sorry this is slightly off-topic, and apologies if this forum is unsuitable. it's about a samsung e700 phone i also own.
I bought it secondhand from someone on ebay (stupid me) about 6 months ago (before i got the xda) and it later stopped working, first on o2 then soon after on all UK networks.
I enquired at an o2 shop and they said it is black-listed and nothing can be done about it.
My questions are:
1. will the imei block be global, or just UK? if not then i give it to a friend in tanzania when i go there next week
2. Is there any way to overcome the IMEI block?
hope someone can advise me, before it goes in the can!
cheers
International Mobile Equipment Identifier
I'd say from the first word that yes, it's probably not going to work in Tanzania either.
Blocked IMEI number usually just means one thing - stolen phone. Noting can be done about it either.
The identification is international, but blocking is operator dependant. except that often all the operators of the same country share their database of stolen devices. I guess that this database is not worldwide shared. So could de probably used in other country.

As far as i know the IMEI is only blocked in the UK (dont quote me on it though )

On some phones you can change the IMEI number that is blocked on that phone, but bear in mind it is illegal in this country so not advisable.
I would take it to Tanzania and check if it will work ... if not then bad luck but if it does then your mates got a new phone
It will work outside of UK
Thanks to everyone for the advice, I will take it to Tanzania and see if it works. My friend will be very happy if it does, otherwise I'm sure he could find a shop with equipment to change the IMEI number - probably don't have laws abou it there!
cheers,
Paul
Good news! I am now in tanzania and the phone works fine on the network that my friend uses. He is very pleased with his "new" phone.
Nice, hot and sunny here, but no XDA to play with. Just my baby, friends and nice empty beaches and warm water to swim in. Oh how much I miss the UK
no one have any idea how to spoof or change the IMEI?

Er....why?
Yes actually I do. Quite simply a physical way, which is not illegal in some areas and also you can do it by imei manipulation, but that requires playing with other peopels systems.
will defonatly work abroad.
the phone will only be blocked to UK networks
so should work abroad
Hi all!
I have seen a coupple of Desire's for sale on Ebay and they both have said they get no signal in the UK, but belive that they will only work abroad?
Is this true?
Can they be rooted/updated Radio or anything to work in the UK?
Or is it just pure BS? haha
cheers
Keith
maybe it's the CDMA version of the Desire, which only works in outdated America, and not the GSM version which works everywhere else
Whats the best way of finding out which version it is?
does it say on the back somewhere?
cheers

they're blacklisted.. will never work in the Uk now.. unless you can change their IMEY, which is illegal I might add..
Hope this helps!
Or maybe its a phone that has been reported as stolen. these phones usually get blocked and cant be used within the UK but often work abroad on other networks. then again, it could just be a CDMA version. either way, I'd think twice about buying such a phone from ebay.

you mean, they got stolen and now the thief tries to sell them? If so, someone should report the auction.
Else, difference between CDMA and GSM:

Hi, someone is selling me a really nice T999 in excellent condition, with the problem that the IMEI was blocked, and it won't work on any carrier in the U.S. I live on Dominican Republic, will it work on my country fine? 3G and everything? I know that the 3G band matches the one my operator uses, so no problem there.
Thanks in advance.

You could have read more than the title and suggested something relevant to his question.
OP, I'm not actually 100% sure. But, I would imagine that you'd have no trouble using it.
Simple answer is yes.
Thanks for your answers. I ended up buying one on ebay that was cheaper, with the same problem. Only issue is that the auction says bad esn, but i guess that he got that wrong, and means imei. Here it is: http://www.ebay.com/itm/200888137396?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
Hope it turns out OK. I took a gamble with it.

Well, yeah, you really are taking one then. Because, IMEIs are for GSM phone and ESNs are for CDMA phones. That posting says T999 with a bad ESN... So, is it a T999 or a CDMA variant of the SIII???
Hope everything works out for you, bro.

Yeah, i know bro. People tend to mistake IMEI with ESN, so hopefuly its one of those cases. If it isn't, i will have to return the phone.

Hi. Just to update. Just got the phone. It was indeed the T999 GSM. I got it to work here without a problem. Just remember to check that the 3G band your carrier uses its supported by the phone, otherwise, you wont have 3G.

Hello Luis.
I am considering buying a bad IMEI also for Honduras. Did you had to unlock the phone or something like that or just placed the SIM card and worked fine?

Hi there.
Well, to tell you the truth, i sold the phone as soon as i got it because it wasn't compatible with my carrier's 3G network. I did unlock it, but unlocking was extremely easy, i just rooted the phone and downloaded an app from the Play Store, and the app did the rest of the work. Easy as pie. After that, the phone worked flawless in the small ampunt of time i spent with it (less than a day) and it was a brand new phone :highfive:. If you are wondering the name of the app, i don't know the exact name, but you can try searching "galaxy unlock" on the Play Store, and you will see a couple of apps. Good luck.
Almost same problem

I think that its going to be same, and that its going to work, because the imei was blocked on the country the phone was bought, it should work properly outside that country.
If you have a carrier phone with the IMEI blocked you can unlock it and use it on another carrier. Or you cant? I know u used to could. Also If you call your carrier. for instance tmobile and talk to a superviser they may unlock it for you... They usually do because you're using the phone with their network anyways.. So they still lose money if you decide to go to another carrier.

If your IMEI is blacklisted then the phone has been reported lost or stolen. No US carrier will take a blacklisted phone. Tmobile and att share databases too.

Not always.. Carriers will block the IMEI even you dont pay your bill for so long.. A friend of mine gave me his Sidekick 4G and he stopped paying tmobile. After a while that phone stop working. When I called tmobile they said it was because of the IMEI has been blocked. I said that I have this phone for a long time and you need to turn it back on.. 48 hours later they did

I new it was to good to be true, the reason my phone keeps saying cannot use voice or connot use sim 1, is due to someone selling me a phone that was previously on a contract! Actually illegal in most of the world, not simply the US.
How does that pay work? I though the reason to blacklist IMEI's was because they were reported stolen. Not much point if you can just pay a small ammount to own a stolen phone?
