I cannot seem to be able to load that file. I can only Explore on my 8125. I can extract the .cab file to my desktop and I can copy the unextracted .cab file to the 8125 (or the extracted files) but I cannot install the program.
Any suggestions?
Copy the .cab file to your device and run it there. I don't think you need to extract it first before copying it over.
Better still here is an explanation of what you would be doing and why.

Hi Folks,
i found a trick to make an autoinstall from strorage card (like from extended Rom)!
autorun.exe looks for the file config.txt on the place is in registry stored in:
"HKLM\Comm"
"AutoRunCFG" = "\Speicherkarte\Autoinstall\config.txt"
so i changed the registry entry and now i am able to put config.txt and the files to install on every place i want.
on windows Mobile 2003 devices this works wonderful!
on problem i have now with windows mobile 5 devices:
when installing a question appears where to store files (device or storage card)!
can anybody help me to get rid of this question during automatic cab install??
i want install all cab files to device without any questions!!
pbelcl: apologies for my ignorance, but is this very different to a 2577 folder?
with a 2577 cab we could use this info:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?p=225375#225375
and choose a default install folder I think for WM5.

Thanks for your quick answer!
i read the other tread and if i understood it right i have to remove the .dll file from my cabs?
i'll try this and tell you if it worked ....
I think the other way round.
I've never done it before, but you need to make a custom cab and .inf file, and specify the installation location in therere, and then the "choose a location" dialog doesn't come up. I'm not sure, I'll try this at home later.

Thanks, that would be interesting for me because i cant generate cab files because i hav no developer software for this.
i also have access to a cab file manager (at a customer) where i can edit the cab files and change them as i need it.
if it is possible to generate an "empty" cab file for me that would be nice ....
pbelcl: I never use the cabwizard either, I use cab manager. To make an empty cab, take any normal cab (download one of mine?) and just remove all the files from it. That's what I always do!

ok, this is also my way to get an empty cab file
there is one question interesting:
Sometimes there is a "CheckFile.exe" and a "CeSetup.dll" in the cab file.
Do i need them for any work during install this cabfile or can i delete them also?
I remove everything from my cabs, and then use cab manager and drag and drop stuff. So I've never used those files. I will have to read up on how to make a "normal", but I don't think they're necessary if you didn't put them in there!

Hi folks,
again my last problem with automatic install on WM5 devices:
when my automatism starts to install the cab files (from where ever) each time there comes a popup windows where to install the cabfile (storage card or device).
for my routines it is not important becaue most of my cab files only set some registry keys and dont install files on the device!
Does anybody know how i can get rid of this window and install the files to device WITHOUT question popup window??
Hello,
I would like to know how can I extract the .cab files from an exe file that is an application installer (the exe should be run on the PC).
I think that the active sync saves a copy of the cab files, but I am not sure. If using activesync is the only way, it's fine, but I prefer a method that does not install the software first and it does not involve activesync.
Thank you,
Eran
Well it really depends on the application, there is not always one answer that fits all things.
You can try using a program like WinRAR and right click on the PC exe, you may see an option to extract the files, if you do chances are you'll gain access to the cab files. Things like the ROM updates work this way.
Sometimes this method doesn't work. Then you may need to install the program on your PC. You'll need to look on your C drive for the folder the program creates, generally this will be with in the C:\Program Files\ folder or the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Activesync\ folder. This folder can be easy or hard to find.
Another method is to set Pocket File explorer to "Show all files" (you'll need to tap and hold on the white space at the bottom of the page, and select this option from the menu that pops up.) Then go to \My Device\Windows\AppMgr\Install\ and wait for the file to appear here when you first install it. Note that in WM5 you are generally asked if you wish to install the program, DO NOT ANSWER THIS QUESTION instead go to pocket file explorer and look at the \My Device\Windows\AppMgr\Install\ folder your cab should be here, after it is installed it will be deleted from this folder and some times cabs are partly deleted in the install process. (it maybe necessary to install two or more programs at the same time to get a working copy of your program cab file.

Im pretty new here and just got my BA not tooo long ago...I used to be a trreo user now im hooked on my BA.
I see alot of software that comes in a form of a cab file...does anyone know how I can load that software on my BA? thanks alot!
hey mate and welcome!
if you put the cab file in your pc folder; you'll see that the description is "zip file"....that's because it's the only format microsoft recognizes...in a way its also true as the cab file is a compiled program ready for installation. what you do is DON'T unzip the file in your pc; rather cut/copy and paste it directly in your ba (via activesync or in your sd card). put it in a folder that's easy to find; say "my documents...personal" (or you can make your own folder to put in cab files). use your ba's file explorer and go to the folder...from there double click (via stylus) on the cab file and it will automatically install itself. btw, if you copied the cab file in your sd card you can also execute the installation there....no need to paste it in your my documents area.
if you're using wm2005; upon execution the unit will ask you if you want to install it in the sd card or internal memory....that's really up to you depending on the size of the file you're installing.
hope that helps

thanks alot Robson.
Ive always looked past cab file programs b/c i couldnt install it. I hope this thread helps other newbies too. I searched and couldnt find an answer.
is there anyway that can install cab files direct from pc to ppc?
sorry for the late response; was in china for a week.
unfortunately, no. i don't think there's a way to install cab files via pc. if you do unzip a cab file; you'll notice that the files are something like:
0000124
009890
or something like that....can be as many as 20 lines of code...but scanning through the entire zip will not give you any .exe files which can be executed via pc. if you have a card reader installed on your laptop, simply copy and paste the cab file on your sd and from there install via your ppc
hope that helps

Hey all,
I am trying to change the wait symbol animation on my PPC, and have read up on it, but all the directions say I need to copy the gwes.exe.0409.mui from the windows folder, modify it, and overwrite the old one with the modified. Unfortunately, I can't even copy it out of the windows folder. Seems like no one can get it to work very well.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-270645.html
Does anyone know how I can copy and then overwrite the file?
Come on, I know someone here must know how to do this.
use a program like gsfinder+
Hey Sleuth,
I've tried using GSFinder+ and Resco File Explorer. On both programs, it will let me use the copy command, but when I try to paste it in another folder it says that the file cannot be copied. Any ideas?
Basically, I'm hoping there's an easier way to get at the file than dumping the whole ROM.
Same problem here, any ideas?
So, I used to have a tytn2, and played with it a bit, so I am familiar with how to put cab files on it, etc.
I'm stumped right now... because I have my new pro 2, and when I download the program, it is supposed to show up as a cab file, when I unzip it. But actually, when I unzip it, I just am seeing several files, such as one ending in xml, and then another one or few ending with 000, or 001, 002, etc.
From what I remember, when I used to put the cab files onto my tytn2, I would just unzip whatever the program was, and I could see a cab file there, which I would then transfer to my device and then run.
What in the world am I doing wrong here?
Help would be super appreciated!
problem solved
problem solved, im an idiot. for some reason my system is showing the cab file as a zip file which wants to be unzipped. so i've not realized that i've been double clicking cab files, and then winzip is showing me the insides of those files.
= )
So I take it you just changed the file name from zip to cab?
Either that or he has the file explorer on his computer set to hide known extensions. Cab files are recognized as compressed file formats by many handlers like 7zip. Which is why he might have confused the icon for a zip file if he couldn't see the file extension.
