A. or at least my answer...
Please read these steps before proceeding as this may be destructive to your data.
1. back up all your important data off the phone to your PC or SD Card manually. - DO NOT use any back-up software that may save settings and programs.
2. Do a HARD RESET this restores it to "out of the box" configuration
3. Test your bluetooth and make a back-up of your working system.
4. DON'T restore any settings back-up you may have previously made - this may recreate your issue if you backed up after the bluetooth failed.
5. Restore your settings and programs manualy, testing your bluetooth occasionally and backing up if it is working - this ensures you have not re-installed the guilty Program, if you have restore you last working back-up and avoid the program or setting that broke it.
Remember a hard reset destroys all data on the phones RAM storage (programs and files) so please ensure that you have all the files you need to restore programs and data... you have been warned and I cannot accept responsability for any data lost in this process.
My problem occured after I used the Sim unlock program from this forum.... nothing against the program but in this case you either pay O2 to get the unlock code or you go without bluetooth in my experience.

How can I UPGRADE, but BACKING UP my old files? HELP!!!

My question is if there is a way to back up my files, upgrade the ROM and then returne the files back, but without copying each on. In other words, what is usually done when you want to upgrade your ROM and keep your existing files + contacts and calendar entries, tasks etc.
Thank You in advance for your co-operation :!:
when you upgrade, all your non-synchronized files, contacts, reminders,,,etc will be lost!
Since the device makes synchronization everytime you dock it in the cradle, no worries about losing contact & other data, cause once you upgrade & resync the data with outlook, everything will return back to the device from outlook.
But be careful that all programs installed on the device, along with their data, WILL BE LOST upon upgrading the device!!
You need to reinstall the programs after upgrading..!
As an advice,, always make FULL backup of the device prior to upgrading it! In case any problem occured or you just remembered that you forgot to save some data, you can easily restore your old system..
You can also use commercial software to backup your data, and selectively restore the database(s) you want. Sprite Pocket Backup has worked fine for me for the last few years, and its exceptionally faster than the builtin utilities.

Advice required for a complete device backup

Hello guys,
Me & my girlfriend both using (O2 Ignito) Diamond, and somehow she is messing-up the device every month and I have to hard-reset her device and spend a whole 3 continous hours on installing and configuring her Diamond.
Can someone PLEASE Tell me / Guide me how can I make a "COMPLETE backup (including StorageCard software installaions and Registry)" of her device after installing everyyyyyything, and then every month just run the automated restore process.
1. Keep it in mind that during the configuration & installation I am also editing few bits in the registry for example changing the AC_S2U2 setting etc., I want all of the registry to backed-up as well.
2. I am also installing some big softwares on the StorageCard e.g. SPB Online which is 12mb, so I have to include that in the backup as well.
3. Her Diamond's ROM is the Original O2 Stock Rom (1.93)
I would highly appreciate someone's expert advice.

I would suggest to buy Resco Backup. This peace of software can make a full backup, and if restored to the same ROM as the backup was made, will preserve all settings. Just keep in mind that with a restore you have to check the option Full Restore.
Thanks henk2484,
I will give it a try for this month's restore.

I use SPB Back up 2.0 with no problems.
I create one backup called a clean install after a hard reset with all programs loaded and settings adjusted, and then a back up every month to make sure I save emails and texts etc.

SPB Backup can also be configured to make automatic backups of everything (PIM Data, Emails, My Documents, System Data, Storage Card) or whatever part(s) you choose. You can enable it to run at specified day(s) and time.
What's nice is, it can restore even to a different ROM and/or on a different device, and it creates the backups as .exe file, so you don't have to reinstall the program just to restore. It will do everything.
What works for me: I make manual "Full" backups whenever I install new software. (This takes about 3-4 minutes.) Other than that, every night at 3 o'clock, it automatically makes a backup of my documents, e-mails, and sms. If something bad happens, I hard-reset, restore that big full backup, and restore the latest small "document" backup, everything works out.
Definitely recommended!
Thankyou soo much guys, thats a huge amount of advices, I will definitely try some of these and see which one better.

HTC Restore Problem

Hi guys
I recently factory restored my HTC Desire and the built-in backup prompted me to restore my settings, which I did, but for some reason my SMS messages were not restored.
I checked the SD card, and there is a backup there, but of course the files are encrypted. Is there any way to read these files, or to restore my messaging SMS?
Thanks in advance!
Am I right in saying that the backups's hashes are salted with the device serial #? If that's the case then decryption should be quite possible.
I have had the exact same problem today. Had to return my Desire as it was faulty for a straight swap (kept the same SIM and SD card). The SD card has restored all contacts and music, but SMS messages have not transferred over. I've looked at every possible option in the settings but can't seem to see how to do this.
I'd be grateful for any advice or info. Thankyou.
slightly old thread, but relevant to my problem....
have been playing around a lot with my desire over the past week, and managed to delete the wrong nandroid backup and lost all my sms. I have a sense auto backup form a day or so earlier, but cannot for the life of me get the phone to read these - there's no option to restore just backup.
So, tried factory reset from recovery, copied the 'old' backup to the sd, and booted. Nothing was restored. Have tried all sorts of combos to try and get the backup to be read, but no joy at all. Even completely wiping everything, flashing the original rom i was using (modaco 3.1) and restarting, but still sense doesnt see the backup.
I definitley remember it doing it once during all the crazy rom swopping of the last few days, and the sms, wifi key etc all restored, but I can't get it to do it again.
Any ideas about 'forcing' the restore? I know that the backup is handset specific (tied to the serial/imei?) but it should restore on any rom using sense yeh?
all help greatly appreciated
ta.
another small thought, there may be an app idea in here for anyone thats interested - reading the sense backup and applying it by force? i know quite a few people tend to backup their sd card regularly, so it could be useful as a last resort option.
I guess there's not much I can help you but to avoid this problem in the future you might want to use SMS backup (by Cristoph Studer, there are 2 others on the Market with the same name) - backs up your sms's to your Gmail account, works great. I love the Cloud!
I have used sms backup in the past, didn't bother this time as i had the nandroid backup. Kicking myself as I'm usually pretty careful about what files i'm getting rid of, and have got all my sms for about the last ten yrs (minus the 2 months i just lost) for blackmail purposes time to crank the delete button paranoia up a notch again
edit: solved tok everything off the sd card, made sure i had the backup set from the date range i wanted, wiped absolutely everything from recovery, reflashed the rom i was running when the backup was taken & rebooted. the backup was picked up fine, all settings, sms etc back with no problems.
the small trick to getting this to occur seems to be just let the phone sit for a minute when it reboots - i assume that if you go into the setup wizard before the sd card is correctly moutned and read that you bypass the restore. i had done the same procedure to try to get it to restore before and it didn't, the pause to allow the sd card to be read was the only thing i did differently.
I'm having the same issue, I want to restore a back-up from my SD card, but cannot see any way to do it. I've tried a factory reset, but still no luck.
Can a restore be forced? The 2.2 upgrade seems to have removed Settings>Privacy
Same problem here, Froyo won't restore my backup.
I tried to downgrade to Eclair, but the installation failed with "Error 140: wrong bootloader version".
I guess my backup is pretty useless now...
Frojo wont restore settings after hardreset
I asked HTC about this, and here's the answer:
Thanks for your question regarding backup of your device. The former feature backup to SD card is missing in this newer version. This is due to Google, which has developed backup feature in the software, changed the system in 2.2, then back out to their servers instead. This applies to the Google devices, such as NexusOne. When your device is the HTC brand, we have some backup features as before. However, you can take backup in the following way (as with older versions of Android): Contacts: You can save contacts via Outlook when they are created as telephone contacts. For this you need HTC Sync and Outlook on your computer. HTC Sync, see your device's SD card. To open the map, select Mount in the device, your device is displayed on the computer as an external disk drive. Then you find the program through your computer's Windows Explorer, and also integrates it on your computer. You can now sync. You can also download HTC Sync from our website under Support tab. If you use Google contacts they can be retrieved back when you set up your email again. If you have configured an Exchange server, you can also download contacts onto the device again. Calendar appointments: These are transferred in the same manner as contacts. Emails: These can be synchronized over again through your Exchange server, or if you have Google mail. Data files: These can be transmitted via computer Explorer when you select Mount as previously described. You can then transfer your files to a folder on your computer. SMS and MMS: Those you can not backup.

Way to go HTC.... hurray
The more I learn about Google and HTC's way of handling my data I get more determined to Root my phone to get full access of my phone, and to control what data and in what way that data is transferred to either google or HTC.
When you compare to the way Apple is controlling it's sheep herd, Google is not any better when it comes to data gathering and data sniping.

Backup not possible with previeus build in backup, that is..

migrating from one EVO to a NEW Evo

well long story short... unrelated to anything herein... i have two EVO phones. one is a replacement phone for the current active phone. Sprint sent it to me, cause they couldn't figure out why Google's market wouldn't download apps to my phone. (I solved that problem on my own) but in the mean time i had this replacement phone, so I decided to test things out...
I have fully rooted the test phone, and I am using DamageControl v3.2.3. I installed apps on this phone over wifi.. and started to think that now i need to move my data over from the current active phone.
I have titanium backup paid version. On the test phone, i have backed up the phone going through the root and unlocking of NAND process. Pretty cool application.
I also have "lookout" installed on the active phone, and it is current.
My question is, best i can tell much of the application data seems to be on the SDRAM card. Is that not the case? what data is actually lost during a root proces or NAND unlocking process?
Since Titanium backup requires root access I really can't back up the current phone using that application. I have some backup with the "lookout" application. But i was wondering when the device gets flashed... what exactly is getting writen over.
i see a folder called Mail on the SD card... it is about 50mb... is that where my mail messages are from my different POP3 accounts? on the test phone, all of the mail account settings are not there obviously... but if i add the email accounts will it read the mail from the SDcard created using the other phone?
here is the data I like to migrate over from the rootless phone to the rooted phone.
1. mail messages from about 12 mail accounts
2. Mail account settings
3. layout of the different Sense walls (or whatever they are called) ..you know the faces with all of the icons you see when you look at the phone (there are 7)
4. phone call history
5. SMS messages and history
6. application settings
7. Browser bookmarks (and settings)
i can see my pictures and video are located on my sdram card, but not sure about the above items....
can you help? I am a skilled IT network pro, but not too skilled in the phone's unix like workings... can you help?
There are probably several ways you can do this, but I think it will be easier to accomplish this if you root your rootless phone. Once that phone is rooted you can use titanium or make a nandroid back up and restore on the phone that already has root. Both nandroid backup and titanium backups are saved on the SD card. If rooting is not an option your going to have to look for an app that can make backups without root. There might be one out there but I dont know of any.
it is not clear to me, what exactly is lost when I root. There are warnings that states:
"wipe all of your data so brace for that. backup or what not"
doesn't that mean I will loose user data in step 1 of the toastcfh process before i am able to install (or run) titanium backup?
the warning is not really clear to me exactly what is going on....
I am not against rooting, the rootless phone. Do think Sprint would care if I send them a rooted phone I suppose i could de-root, the rooted phone. I remember seeing somebody having a process for that... not sure.
need some help clearing up some of this... thanks!

Second Space backups, what are our options?

Dear all,
Since at this time TWRP does not seem to work well with any sort of Work Profiles/Users, which Second Space feature from MIUI is, I was wondering if any of you already had reliable backup solutions for all Second Space settings to share?
As far as I remember I always used TWRP backups for my devices when that was possible or even full SP Flash Tools backups, but I never used any backup apps from within Android OS itself because that was not needed.
Being new to MIUI devices too and not had any use for work/user profiles before, I start fresh here when some of you might already have tried a few things on their own, on this device or some other Xioami with Second Space, which worked (to some extent) or not.
If possible that backup solution will not require root, and be FOSS.
It would backup LOCALLY all Second Space userdata + all apps and their own settings (meaning no need to reenter all logins/password or any configuration made for any of those individual apps). There can be an option to backup on the cloud if encryption is available, but option to back up locally is mandatory
It is NOT an issue to have to backup from WITHIN the Second Space profile itself and save it somewhere else afterward, but it needs to bring back everything as it was before with 1 click after we delete the Second Space, and create it again fresh and new.
I will start trying some things over the week-end and share back my findings, but if any of you already have some heads up or ideas, I'd gladly take them
Thanks all!
Regards,
Good morning dear, I have the same issue. Have you got a solution?

I am also dissapointed by the way Xiaomi designed it, I desperately need that feature, however I only have two workarounds which unfortunately don't meet your requirements:
1. Nandroid backup - with this you are guaranteed to have everything as it was both 1st space and 2nd space respectively.
2. MIUI cloud backup - somewhat reliable because it restores all previously installed apps PLUS miui settings, widgets, shortcuts, local settings.
What if I want backup only from 2nd space?
I just want to backup 2nd space, reset all data, and restore all files from 2nd space, and it will become like one space.
Yes you can choose to back up data from 2nd space only and be able to restore it, using Mi Cloud backup (create one for 2nd space if you don't have it already)
