Hi folks,
I wasn't going to release these until I'd finish the help file, but as they've already filtered out - I thought I may as well; and this thread will contain the latest release(s).
Firstly, as always when playing with ROMs be careful as you may end up killing your device - use these tools at your own risk!
These tools are Windows GUI based and allow you to:
• View and modify ROM file header information
• Decode Extended ROM files (e.g. ms_.nbf)
• Extract FAT16 image from ROM files
• Extract embedded splash screens
• Remove extraneous data surrounding FAT16 images
• Encode FAT16 images to ROM files
• Insert splash screens into new ROM files
But you'll find not all functionality is available for all devices.
I'll post the help file (with a user guide) when it's ready, but in the meantime feel free to have a play and help me test the apps
Bal
We at here very proud of you bal666!
great job.....keep it up!
I'm not doing a Windows GUI again ... had to learn MFC ... and yuck!
But thanks for the vote of confidence!!
By the way, if anyone knows what the ROM header fields called Unknown really are, I would very much like to know.
And yes, I've recently realised that the field I call "Device ID" is actually the memory location the ROM should be dumped to (well that's my current thinking anyway)...
Cheers
Bal
Your a star Bal66
Thanks
great app!
thank you bal!!

Hello bal666,
Thanks so much for this great program .. I tried it with my imate PDA2K and it encodes the files and decode it correctly .. The thing is , how I can modify the .fat file or edit it ?! ,, I found a program to unpack .fat files but not to pack it back again .. I hope you can tell us how we can manage the *.fat file m8
Thanks again m8 for this nice program and best wishes & regards
Great Tools
Great....great tools bal666!!!
hawk_mate
You can add or delete cab file and modified Ext ROM by your own using *.fat files, you can mount it using extra drive pro, and use lika other disk....
Is this a tool for exposing the Extended ROM on my magician? Sorry for the n00b question, but i dont get the start post.
Hawk_mate,
cornelius is right - use Extra Drive Creator Pro (you can download a demo version), or if you use linux then you can mount the file as a fat type.
If you use extra drive creator then turn off the recycle bin for the mounted drive - otherwise you'll have fun deleting files from it!!
I will finish the help file, and it contains all of this info...
Yzord,
nope, it won't expose the extended rom - it will allow you to modify the image file (ms_.nbf) that's used when flashing new roms to your device.
I think there may be a program around that will allow you edit the extended rom on your device (do a search, cause I don't really know!).
Have fun
Bal
Before Help file from Bal
Maybe before bal release the help file i'l post my experience while using his tool, ( I'm using for Magician and alpine ). I hope it will help newbie like me to learn more.Once again it newbie guide sorry if look basic but it's from newbie to newbie.
First, my own opinion say "THIS IS THE EASIEST WAY TO EDIT YOUR EXT ROM" thanks to bal!!! (even for newbie like me)
Maybe the tools you need is:
1. Bal's ROM editor (Ofcourse)
Tool to encode you EXT ROM ( Contains programs that installed
auto when we do hard reset.
2. Extra Drive pro
To mount ms_.fat file after we decode our EXT rom...
3. MaUpgradeUt_NoID
To update your ROM
For extra:
1. nb_image_converter_859_418
To create your own splash screen ( Only need 320x240, jpeg/bmp file)
2. comdlg32_901
Don't know what..but if you didn't run it,nb_image_converter_859_418
will fail to run
Now take a journey:
1. Just extract bal's ROM tool and you can run it....chose decode...
2. Browse your ext rom (ms_.nbf),press next
3. just leave option.... but if you want you can extrak the splash screen
(so you can keep the original, who knows you'll miss it)
4. Then run your Extra DrivePro...
5. Chose file to drive, browse your ms_.fat file, mount...
6. Turn of recycle bin on that drive!!!
7. Edit your Ext ROM...( add or delete app ) Don't for get edit txt file...
8. Cole it and dismount but dont delete container...
9. If you want to edit your splash screen go to step 14 first
10. Run bal's ROM tool again, chose encode
11. Browse your *.fat file, (and *.nb file if you want change splashscreen)
12. Run Encode, move your ms_.nbf to update file of ROM...
13. Ready to update using "MaUpgradeUt_NoID", first you'll get
"Country ID Error", DON'T WORRY JUST RUN IT ONCE again...
14. Get your image file, must 320x240 sized
15. Run "comdlg32_901" just one time only
16. Run "nb_image_converter_859_418" browse your pict
17. Save as nb....
18. Back to step 10
Hope those step by step will help newbie like me...
Yup even you newbie don't be affraid to try .if affraid, you'll never find something new....
My suggest just: Have a original ROM back up...so if you have a trouble just go to bootloader, and install the original ROM
Ok... have nice try...
Anyone tried this on the main rom yet, the nk_.nbf? I don't w
nt to sound dis-respectful, the tool is marvelous, but I'd like to hack the camera for instance with the updated one. I'm havin BS, so why cook my ext_rom as i'm not even using it. Just want to create a rom that can doesn't need any patches anymore. Know what I mean
Cheers, M
Excellent app  thanks
Cornelius,
nice instructions! Always worth having a quick guide - thanks.
oltp,
you can use the tool to decode the nk_.nbf file - but the result isn't a fat image. I'm sure I've seen tools on this forum somewhere which allow you to extract and insert files into this file ... have a look around - please do post your results as we'd all be interested to know how it goes.
Bal
Bal I will, only not sure when. It can take some time & takes some serious amount of courage to flash my own magician with a cooked os-rom.
Cheers, M
Absolutely - I'm a coward at heart!!
Many thanks for this collection of excellent tools. Already use a few of them for my own cooking

I tried it only with the extension ROM and that one worked. The OS-ROM doesn't work it seems. I tried that too and got the same error.
Sorry.

The Rom Koch at the moment does not support .nb files that have been created with tadzio's ImgFsTools as of now.
I've been wondering if we can perform the following steps to rebuild the .nb file using mamaich's old ImgFsTools.
If we can repack the dump into a rom that still has the 8Mb space in it, it should be possible for Rom Koch to open the file without problems. We can, after modifying that rom, repack it with the new ImgFsTools to shrink the files again.
I have been trying a couple of ways to do this, but run into some problems along the way. I've been digging in the forums to find out what I'm missing here, but can't seem to figure it out. I might be doing something totally obsolete here, but I've seem numerous posts of people trying to customize one of the precooked rom's with the Rom Koch, and didn't get anywhere.
First Try: Just unpack the .nb and repack.
Using the old ImgFsTools, I immediately get errors that there are invalid headers in the file doing the prepare command.
Second Try: First use NbSplit, then unpack and repack the payload.
This one neatly packs the payload again using the old toolkit, but after NbMerge on the files, the file is still small. So apparently it's not just the image file that has lost some size, because that is packed using the old tools, and should include the 8Mb free space. Seems like I'm mixing things up here, so have to try this another way.
Third Try: Same as above, but when repacking, use a different template.
I follow the steps that give me a smaller .nb file from the second try, but when repacking, I provide a both the old and new toolkit a template file of a fixed size rom. This packs the smaller rom data in a 67 Mb .nb file, so looks promising. Rom Koch still throws a DivideByZeroException though, so while I got (my test rom) the Black V2.0 rom in a 67Mb .nb file, that's not the problem.
Am I trying something remotely possible here, or should we just wait for an updated version of the Rom Koch to customize the precooked roms? Obviously, the new ImgFsTools do a lot more than just creating a smaller .bin file.
wait for koch v2.
It can be done and I've done it before using Jasjamming method.
Steps:
1. Prepare a good untouched version of any WM6 rom version ( No free space tweak by Tadzio's Toolchain) - Will be used as shell rom
2. Dump the WM Black 2.0 rom using Tadzio's toolchain only ---> Dump folder will be created: Do not delete
3. Use aWaiter and make imgfs_raw from the rom taken from no. 1 : Do not delete
4. Use normal imgfs tools to compile the dump directory using the imgfs_raw from no. 3 (Shell)
5. Make a new .nb file with the size of 67.7 MB.
actually guys... it's simple.
take an NB, split it into the dev data and the payload.
take the payload, and dump it... play with it, whatever, but remember to re-merge after you're done.

Sounds great, but I am waiting for Koch 2 that is even easier
Thanks guys, I guess I've been thinking too hard on this one.
Just wanted to try this to conveniently experiment with the precooked roms, but I guess convenient is when Rom Koch is upgraded...
I'll give the above suggestions a shot.
Hi all,
I am trying to port the mediaplus from AtomLife ROMs which has the second version of mediaplus with icons in circle.
I was successfull in extracting the imgfs.bin but there is onemore file ExROM.img which is not giving up.
I Tried
1. winimage
2. extended drive creator
3. scooter kitchen tools
but i am not able to look into the contents, it has the required _QHiddenPartition directory which has all the theme and image files for FMRadio/Mediaplus and Equaliser.
can anybody help me .
regards
Shreedhara
Mediaplus is very tricky..the images are in Ext ROM..but the links to executables are somewhere from the XIP section..any way keep working
Well
I don't think u understand my problem.
I was able to run the Mediaplus(v1.0) app on my Eten M700 earlier when I had WM5 on my eten.
But after I changed it to WM6, I want something new and hence I am trying to get the Atom Life Mediaplus (v2.0), which is better looking than the earlier one.
But SInce the latest ROM's from O2 have differenct format
It contains
lot of asm.mbss files (Motherboard assembly ) and FLASH.DIO and ExROM.img
with XLDR.nb and EBoot.nb0 files also.
But that Extended rom is hardnut to crack, it does not open at all for any tools we have here.
That'swhy I asked for help, so that I can extract it.

WELCOME TO ROMDonalds!!!!!!!!!
This kitchen is designed for those users, like me, who have been using their devices for a while and want to learn the methodologies behind hand cooking a ROM. By hand cooking I mean manually adding OEM software, adding CAB’s so they don’t have to be installed after flashing, hand editing registry hives and such like.
Don’t get me wrong GUI kitchens are excellent but, to fully understand the processes that go on behind cooking your own ROM,I feel that it should be done manually so you can see and hopefully understand what happens at each stage, so you could say that this is more of an educational kitchen.
.
.
How It Works
There are various stages to cooking a ROM, so when you run “ROMDonalds.exe” you will find a group of files, ordered by number, logically, you start at number 1, and follow the process through to completion.
After running “ROMDonalds.exe” you will find a new folder on your desktop called “ROM Donalds” this is your kitchen.
Inside each of these files are all the various pieces of software you will need to complete that particular stage of the process in addition to this there is an instruction manual that walks you through each step, with background information on what is happening not just the required steps.
.
.
The Kitchen Software
All of the software in this kitchen is available in other kitchens in various forms, some of the software has been slightly edited from original form but not by much, so I do not profess to having produced some revolutionary cooking software as it all currently exists.
The difference is that instead of having a folder full of tools with strange looking names, which would be intimidating and confusing to a new user, everything is sectioned out with instructions.
.
.
Thanks:
Special Thanks to Midget_1990 for helping with the software
Thanks to all those who originally designed the softwares used in this kitchen, namely:
Tadzio - for his tools
bepe - for his tools
the-equinoxe - Splash Screen Tools
dutty - NBH Tool
also thanks to anyone I forgot (sorry about that!)

i would really appreciate it if you could cook and follow my instructions just to see in there are any obvious mistakes (Other than spelling & grammar!!)
Thanks alot
Great work man... will give it a spin later. Thanks

This is great, easy to digest information, great work piecing all this together and writing the pdf.
One thing I must say is I very much do enjoy the use of the visual package selection method, manualley cooking in the cabs is great but being able to check a box next to what I want is always a plus.

I like GUI cooking too, please dnt think i am belitteling other Kitchen designers!
MY problem's with the GUI cooking method are:
1) YOU DONT LEARN ANYTHING - THE MOST IMPORTANT PART - THE IDEA OF THIS KITCHEN IS TO TEACH PEOPLE WHAT GOES ON WHEN COOKING
2) its lazy, as the install screen of ROMDonalds says "Getting Something Is Good, Doing It Yourself Is Better!!!" (im not saying its not a great idea that people can customise their own ROMs that fast, and have whatever they want included)
3) its hard to modify an already cooked rom (i.e. Black Satin on Pandora)
4) its not guaranteed to work, stupid errors thrown up with no option to fix
5) if you cant change the base ROM you are stuck with it, also what you think is a good base, someone else may say sucks and visa versa
6) there is way more OEM software about than CAB's so if you manually cook, you are not restricted by what is included int he kitchen
I created a kitchen like this so i could learn in the way I WANTED to learn, not with some of the hap-hazard instructions there are available.
I found that through using the instructions i have published i have learned alot about the stages of cooking, so now, when i look at other kitchens, and it tells me to "Dump Rom" or "extract XIP" etc, i know wats going on!!
(also when errors in the GUI kitchens come up, i have a MUCH better understanding of where and why the error has occured!!)
I hope people find it as usefull as i have!
I love this kitchen I have allready learned TONS from it, I am just saying it would be nice to be able to use this kitchen AND be able to use a GUI for adding more packages as well.
But I completly understand your thinking and I definently have allready learned alot!!!
And again I appreciate your taking the time to put this together with a great PDF walkthru.
I am also wondering if there is anyway to delete something from the windows dir after it has been copied elsewhere ? or if you can move files instead of copying them. I am looking to cooking in Opera and it requires a few files in a few diffrent dirs and I would hate to have copies of these files in the windows dir and the dirs they are suppost to be in.

you mean to create 1 folder called "Opera" and have all of the dir's and files for Opera inside that folder so you can drop it into the windows dir on a dumped ROM?
this can be done altho im not sure how, i want to include this into my instructions but as i said im not sure on how to go about it, JJ did it with some of the black ROMs, Satin definately.
only thing i can suggest is to dump SATIN and see how JJ did it!!
If you find anything please post it here so i can include it, and ill do the same.
Unable to find default.hv & user.hv in dump folder and a couple other questions
Hello Bennec83,
Thanks for the informative kitchen tools!! I am hoping to create a custom made ROM from these tools.
Question:
I have dumped the recently released Dopod ROM without difficulty and am now at the stage (stage C before C.1) of finding the two files in the dump folder: default.hv and user.hv ...I performed a search and then manually looked for the files without success. I have followed the format for dumping and I may be missing something but these files are not appearing...Any suggestions??
Also, if I wanted to delete say windows auto update or other folders in this ROM without creating a conflict, this dumping section would be the appropriate area, correct?? I guess this is the part where trial and error occurs...correct? I am trying to maximize storage space without conflicts.
Thanks so much for your time,

GREAT work m8! Just read your cooking instructions and they are superb. I haven't tried the kitchen yet, but from what I read it is pretty straight forward and very well explained !
Thanks for creating this, I will test in the following days and let you know of my experience
Again, great work and keep us posted of any changes...
Twist in regards to cooking in opera - there is no way to delete the files after they are copied out of the rom. I know it seems wasteful but that is the way it is. Most cooks hence keep the inclusion of this type of app down to a minimum because of storage space. Would recommend compression of opera.exe to use less storage memory - and find the oem package so you can use the rgu and initflashfiles.txt from there to make life easier.

HI,
default.hv and user.hv are a pain in the arse to find, you need to change the folder options so you can "show hidden files and folders" AND uncheck "hide protected operating system files" (see screenshot)
then the next thing i do is order everything by type, then scroll down to "HV File" and you will find them both
with regards to your second question, this is about dumping and cooking a ROM.
a ROM is originally compiled from an operating system, to change features inside the OS you need to dump the ROM differently as this kitchen (at the moment) is only for adding and removing APPs and tweaks.
To do what you want you need to get the "SYS" "OEM" and "XIP" folders from your ROM, swap them into a different kitchen (one that allows you to run something called "BuildOS.exe" )
I will be releasing one here, but the first thing to do before you start messing with the OS of your phone, is to get used to doing the methods in this kitchen.
It is my Birthday today, so i cannot put together a "BuildOS" package and instructions today but I will, soon!!
hope this helps
Just start kit. For further cooking.
Based at official release (and stable, I hope,- don't like to be beta-tester for HTC "in the dark").
It's new way for me (just began to use WinMob by Diamond), so don't bite me too much
Don't forget about Hard-SPL!
Few cosmetic changes & a little tweaked. UC ready.
In OEM left TouchFlo only.
In SYS out: OneNote, PowerPoint, WindowsLive, Help & other rubbish.
In "Install" folder - example only. You can change it to your own provider (look to OEM\CONNECTIONSETUPDB - password I found at XDA) or just use ConnectionSetup.
The most tweaks - in OEM\xxxconfig
Be careful to finish.xml - it's important file!
(return to "Internal Storage". Manila start including in this file too. You can customise it up to you. Same as *.rgu in this folder)
To find the bugs&errors better together, I think
Ideas&remarks - welcome!
It's OPEN PROJECT.

Would like to try it, but dont want to fool around with the Kichen stuff

Not see the reason - only base functions.
You are right, but it's the fastest ROM I've ever tried
But like you said, it's very basic. Camera is not working, so you need to add all these yourself.
Now watching the kitchen files.. .."WinRAR gives the following message: Invalid or corrupt authenticity information"
It does seem to extract just normal. Is the RAR file save?
update: You might even remove the Office part from the light ROM??

You are right, but it's the fastest ROM I've ever tried
Now watching the kitchen files.. .."WinRAR gives the following message: Invalid or corrupt authenticity information"
It does seem to extract just normal. Is the RAR file save?

Its 7-Zip i think extracts ok
I will give this a try, other kitchens didn't work out for me very well.
Thanks man ...
Help system
I think idea to remove the help system absolutely is not the best.
Sometimes apps need it for normal work. May keep help engine alive?
Any opinions?
Please tell me one usefull hint that's provided to you because of the Help function?
For me it's wasted space on every device I've owned. If I encounter any problem they go beyond the help files
Looks pretty complicated with no real guide, will look into other kitchens!
I talk about engine (hwhelp) only. The most help files - "dead cargo", of course.
After try to push "help" button at some apps - error, could make system unstable.
P.S. made two "light" packages. ( see in the first post).
It use a little less memory, I hope.
Congratulations for this new project! If you need any help about a multilanguage (Italian) version... I'm ready!

I think, change the locale - it's only change the *.mui & may be other files in folders *_0409. Change to Italian locale - _0***, don't know exactly.
Could you try it?
Found the mistake - "alien" rom container (from 20273) in the kitchen.
Just accident.
May be it's nothing, but...
- in the first post + hwhelp.exe: changes_to_kitchen.rar
Tricks
Stop unused services (functional don't loose) - will start on demand:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Services\BTAGSVC]
"Flags"=dword:00000004
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Services\BthAsPlugin]
"Flags"=dword:00000004

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Services\QuickGPS]
"Flags"=dword:00000004
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Services\WirelessService]
"Flags"=dword:00000004
It's THE SAMPLE. (but I use it)
May stop any more? Biotouch, for example?

Start HTCVolumeControl.dll without taskmanager, or if you use another TM:
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\HTC\BootLauncher\Services\HTCVOLUME]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Services\HTCVOLUME]
"Dll"="HTCVolumeControl.dll"
"Order"=dword:0000000c
"Index"=dword:00000000
"Info"=dword:00000000
"Prefix"="VOL"
Tested on Raphael VolumeControl

Somebody can explain how to (EXACTLY! step by step) change OS, XIP, SYS in this kitchen? I've read a lot of tutorial but I didn't understand how...
In example, I've got:
1) this kitchen and this "base" rom
2) another diamond rom with 20748 xip build.
If I would to update OS, XIP and SYS to newer, what I have to do?!

You don't neet "base" rom (or what you mean?) it's example only.
If you talk about rom\os.nb in the kitchen - it's just container for rom, which is empty.

Just delete oem, rom, sys & make you own "tree"
Thanks for your very QUICK reply Modilv!
So, I have just to take the parts of (maybe more) diamond romS that I need (including OS.nb??) and put theme in your kitchen..?
So simple?!
PS: no "porting" xip or something like that?
TIA
It't not "my" kitchen (just add bepe's utility to final step)
I made the "tree" only.
You can do the same.
Hi guys,
I decided to open a blog which explains how to cook roms for the i780. There are very few chefs, and cooking is a really hard science to learn without help! So, I decided that I take the time and write posts so that everyone could learn the process in a methodical manner and cook roms in the future!
I'd slowly write posts explaining each step of the process in detail, so that we can have more people learning how to cook and make the i780 community more happening
Head over to this URL to check out the first few posts -

Update:
Attached core kitchen tools that you'll need to use! Enjoy!
cheers
San
I never was a fan of this forum, not sure why, maybe because I use a ASUS P527 and there are not proper instructions on how to create a custom ROM, I appreciate your taking the initiative
I think its good fun to try and figure out things on your own
Non-HTC devices do have a very small fan base unfortunately....and ironically, HTC makes the crappiest devices imo (highly crash prone, buggy, lousy drivers, useless qualcomm processor)!
You can apply the same tools and techniques even to cook asus roms....its not all that different
cheers
wooooooow thanks a lot buddy finally we have it also !!!

To remove a package, you can get rid of the corresponding folders in your SYS folder. But its not recommended that you knock off office/ie as they might be referenced within other apps. You can always take it off, build a rom and see if everything works fine
For example, to remove IE, just delete your Browsing, Browsing_DPI_xx and Browsing_Lang_XXXX, BROWSINGCORE, browsingie, browsingie_LANG_XXXX folders. That should get rid of IE for you! Then you need to recreate your bin!

thanks a lot for kitchen tools and ur explanations! i read ur blog all the time great work!!

1. when i open dumo folder it shows

are these important dsm files?
2. when i press build packages it gives this error:
not found: select .os file to extract XIP
and i extract xip file using osbntool as xip.bin
any solutions for both of these?

When you start, it asks if you would like to run build xip.bat.....just hit NO for that....
trojan reported in the attachment
Win32/TrojanDownloader.Zlob.NBP
false alarm?
well last night i finished my own wm6.1 build 20270 128dpi pdxib1 according to your guide i wanna tell what i did to complete it ;
1.i exctracted my rom using i780 kitchen and i got dump folder and i also added some extra tools like ervius buildos, osnbtool etc...then i used pkgbuildos to seperate folders into oem and sys
2. i used oem part from krizky82's kitchen and i add some extra packages using ervius package creator 2.7 and add them with oem_blahblah to oem folder.
3. i deleted windows live and msn messenger from sys folder and copied netcf 3.5 and flashlite v3.1 from krizky82 kitchen. i also used his initflash and rgu file coz i had same structure almost(oem totally same and sys programs also)
4.i looked at both efn's kitchen and krizky82 kitchen and i saw that they have this structure oem,sys and rom and in rom there is xip folder. when i looked at inside xip folder i saw that there is only coredll.dll folder and others are dsm rgu and boot files so my next step
5. i used osbn tool to exract xip.bin and after i got that xipkitchen_beta6 and i choosed the same donor and original and after extracting i got original xip files and i ordered in same structure like efn's kitchen
6.then i used pgkbuildos and let the process starti had some dsm duplicate errors and i delete duplicated ones and later i didnt start xip extract bat and flashable bin bat so after process again i had temp/dump folder
7. during buildos there wasnt any error and i was happy about it
8. using inputTXTFileMaker ( thanks to u dreamtheather93) i got input text and after that using these commands;
mgfsfromdump imgfs_raw_data.bin new_imgfs.bin
del imgfs_raw_data.bin
ren new_imgfs.bin imgfs_raw_data.bin
make_imgfs i780.nb0.payload.body -nosplit
merge i780.nb0.payload.header i780.nb0.payload.body i780.nb0.payload
nbmerge -data 2048 -extra 8 i780.nb0 -conservative
and conv3 input.txt > conv3_output.txt
ren i780.nb0.b000ff !!i780_flashable_bin.bin
i got my flashable bin file yupiiiii i controlled the size of flashable bin and it is 86.2 mb and the size of dump folder almost 125 mb i hope it is ok
now i will flash my phone but is there any possibility that my phone can be bricked ?
thanks a lot for ur guide again!!!
note: i already used i780.bin as 12mb page pool size i did it before kitchen using osbn tool
good job m8
You cant really brick your i780 because of this I've done way crazier stuff....like trying out omnia's xip, drivers of omnia on i780....and nothing's given way
However, i'm hoping you've ported your XIP accurately, and i'm unsure how've you've built your SYS folder.
but, go ahead and flash and see if it boots nothing to be paranoid if it doesnt boot/hangs at startup/throws an error and fails etc. etc. If any of this happens, then we could troubleshoot it together
cheers & good luck
Great job!
Nice start San!
Not even some days left from your first successful cooking and you already best gid on it!
Keep on do it. And we wait for new mods for our best touchphone!
I think now anyone is able to break Eagles wings =P
