XDA 2s red phone button minimises/closes apps - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 General

I have an O2 xda 2s, and I've noticed that pressing the red phone button (normally used to hang up on a call or close the phone app) also closes any other applications I have running! It actually minimises them, i.e. they are still running in Settings/Memory/Running Programs. This is not ideal! Is this a known bug? Have any developers come across this? If so, any suggestions with how to prevent it from closing apps?
Thanks, Kath

i don't think its a bug mate i think its supposed to do that...

You might want to install a task manager to keep track of apps that are in the background. SPB battery bar comes with one, and I think it's free (not the "pro" version). It allows you to quickly jump between running apps.

Whenever you hit the Red Phone button it will minimize the application running. Remember, this may take a bit of your resources since it does not shut down the application. I would advise you taking a third party application which will close the application or even show you the runningn applications that were left running instead of going through the standard Settings - Memory procedure. Try SPB products or Battery Pack. They ain't free though...

as i understand it, the red fone button mimicks the operation of the X software button on the upper right corner of your window when outside the phone app. on desktops this would be the "close application" button but its default behavior on ppc's in general would be to minimize the app. kinda annoying but i guess it speeds up load times of commonly used apps. the only resource i see it hogging would be your memory as it is still loaded in your appications memory space but i dont think it will take up cpu time as it should be in sleep mode or sumthin like that.
there are a lot of add ons out there that can change that behavior to "close" instead of "minimize/standby". asides from what they recommended above, you can also try WISBar. dunno if it works on WM2003 tho (i use it on my WM2002 pda).

Thanks for your replies. My problem isn't so much that pressing the button is minimising rather than closing the apps, it's that I don't want it to minimise OR close my app, I want my app to remain open even when the red button is pressed. It seems like a wierd design feature to me. Does anyone know how to overcome the app being minimised?
Thanks again,
Kath

Dynamo 2 lets you switch between and close apps. And it looks cool!

Use the stylus on the icon at the top right of the screen you want to close. Or use the d-pad to navigate to select the window, then hold the middle d-pad button for half a sec to close it.

kathhawkes - use something like ae button http://ae.inc.ru/aebplus_t.html to remap red button to something else. Then, make that "something else" be to just hang up. It should override default functionality.

Close button???

Hi,
Does anyone know how to make applications close when you press the "OK" HARDWARE key? I've tried Switch, Magic Button and SPB. Each closes applications when I use the stylus to tap on the "x" or "ok" button on the screen, but only minimize apps when I press the "ok" hardware button.
(IMHO, it's rather silly of Microsoft and HTC not to make this possible by default. Especially as the call-end hardware button already does the job of minimizing applications and returning you to the today screen...)
Please advise.
Thanks.

I've been using the HTC Close Button cab on my Orbit.
Its a small app that really close the progs with the "X".
And this works very good!!
Coolgadget,
Thanks for that .........spot on, just what I've been looking for, why didn't O2 put that on as standard???
Rob
I use AE button plus (google) which allows me to map such functions to whatever button I choose.
The unregistered version is all that is needed.

Coolgadget, thanksfor the cab, but I'm afraid it hasn't helped. It is behaving exactly as the oters did. Yes, it closes applications when you tap on the "X" on the screen, but it only minimizes the app when you press the "ok" HARDWARE button (emphasis on hardware, not on-screen). Could I be doing something wrong?
What I want is a way to actually close applications by pressing a hardware key (helps one handed operation when on the move).
Any idea, anyone?

Uniqueboy, I just downloaded AE button, I'll let you know how it goes. From the literature, I think it might be the answer...
Thanks.

[HELP] On-Screen Keyboard Options Pop-up ALL THE TIME

I don't know is it an issue only I have, or maybe it's a well-know problem that Touch Pro2 users have to deal with but whenever I hit the lowest, middle part of the screen, the Keyboard's Options pop-up, although there's no icon to click. The on-screen keyboard on the other hand never pop's-up by itself, so the issue only regards the Option's box.

I find this highly irritating, 'cause it happens EVERYWHERE: when I try to hit OK in G-Alarm; when I'm not too precise with the Sense slider or - and this is extremely irritating - when I play games designed for Portrait mode (the upper screen was taken while playing "The Simpsons Arcade"). Portrait mode games are just unplayable (hence the controls are often in the lower screen parts).
I don't really use the options box. If I ever use the on-screen keyboard (which isn't often) I have it always set to Phone Keyboard when in Portrait, and to Full Qwerty in Landscape. I never change those options so if it's possible to disable the Option's box all together that'll be just fine.
I'm not sure is it relevant, but I use an official ROM upgrade to Sense 2.1
Oh come on! I'm sure someone can help. Please? This is a truly irritating bug.
dude, i've never had this happen unless the keyboard icon was present in the middle. sure, if i hit a little weird (which technically I think is to the right of the icon (?)) that screen pops up..
I have no idea why its happening, but since no one has replied, I wonder if it is a glitch or bug w/ just what you got..? have you tried any other roms or resetting to factory default?
Not yet - I'd hate to reinstall all my applications, set them all over again and tweak the phone from scratch (I know I can do a backup but if I would decide to install a new ROM I would switch from the official upgrade (Sense 2.1 with WM6.5) to a cooked 2.5 and the backup wouldn't work).
I don't really fell like doing that just to fix one minor problem.
It's like with bugs on Windows PC - people usually let you to format your disc and install the OS again, but I'm always able to fix any issues I have without formating the device (I haven't done that in a year).
But I'm not that good with Windows Mobile, so I'm asking for your help, oh mighty ones
I'm sure it's something that could be fixed within the registry of with Total Commander - I just don't know how to find the bug myself.
Maybe someone could post his/hers setting from the registry (from directions that have something to do with the on-screen keyboard) so I could compare them with my reg keys?

[Q] Any other GNex ROMs with BIG MENU BUTTON?

Okay so I'm sure this probably isn't important to that many people but one of the things I really hated about ICS is the disappearance of the menu button. I don't like the way Google changed things by adding another dotdotdot menu button inside apps, because a lot of times that menu button is at the top of the screen.
This is a problem because this phone is HUEG. Trying to reach that menu button with one hand makes me afraid I'm going to drop my device.
Anyway for most of my time on the GNex I've used Apex ROM, which has had the option to bring back the big menu button which is always visible and fits in line with the rest of the buttons, like so:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",

}
Big menu button, right in front of the back button. While the placement is not the best in the world (I'd prefer the back-menu-home-taskswitcher arrangement personally) at least it has the big button. Most other ROMs seem to only have the ability to enable the legacy app dotdotdot menu button permanently.
Now, Apex has been updated and the big menu button is gone, instead replaced with the option to permanently enable the dotdotdot menu button that ICS uses for legacy apps. I don't like this, because it's off-center, looks bad and is more annoying to press.
I'm not particularly keen on sticking with an old version of a ROM if I can avoid it.
My question is this: is there another, or more than one, GNex ROM that lets me have a big menu button as well as keeping my must-have features (longpress volume keys to skip music tracks, multiple lockscreen shortcuts, notification power widget and all that jazz)?
As much as I like Apex (and the dev will be looking into re-adding the big menu button) I'd also like to check out other potential ROMs as well if they also have the big menu button.
I'm rocking foxhound Black Ed 0.6.. uses apex which I prefer and looks like this:

I'm using SlimICS and although the menu button isn't deault, you can set it up how you described, and I'd imagine several of the other ROMS such as AOKP have the ability.
In Slim all you need to do is go to the Advanced Slim Settings and make changes to how many/which keys you want in the "Navigation bar" section, and then change "Menu visibility" to "Always show invisible icons". Now you have the menu button as a regular key, but the three dots don't show.
Strongly agree with your complaint. Came from a gingerbread device here. Had my nexus only a week but gone thru several roms... try liquid smooth. You can customize the hell outta the buttons.
Or try straight AOKP. So many settings, this is one of the basic, easy to change ones.

[APP] SudokuTouch - A touch input friendly sudoku app

I've tested many Sudoku apps on Windows 8, but most of them are just very awkward to use. Neither mouse nor keyboard were really fun - although the touch input offered so many new possibilities. Partly the sudokus aren't really good, because they often had multiple solutions.
Finally I decided to do this better. I liked the result, but I think, you could judge this way better. Of course I would be pleased to get feedback and suggestions.

it looks good, but i see room for a few improvements.
a message comes up at the start of a game, and the button to dismiss it is tiny and tucked away in a corner.
the button should be closer to the center of the screen, and it should be a bit bigger(wider)
the difference between generated squares and filled-in squares is too distracting.
perhaps it will work better if all squares are white, generated numbers are black, and filled-in numbers are dark-grey.
the close and move buttons overlap with the 3 and 6, this looks unprofessional.
i suggest you add a little "titlebar‘ on top like with windowed windows in Windows...
perhaps you could add a "game over" if you fill the field with a mistake.
it took me a while to realize that an extra 3 was the reason the clock didn't stop in my first game.
and last one: a paid version.
the ads are very distracting, and in a paid adfree version you could also use this space to display a permanent keypad.

Many of your suggestions are great and are going to be released in the next version
Btw. there's an option to mark error's in the application bar - so if you don't find your mistakes, you could mark all wrong numbers red

Question AOSP ROM's are closing recents automatically?

Good afternoon!
I have a question about AOSP based ROM's. At first I thought this was only occurring in the Nameless ROM but I can also find this behavior on other custom ROM's. It seems that apps are getting closed automatically after some time, as if I would go to the 'Recents' screen (or however this screen is called) and I would swipe those apps away.

}
This is definitely noticeable when I wake up in the morning, almost all my apps are gone from Recents while I almost never swipe any apps away. I find this behavior not efficient since my phone never makes use of the 12GB RAM which I've spend extra money on. Here you can see that only 7 GB is actually used (including cached processes).
When I open up all my apps at once my RAM usage goes up but after some time it seems to close apps and it goes back to 5-6 GB of usage or so.
I find this frustrating. I have an iPhone 12 from work and I use that phone rarely. But a week later I can expect my app to still be open where I left it.
In the ROM's I tried, I tried disabling any battery savers if there were any, without result. I also have FKM installed and tried changing some memory related kernel settings which did appear to have some effect but that also might be a placebo and tbh I'm not fully aware what kernel settings I should apply.
TLDR: Can anyone advice me how I can stop my AOSP rom from clearing apps in the background?
Thanks for your input
Kind regards,
GolovaRaoul
Hi,
I have not tried any custom ROM yet, but I can confirm that default ROMs for "OnePlus, Xiaomi, Samsung" are all doing the same behavior once the phone is setting down and not being used for a while "sleep mode" this actually good in my opinion, it will automatically close all apps except the apps you are choosing to not to be closed "locked apps" in oxygen os, you can select multiple apps to prevent them from being closed during night or even when you tap "close all" button.
So, I think this is an Android optimization to save battery during night not only in AOSP ROMs.
Thanks for your response
Well I don't like this behavior personally. It takes time and processing power to re-open apps and navigate them back to the stage where I had them before. I need to relaunch Spotify 5 times per day which is annoying and I really shouldn't need to on a flagship smartphone with 12 GB of RAM.

This actually not belong to RAM capacity itself, it is system implementations and how should apps behave. As I said it will only close the apps during "sleep period" and you can select multiple apps that you want them run in background all the time see attached photos.
You are welcome

Yeah you could be right about the behavior. I still want to change it tho. And by default, AOSP does not have something like 'memory locking' and this is a feature of Oyxgen OS.
