this is my first experience with a pocket pc or anything running windows mobile and i must admit that i'm hooked to the platform/os. its great. have one problem though... i used to have a palm device and the installations of palm software was so much simpler. i like the fact that pocket pc software comes with the option of .exe installation, or .cab installation. but why did they make the .cab installation so tedious? you should be able to drag the cab file over to the activesync window and have it install. simple.
is it just me?
not sure what you mean... i prefer to see cab instalations, cause i hate using activesync, i prefer just load it to my wizard and execute it on WM5... i hate all that activesync thing... another thing is when i download some new stuff directly on my xda, and it appears to be activesync exe instalator... it drives me mad, cause i have to wait until i get to my pc... see my point?

maybe i didn't explain it properly. i figure since you have to click explore on the activesync window anyway and drag over the cab file then go to file explorer in the windows mobile device and then run it, it would be so much easier to drag the cab file over to the activesync window and let activesync install the cab file for you.
as for your issue. most sites will have a choice to download either the exe installer or the cab file.
i only use cab too
ppl who download directly to their pda also cant use activesync
when i wanna install a program i just pop my sdcard in my reader and copy the cab's to the pda and install them

when that's installed right click on your cab file and select 'Cab via Activesync'

Yep hiimcliff, now i get you, and your right. this would be cool - most of the times i download cabs on my pc rather then pda directly, and then it would be a good idea. that link in previous post would be a good one to check ;]

oh thanks... thats great.
why on earth would ms not have this as a built in feature? it seemed like a no brainer to me.
Because cabs are for the device, and installers are for your PC. The fact that we generally prefer to use cabs for more control over the install is a positive side effect, but not necessarily an intended consequence.

I've unlocked my ExtRom and deleted everything in it. I thought I'd be able to install programs to it to save on system memory, but no programs seem to work - the message I get is "program is not a valid Pocket PC application". Is there something I'm doing wrong, or will programs just not run from the ExtRom?

Adam i dont think the pacman is worthy of use on the Universal. Pacman = Free sucky old game. I think you should try donkey kong on the extended ROM and let me know if it works . Chris would be happy if you used dk . Go ahead and try to install it.
oh always da old DONKEY KONG or should i say DK

Not sure if I agree... or maybe we're talking about different steps in the lifetime of the extended rom.
I've always wondered why I don't hear more people talking about installing files to the extended rom. But I have been doing so successfullly for quite a while. I've had no issues, I simply use it as another drive on the phone.
Here's a list of programs that I have installed there and are running successfully. I'm currently using 7.76Mb and have 2.17Mb free.
PHM RegEdit
Hitchhiker Wifi
Mobile Task Manager
PocketPuTTY
Skype
Total Commander
WiFiFoFum
Hmmm... i hardly think making 'fun' (ho ho ho) of what someone has on their rom is constructive - but hey i'll play along!
My point was that you CAN install to the extended rom if you unlock it. I have had several programs - most that dont like the SD card like Agile that need to boot up on start before the SD is ready - installed on the extended rom and they work fine.... oh and PacMan too! Oh and i believe they call PacMan a 'Classic', very similar to 'DK' i think!
Call me dumb, but how do I install a CAB? I looked at wiki and several forums

You really need to look harder or just try and experiment...
Now that I've fired off the mandatory chastisement, let me try to be somewhat helpful....
When your phone is connected to your Desktop, Right click on your active sync icon in your Desktop Windows taskbar. Select "Explore". You'll get a windows explorer. You can just drag and drop the CAB file from your Windows Desktop to that folder, and viola! a Cab file is now on your PPC.
From there, explore to that same directory from your PPC using File Explorer (if you haven't figured out how to get CABs installed on your PPC yet, you probably aren't using Resco Explorer yet, either ). From the the PPC explorer, just click the CAB file and it'll install.
I hope that helps.

Ah see, mine is having issues as I am on Vista Ultimate... and well it isnt Ultimate with syncing, Guess if I use the XP comp I may have seen this with no issue.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH THOUGH! That was a big help!
obcviously your new to ppc's, Welcome to xda-devs and a world of a love and hate relationship!
just keep in mind .cab's install within the ppc and .exe's usually install with activesync while your device is connected to your pc. If you have a .exe give you a Win32 error, that means it runs on the ppc as well.
You could also send the CAB file using bluetooth OR by e-mail. Then simply receive the mail on your ppc, detach the attachment (the CAB file) and proceed from there.
By the way: after you install the CAB, you can delete it from you ppc, to save space.
Oh, and should this thread not be in the general forum in stead of WM6?

WINRAR.... is installed on my machine and cab's were viewed as RAR's (I figured everyone rar'd or zipped em, so I was unpacking them and trying to install that way of the setup.xml But I put one unpacked on the PPC and it looks like an executable so I confirmed and then installed, I am no tracking... MicroSD card... Nokia carries mainly Mini's I have 3 minisd's with only a little need for any of the three...
CANT DELETE (tried top thread normal BB Code spot in advance, admin or mod if you see this please delete I figured it out with help from the fine board members you have.)

There is a tutorial around here somewhere that someone created to explain how to get AS working or at least to change the drivers for the tool that Vista uses to the AS drivers so that you can sync in Vista.
I haven't read it myself as I am still using XP Pro and haven't needed to, but have heard several people say that it solved their Vista nightmares as far as their Hermes devices go.
The technique is described in my guide HERE give it a go, however if it doesnt work this technique is the same as described elsewhere in the forum and as such you should try to get access to an XP machine until vista is conquered.
Ive had many PMs saying it works fine so it is definatly worth a shot
In Vista, the process of copying a cab or other file from the PC to the WM device is even easier. Vista has default USB drivers that show the WM device in Vista File Explorer and you can drag and drop items from one system to the other when they are connected over USB.
If you connect a WM device and then run Windows Update, the Vista Mobile Device Center update will automatically download and you will have all the features of ActiveSync automatically.
The procedures described by Mr Vanx are of course if you want to use your Vista PC to upgrade the ROMs on your WM device and other such advanced technical things that you should avoid until you've gained some experience!
Hope this helps.

If you having problems with Vista you could install the cab file onto your memory card if you have a card reader, and then run it from your device by tapping on it. I can vouch for the Vista fix that mrvanx pointed out as I have used it myself, it is all clearly described with full screenshots and I think you should give it go, just follow each step and do exactly as it says!
Hi guys, ive had my touch hd 3 days now and ive been riducled by everyone that i didnt go for a iphone, however ive spent alot of time on here and its plain to see that so much can be done and be added!
Now i gotta confess i dont know what a CAB file is, i dont know what ROM is, i dont know what this manilla is, so i hope you can see my probs!
During my 3 days ive managed to download the blackpad dialler and the hd tweak(altho they took me ages), but i wanna change the theme, the wallpapers, i wanna add apps like google maps etc..
I hope this thread will attract people who can help people like myself out and explain how to do stuff and where to go etc..
Btw how do i choose a downloaded song(synced via windows media) to be my ringtone? haha such a amateur!
Thank you for any help in advance!
have you read the wiki? that will help allot, helped me 2.
the wiki??? lol
a .cab is an install file you copy to your phone and then tap it to execute from like file explorer. most installs if they are exe you run them on you PC and they send a cab file to you phone through activesync. but if its a cab file just copy to you phone and execute. If you dont like it yoou can uninstall from eith the phone in Settings/System/Remove Program.. or from you PC on activesynce or mobile device center.
Where on the phone is file explorer? but thanx for the rest, actually makes sense, god im blonde!
where can i read about this wiki?
Its in programs.
Honestly, I would reccomend you go through your phone. Go into programs and see whats there. Then go into each of the settings options and see whats there.
Then learn the hierarchy of your phone memory.
You will see that it is similar to Windows.
The top directory will be"My Device" and under it will be "Storage Card" which is your memory card (similar to an external hard drive analogy for a desktop) and then you will see Program Files where programs are installed and My Documents contains the following folders and more:
My Videos where you videos you record will be saved
My Pictures
This is the wiki page - it's VERY helpful: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Blackstone
And, the software wiki is here: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Software
You chose well. The Blackstone is an amazing bit of kit!
Keep in mind that it's basically a small computer with an aerial. Unlike the iPhone its not just a fancy phone.
Any computer needs a way for the user to tell it what to do... thats the operating system in the blackstone that's windows mobile (or winmo). You also need a user interface (ui) so you can tell it what to do. The HD uses touchflo 3d (tf3d). That's the front screen with all the tabs and clocks and stuff.
Like any computer... programs are installed to do different things. The dialers, sms, camera are all programs. This means you can install new programs to do things or overwrite programs to change what you already have.
These programs come in two main forms the cab file and the exe. The cab runs only on the phone and the exe will only run on the phone or your computer. There are lots of cabs to do lots of things. Download one that's interesting and run it.
Everything is stored in files on your blackstone. You can look through these files using file explorer... you will find that in your programs tab on tf3d. files are stored in folders. that means you can organise them the way you like.
The secret to the blackstone is to think about what you'd like to be able to do with it then search here or google to find a way... there usually is one.
I have tried to find some things on how to, tutorials and so on but i cant find anything that has given me success, some of my must have apps are installed from the computer, and id want to see if i can just make them into a cab instead and just have them on the memory card for comfort and when flashing on the go from sd it is annoying not being able to have the "must have" app.
any help would be deeply appreciated and i would be most grateful.
if this is done in ten sec to a minute i added one of the desktop installers if some one would be so very kind to help me
http://www.e-sword.net/pocketpc/files/ppc2005setup301.exe
Thank you very much.
ps: another noob question, the program named ppc2005setup301 it runs in vga, and since most rom are qvga if i understand it right the program buttons are shrinked? it is usable but you got to be exakt with the stylys to hit them, kinda hard on the bus or subway if anyone could help me with that one id kiss ya!
Peace and a lot of love to you all!
Can you not just extract the cab using win rar?
Easiest way is to run the installer with your phone disconnected. Then go into the microsoft active sync folder in program files and you should be able to find the cab in a folder in there. I've done this several times to set up a back up folder on my sd card (just in case)
hi i am new to the htc hd mini and i am finding very hard to find good info on what to do with it maybe its still new, but how do i install apps i have downloaded a few themes/apps and not having any joy of putting them on the the phone sure i have put them on the memory card but can't install them from there i have downloaded the activesync (running win xp) and that don't install apps. so i am stuck it was quicker and easy to jailbreak the ipod touch and put apps on there. where am i going wrong ?
many thanks a confused hd mini owner.
p.s
now i know there is no compass on it (one of the things i was looking forward to using)
also while looking on youtube there was a clip where someone is doing street view or somethink like and moving the phone about and the street image moved too, also i was told that using google maps with the layers i could find a shop with it..i think this must be for another phone.
apart from this its still a nice little phone would be much better if i could get some of the above working.
App extensions are CAB it's like seeing zip or rar file on PC.
to check the file extension in your PC go to Folder Option > View Tab > Remove tick from Hide Extension...
move cab files in your Storage card then in file explorer from your phone click on them and if prompt Microsoft security choose Yes and finally choose where to install applications.
in case your application is EXE: connect your phone to your PC via Active Sync and then run the file from PC... Follow the on screen instructions.
