The Clock - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

After my ROM being upgraded now I can not keep the "Standard Time" (GMT-6 Central US). It is going to Military Time. What is the fit?

and you changed the regional settings to where you live ?

The clock...
I only wish that was the fit. I have tried that several time. I have compared it to my other PDA....

For users in japan (and others...)

I bought my TP2 from the web (I was usuing previously an Hermes (X01HT)
Been using it for 3 weeks. It works perfectly. Calls quality is excellent, data transmission fast, no particular issue with Softbank network, I am pretty happy about it
What I dont like, and nothig to do with Japan (Dont get me wrong, I am a big HTC fan and I love my phone):
1. Poor built quality. The phone looks great.. out of the box. After 2 weeks in my pocket the Chrome finish starts to crack and let appear some black paint. I am treating my phone well, really not trying to break it, this is under normal use. Honestly very very far from an iPhone built quality (Again I am not an apple fanboy). It's not a "big" problem but for a phone that costs that much it's not really acceptable (I have an Hermes who took way longer to crack...)
Other issue is the Tilt mecchanism a bit soft and sometimes not deploying the screen exactly inline with the keyboard (Some other posts detail this better than me)
2. TF3D is nice... rather fast... BUT too many important menues are lacking compared to WM6.1 menus (for instance it took em a while to find out that what was preventing me from allowing to synchronize some of my activesync folders was the lack of option in TF3D. Similarly the handling of contacts screen misses too many options). Maybe there is a way to have all WM6.1 menus appear under TF3D, in which case I am a taker if you have some trick (registry trick maybe ?)
3. Some GPS issues, but I hope I'll be able to fix this (Or maybe just my model has an issue)
4. Some slowness in the handling of contacts / SMS (granted I have many so it may come from that but my Hermes (with a modified ROM) was way faster)
All in all very happy with the phone, beautiful screen, excellent touch feeling, lots of great functions... Just the external built quality will probably attract the jokes from my friends with iPhones
Alcibiade, thank you SO much for starting this thread! I'm in the same boat I guess you were 2 months ago. I'm an x01ht user (actually, i remember seeing your name in the forums). but i think my x01ht's better days are behind it and i'm very ready to move on to my next pda phone. i'm staying with softbank, but refuse to buy anymore of their handicapped phones. so i'm considering buying the Touch Pro 2 (online).
i'm a bit confused though as to if there is a particular model I need to get. the whole GSM versus CDMA thing really confuses me. can you let me know where you bought your touch pro 2 from and which network band. i assume CDMA since japan is WCDMA, right?
again, thanks for any help/info you can give.

I was not sure either and asked the shop (Expansys in HK)
I bught the European model an it works perfectly: 3G is the same in Europe and in Japan (Whereas US carriers use different frequencies). So it will (and does) work perfectly. 2G wont, but it didnt either on your X01HT
If you buy it you wont regret it, I really love mine (But the Hermes was an excellent phone... Just needed a bigger screen...)
thanks for the informative reply. i'm leaning heavily towards ordering mine within the next 24 hours. $700 is a lot of money. out of curiosity, how much did japanese customs duty charge you for the import of the phone?
Alcibiade, still waiting on you to come back online friend! Guess I need to bump this thread up! I'm looking for some of your expertise and experiences using this phone in Japan. I'm curious as to which ROM you had installed in yours (any chance you can put it in your sig?).
i have another thread going where i'm trying to get other people's experiences with japanese input ability. for some reason, i just can't get Japanese input on my phone. I can see kanji and kana fine in texts, webpages, emails, etc. but i can't enter any myself. when you installed the raphael/diamond Japanese IME, and Softbank MMS on your phone, were you able to write Japanese?

Overall experiences of desire users

Just wanted to start this thread, for users to share there overall experiences of the desire. The good the bad and the ugly etc...
Enjoy
Well so far so good.
I've had it since Friday (Tuesday now) and tbh it makes the HD2 looks pathetic. Don't get me wrong the HD2 is agood phone, but compared to the competition its looking long in the tooth.
Battery lie seems poor but i can't put it down lol, so probably fine.
My only gripe is the lack of SD support (I know 2.2)
I hope Froyo arrives on the 23rd, if not i'll be kicking myself not getting a Nexus One.
I feel the touchpad could be used to great effect, but not utilised. Mouse cursor in browser?
More access to the internal memory would be good too.
agreed about apps2sd, it's the only niggle i have with the phone. there's more apps that i want and can use than the phone can handle.
here's hoping 2.2 is sooner rather than later

Why would you need an actual mouse cursor? You can already use the trackpad to select links.

saves you scrolling through hundreds in a page. you could just move the cursor over the link and click in.
sometimes i can read a page, but my finger is too thick to select the link, however if i had a cursor i could.
Also would mean strategy games like starcraft could be played with ease.

Just buy a capacitive stylus.
For me the main disadvantage of the Phone (and actually Android in general) in comparison with Winmo is that it does not want to sync with the corporate callendar and contacts via bluetooth natively.
I know I can install htc sync and sync via usb, but it requires me to carry on the usb cable everywhere I go...
I know I can install "Missing Sync" for windows but it cost ~40$ and it's a bit too expensive for an application.
Second - APP2SD of course
Third - battery life (I know - screen)
best regards

My initial impressions were positive, to the point of canceling my Iphone purchase and going for the Desire instead.
However, that swiflty changed. After much time spend arguing with my network provider, the independent seller and finally HTC support I am left dumbfounded by their logic and inane software restrictions.
To explain, all the phones in the UK, or at least the majority of them are region locked for some reason. The phones provided by the networks themselves are region-locked to the UK only, meaning not being able to type in any other language and if one goes abroad runs the risk of not having correct time, date, weather, radio and so on as the phone's 'locale' settings do not adjust. What is more frustrating, the demo phones available in the same networks' stores or independent dealers work normaly (having locale and languages for all european languages and some asian) but even when buying an unbranded one it is still region locked (although with a couple more choices...).
To promote such a phone as a flagship product and not being able to type in another language, a function my 6-year old backup phone handles with ease, is beyond words.
Generally speaking, a great phone, however, having said that let me say this: I find that I lose coverage very easily whereas I didn't with other phones I have had e.g. Blackberry Bold. I can find that if I leave my phone on the bedside table overnight, it loses coverage for some unknown reason. This is a real downer for me as I rely on having coverage very much.

Hi! I really think thats odd! I've bought mine unlocked in Portugal and it didn't have the Portuguese language but had English and French. When i first put my Portuguese sim card, i didn't select any of the languages (there wasn't Portuguese) but the phone is on Portuguese since i'm using a Portuguese sim card.
Nevertheless, in such powerfull phone and OS, there is (almost) a way to bend such limitations.
For instance, using morelocale app (on market) and i just love the HTC_IME_MOD (you can find it here).
Try these and then post your review

I don't have such problem. Maybe it means a faulty device?
Thank you Necroman_AI for your tips. The morelocale application I hope that it will make the phone at least work fully when I am in a country outside the 3 it seems to natively recognise.
I am a new user of android devices so I am not yet familiar with the mods but I will try them. However, this is stlll very unprofessional from a company that aspires to compete in the high-end area of smartphones.

Hi again! I don't really know is this is HTC fault, you haven't said if you bought it unlocked or in a network. Networks sometimes limits certain abilities of the phones. But morelocale will solve your problem and search for HTC_ime_mod here on xda and you will get what is the best Android keyboard for me! It's just an app and you can install it like any other app. It's really good and so much better than the regular HTC_ime that canes with the phone...

[Q] Blackstone Navigation

Up-to-Speed: I recently obtained a T8282 thinking it was a T8285, I live in the USA and expected to use this on the AT&T Network. I do not have or wish to have a Data Plan, so this might be a blessing.
Now the issue, I want Navigation. I am replacing a Touch Cruise which I was using TomTom 6 on, I was quite pleased with it. Now I have attempted to load it on the HD only to find what many others here have - no luck. There were success stories but I am not one of them - just in case others are reading, my version of TomTom 6 was 6.01. I see that the Touch HD is compatible with TomTom 7, but TomTom lists no usa maps on their site for the States. In contradiction to that there are reports of people using TomTom 7 USA Maps out there. While I prefer staying with TomTom (6 or 7) I would need more information pertaining to the Touch HD. I would also prefer not to have to start and/or stop other programs to get it running (ie changing resolution, which I see here and there). In addition to TomTom 7 being compatible Copilot Live V8 is also a contender. Copilot is less money and has Maps available, but reviews have the maps lacking - but those reviews are dated.
How have others dealt with "Non-Data Plan" Navigation out there? Like I said keeping it simple. Short Lags I can deal with, and not viewing Panoramic Shots, are some of the issues I read about, I can live with that. Not having POIs is less desirable and even less, not reflecting driving on the right road (all of what I have read in these forums. It would seem that if I lived in Europe I'd be better off, but here I am in the ole' USA. Any help/advice would be appreciated - and yes, I have searched for this data but most of it is old, and some is contradictive.
I use iGo 8, very good navigation software imo.
I have seen IGO8 out there, along with Ndrive, Navigon Mobile Navigator 7, Copilot Live V8, TomTom 7, and Garmin Mobile XT all outhere repotedly working on the Blackstone (maybe a few others too). While all of these have been reported to work on the Blackstone, all have negative sides as well (Maps, Lags, inoperative features, etc..). In my case, living in the USA, seems to weed a few of those out (Europe seems to be the center of the Navigation world). I actually attempted to purchase the Copilot product, the download price was hard to resist - but my ISP (Comcast) kept disconnecting before the complete file could be downloaded (it is a huge file), they were quite prompt in refunding the money (a HUGE plus for them!). I will probably go back and buy the Disc if nothing pans out here changing my mind.
What I need is actual feed-back from fellow North Americans (preferably USA) on these (or other) products being used.
Thanks for the feed back. I see that you are in Belgium though, you feed back is good for the product as far as features (a plus for IGO8), but I also need Map feed back.
Up to now I've testet TomTom, IGo, Ndrive, Navigon, Sygic McGuider and Route 66.
In my opinion the most promising software was Ndrive. It is fast, graphics are fluent, there'S just a little map lag and it's cheap
Thaks for the heads up!
Any USA/Canade users of NDrive out there that can vallidate the Map Quality?
Oh, by the way - I see you are from Germany. I just picked my mother-in-law up from the Airport, she was in Munich with family. She came over in the 60's after marrying an US Airforce member, after having experienced the War. Her father was actually in Hitler's SS. Pretty cool.

GPS Voice Navigation

You should check this new app released yesterday. Uses Bing maps, Google maps and MapQuest.
metric supported?

From the pics I'd say yes (check Settings -> Map).
So what is MS's equivalent to Google Navigation?

Thanks for the tip Peew971.
I tried it, unfortunately it does not work in France. Not at all.
Whatever the provider it says "Unable to find the route".
On the contrary Turn-By-Turn Navigation by GPS Tuner works great. Fantastic
But I would be glad if GPS Navigation worked because it uses Google Maps, whereas Turn-By-Turn Navigation uses exclusively the terrible Bing Map.
6 pounds it's qouite expensive.
I tried at least 3 navigations in Poland and none of them was working.
I emailed navigon about having ther ofline system on wp7. I used it when I had the iPhone. Loved it as I do a bit of travelong with work and it kept everything together in one place. Got a rely saying they are testing a version. Will post the email tomorrow when i am at the pc.

I tested both T-B-T and GPS Voice today. Unfortunately, neither of them are really close to perfect.
Some of the UI elements of GPS Voice are much nicer (such as the larger, clearer turn icons, and the way it retains the previous route on the map as a ghosted image if it needs to reroute), but it did a very poor job of actually routing me, opting for slow residential streets instead of faster, wider roads, even when neither option represented a longer or shorter distance. Also, it seemed to get VERY confused at at least one intersection. I was stopped, waiting to make a turn, and it kept alternating between "turn right now" and "go straight for 1 miles" for the entire time I was waiting (about 2 minutes). It was very annoying. And I am not sure why, but it did not display or speak any partial mile instructions. Everything below 1 mile was directed in feet, such as "turn right in two thousand, six hundred and forty feet", instead of what I would expect, which would be more like "turn right in one half mile".
I'm sure it will improve over time, but right now GPS Voice is not a real choice for me.
T-B-T, while its UI isn't as flashy, did a better job of navigating, although it did miss some obvious chances to find shorter routes than the one it chose. And I'm not sure (I need to do some more tests), but it seemed to eat up my battery like candy. Part of that may be due to me leaving the screen on more than I needed to, but it may also be polling the GPS more than it needs to. On the other hand, it worked flawlessly under the lock screen (unlike GPS Voice), and the timing of its turns was always spot on.
I might purchase T-B-T, if for no other reason than to encourage future development and enhancement.
Neither of these apps can hold a candle to AT&T Navigator right now (POI destinations, 3D view, spoken street names, flawless route planning in the 3 years that I've used it, etc), but then I suppose that is to be expected, considering its $10/month cost. Whether they will catch up only time will tell.
installed it today, crashed my mozart terribly. it turned itself off and i couldn't turn it back on, not until removing the battery
re: Turn By Turn
I've purchased it and have been testing it each drive... Works well and have jumped onto their support page and requested the ability to rename favourites (5 George St to Mum's Place) and they replied within a day to tell me this feature is in their wishlist and will be implemented in an update...
/me = suitably impressed
I gather the lack of a reply means there's simply is no Google Nav equivalent for WP7? *walks to VZW store to exchange this heap for an Android device*
Bing Navigation is coming this Fall with Mango.

Automotive style GPS apps are not built to save batteries. They assume you are plugged into your car's DC power outlet.
I have been using Turn By Turn, and so far like it. May buy it, but seems silly when Bing Navigation will appear in 4ish months.

OK, first, I'm not an idiot. I know how GPS navigation apps are designed to work. On a long trip, using a car charger would be an obvious necessity. But it should NOT be a necessity for a cross-town round trip.
And second, my comment was based on comparing the behavior of T-B-T to AT&T Navigator on the same phone. I have used Navigator for trips lasting well over an hour, without using the car charger, with no unusual battery drain. T-B-T, on the other hand, appeared to eat between 10-15% in a 15 minute trip. Again, I need to confirm this, and it may be that some of the drain came from having the display on for the first half of the trip, but it still seemed excessive, even for a GPS app.

I felt the same way, about waiting for Bing maps with navigation, but I think spending $5 for months of turn by turn navigation is a pretty good deal. If Bing navigation is better I won't feel like I wasted money, but if Turn by Turn is continually improved I may just keep using it instead.

[Q] Is Touchwiz really dead now?

I was reading up on how Samsung has lost in the court room and what damages they have to pay (over a billion sheesh) and I saw a few comments that said Touchwiz is officially dead now. Is this true? Or will they have to redo it and re release it? Also can someone tell me what devices are now banned? (Captivate, Galaxy Tab, ?).
Nothing is banned or decided yet, they did say they stole some features, and need to pay 1bill...but Apple lost in Korea on the Sammy suit so you can bet it will be appealed and this will string out for ages either way. So nothing will be changed or banned for a while, so enjoy and dont sweat it
Apple sux
Samsung will just remove some animations if forced.
Bounce effect, my ass.
idk if any of it really applies to the new touchwiz (nature ux).
- no more bounceback feature
- no more colourful bordered icons
- different phone icon (there's a grid in the background now)
- the bottom dock has 5 icons opposed to apple's 4
- the bottom dock now goes away when in the app drawer, while apple's patent states it should be there always.
