anyone use the O2 Plus utility on non-O2 phones? - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 General

Hi!
Two months after getting my first converged device, I still feel like I know nothing...
I came across the O2 Plus utility's manual on the O2 site....seems like it should be bundled by HTC with all their products......I was wondering and pardon me if this has been covered, whether anyone has been able to successfully use this utility on the BA ( imate PDA2K/Qyek 9090) ?
Is it only for O2 registered users or can we use it too? if so, where can I download it from?
Thanks in advance!
Regards,
Kaz.

If this mentions the installation of the O2 active interface by any chance, stay well away from it - most of us that have it install in corporate mode to disable it - its useless and causes all sorts of problems on the device - Mike

Seems like some people here are using it:

Noobie - simple questions, i hope.

All,
Ive been following several forums for the past couple of weeks, and this is defineitley the most helpful and informative on the XDA2S.
That siad, Im a noobie, so it doesnt all sink in straight away.
im on an 02 contract (locked -another story trying to get unlocked and one on which I'll keep you posted). Im seeing several posts which indiacte a rom upgrade would be useful to dispose of all the 02 customisation and improve performance - is there any truth in this, and if so, which ROM is the latest stable version, and where can I obtain it.
Secondly, I'd like to set up several email accounts, so I can synch with several PC's, including my corporate pc - is there a simple way to do this with profiles - the XDA user manual is thick, but very basic.
Finally, does anybody have a sim replicator for the XDA2S, and can they comment on its usefuleness. Im on 02 for personal calls, and Vodafone for corporate (and heavy email/internet usage), and woudl therefor benefit from the capability to change providers without ripping the battery out each time.
Many thanks in advance for your help and advice.

Good Money To Anyone Who Can Sort Me Out
Hi I also have an XDAIIs with a PAY As You Go SIM, My Corporate network is Orange. I have been trying to get it unlock but no avail. Is someone working on an Unlock Tool? If so if someone could let me know that would be great.
I in the meantime I have been trying to connect to my Nokia6310 (Corporate Phone) via bluetooth to Browse the web and sync E-mail over orange GPRS. But unlike my HP4100 I don't get a connect to phone over bluetooth option. Within Bluetooth Manager. Are there some missing files? I am assuming o2 don't add it to the OS so that you don't browse using another network. Any help you be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Paul
I can confirm its an O2 XDA 2S, aka blue angel. Ive tried calling O2 several times, explaining I want to use both networks, but they wont be budged.
Its now my personal mission to get the handset unlocked - and to distribute as wide and far as possible once completed.

O2 RELEASE ROM UPGRADE FOR XDA2S

I have been sent a link from O2 Data Support for downloading the new XDA2s ROM upgrade, which apparently will fix the Bluetooth problems.
The link is...
http://www.sourceo2.com/O2_Developers/Devices/O2_Xda_II/XdaIIs_launchROM.htm
Haven't done anything with it yet, but thought you guys might like to know...

Guy
Hmm I wonder if I can use this update on my O2 Xda2s.
I got it in Malasyia.
Noel
I installed it on my UK XDA 2s, I will report back later.
In the PDF it's saying that this version is only for devices sold by O² UK or O² Ireland... Not sure if I should give it a go on my version..
Noel
I think I might wait and see what others say about this before I install it myself. So many that have it already say it is great but then you hear others say it has caused problems.
That post is the launch rom, not an upgrade. LMAO It is intended for people who attempt to flash the XDA IIs with a different vendors rom and screw it up.
Mike
Nope, its not, click the link. O2 are obviously just too lazy to create a new page for a new rom!
Nigel
HAHA you are correct!!! LMAO oh well.
Hi..have installed the update..and have encountered several problems...was wondering if anyone could help me.
I hate the fact that the clock has disappeared from the top right so whe u are using applications its no longer visible. Is there any way of bring it back?
Also now when you click the o2 at the top it dosn't give the active connections anymore. Therefore whats the quickest way to disconnect the gprs? and is there any way of bringing that back to how it used to be?
I have also had to reset my phone more often that I had to before.
Was wondering if anyone had encountered the same problems and how to resolve them.
Thanks so much...
Bit the bullet and upgraded last night, wifi still works and as I use Corporate mode I don't get any issues with 02 active, icons or clocks. All seems normal, so far!
Have to agree with Dave. I finally bit the bullet and installed the update last night. Don't like the new O2 active and put the clock straight back with the registry key.
Other than the missing clock and poor O2 Active software which I never use anyway no real problems. Tom Tom still works fine with my Bluetooth GPS receiver. WIFI still works fine with WPA security and everything locked down on the access point.
Still receive SMS notification and its nice that you're not limited to 70 char when using ' in sms text messages now!
All ok.
har5ha:
Just get the old O2 active back. To to this, head to the xda-dev FTP site, find the old O2 XDA IIs extended rom, pull it, find the file install.ARM.CAB (O2 active)
Sync/backup yr stuff then hard reset the XDA IIs, and let it do its stuff. When leave it to install the extended rom, but be ready to soft reset it when you get asked the 'corporate/personal' question (you'll have to watch the screen since there is a timeout). Once it reboots, copy install.ARM.CAB to the machine, and execute it. It will soft reset yr device at the end.
I use 2 things from O2 active, the battery plugin and the O2 icon to kill connections. Shame billy did not think to include a disconnect dialogue as well really (he put on in for vpn).
There might be a way to install old over new, dunno. I tried and it locks loads of files (even if you prevent it from loading).
Nigel
thanks Nigel...I ended up installing gb soft for the disconnect button.
So its ok...still getting loads of crashing. I think am going to reinstall it and then use corporate mode..hopefully it will crash less!
can I get an update on xda iis rom update
Hi all, I'm still new to this whole thing but reading and researching all I can. Don't have an xda iis as of yet, but on the high streets waiting list. I like the phone and in one way, can't wait, but don't want problems when I get it, especially at the price. Can anyone on o2 that has purchased their phone from o2 let me know how you are getting on...problems...ect, before and after the update.? To be honest, I'm a bit afraid to bite the bullet and get one right now due to what I'm hearing...especially since I'm not very computer smart. I do understand that it depends a lot on the manufacturer of the phone but if I had problems like I'm hearing about it would really do my head in...(no patience). Thanks
Well I love my phone to bits...had issues with the update but now that I have hard reset it and put it corporate mode its not freezing anymore.
But you have to remember its a pocket pc...like a pc..will need to be reset every so often...I was resetting mine of average once a day. It just takes a minute.
There are some negative points..but the positive outweighs the negative I think. My old pda was palm os (clie) and this is windows which is really good! As well as the fact that it has a phone built in too!
Hi all.
Can you please post some more feedback on this rom.
How is the BT stability?
Range?
Crackling noise?
License Expired troubbles?
I know its Build 3500, but maybe something else in this rom makes a difference.
How about the problem with sound dissapering when you answer a call.
Any troubbles here? This is really a pain in the (_!_)
Running the New Rom for a couple of days now and it seems much better than the launch Rom, The O2 active stuff is just as pants as usual so remove that and the "Connections" exe from Windows\startup.
Best thing is that it's stopped the annoying bug of the GPRS settings being screwed up when you enable/disable Wi-Fi.
Recommend it myself

Upgrading O2 XDA Exec to JasJar WWE

I have recently purchased a new O2 XDA Exec.
I would like to load up the JasJar firmware onto my XDA so that I wouldn't have any O2 software on it. As I am new to all this, would it be possible to help me work out how to do this step by step.
Thank you very much for all your help.
Tom
Why do you want to do this, the Jasjar rom is as buggy as hell.
True. I agree. I had an MDA Pro, rigged it with a Jasjar rom, and I now have an Exec, and I would be inclined to say that even the MDA Pro rom is more stable than the Jasjar one.
Well the thing is I don't really want any specific phone software on my phone, I just want windows mobile 5, but still being able to phone people and view webpages on my 3g connection. I thought that is what the jasjar rom is, is there a way of just having windows moible 5 and non of the o2 stuff at all, that inculdes the o2 icon at the top of the menu.
I'd go for corporate mode then. Just select corporate and type 0506 before the timer runs out.
that is what I have atm, however I just want the standard windows mobile 5. Also is it possible to remove the o2 logo and the o2 batty battery meter?
thanks agin.

hi
hard reset ur exec and opt for corporate mode ( pin no 0506) while customisation is going on and before timer runs out, as mentioned by another member.
then
U will be hunting down forums to get a O2 battery meter as it will remove all o2 stuff
hope it helps
Jatt
hey guys, sorry for posting so many previous replies, yer, I got it to work, see I have been using a different code, the 5210 code, and that coperate code still has all the o2 stuff however the 0506 cooperate code doens't have any of that, thanks for the help guys, very much appriciated.

Which is Better O2 XDA EXEC ROM, iMATE JASJAR or QTEK 9000

Can someone please share their experience.
I am interrested to know how the devices perform in the Corporate install of the O2 and the JasJar.
Having used both I would recommend the o2 Exec ROM, I've ended up reverting back to this due to stability issues with the Imate ROM. Both ROM's will need registry hacks, go with the o2 one running in corporate mode.
The corporate with the code 0506?
Is the pocket MSN there on that configuration?
Which one is the most generic config?

Yes,you can flash any ROM to your Jasjar , you will lose your setting email..etc,others same as new.
I have just loaded my MDA PRO with the O2 ROM, and tryed all the possible installs (basic, Corporate with code 0506 and personal)
Only the Corporate one is really customisation free. I have myself bypassed the extended_ROM so now I have run only one cab the Default_Enable_VT_RTPlugin_0727_2_signed.CAB which is responcible for the video call. Strangely enough I have the same scin in the dialer as I had in the JasJar ROM...
Also as mentioned by... that by O2 ROM the splash screen is not installed it is not true, as right after the upgrade to the O2 ROM and the reset you see the O2 splash screen, which is untill now the nicest looking splash screen.
What I can say after 2 hours of using the O2 ROM is the following:
1. The amount of free program memory after reset is the same as by JasJar ROM.
2. The device is at least twice as fast as with the JasJar ROM.
Conclusion for now I am much happier with the O2 ROM. Much more stable and responsive.
As I am using Jasjar and after your comments I am considering moving to o2 could you tell me how you configured your Jasjar? Specifically, I am using my jasjar without the extended rom except for the video dialler and the bluetooth patch. It is generally running well except for the need to hard reset once in a while. When comparing with the O2 were you also using Jasjar without extenstion?
Thanks, apap
Having used both ROMs, I think they're essentially the same ROM with a few minor branding cosmetic mods... The two ROMs are only dated 2 wks apart and doubt there are any major differences.
To be honest, I couldn't find any performance gain or loose using either one of them and the O2 ROM seem to be slightly smaller in size (maybe due to the additional Imate games/themes etc?) So after going Imate ROM with O2 extended ROM, I went back to all O2 ROM..
I have a Jasjar. Due to the machine freezing occassionally on arrival of a new SMS I would like to give the O2 ROM a try.
I shall be obliged if someone can tell me that when I have installed the O2 ROM and would like to go back to the i-mate ROM would this be possible. What is the procedure to revert from O2 ROM back to the I-mate ROM.
I will appreciate your help
Regards
OK boys and girls...
I have tryed the O2 ROM the whole day yesterday and last night late reverted to JasJar ROM. Reason: maybe I did something wrong but in corporate install of the O2 ROM with the code 0506 but I had no pdf reader which is unfortunately a crucial software for me. I have tried to install it from the cabs of the O2 ROM and from JasJar ROM but it would not work. Of course the solution might be to get a cracked version. But that fact pissed me off so much that I have loudly cursed O2 and reverted to JasJar.
Observations: I have noticed that O2 ROM has more program memory when you reset the device but once you use the thing the amount of program ROM is the same as in JasJar. So the fact that just after the soft reset there is more ROM is actually not interresting. I also found that in the O2 ROM there is a problem with the start menu opening up first time after a soft reset (If you soft reset the device and then for the first time click on start it takes 10-13 seconds to open it up) and this issue was the biggest issue for me to change to O2 ROM. Pocket MSN seemed to work faster and is more responsive on the O2 and maybe overal performance is a little notch better then JasJar. The Bootup Splash screen on the O2 is much nicer then on JasJar it is really sharp and cool
Conclusions: If you like experimenting try out the O2 ROM because you get to see also (if you try out the Personal install) how badly an operator can F*** up the device, it is beyond my understanding but it is hideous their Launch software, the screen looks like a battle field and I get dizzy looking at it, the task manager which it installs is such a crap only due to a fact that once you close all the progs with the task manager the task manager is still running so to close it too you have to go to settings ->system->memory and close it from there. I can understand that the task manager which you can use from your today screen has to be running in order to work but this task manager you have to start by going to programs and starting it manually, It is comepletely beyond me what is the purpose of such a task manger, but hey maybe I am STUPID ???
The battery icon moved next to the start I can understand the handyness of this, but the O2 icon which does not do anything is also comepletely beyond my understanding. Plus when changing the screen orientation the battery and the O2 icons suddenly get a darker background and it looks like it hangs, but it only looks like it the device does not hang, but it is still an ugly sight to see...
If you opt for the Corporate install with the 0506 code I think you are fine the machine performs as it should, and is very stable, no O2 annoyances and no O2 **** to be seen apart from a couple of icons in the Programs. One of them is the O2 install which I beleive supposed to allow you to change your install type, without making a hard reset, but of course it only works in one direction, meaning that if you have a corporate install with the code 0506 and you want to change to standard or to personal it will work but if you are running the standard and want to go back to corporate or if you are runnning the Personal (full featuer O2) and want to change to standard it will not work. After playing around with that I have found that my simmanager and enroller icons dissapeared, but I was able to get it back by running one of the cabs. it was different with the pdf reader, since I need one I have decided to run that O2 install type thingy and chose first standard install which did not bring the pdf back, and then I have chosen the personal install which would mean that I should have now everything on it , the pdf icon was there but alais the pdf did not work I kept on getting an error.
One more thing when you install the CORP version the dialer skin is the same as by the JasJar so I beleive that that is the generic skin, since the O2 Dialer skin is very vague the buttons are beautiful, but have to much light in them so it is difficult to see the letters
SO I am back to JasJar ROM and I beleive will stick to it for a while.
The progs I run :
TT5.1
Resco Explorer
Skype 1.2 beta
Backgammon
Total commander
All installed on the storage card
I hope this not too boring and helps folks here.

Good luck
The Exec ROM (basic and Corporate) do not suffer from a buggy Messaging app on the JJ ROM. The JJ ROM can cause the JJ to freeze on SMS notification and can crash when receiving emails over UMTS.
You mean the imate email app ?? or the bult in functionality. Because I do not have those symptoms. and I have received only today already about 12 sms messages.
About receiving the e-mail overUMTS: I use exchange active sync over UMTS and works like a charm without any problems...Maybe it freezes when using pop mail or imap? What is your configuration ?
And once again by the "buggy messaging app" you mean the imate e-mail??
Can someone confirm the presence of MSN and PDF inthe O2 Corporate mode ????
Thanx
Jasjar or O2?
I have also been wondering whether to try O2. Overall, after many trials I am quite satisfied with Jasjar. I have not installed extended rom except for bluetooth patch and smardialer cabs. I am running: pocketinformant, magicbutton, repligo, netfront 3.3, resco explorer, pocket mechanic, microsoft voice command. I have done a number of recommended register tweaks. I have also updated the radio to 1.04.
Speed is good.
Remaining problems: Once in a while I need to soft reset to overcome freezes. My main problem now is that I cannot install new programs or updates, nor can I remove programs.
It would be useful to find out how others are dealing with these problems and whether thos running O2 corporate are confronting similar problems.
Should I switch to O2 corporate? There seem to be conflicting views on the matter.
thanks, apap
Churchill:
You wrote a few things about Extended ROMs, Code 0506 (for o2 Corp. mode?), and about bypassing the extended ROMs.
Also there was a mention of bluetooth and radio Cabs...
I would be obliged if you could elaborate and explain them to me.
I have the o2 Exec and would like to experiemnt with the corp. mode since I find that in personal mode it freezes up all too often (not enough memory I guess...) but I wouldn't like to loose essential functionality by changing my ROM.
Thanks in advance
Well I am right now updating my MDA PRo from JasJar Rom to O2 ROM, since I still think the O2 ROM was a notch faster in the corporate mode.
I would not advice you to bypass the extended rom install as I found that some things do not work properly like the sim manager and pdf.
You are fine with the Corporate mode since it is the cleanest of all options including the JasJar.
Also Pocket MSN is more responsive in the O2 corporate mode, then with JasJar ROM.
So just go ahead and do a hard reset and choose corporate mode with the code 0506.
By the Way as I have already mentioned earlier the Boot splash screen of O2 is the best till now. Funny is that I was called by T-Mobile representative a couple of days ago and asked what I think about the MDA PRO. I have told him that MDA PRO with t-mobile customization is history by me and I am running JasJar. He warned me that if something happens to my device they can not help me now since there is no t-mobile rom available to flash it with (I do not understand that where is the release rom? did they loose it or something?) but I am still eligible for my 2 year warranty. He also asked why I have switched to JasJar, I have told him that the t-mobile customisation is crap and that the device was slow and unstable. He confirmed that and also saysd that this is exactly the reason why he is contacting me, since they aparently received a threat from one of the major consumer organisations in the netherlands. So he sayd that they are verifying the isue with the users and it does not look good since everybody complains. So hopefully t-mobile will release new rom soon...
Funny is that I have mentioned to him that I hate the hideous colors and boot splash screen of t-mobile rom, his answere was that the boot splash screen they are extremely proud of since it took a long time to come up with the design.... DUDE how long can it take to come up with something so hideous?
Anyhow....
P.S. I let you guys know how is my MDA PRo with O2 ROM
Adobe acrobat reader is available freely from the adobe site, in the same way as their readers always are:
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readerforppc.html
HTH
The O2 Exec has OS 1.13.48, which has a memory leak bug. Commontime mNotes synchronization cannot free the memory after use, so a 3rd consecutive sync empties out all remaining RAM. This was resolved in OS version 1.13.53, which is on the Jasjar.
Yes, the Exec ROM seems a tad faster, but at least for me the memory leak is decisive for the Jasjar ROM.
Jasjar or O2?
Wiz, have you reverted to Jasjar? Also, I do not quite understand the memory leak problem. Does this mean that there is a danger of losing note information? Finally, any suggestions on how to resolve the inability to add new programs? Does this problem occur only with Jasjar?
Thanks, apap

Some Questions before ROM Upgrade

I've been looking round the forum before doing a ROM upgrade on my XDA Exec but still had a few questions I couldn't find answers to, if anyone can help:
1. If I do the bootloader check (backlight button, power button & reset) can I get back to my normal setup without carrying on the flash?
2. If I want A2DP should I go with the Qtek ROM? I understand the new O2 ROM doesn't have this.
3. I've read many reviews saying listening to MP3s through A2DP gives pretty poor sound quality, anyone any comments on this? Anyone any comments on the Anycom BSH-100, I quite like the look of these as they fold up small.
4. Even if I go for the O2 ROM, I've got a cooked extended ROM I'm going to use instead of the O2 Active UI rubbish, but, is there an easy way to get the O2 settings (gprs etc) on the phone without using the O2 extended ROM?
5. Given I'm going to use my own extended ROM and 3rd party apps are there any downsides to using the Qtek ROM on my Exec? Is this the best option? Is it stable on the exec? Should I be using a different ROM?
6. Where would I see on the phone that I've got the push email capability after the upgrade?
Many Thanks in advance for answers, hopefully I'm not repeating too much that is elsewhere on the site and hopefully it's helpful to have this info in one place anyway.

1: I remember when I was on boot loader mode, I was able to get out of it by taking the battery OFF for a minute and plugging it back in. I also remember that pressing the soft reset pin at the back, while in boot loader mode, does not let you off the boot loader mode. I don't know if there is a simplier way.
2: YES, if you want both A2DP and AKU2, go for the QTEK ROM version 1.30.77 WWE. There is another, a modified ROM with A2DP based on IMate created by Jwright (just search for his name).
3: I am using the Motorola HT820, and the stereo quality for me is 90% out of a 100%. I don't experience stuttering or loss of signal. The less 10% is only because I can't really turn the volume high enough if I want to especially around a noisy place. But if you are on a quiet room, it sound great.
4: I'm from the US, so I don't use the O2 settings for gprs, etc...
5: I have the O2 Executive and I am using the QTEK ROM. So far I am happy with it. I did try the O2's latest ROM, but without A2DP support, it's rubbish. Plus, the QTEK ROM with it's full Ext ROM installed is 2MB smaller than the O2 ROM even in corporate mode.
6: I haven't setup mine either as I don't use push email yet.
Many thanks for the reply!
Think I'll go with the Qtek ROM then.
Anyone any idea on the O2 settings? Or is it a case of manually typing them in again?
Are the new O2 and Qtek extended ROMS on the FTP? I had a look but couldn't find them. Is there anything worth keeping in these? I know I kept most of the small stuff in the old O2 extended ROM (apart from the HUGE O2 Active UI), but I'm not sure what all of it did.
