... So, what gives? I'm quite an emoticonny person, I don't spam them all over the place but I tend to use five or six if I'm writing a long reply, maybe a few more if I'm in a very good/exciteable mood (I feel it helps convey the context better, because text is such a stale, unforgiving medium when it comes to misunderstandings and misinterpretations).
Also, there's been threads in the past where I've posted big long replies including multiple (offsite) linked images, which, were I to attempt this again, would be impossible. I understand about the feature cobbled on which allows you to upload large images to the post or repy and then reference them with square brackets, but I have this "thing" about not using that feature, as you can never tell if they're going to disappear or the forum's going to be upgraded or modified and all the pictures lost - when I host my pictures on my web host on my little corner of the Internet, I can guarantee that they'll be available there for pretty much as long as I'm still alive and paying the hosting bills. Plus they're my pictures, I'll host them - that's why I don't use flickr for storage of my thousands of photos, I'd rather do it myself so I have total control.
Ideally, I'd like to see this limit removed, deactivated or at least raised to a higher number (10 or 15), or maybe removing the restriction just for people who've donated, because I can see it causing problems in the future for people like me who might need to illustrate a long reply or guide to setting something up / tweaking some system settings with multiple screengrabs to highlight every major step.
I don't know what other people think, but I can't really see any reason for an imagel imit - if someone goes and spams a forum thread with three hundred pictures, they can be given a warning or banned from posting new replies for x amount of time, just imposing a blanket limit on every user seems a bit pointless to me.
However, in the scope of XDADevs I'm naught more than an 'orrible little luser - anybody else have any of their own opinions they'd like to add to this?
How do you upload images to wiki?
RESOLVED Answer in new wiki http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Help:Images
Rather than starting a new thread, can I ask how does one upload images to wiki apart from storing them on a third party site? I have written a wiki:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Xtask
I would like to add some screen shots but the only way I could do it was to link to one on tinypic.com:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
First I tried uploading the jpg to an album of mine in xda:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/album.php?albumid=1247
but I could not get these to display in posts or wiki as the extension is not "jpg".
I then tried to ftp and put them in a directory I created here:
ftp://xdaupload:[email protected]/Software/XTask/Screenshots/
I also put in a ReadMe.txt but cannot link to these as they are in ftp.
For wiki I have seen them loaded in "images" folder
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/images/ARTE200.jpg
For the forum, I could load them as "Attached Thumbnails" as I have done below but this does not display in wiki as the extension is not "jpg".
It makes sense to store the images on xda-developers so anyone can use them and update them as necessary.
Can anyone kindly guide me in the right direction as to how to use xda-developers to store and show images in a wiki?
Cheers
Tom

Hi all...
I've been developing bits and pieces of stuff on my phone for my own use and I thought I'd share this with you. Unfortunately it's only useful for people who live in Sydney as it relies on 131500.com.au (locals will know what I'm talking about). Although that service has its own "Mobile" version webpage, I find it very inefficient to type in addresses and not have it remember my last selection - especially since I'm usually already in a hurry if I ever find myself needing to check the timetables.
It's a tiny (but multi-threaded for uber-fast interface) program (30kbs) that remembers your last To/From train stations and will directly fetch the timetable for trains in the next hour in a WebBrowser control. And a single-button (reverse) that gives you the same timetable for the other direction on your way home.
Note: uses internet data! - but only a single page. Probably 1kb or so each time?
Limitations (as by the 131500 mobile service): unable to directly give timetable for connecting trains. ie: both stations must be on the same line
Requires: .NET Compact Framework
Compatible with QVGA/VGA/WVGA devices. But I'm posting under blackstone forum because that's the phone I use
Freeware - and all comments/suggestions etc welcomed. Many thanks!
P.S. At uni now.. so i've only included a crude screenshot. I'll post a proper one if i get a fair bit of interest in this. thanks
hey mate do you think it would be possible to do up a brisbane one?
If there's a website that allows you to look up the brisbane timetables I don't see why not. alternatively if you can source a soft copy of the timetable?
www.qr.com.au
are you able to grab it from there?
Very useful, thanks!

I've just sent an email to QR. Will see what they say first..
It's good but don't like the fact it connects to the net to get the info.
If you look at timetables, they are mostly always the same, so you can get the info currently right now and make an offline version in which the times are accessible whenever and whenever there might be a new timetable, such as the new Chatswood lines, there could be an update button just to get the new times.
Other than that, good start but definitely needs an offline version.
Hello there!
I have a small suggestion to help minimize duplicate threads.
This is especially prevalent in the HD2 forum where every day people make new threads about Android on HD2 (which, I am guilty of doing too...my apologies )
So, on some other vBulletin boards in which I am a member, they have a great feature.
When someone is creating a new thread and puts in the thread title, the board displays previous threads that have similar titles. I really think it is necessary to have that functionality in here too.
Just my 2c
Thanks for reading!
It's one I have suggested a few times before, but I am not sure what vB mod it is.
Any ideas?
Is this it?

Thanks, I'll stick on the admin's list and see what he says
thanks for reading
I hope the admins can realize this, it would be a great feature.

+1 on this
So I looked into this and turned on a plugin that shows related threads at the bottom of each thread page. Two problems with it: 1. It's not that useful 2. It affects sever performance.
If anyone knows of a plugin that will search as you type a new thread title in, that would be great.
Don't know about the real time search (I am not an admin so I don't know the first thing about vBulliten) but here is the screen shot of an example of what I was talking about from the avsforum board in the first post and the relevant plug in:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
and here is the page for the plug in:
http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=151714
I understand that this plug in is heavy on the server. As such, is it possible to turn it on just for some high activity sub forums?

That looks like the bad boy I'm after... let's see what the admins make of it .
+1 for this
looks very useful and no0bies who sometimes don't search can see simlar threads as they;re typing it!
The misses has just received here DHD and found that the standard HTC People manager only shows the address in a small scrollable field and it's really awkward to see the full address at a glance.
Does anyone have any ideas how to make the address easily visible?
Or an alternative contact manager app?
I'll post screen shots later if it'll help.
I had a quick surf earlier and couldn't find any info that was helpful...
So we can view a complete contract address, does anyone know how to get the standard Contact viewer to replace HTC's?
HTC Contact Address is truncated on a single line e.g.
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

}
Android Contact Address is shown over several lines e.g.
Excuse the pic's, they're for illustration purposes only.
I had the same problem with my last phone - a Nokia E71. You had to hit 'edit' to view the address in a seperate window. A pain in the posterior! And, like you, I've noticed that the HTC People app does the same thing. So you can either a) use the 'edit' mode or b) tap the address, it comes up on Google maps, tap the flag and then the full address pops up. Doh ....
Thing is, with the more basic Nokias, and I've just checked with the wife's 2730 Classic, you can use the 'View' option to look at the complete address. If the address was so long it wouldn't fit on one screen then you just scroll down. Simples! Now, how can Android do the same?
Dave
Same problem with birthday... Can't see the year until you edit it, annoying
OK. Been looking into this as I was getting a bit hacked off with it. Something so basic .... Anyhow, downloaded 'AddressBook for Android 2' and at first it looked quite good but soon noticed it had no 'comapny' field ... But you could view the complete address in a single window.
Then tried Youlu. Now this seems to meet all my needs (at present anyway!). It gives all the same info as the 'people' app but when you choose the address you get ..... the full postal address!!!! Only then, if you tap the address you get Google maps showing where it is.
HTH
Dave
Thanks for the suggestions, although I don't see many favourable reviews for Youlu - how have you found it?
I sent this issue to HTC a few weeks back. Maybe if more of us do the same they may consider addressing it (if you'll pardon the pun) in a future update.
I'm getting a little fed-up with having to consider using 3rd party apps to replace basic functionality. I'm using Handcent because Sense SMS is broken, the Sense calendar is full of holes and doesn't include tasks, so I'm looking for a replacement... And contacts (which is otherwise ok) doesn't show complete addresses!
Hey guys,
after developing my App "Remote", I nearly immediately started a new project.
Not an app, a game it should be.
So I began about 2 months ago and now I want to present the current results to you.
The game is named "OrthoGun" and it's a 2D Space Shoot 'Em Up.
Unlike other genre representatives you can't upgrade your ship in the usual way.
I build a randomized itemsystem: There are different types of items (like standard armor, a simple cannon) and from those the items will be generated which will have different attributes (so there would be a cannon which makes 10 damage and a cannon which makes 500 damage and one which shots very fastly and one which shoots very slowly). When starting a level, enemies will be randomly generated from those items. When killing an enemy, there is a chance a he drops one of his items, which you can eventually pick up and use by yourself.
{

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
So this an actual enemy from the game. The shape and items, he has, are completely randomly generated using certain rules.
Using those items you also build your own ship. You practically just drag&drop the items to the position you like and you're done.
The game will feature about 20 levels with different difficulties and types of enemies
Plus 3 modes and bonuslevels.
I'm currently trying to convince Microsoft Game Studios to publish it, so I can integrate the XBOX Live Services, but they have a very long respond time.
You can view more screenshots on the facebookpage (see signature) (you don't have to like the page or be registered to view the screenshots, but I would be happy if you so because it's a lot easier to keep you updated because I promote this game in other forums too)
Note that the colors you see, currently depend on your accent color (I use "mango" at the moment)
Please let me now whether you like the idea or not. I will try to answer any question and I would be very happy about feedback (negative&positive).
Thank you for your attention!
Sincerely
DeathLamp
May take a while to get use to. The randomized drop of items could make the game super hard hard at times. I hope you can save progress and not have to start from level 1 the whole time. It could be quite interesting. Graphics seem a bit outdated but then I'm assuming your going for that look?
Sure all progress will be saved.
As I've already said there will be level.. each will unlock a new itemtype so you're not able to find every item right from the beginning. Currently I made enemies handicapped, so they don't get the same amount of health, damagepower and shoot speed from the items.
At the moment you will only be able to keep the items if you complete the level, but at least there are no lives, so you can try as often as you like.
Yeah I am aware that the graphics are the critical point of the game, and it actually looks kind of worse on a static picture. I will try to make video the next days.
And thanks for your feedback
EDIT: And heres the video
It's the second half of the tutorial
I am thinking of starting an app for my college. Pretty much I want the app for it to have users or students in this case register make a username and password and then just for it to be forum kind of style where users can create threads and also for it to have a messaging system incase someone is selling a book both users can communicate with each other. the thing is i have no idea where to begin if anyone can show me a step by step or just a summuray on what to do to make this.

Buy domain from namecheap, hosting from dreamhost. Use phpbb as forum software (completely FREE) or vBulletin. Start a web forum, install Tapatalk plugin. Share link.
Tada! No programming at all.

This may sound like a good solution but it becomes complex for the user when they have to use forum software. I am not sure you have can limit functionality with Tapatalk. OP is trying to create an application that is simple and includes his/colleges branding. Another problem is using Tapatalk since it's a generic application and you can't rebrand it for his college or niche group. I know it looks like OP is trying to redesign the wheel but I think he's trying to do it in a way that makes it more efficient and, in a way, more useful for users.
@OP
I am quite new to Android dev and I learning by using "Google: Android developer basics" (I can't post links since I have < 10 posts) I am not sure if it's the best way but I think it would be a good place to start.
Quick one please. Which hosting provider did you choose here if I may ask?
