Buttons on Cingular 8125 - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

I hear that you guys had a program that can make the two softkey buttons on the front of a Cingular 8125 so that when you hold them down they either go to the start menu of close a program. Also I havent bought the phone yet and I was wondering how you dial on the phone without the voice command since there are no number buttons on the front.

yes I to would like to know how to customize the soft keys

Yep, I just installed it on my 2-day-old 8125, and it's making a world of difference. SO much more usable now, especially with one hand. Available here if you are logged in:

Its customization is quite nice, in that the close functionality can be customized per-program to either close or hide. (Although either way you'll want to download any of the various programs that allow you to really close things.)

Tap the screen with your fingernail. That's pretty much the only option AFAIK unless if you are holding it sideways with the keyboard open. I don't really find it a problem for dialing, since I'm dialing a stored number 99% of the time anyway. But kind of a pain when typing in key selections while on a call, e.g. w/ customer support. For that I usually go to speakerphone anyway, which makes it easier to tap.

Start bar on keyboard

hi guys , i know this might seem a strange question but like most my stylus is loose in the holder and i sometimes need to use the keyboard to do most things on the unit and i cant find anywhere that activates the start option on the screen. I have done it by accident once but nothing since. i have checked the manual and it mentions it no where all operations seem to be around the stylus?
does anyone know what key combination it is ?
I have a 02 phone and unlike tmobile which has a one of the 4 buttons on front setup to do this as one of the defaults.
cheers in advance
It should be ctrl+escape on a full keyboard. It might also be enabled by the windows or context menu keys, not sure what your keyboard looks like.
You can use my VJKeypress to get this as well. I think it's keycode 91, not sure, check my website.

Im talking about the blue angel, xda 2s keyboard thanks you for reply im not talking normal pc keyboard it does not have ctrl esc or alt on 02 xda 2s keyboard
Sorry! I've never seen a BlueAngel keyboard

Why not assign one of the hardware buttons to do this, each one can have a duel function assigned either a tap or hold, according to the phone, in reality this doesn't work (unless anyone knows different - latest O2 ROM - not messed around with), whatever you set for a tap is also carried accross to the hold function, go to settings and locate the power buttons icon select it, then select the button you want (ok for example) then assign the <Start Menu> from the drop down box, press OK, the device might want a soft reset (mine did when I just tried this), when it comes back up hit the assigned button, and use the four way thumb control to navigate through the menus, it saves sliding out the keyboard and it becoming loose - Mike
cheers for this when i tried to reassign buttons before like the camera it wouldnt let me change them ..i hate the camera button getting accidently caught same as the record one as well.
cheers for the advance will do that would just like to know for my own peace of mind as well how to use the keyboard to do it, it should be possible.

Questions about new Dash

I'm trying out a T-Mobile Dash as a replacement for my MDA, which did not survive a ride on the top of the car. Some things have me really confused:
1. Is there a way to get to the voicedial feature in less than 11 keypresses? Is there a way to put it on the quicklist? (The MDA had a button.)
2. After some period of time, selecting the voicedial feature through the start menu only returns me to the today screen. I have to power off and power on the device to get it to work again.
3. I have assigned a speed dial number to voicedial, so in theory one keypress could get me there. But it too returns me to the today screen; I'm guessing the problem here is whatever is going on with #2.
4. Is there a way to reorder the icons in the start menu so that things I use would be on the first page?
5. Is there a way for a bluetooth headset to call up the voicedial feature?
6. Is there a source of further documentation on some of the features of the phone, like voicedial, speeddial, the port on the bottom, and so on. The T-mobile manual on the disk is pretty thin.
7. The manual skips the power button and talks about taking the battery out to soft-reset the device. But it looks like the power button does a soft-reset. Do they do separate things?
8. Is there a trick to dialing with the number keys I am missing? Sometimes, dialing the numbers pulls up contacts based on the 2-abc, 3-def convention, and sometimes it pulls up contacts based on 2-e, 3-r, etc convention. I can't figure out how to control that.
9. In Messaging, I've set the device to download headers only. When I see a message I want to read, I can toggle the message to download the body "next time you connect and receive e-mail." However, this only seems to work if you connect and receive e-mail while the message is open (that is, one by one). I don't seem to be able to select several messages to be downloaded and do them all at once.
10. If you miss a call, you get a missed-call icon on the top line. How can you clear this icon?
There are some things about this device that are way better than the MDA, like the "Internet Sharing" way of using it as a modem for a laptop.
Yes. RTFM. For VoiceDial hold the home key.
Everything you took the time to type is pretty much covered in the 'thin' manual...

Thanks for the response. Actually, I can't find this in the T-Mobile manual, and it doesn't work on my phone.
more tips
i have been using the smt5600 and have found that the charging cables from boxwave seem to work fine. what i can't seem to find anywhere is an adaptor from the mini usb to a 3.5mm audio plug for connectiong to travel speakers?

Repurposing the volume up/down buttons?

i really miss hardware scroll buttons.
on the rhodium there are two little side buttons for adjusting the volume. i'd really like to repurpose these as scroll up/down. For example, to work inside a browser. Unfortunately, there is no standard option (i can find) to redefine the purpose of these buttons.
i'm hoping there's another way. eg registry hack etc.
thanks for any help,
Use AEBPlus
I am doing exactly the same thing with my Volume Up/Volume Down, I've turned them into arrow keys. The lack of these is my biggest annoyance with the TP2.
That said, I have noticed a little flakiness - most of the time they work fine, but sometimes I hit them and they don't scroll as I expect. Then a moment later they start working.
Anyway, it's much better than not having them re-assigned.
Incidentally, AEBPlus has a cool feature where you can tell it not to remap the Volume keys when you're on a call, so they can still be used then.
Thanks for the tip, i'll give it a go!
AEBPlus works? I'll try it. heard from another TP2 user that it caused his device to freeze up resulting in a hard reset...

Been OK for me so far
Yes, AEB Plus works (no hard reset), but I can only add the windows button. The <-- (back) button does not work when mapped using AEB Plus.
Also, if you're using the JBed Midlet manager, the arrow keys automatically scroll up and down. It works well with Opera Mini.
AEB plus does nothing for me... i just have a list of buttons I can't do anythign with, a giant memory leak and crashing.

Yeah there appears to be no way to open an entry from the list using touch alone - must be a bug.
Highlight one of the buttons in the list, flip out your keyboard and then press enter/return. It will open the Edit menu where you can assign that button to something.

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! lol, I was wondering why people were talking so much about an app that does nothing
Did you guys install to main memory? I had no problems with AEB Plus on my 1.19.707.2 ROM.
I could assign the vol up/down keys and could also add the windows key. It is a bit tricky using the windows key as the first press brings up the programs tab.
I added the back key also, but couldn't get it to work. I didn't touch the send and end keys.
BTW, I used AEBPlus v2661

This all is my biggest concern upgrading from a Tilt.. I REALLY like hardware buttons, and make extensive use of AEButtonPLus as it is...

Press the entry in the list and keep holding for a few seconds more.
I've been using it since I had my touch hd and it works perfectly and I haven't found it to cause any issues.
Personally i assign one volume button to a task switcher (spb ms3 task manager) which makes multi-tasking far easier. You can then map double clicking to the original volume functions and even long hold to something else useful such as comm manager.
Awesome Tip. AEBplus Confirmed to be working fine on TP2 from T-Mobile (still stock rom for now). I made the volume buttons map to up and down like suggested but also made a long hold for volume up do "enter/activate" and a long hold for down do rotate the display.
my phone (telus rom) keeps getting screwed up when I install AEBplus and gets back to normal when I undo it.

A reliable phone lock required

Having found out that my phone has made an international call (lucky it only lasted 34secs) is there a reliable key lock that doesn't involve setting a password? Why wasn't the HD designed so you have to press 2 keys (like most mobiles I've ever used) to get it active - or maybe it is and I just haven't find the combo yet.
Bad design I think as the amount of times I've turned the darn thing back on when putting into my pocket....I've lost count.
Anyway, what works for you?
Cheers
Graham
There's the usual power button... which should be good enough, but if not... just hold down the call 'end' key (hang up button), that should invoke the regular windows lock screen that doesn't require a password, just two key presses.
i use s2u2 and the standard lock on phone.
and i use tweakhd.
i know what happened.
when u receive a message, or a reminder the phone unlocks. it happened a couple of times to me. the phone is in my pocket and i press the screen with my leg and it starts calling.
solutions:
add a name in your addresslist, call it AAAAAA , with no phonenumber.
clear your "last call list" often
use s2u2
use the standard phone lock with pincode
use tweakhd ( you can adjust the unlock-mode when receiving a message)
i am sure its too much, but for me it works.
in s2u2 i add the option: unlock phone when pulling out the stylus. then i have to give my pincode.
good luck.
lockdevice...
i have been using this on my hd ,for a while ..had a bit of problems with earlier versions ...but last few ,versions have been working very smoothly.. .(.indeed
worth to try... )

Thanks for all the replies...but I've gone with TheBrilliantMistake suggestion....... not 100% but a vast improvement on just pushing the power button. I never even knew you could hold the end call key.....no mention in my phone handbook. Live and learn!
Thanks everybody...this is a great forum!
This problem is a pain in the butt. Get PocketShield and it will solved all your problems but it cost $14.99
You can also try this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=556801
It disables the "end" and "answer" hardware keys.

End Call -> Home Screen

Maybe it's just me but I would like to go to my home screen when I end a call instead of back to the dialer/phone. I searched but couldn't find anything on that.
Anyone know how to do this or care to figure it out?
This is too easy....press the hardware End key?
You may want to elaborate if this isn't what you're after...

I take it you're like me and you spam the end key about 5 times at the end of a call?

Ok now I feel stupid. Thanks though, I would probably never have thought of that on my own.
Is it possible to get the onscreen end key to do the same?
I made a post with a similar problem a while back and had no replies to fix it.
The contents are as follows:
Tilt2, End call, looking at contacts! Why?
Tilt2: If i get a call and hit the end call button, why am i left looking at my contacts. It ONLY happens on incoming calls. If i end call on a call i made, from within my contacts, it goes back to the main screen!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=574970
My problem is that i use spb mobile shell and after i end the call, the phone relocks. When i later unlock the phone, i am still looking at the contacts.
Ok I don't feel so stupid. Hardware key does the exact same thing as soft key. Phone isn't fast enough to hit it twice in succesion and lock the screen in one fluid motion so I go back to my original request.
Anyone know how to get it to go from end call (soft or hard butotn) directly to home screen instead of to the dialer?

Not sure if it has anythign to do with it or not, but might it have something to do with the phone asking if you want to add them to your contacts and maybe you are inadvertantly hitting somethign sending you to your contacts?
I've not had any issue with it pulling up my contacts unless I accidently hit something.
Whoops, should read:
My problem is that i use S2U2 and after i end the call, the phone relocks. When i later unlock the phone, i am still looking at the contacts.
Im am positive i am not hitting anything on the screen because sometimes i hit the talk and speaker phone, then use the end call button. We have 2 of these and both do the same thing. It only happens if the phone was locked to start with. If the phone is not locked (figured this out playing them), once i end the call, the contacts screen will go away in 10 seconds or so.

Try this. Hit the End key and then the Back key in quick succession. This will bring you to your last opened window. If you didn't have any active windows, this will bring you back to your home screen.
