Our phone is stupid. The file system has /sdcard as the main directory, and so everything on the phone thinks it's working off of an external sd card. Therefore my 32 GB external card goes mostly unused. Very sad. There's this though:

People are able to swap the internal and external sd cards. Can this work on our phone? Thanks.

this would be awesome if it would work.
I found overall with 16GB I am happy with it as is. I can store my music on my true external SD card and I doubt I will run out of room /w 16GB for apps etc... However, I do see the point and it is one design flaw I have noticed.
If that method works hell yes. I guess I may try it.

I agree, I just stuff all my music and movies on my micro sd and not worry about using that internal for it.
going to go buy this phone today. ran into the same problem on the photon but i was able to edit some lines in the void file and switched the "cards" around so my actual 32gb sd card was read as the sd card and not external sd card. will let you know what i find

It does this for a reason ....ROM is much faster than a Sd if you switch it may screw up the video cam being able to record 720 & 1080....

Wow. After reading that entire thread, I gotta say that the OP over there, trip007n, must have the patience of a saint.
He's continuously, repeatedly, answered the same questions OVER and OVER again...(like "How do I use Root Explorer?" (seriously?), or "how should the card be formatted?", or "Why won't it work with MAH phone?"). Seriously, those people need read the dang OP first, then read the thread, then learn how to properly reformat an SD card before wasting anymore of that guy's valuable time. Sheesh.
(Anyone that's tried this, did you make sure that the SD was COMPLETELY formatted to FAT32, down to the first zerobit of data? I've found in the past, if you miss that crucial part, NO device in the world is gonna recognize it: best done with Linux, but there are ways to do it properly thru windows as well.)
Hi guys,
I've had my N7100 for 2 mouths and i was making photos and videos as normal , but one day i made a photo , the storage was set to the SD card , and then when i took it a message popped up on the screen saying "cannot write file in sd card. default storage is now changed to phone memory". If I make a video on to the SD card the Camera app just crashes, and doesn't save the video .Every time i set ste storage to SD card it does the same things.
I tried formatting the card and resetting the phone but it didn't help. I'm using the stock 4.1.1 rom.
If anyone knows how to solve the issue please let me know.
Thanks!
Still nothing ?
Here is a video I have made.

Sure , from the phone , from the PC i even tried formating it from my Sony camera. It is like this with every card i throw in it (8gd SDHC , 4gb SD and a 16gb SDHC ) I have tried everything and it's still like this
SanDisk are known for short life.

The card i shot the video with is a Kingston 16gb sdhc class 10.
I'm having the same issue
Hello everyone, sorry for bringing an old post to live.
But I think this was unanswered (sorry if it wasn't I haven't found the right post then)
I'm having the same issue, Camera app works just fine, but it won't save to micro SD, I recieve the same message shtepsel gets.
The SD memory seems to work fine, I can browse the files from the phone, and play music normally (wich is in the SD memory)
BUT and this seems to be related, the "Gallery" app won't let me scroll the pictures from the camera (saved in the SD).
Sooo... anyone solved this? XD
Any suggestions?
Shtepsel did you solved this, or just learn no live with it?
I lived with it for a few mouths. Then i bought a new SD and the message kept popping out. 2 weeks after I got the card I did a factory reset , and then all of a sudden the phone started saving photos and videos to the SD card. However I haven't got anything else on the card except the DCIM folder and a couple of .apk files.
I have 812 pictures in my Camera album on my external Toshiba 32GB Class 10 SD card. When I first got the phone in December, everything worked great, even after transferring from my EVO 3D. Now, whenever I try to access my stuff on my SD card through the Gallery app, it just freezes. I can hit home and exit the app, but back doesn't work and I cannot scroll anywhere. I can still access pictures via ASTRO and save stuff on to it..I just don't anymore, in case it goes corrupt. Any solutions? I tried searching, but no one seems to have the same problem as me..
Lol. Sounds like a simple cache issue with the gallery. Go to settings, application manager, all apps, find gallery, try clearing cache, and if that doesn't solve the problem, delete data. This will not delete your images. I think it may or may not delete your thumbnails. Just scroll over the images again and a thumbnail is remade. Nothing will harm your photos.

hmmm... I would normally say that the 800+ images in one gallery might be the cause of the problem. But you say that it was working fine previously. Even then, I'd recommend to split the images into different folders (maybe based on month they were taken) to minimize the amount of thumbnails that gallery has to process and look through.
I'm assuming you've done the MA6 and MB1 updates. Perhaps upgrading the phone to 4.1.2 caused this? I haven't heard of anything similar on XDA, but I'd stick with kkarson's approach and clear cache from the gallery app. Hope that works for ya!
Already tried clearing the cache and data from the Application Manager, but still the same results. I have a folder of old camera photos from my EVO 3D with 1780 photos in it, and it opens and I can view the photos perfectly fine, with no lag or freezing. But when I open the "Camera" folder on the ext. SD card, it just freezes and I have to go back to the home screen. I just upgraded to MB1 today and still the same results..

Maybe there's corrupted files on the SD card causing the phone to choke when it tries to read them. If you have windows 7 or XP you can put the card in your pc, (with a card reader or usb card reader), then right click on the card and choose properties. Select the tools tab in the properties box. The first option is error checking which will scan the disk and fix errors (if fix errors is checked). However, if there are corrupted files on the SD card it might be going bad and should be reformatted.
I have the same issue. I havent found a fix. I even formatted my external SD card.. didnt help.

No fix. Your Sd card is done. The fix is get a new one.
Also the op likely has Sd card problems and not a phone problem.

The card isnt that old and isnt giving any read/write errors.
I guess that could be the case.. its a class 10 Sandisk card.. I would think it would last more than a couple of months.

Have you benchmarked your read/write speeds to your external sd?

I'm looking at a Sandisk 32GB class 10 ultra card that I got right after xmas so it's only 3 mopnths old. It started spitting out corrupt files after only 1 month. Eventually I'll get another card. But if my phone ever random restarts, or suddenly locks up, or I notice media is using a lot of battery, I know if I run scan disk on the card it will show errors. It lasts for a few weeks between formats.
There are also tons of posts from people that have had sd card failures on this phone (also with new cards).
Scan of my card after phone acted up.

I bought a new class 10 PNY card today. Once I get some pictures on it, I guess we'll see if that was the issue.

Dont worry you're not alone, theres a thread in general that had a ton of posts and the thread title was "If your sdcard failed on you, what recovery were you on?"
Many have had to purchase 2 or 3 cards until they got one that didnt go bad or corrupted. If you got the sdcard (the one that failed) very recently, you could call the manufacturer and tell them it failed on you, I'm sure they would send a replacement because I've seen others do it and they got their replacements in a timely manner

This isn't the section for the S4.
So just recently, when I go to Spotify, sometims it says:
No SD Card Found
We found no place to store our data, please check that you have a working SD card and free space.
So first of all I do have an SD Card... 64gb. Second of all, a reboot always fixes this. Third of all, I thought Spotify doesn't save music to the SD card anyway without installing an old version before they got rid of the ability to store music on the sd card (something that's annoyed me about the app for a while but it is what it is and I'd rather keep my apps up to date than toy around with old versions of apps).
So, any thoughts?
I really would hate to think that the SD card is the problem for 2 reasons... 1) a 64gb sd card isn't exactly cheap. and 2) I've had roughly the same problem or a similar problem with EVERY SINGLE SD CARD IVE EVER HAD IN AN ANDROID PHONE. I don't drop my phone. i don't do weird stuff with it. I just put the card in the day i get the phone and leave it there and every single time for the last 4 years of being an Android user, I've had various sd card issues after some amount of time... Never this particular issue... But some kind of problem associated with the sd card. Used to be that installing apps to sd caused problems (i don't do that anymore). then it was data on the sd card not being accessible. Then it was some other stuff. Now it's this.
So anyway... any thoughts?
thanks!
Are you running a custom Rom? With the 64GB cards, the S3 can be a bit finicky. It's usually a formatting issue, especially if it's on a non touchwiz Rom. But most likely it's formatted as exFat. Try reformatting to fat32 and see if that helps.

no, i'm not rooted... but thank you i'll look into that to see if it's formatted exFat.
Well.....If your running stock, it should read the exFat format just fine. Still can have odd behaviour though so I'd still try fat32. Just saying that exFat should work for you. Could be an app issue with it I guess. Let us know either way if that helps though.

I apologize if this thread is made too often. I've been searching around for a fix, however I can't seem to find anything.
I'm running Cyanogenmod on my GS3. I've had an 8GB SD card that I pulled over from my old Evo 4G that has served me well for years, however I figured it is about time I moved on after spending the last few months deleting apps and videos to make space for more. I purchased a Sandisk 64 GB SDXC card and am attempting to use it with my phone, however I get the dreaded "Damaged SD Card - Try reformatting" error.
Of note, the 8 GB SD card still works perfectly fine, so I don't believe it is a problem with the SD card slot or anything. In fact, this is the first time I've touched the slot since purchasing the phone a year or two ago.
I've tried many things that people have recommended to others from searching around, however nothing seems to have worked.
I've tried reformatting it with three different programs as well as running chkdsk on cmd.
I've tried letting the reformatting process on the phone, which is prompted to me when pressing the notification for the Damaged SD Card", run for 15 minutes and it continues to run with the message "Unmounting SD Card" (which is odd since the card isn't mounted in the first place).
I can read the card perfectly fine on my laptop through the card reader, however it does prompt me to format the card every time I switch it over from the phone to the laptop, saying something along the lines of it not being in a language the laptop can read. After formatting, I can view the card as a drive.
Does anyone happen to have a fix for this? I would really like to start using my new card.
From a quick Google search on your problem it seams that SanDisk and Samsung galaxy's don't play nice with each other due to a flaw in SanDisk cards you may want to contact SanDisk about the issue.

Did you format the SD Card to FAT32 before using it ?

The only options I'm given to format it is exFAT and NTFS. I have only tried exFAT.
EDIT: I searched around and found that Windows only allows you to format to FAT32 with 32 GB or less. I downloaded a Fat32Formatter program that let me bypass that, formatted the card, and it works perfectly now! Thank you so much!
Your welcome . Glad you got it sorted out.
