I Would like to know how to unlock the gps. Is it possible?
I Can only connect to the Destinator with the bluetooth adaptor and connect to the satelite.
Anyone Know how to crack this? Is it possible?
Is there any new update i can install in order to manage better my ppc.
I Heard WM6. How Can I setup a new Operating System? Will It work or will my PPC Crash and after i will need Service.
Thank u all.
Odysseas.
TYTN does not have a GPS. There is nothing to unlock. (Well there suppose to be a chip but no antenna so its useless).
DO NOT MESS WITH YOUR OS!!!
A) Changing the OS without an official update from your cell company or the manufacturer of the device will void all warranty and you will have to pay for service if anything goes wrong.
B) Changing the OS on TYTN is very complicated and should not be tried unless you searched read several times uderstood and memorized all the steps.
Just enjoy your phone as it is for now because if you try to change ROM too soon you could end up with a very expensive paperweight! (Many people have)

HTC S630 - ROM Upgrade to Dopod or Not?

Hi Guys, I have an HTC Branded S630 with ROM 1.18.405.4. It has some minor issues like freezing, running slow sometimes and I was hoping a ROM upgrade would fix it, however, HTC does not have a support page for it...
Would it be advisable to upgrade to the Dopod 1.16.708.7 ROM? Or would this be like downgrading? Anyone know which ROM is newer/better?
Thanks.
anyone ? ?
Hi, I have the same problem running rom 1.18.707.4 and I installed the 1.16.708.7 but the situation remained the same. Therefore, I recommend to keep yours for now and look for another solution.
For your knowledge, my problem is that, besides freezing sometimes and becomming slow, after the initial sync with Outlook (+600 contacts and 2 weeks agenda only - no favorites, no e-mails, etc) the agenda does not open anymore and the e-mails are not downloaded automaticaly (I sync my IMAP server through GPRS).
I'm interested to know how you actually upgraded to the newer Dopod ROM on your HTC branded device ?
I have the same unit and I have been looking for a way to unlock this device so I can put non-HTC ROM's on but haven't found a way yet.....??
You might want to check Wiki. There's a cab "Oxios memory" which recovers lost memory.
It might help you know!
Cheers
Htc giving me hell
Ok folks i have been trying for at least a month to sort out my S630's wifi problem... it started one day when i was at a friends house trying to connect to their wifi, i was unsuccessful, so when i went in the com manager to connect it was saying that "device driver not loaded", i found that strange, because 2 hours before that i used wifi at a different location then turned off the radio. I soft rest the phone,, and the same thing happened... i then hard reset it and now the wifi option is no longer in commanager, hence no way to connect or turn on the radio... i flashed a number of roms to the phone and currently i have the dopod c730 rom (Chinese and english pack) installed on the phone,,, and still no luck... can someone please point me in the direction to get this fixed??? this phone was bought because it had the wifi and now nothing,,, it is completely functional, just without what is important to me, the wifi... Sorry if i am in the wrong trend but i am new to this and couldn't find much persons with this problem,,, please forgive..

PLEASE HELP with Artemis Rest, Advice on HTC System failure, Device Failure

Good evening .
I have been trying to solve a problem that i have with my o2 xda. The problem is that the Bluetooth device is not working, it won’t even start, and I tried to turn it on from the communications manager but nothing. I tried to turn it on from the settings/communications/Bluetooth/turn Bluetooth make it visible to devices, but also nothing.
It turns on when I soft reset the device a few times, than sometimes it comes back on with the Bluetooth on, blue light flashing, but I’m unable to get it to pair with any devices. Sometimes my laptop will pick up the signal for a few seconds, but it is not able to sink with device.
I have tried everything I could think of, even have done some hard resets but nothing.
Someone told me to do an Artemis reset. So I downloaded the 4.02 with cube zip that I found around this website, but since I have never done such a procedure, in fact this is my first time with windows mobile, so I didn’t want to mess it up.
I read in this forums that third party applications can cause sometimes this problems because of driver contamination , my device did have lots of extra apps so that could be the problem .
In any case I’m not an expert, not even close especially with this system, so any help / suggestions / diagnostics / instructions, will be greatly appreciated.
The device is an o2 xda with built in gps, running windows mobile 6.1.
ROM Athemis Touch 4.02 WWe
Rom date : 4/8/8
Radio Version : 03.08.90
Protocol Version : 4.1.13.52
CPU: OMAP850
Speed: 201MHz
Ram: 64MB
Flash Size 128Mb
Data Bus 16bits
Storage size 44.74MB
And if the best solution is to do this artemis reset, i will really appreciate some instructions on how to exactly do this task, and if there is any known issues of this procedure killing the phone? , since sometimes with this types of "resets / flashes” this type of devices sometimes dies! So any help will be appreciated.
Thanks a lot.
Hope Corporation .
Ps. IM STILL A LITTLE AFRAID TO DO IT, SINCE I HAVE NEVER DONE SOMETHING LIKE THIS BEFORE, AND I AM A LITTLE SCARED THAT I WILL SCREW IT UP EVEN MORE!... (DO YOU KNOW IF BY DOING THIS I WILL LOOSE THE WINDOWS MOBILE 6.1 THAT I HAVE NOW LOADED, AND IT DIDN’T CAME ORIGINALLY, ON MY DEVICE ? .. ALSO, MY DEVICE IS UNLOOK FOR ANY CARRIER.. WILL THE RESET HAVE ANY EFFECT WITH THIS?)
MY DEVICE IS GIVING ME NOW EVEN MORE PRBLEMS, IT FREEZES UP, WONT GET A PHONE SIGNAL, AND OVERALL FREEZES, TO THE POINT THAT I HAVE TO SOFT RESET IT TIME AND TIME AGAIN UNTIL IT WORKS… AND EVEN THEM, A SLIGHT MOVE, OR TO MUCH WORK, OR DON’T KNOW WHAT!!! CAUSES IT TO LOOS SIGNAL AGAIN … EVEN THE WIFI IS NOT WORKING PROPERTLY!!. SO I AM NOW REALLY! COMPELL TO DO THIS RESET, BUT
P L E A S E!!! I WILL APPRECIATE ANY ADVICE AND INSTRUCTIONS SO THAT I WONT MESS IT UP EVEN MORE. …
THANKS A LOT.
HOPE CORPORATION.
This should be in the Artemis Forum....
Anyways, don't worry too much about the Bluetooth problem, I had the same issues when I first got my phone (P3300). Once I flashed the ROM there was a significant difference with the phone. I am currently using Tom's Oops black ROM, there are a few small issues (like not seeing the OK button on a pop up window) but nothing serious. In fact I would go as far as to say that a "cooked ROM" is WAY better than the OEM ROM that you have. It was assembled by a user of the phone with speed and usability in mind. If anything these ROM chefs should be approached by the OEMs for advice & suggestions.
Now for the scariest thing ever: Your first ROM Flash. Mine was with the WM6 update so it wasn't as scary as it came direct from HTC. My second Flash was Artemis Touch full 4.0, it wasn't as smooth as I would have liked it to be, I recommend having two seperate copies of the downloaded rom. I had an ROM Error saying the ROM was invalid 6% into installation. All I did was download another copy and try again. It is really that easy. I recommend you download PPC PIM backup and backup before you flash or you will lose all sms's and contacts! Not a fun prospect.
My Artemis has 25mb free RAm and is running stable 247Mhz, this is an extremely good phone especially when considering the price.
Thank you for your advice....
Thanks a lot for your responce... and sorry for mi ignorance when it comes to windows mobile, but this
is mi first time with it.. I had always used symbian, but in any case....
I downloaded the Artemis_Touch_4[1].02_Full_with_4_sided_cube 54.2 MB, but to tell you the trouth, I dont
have the SMALLEST!! idea of how to do it at all!!!??
Should I just install this on my pc, and the instructions on how to do the reset trough the phone
will come on? or should I do something to my phone allow the reset ?
Also, you advice me the oops black room.. thanks for that.. but do you know from where, and what version
should I download? the only link/version I couls find if this : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=401062
I will really appreciate a little extra help...
thanks a lot for your time, and I really hope to hear from you soon. ...
Hope Corporation.
PS/ what about the unlook phone deal? will this wont be affected in my device? since im ussing my device
outside a normal carrier... moviestar, ecuador. .. thanks .
