Windows Mobile "XDA Live"
for HTC Hermes
I have applied my XDA Live Scripts to the "Vanilla" edition of Windows Mobile 6 for Hermes.
So I present you with Version 0.10 of XDA Live!
Click here for Images of all the Themes I have collected. I've decided that instead of embedding them all, I will remove all but the default Crossbow Theme and add the Aero Theme.
The rest of the collection will be made available via my website this week.
I have integrated the following Applications:
Dictionary Editor
HTweakC v2.1
MS Hearts for PPC
PHM Registry Editor
SMS Backup
StartClean
VJCandelaLite (Flashlight)
Windows Mobile Remote Display (CERDISP)
Fixes Specific to using "Vanilla" Base Rom
Office Mobile Folder and shortcuts are restored
Remote Desktop Mobile has been embedded
I have integrated the following Registry Fixes:
By default only the Date Plugin is enabled (and it is set to a single line).
The Today Screen says "XDA Live" and the about screen shows " - XDA" after the OS Build Number.
Pressing & Holding the Comm Button toggles the between Vibrate & Normal.
PDAViet Memory Leak Fix is Applied.
Disabled the warning for Unsigned Applications (Application Lock)
Misc:
I have added two "Classic RingTones, (OldPhone-US.wma and OldPhone-UK.wav) for those of us who want to get away from the music and chirping Ringers.
I have removed all carrier customizations, no need to soft reset to avoid customization!
Please let's keep this thread clean. This will aide in getting things fixed/added as quickly as possible.
If you just want to chatter go to one of the two other threads for this Rom (see the end of the FAQ a few posts down). I will leave only one thread sticky but it will always contain links to all "Official" Thread for the Rom.
Confirmed Issues:
Known Issues:
Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) is broken.
Keyboard Backlight Sensor turned off by default.
Turn Off Wi-Fi link is missing from "Connections Bubble".
WiFi enabled on Boot (WiFi Init) is missing.
The following are missing:
ClearVue PDF Viewer.
Cyberon Voice Dialer.
Internet Calling (VOIP).
MSN. (Note this is replaced my MS Live! and wil not be grafted into this Rom)
Note Recorder (including ability to press & Hold to record).
Video Call.
Push To Talk.
SetHSDPA.exe
Add 8525 Keyboard Fix Cab into Rom. (you must install it but it will be there for you now)
Smart Dialer.
Microsoft Live! Mobile. (until there is a real release I will consider installing from the desktop as the fix for this, once there is an official release of WLM or A WM6 Rom that includes it this will become embedded)
Windows Mobile Update.
The WMXL Team is working hard to get these integrated into the Rom.
Items in GREEN are finished for the next release. I would like to time 0.x dot releases at least 1 week apart so expect WMXL v0.20 on March 5th (2007 of course) which will include all verified fixes as of March 3rd.

Official FAQ...
Q: How do I install it.
A: The self extracting archive will run the RUU after it extracts all files. I used The XDA RUU which was modified to push the Des Bootloader to your device. This Installer does not require your device to be SuperCID and should work with all bootloader versions. This installer only has a HTC Splash Screen and the OS, No radio or Ext_ROM.
Q: Will WMXL (Windows Mobile XDA Live) fix my corrupted radio bootloader or otherwise bricked Hermes?
A: If the other tools here can't do it then don't bet the farm on WMXL doing it. The Flashing tools are still the same, no magic pill here.
Q: Kyphur you are such a Guru, how can I be like you?
A: Remember that my head is in the clouds on this one only because I'm standing on the shoulders' of giants. This project owes it's very existence to many other contributers here and they deserve as much if not more of the cudos than I do. The is a team effort, please support everyone who made this possible. (See my post here). I have been a member her for only 15 months give or take but I have spent more time reading than doing or posting.
Q: Can you release Cab file updates instead of cooking new Roms to flash?
A: I will do both. For example coming soon with be WMXL Update Cabs for Internet Calling, Video Calling, SetHSDPA and Windows Live! Mobile (for example). These will all be embedded into WMXL v0.2. I'm doing this to save you from having to flash you device as often as I am. Remember the Cab files will consume Program Memory whereas the new Rom releases will not.
Q: If you embed a program into the Rom how can I remove it (to save memory).
A: You can't remove file that are in the Rom. You can remove the Shortcuts to the programs. Again I will repeat that programs in the Rom do not consume any memory. If you don't want the program simply ignore it and it will not harm you.
Q: Will you still release the scripts?
A: Of course, I have spent the evening building and testing this Rom for Release. Expect this to delay the release of the How-To but it is still coming.
Q: Will you still release a version based on the original Rom (from your unnamed source).
A: Sort of. There will be a release either based on the Original Base Rom (Rom-X) or an Official Released Carrier Rom. This is why I used scripts to make the Mods to the Rom file, I had a working Rom on the Vanilla Base 20 minutes after I downloaded it. I spent most of last night making sure it was stable before releasing.
Q: Why do my recent programs keep disappearing on every reset?
A: That is StartClean. If you don't want this then simply delete the shortcut from your Startup Folder.
Q: I have more questions...
A:The Original Discussion Thread, The Original Release Thread.

This Rom really is a group effort.
Without pof & team unlocking I never would have even gone looking for the base Rom.
aChef by aklok_hk is doing the heavy lifting.
Sleuth255, ShogunMark, Faria ViJay555, Bepe, Maimach have all been instrumental either directly or indirectly in this project.
Des and the SSPL was another step that got me to this point.
Olipro's RUU Workshop was used to make the installer package.
Of course there are all of the guys who have been doing this before I bought my first PPC Phone, they blazed the trail I simply walk behind them.
Finally, I can't forget my unnamed source. They took a big change passing this along to me. Even though this relase is built on the Vanilla Rom, without that trust I wouldn't have been able to spend that previous week cooking with a WM6 Rom Image.
If I missed someone I apologize, just PM me and I'll update the list.

I also noticed the lack of "turn off wifi", and sadly another little problem: When the device come out of standby and was previously connected to a wifi acces point it is unable to connect again automatiquely. I can either turn off/on wifi to solve this, or simply manualy go in options and force the connection to the acces point I want.
What is in fact the smartdialing? I have so far the same functionnality with wm2006 I had with wm2005 and smartdialing. I don't see what is missing

Disabling the auto light sensing. This is a real bother where the light does not come up sometimes when you hit a key in the keyboard. I don't know if it is possible to disable it by default.

I'll look for the registry key and add it to the initial registry (if I can).

I tried unchecking the tick box and this allowed the removable drive to install.
Unfortunately, I couldn't browse the directory structure though - it just shows it as blank. I did get a directory listing once but it then froze.
I also tried installing Card Export II but this just hung when I tried to browse the card.
I've noticed that the device locks while sending mail. That is, for a couple seconds during the process, scrolling is disabled and the buttons have no effect on the interface at all. Then, when it wakes back up, all input is executed, including scrolling and button presses. Any ideas?
This is with the default Vanilla ROM, I should mention - I am about to upgrade to XDA Live 0.1 now.
Definitely ADOBE.
ClearVue doesn't work with many pdf.
I'm trying out PocketXpdf which is an opensource reader, footprint is much smaller which would leave us more room for other items. But this could become a user preference item really, didn't know if that should have been there or not but I'm fine with installing on my storage card since its not a huge deal.
Here's a tweaked developer version of lvsw's CE 5.2.1413 Build 17913.0.3.0 ROM
note: this ROM is an advanced graft containing XIP components from Hermes, Universal and Wizard WM6 builds and as such is unique to XDA Developers. M$ has not released these components all in one place for Hermes yet. Some confusion has come up surrounding this when Shadowmite noticed that coredll.dll was reporting a different CE build than what was being shown in settings->about. Its no fake. This Rom's Universal base components are reporting CE 5.2.1413 there.
Now to my stuff. I'm an imgfs chef, so I've improved the GUI a bit...
v1.0 of this ROM includes:
Everything in lvsw's base ROM
GLYPHCACHE limt re-optimized at 32,768
Mobile Office 2K7
My ATI Imageon patch cooked in
HTC X-Button v1.5 cooked into the base ROM
Windows Live cooked into the base ROM
4MB Paging File
Big Storage
A2DP optimized for highest Fidelity (A2DP patch is not included).
additional apps: GSFinder+, DotFred's Taskmgr, PHM Regedit, SIPChange, Austinboy's Fieldtest
VoIP optimizatons: dialplan normalized for US calling (default areacode is 262 on 7 digit calls), connect over 3G as well as WiFi enabled
Live Search today plugin is set to use Google and works just fine when spaces are part of the search term
can toggle the phone skin between Video and Non-video modes using lsvw's TweakUI program
There are massive Bluetooth stack improvements in the build. The "Invalid URL" issue when streaming music over 3G has been fixed. And, you really can stream audio from 3G to A2DP while in powersave mode on this ROM.
As always, because its targeted at developers, this version has the Extrom hidden and all customizations are disabled on initial start.
Free storage memory is about 49MB and free program memory is 29MB. Displayed Today screen items have been reduced and re-ordered in this manner (note: the additional plugins are still present, just unchecked in Today settings):
Date
Live Search
Internet Calling
Owner Info
Email messages
Appointments
The installer will also upgrade your splash screens to the "Sun Rising over the earth" HTC theme from page 1. Your Radio, IPL and SPL will remain unchanged. This is a SSPL only installer so you must be connected with ActiveSync. Then, just execute and it'll take about 5 minutes to install. Vista users: be sure to check out this guide for how to make SSPL installers work on your version of Windows.
Download v1.0 now from RapidShare.

v1.0 Release Notes (check back here periodically for updates)
Here are the known issues:
when you delete the last note in OneNote it doesn't refresh the list and the note appears to not be deleted until you restart OneNote again.
On the Today screen, X-Box changes the font on SPB weather and SPB Time to Black (only happens if "Enable Today X button" is selected). SPB has posted a fix for SPBWeather here
Unable to add programs to the X-Box exclusive list without reghacks. Fixed! Kudos to vp3G for uncovering the fix. Download the attached cab and be sure to install to your device if asked. This fix will not work if installed to your storage card
However, if you do install the cab, the newly enabled exclusive feature has quirks too: If you actually use this feature by tapping on an app in the Running Programs list, xbutton doesn't restore its icon properly on the today screen. You need to tap start->today to get it to display again.
If only the "Enable the X button to end running programs" option is checked int X-Button, the today screen won't refresh when you change the items unless you SR. The today items work normally if any other combination is selected in the button tab.
My BMW bluetooth handsfree system works great with this version. Very stable and better speaker volume too. Parrot Car Kit owners report varying degrees of success. The Parrot Rhythm 'n Blue system works flawlessly. Nothing yet on Audi handsfree.
Breaking A2DP News!
(Kudos to hardcore on this)
Joint Stereo is properly implemented in this ROM. If your headset supports Joint Stereo, try using lvsw's TweakUI program to set the following values:
JointStereo = 1
CurrentBitPool = 86
MaxBitPool = 86
Jaw dropping audio! Downside is that I get an occasional skip with these settings. YMMV for sure. Try the joint stereo setting first then tweak away at the bitpool settings. Out of the box, this ROM is set to automatically go to 70 if it can.
note: If your headset doesn't support Joint Stereo you won't be able to connect after applying these settings.
RE: 3G streaming in powersave mode.
The only application I've found that can do this so far is GreenSoftware's Freeware GSPlayer. It can also play mp3's in powersave mode.

Does this have the cyberon vc and if so can it be uninstalled via the remove programs?
*fingers crossed*
masterful creation refined by the master himself.. good job sleuth
Great job Sleuth!
Typically I'm not one to post silly "Great Job"'s but this one is a great job! Very stable and responsive, with obvious attention to detail.
Extended ROM
Sleuth, I see some extended ROM files, I assume they are yours (?): Windows Live, X-Button, mHub-player, ..
You already included these files in your ROM, why add them to the extended ROM? (I know they aren't automatically installed after a hardreset.)
By the way: love it, seems fast and stabile and much free memory.
Perhaps for the next version also a tweak like HTweakC?
Any way of tidying up the 3G icon?
Have only been able to find the Black Clean Icon Patch but this doesn't seem to work with this release.
Apart from this minor cosmetic niggle, this is a very slick rom.
Well done & thanks Sleuth
Sleuth, great ROM.
I love the VoIP optimized part. By the way, just to share my settings: I use my own Asterisk box to get calls through and I added this rule on the dial-plan:
<!-- Universal rules -->
<rule pattern="(\d+)" dial="sip:\[email protected]$host$" display="\1" transfer="sip:\[email protected]$host$" />
In my phonebook, I have all the number updated as "+<country>-<TEL>". It works fine for normal wireless call with t-mobile and cingular, and the asterisk know what to do with the '+'.

I'm curious to see how many people are using the file-based registry with whatever version of WM6. Please post any thoughts you might have on performance or otherwise...
Well it appears this question hasn't exactly set the Forum on fire. Does a File-based Registry make any difference at all in WM6?
I've automatically carried this feature forward from my WM5 days, but I'd be curious to know what people think!
file based registry
Given that the registry is typically read from a flat file at the bottom of the stack anyway, I don't get this question. Any links to MSDN docs on this new feature?
At the risk of sounding even less technical than I am, it's my understanding that with a Hive-based registry, every soft reset effectively resets the the registry to the OEM defaults. Changes seem to take a long time to get written to the registry in the hive model.
It had been my experience (and my reading) that switching to the file-based model ensured that all changes are preserved across soft resets.
If I'm misunderstanding (which is entirely possible), please somebody let me know...

yes and no... Coders are 'required' to perform a 'flush' of the registry hive after modifying it, this then writes the changes to flash... if this is not performed then simply resetting the device after changing the registry will not work... but a routine flush is run every 5 minutes or so i believe by the OS
also, doing a manual power down (press/hold power button then tap yes for shutdown message) will flush the changes as well.
@Walsh & @Sleuth, so your opinions/recommendations on Hive vs. File are?

Thank you, gentlemen!
It sounds like File may help compensate for bad coding practices, but it may not be worth it
Goestoeleven, do you happen to use cleartype in landscape?
Im still using twkcl to keep the settings, and I remember reading in the past that with the registry file based that the cleartype tweak would stick for people, also you can limit the PIE cache in the registry, but that is another that doesnt stick, wondering if goin to file based would keep those settings, Ive never checked into it myself.
Sorry, but I'm not a ClearType user (always seems blurry to me).

Actually, I would tend not to think about bad coding practices. It's just a matter of technological evolution.
Back in the times when we were still using PocketPC - pre WM era, you don't ever need to flush the registry at all since everything's stored in RAM when there was no persistent storage. You must give it power anytime anywhere. The registry would still be there even if you reboot it both by normal software reset approach or by pressing the reset button. The RAM always keep the contents no matter what.
This was rather painful since WM5 devices came in 2 flavors, some earlier ones without persistent storage, while later ones got it. For those with persistent storage, the device effectively became a desktop computer - if you rush to reset your computer by pressing the reset button instead of using the restart command, I am sure files and many stuff would gone, not to mention registry settings. The same applies to WM5+ devices with persistent storage.
Because of this, developers need to modify their programs to call the registry flush function to make sure everything's saved. This is something that takes time for every developers to become aware of this issue and fix it.
M$ really should take up some of the responsibilities. A program is WM5-compatible even if it doesn't flush - since those devices w/o persistent storage that uses RAM-based registry don't have to. But when the same program is running on a device equipped with persistent storage and with hive based registry, it fails to flush and hence cause all the confusions amongst users and developers.
Back to the issue that which one is better, I am assure you that RAM-based registry is BAD in terms of performance. In this mode, any call to flush will cause the entire registry to be written to storage. If say all programmers are all with good WM6 programming practice, performance would definitely be an issue. On the other hand, hive based registry uses memory mapper IO and only the affected data would be written to storage if flushed.
That's why M$ made hive based the default for WM6. In a MSDN article it also said that it does not support the use of RAM-based registry. But I am not quite sure of what they mean by "not support the use" - it probably means that you can't even change the registry type to RAM-based anymore.
Reference:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa910532.aspx
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa910676.aspx
BTW, I think the name "file-based registry" is misleading - first, hive based registry is still being saved in a file somewhere. Second, M$ calls is RAM-based registry in the current MSDN articles.
I don't know how the term "file-based" comes up - perhaps those tweak* programs invented it?
Forgive me if this is irrelevant to this thread, but ChaoticDruid's post above is kind of related to my problem. I have an HTC P3600. I have used Resco Registry (setting "OffOnRotation" value to 0), TrinityHacks, Tweaks2k2, Sktools, Molski.Biz in order to have cleartype in lansdscape orientation, but none of them worked. After the first soft-reset, cleartype fonts appear on landscape, as they should. But after the second soft-reset they disappear.
By the way, after the first soft-reset, using Resco Registry I noticed that the "OffOnRotation" value is set to 1, even if the cleartype fonts are activated at that time.
Since you refer to registry, I thought you might have a solution to this problem. If anyone knows how to fix this, please let me know.
P.S. Notice that I even waited for 5 minutes and then I pressed-and-hold the hardware on/off button (as far as I know this is the only way to save any changes before a soft-reset).
Thanks!

please do not ask for cabs as i dont have the time to pack them...in my opinion if you want a clean rom then you should have all your apps ready. thanks

This is really nice best wm 6.1 rom out !!!!!! Thanks Faria
Impationtly waiting
My method to resolve the Hard Reset issue with BigStorage ROM's...
Download and run the official AT&T 3.52 ROM (I tried the officila Dopod ROM that contained my required 1.47 radio but I still HR'ed with two different ROM's)
(note: Place the PDA into bootloader mode by holding OK & Power Buttons while soft reseting with your stylus first)
Flash Olipro's HardSPL7
Find your preferred Radio and flash. I have the best luck with 1.47.30.10 myself here in South Florida. 1.54 on WM6.1's takes FOREVER to aquire a signal, and battery life is great (at least with the 6 or so Faria Clean WM6.1's Im supporting personally)
Then flash your WM6.1.
Yes this IS a real PIA but it's worth it to me not to have a HR, especially when I'm on the phone!
Since I've been doing it THIS way I've yet to have a Hard Reset., YMMV of course
won't work
sorry for my noobishness but the updateutility.exe don't start...
I have been waiting for this. Was going to flash with the last build but then hints of this one was released so I waited.
Thanks to Faria for the ROM and Dr. P. for the support.

I am having the same issue. Downloaded, extracted, and changed the page pool, but the update .exe will not start. Restarted the computer and tried it again without changing the page pool, but still no luck.

thanks!
uploading new rom with fixed update utility.
Faria, Great Rom , i love it . The only thing i miss is the Dialpad, i really liked the old one.
I stopped using the upload utility, i have Windows vista and i allways use the Micro Sd Card Rom Update method.
oops. I updated to spl-2.60 OLIpro before I flashed. During the flash I recieved an error and now........ The tri-color screen and it will not connect to activesync.
After a few minutes of playing I like the speed - noticable improvements over 6.0.
One point to mention is a bunch of extra "stuff" in the Office Mobile folder under Start Menu. Not sure if this is by design, but it was a suprise to see them in there. In particular: Contacts, Calendar, Adobe Reader LE, and a link to My Documents. I can see where grouping these may be for ease of use, but I just wanted to point it out.
The other is how button 5 is mapped for "quick". It currently has a "\" and errors when pushed. I presume this is so and the user needs to install their target program or remap accordingly?
Otherwise, a very nice build. Even PIM Backup runs very fast - a good benchmark for me to tell if it's a good one
any suggestions on how to get out of this tri-color screen.
Hey there
I just installed Spb Finance on my blackstone with duttys R14 and when I open the spb finance entry app (already modified for my resolution with the dskin file) it shows error: Can not initialize main dialog!
Does anyone else encounter this?
Is there a way to fix that?
Thanks
same problem here.. any solutions?
I also have the problem...
... my machine is a HTC Diamond 2 with a newly loaded Win 6.5 ROM. Before SPB Finance was running without problems. Has somebody any idea? Thanks!
So it seems to be a problem with all WM6.5
Known problem in WVGA devices, not just 6.5! You need to search the SPB main site and download a new skin for this finance entry sub-program. This may be in the "Sticky" section of the Pocket Finance forum. Hope this helps.
Alan
Folks, I have been using SPB Finance v2.8.0 fine up to Dutty's Leo R4, which runs on wm6.5. It also ran fine with 6.1 stock and various cooked roms. Never had the problem you've mentioned.
Found this
Alan
I've already tried everything, but without any success - same error msg. I use XTROM GridLeo 1.8.1. Before that, I've had the original WM6.1 rom and after fixing d_skin file it did work. But now, it doesn't.
thanks Alanjp3. it is vga skin, but works.
While the skin worked with my Sprint HTC Touch Pro2 on the WM6.1 Rom, it does NOT work on the WM6.5 ROM.
SPB does not support this product any more.
Has anyone here got a solution on how to run this on a 6.5 ROM?
Thanks folks!!
try winmoFinance....very simple app, gives you what you need...
I changed to that and am OK for the basic money in my pocket tracking
same problem for me too so i changed for Inesoft Cash Organizer.

Yes, that's what I'm using now as well. Works great, though I have one little gripe: In order to see my balances through the today plugin: does anyone know what the shortcut / command parameter to that is? It's so much faster than to have to open the whole program to see the balance.
Another thing: With Cash Organizer I seem to have to buy the program each time I change devices. Is that normal, or am I doing something wrong?
Tried other options too, like WinMoFinance - but it doesn't do what I need it to do. I need to sync 2 PPCs with MSMoney, and the Quick Entry screen is a must by now.
Thanks to all who keep looking!
spbFinance seems to work, sort of
Facing similar problems in upgrading to HD2, I enquired of spb and got this helpful answer that might be of use to others:
"Unfortunately SPB Finance has not been updated for several years, and currently I am not able to promise that it will be updated soon.
SPB Finance does not fully support recent Windows Phones, like HTC HD2. The main application will basically work, but the additional one SPB Finance Entry will not."
I haven't ever used the SPB Finance Entry route, so I stand a chance of getting the main program to work, especially if using a DAgi stylus.
The Cash Organiser program generates a Product ID number that is keyed to the PDA, probably not the Owner Name as lot of product ids do (in which case it would be portable if you use the same owner name) ore likely the PDA UUID in which case it is a new Reg Key for each PDA. That makes it pretty difficult when it comes to upgrading machines so I give software with that kind of protection a miss.
Yup, Inesoft's Cash Organizer is out for us too.
- I change devices often (also have my weekend diamond), and I would have to write in and have them send me a new key each time I change my device. A no go for me.
-the program has at times trouble syncing and when it sees conflicts, just creates a fictitious account on the pda. And even when I erase the account, is keeps it in it's guts and recreates it each time I try to sync again.
Thank you much for posting your correspondence with spb.
