very simple car stereo adapter method - General Accessories

mate of mine visited me a couple of weeks ago; he drove over in his early 90's model jeep. when i got in i noticed that he had one of those cd-tape deck adapters. the original stereo of the jeep was an AM-FM radio with a tape deck. he also had a sony walkman in the shelf under the dash. the walkman was plugged in the cigar charger (for power) and it had a tape deck adapter. i think you guys have seen this one or another; in place of the headphones the jack leads to a cassette tape which goes in the car stereo. using this allows you to play a cd via the tape-deck. my buddy wanted to keep his jeep in original condition thus he never opted to put in a new high fi stereo.
anyway i noticed that the plug going to the cd player uses a 3.5mm jack. i had a 2.5mm to 3.55mm plug converter for using other headphones for the xda. so i took out the cd jack and plugged it into my converter. i then used the media player of the xda, turned on the tape deck and viola the mp3s from my sd card were played. there was a slight sound from the tape deck but that was quickly drowned out when we increased the volume.
so bottomline; if you still have a stereo with a tape deck you can still adapt your xda to play your mp3s.
cheers

XDA with MP3 & Satnav in car

I'm looking at getting this carcomm cradle as my in car solution for my XDA2 : http://www.totalpda.co.uk/product4740_0.aspx
As i understand it, assuming I correctly wire the cradle kit to my headunit's telemute cable, when a call comes in, my stereo will be muted/paused and the cradle's speakers & mic will kick in. I gather TOMTOM instructions will work the same way.
I also have a Sony headunit with an Aux in. I'd like to use the stereo headset jack to play all that MP3 goodness into my stereo. This should reduce the amount i spend on CDR's
My question is whether having the headphone jack plugged in will stop the car kit from getting the phone call audio when a call comes in. Will the XDA try to take mic in from the headset jack or the car kit. Or will it end up dazed and confused, and slump in the footwell of my car nibbling it's toenails and rocking slowly backwards and forwards? Come to that, will I?
Hope this makes sense
I can't help you, but I enjoyed the question...
I have roughly the same setup you have, except the car cradle is only used for charging. I have all audio (TomTom, MP3 and phone) from the headset jack, including mic.
Works like a charm, you don't really need a carkit as you can feed all audio to the car stereo
I had a look at that carcomm set. It looks like the cradle blocks the headset jack of the XDA !
For mp3 audio and phone audio, I use a very cheap device called "car baby". This consists of a small clip on device with led and on/off switch. The device is rechargable and comes with lighter plug. Basically you just go to a blank preset on your in car radio, play audio on your xda 2, then tune radio to pick up the audio, the volume on the xda 2 needs to be pretty low to prevent distortion, once setup all audio is routed through the radio allowing very reasonable hands free phone calls and mp3 playback. It also comes with a nice little mount for a phone which has suction or vent mount adaptors, this isnt big enough for xda 2 but it looks very neat and will work with lots of normal size phones. I think it works on fm frequency around 106mhz.
Thanks for your feedback guys.
@ pleun - I was planning on 'modifying' the cradle to either present me with access to the jack socket or to actually plug in a jack, but this would have to be fairly flexible as the jack is obviously at an unhelpful angle.
@cruisin-thru & pleun (again) - thanks for the ideas, My only concern is that I don't really want to have to switch the headunit to a FM channel or the Aux channel when a call comes in - too much distraction when driving. It would be fine if i was only going to be playing MP3's but i will want to continue to use the CD or radio from time to time!

Modding XDA II audio out for plugin to stereo...

Hi,
I recently got a car and and want to use one of those cassettes with the cables coming out on it to exercise my grand plan of outputting the audio from my XDA II to the car stereo.
So what I need to do is have a cable that works along the lines of 2.5mm male to 3.5mm male / female.
I have tried modding a spair XDA II handsfree kit I had, removing the head phones and tieing a 3.5mm male jack to it (so that I could retain the mic and dialing abilities) however there was no audio sent down the line in tests.
Is it possible to buy something that meets these requiremnets? (although I would like to retain dialing ability). Or is there some sort of guide somewhere?
You can buy an adapter at www.expansys.com
thanks for the link, I'd like to retain the calling ability tho , hence my wondering bout modding a set of ear phones...
you can get an adaptor which connect to the xda
and have a dongle with
1 mono jack for mic
and
1 stereo mini jack for lineout to pc, stereo, speakers or what ever
There is a very cheap and simple wireless rechargeable device called a Car Baby, this clips over the speaker and outputs all audio to a free fm channel on the radio, no cables to plug in, it also serves as a handsfree for the phone. Look on ebay and search car baby.
audio output
hi..i have an xda2, which sits in my modded xda car kit cradle, and there are is a jack plug [fem] with the kit which outputs all audio..i made a lead which plugs into my aux input, on my head unit, and bought a 1gig sd card, and loaded up my mp3,s...it rocks. on the subject of modding ur headset..that should work.....however, the wires are covered with a laquer...before u connect them...strip them and hold a match under them and burn off the laquer...it will work, i tried it first!
Right, 2 things to check out then, Car baby and the toast the wires method. Roll on this evening...
When checking car baby make sure it is the rechargeable type.

If you get one of these make sure your phone/pda is on low volume when tuning, then adjust until clarity is best, if you have too hig volume on phone/pda it will distort the audio.
3way-stereo to FM transmitter
This works:

You just have to be careful wiring the 4-way XDA jack to the 3-way stereo socket for your FM transmitter

How play my EVO through car speakers...

My car is a few years old and doesn't have a place to plug in my EVO directly for playing music through the speakers.
What are some of my other options? I've have tried the gizmos that try to send the music to an FM station and play it that way, but those were very static-y and unreliable.
Any other ideas?
Do you have a cassette deck?

desides a fm transmitter or if you have a cassette player nothing really. its the holiday season so maybe someone will you a gift card so you can get a head unit with aux ports and maybe bluetooth
Deck with Auxillary in, or A2DP Bluetooth.
I bought a Kensington LiquidAUX Bluetooth car kit. Works great, crystal clear sound.

A cassette deck now that funny stuff. Do you think anyone in the US still has a cassette deck? I remember the day metal cassettes were the best man they sounded awesome.
I really think your best bet is to buy a new deck. If your evo has the DSP manager it sounds great over bluetooth.

Actually, my 2007 Lexus GS350 has a cassette player, 6 disk changer and no aux port. I use the cassette adapter for IPOD and Evo.
My Ford Windstar 2000 has a cassette tape player, that's what I use
Ha my old 66 Ford Fairlane still has the dual 8-tracks I put in it way back when. Course it has been garaged for years, but i'm going to have to go see if they still work now! Had two of them so I could rewind one while still listening to another.
you need an aux input adapter wired into your cd player/stereo for BEST sound.
goto your local car audio shop and ask, they'll know what you're talking about.
PIE is a great brand if you want to install yourself.
http://www.pie.net/
buy yourself a composite rca -> 3.5mm male adapter cable and connect it all up.
i got one in my 04 lincoln ls, i used my evo as my mp3 player and music player in the car. best auto investment ever, lol

Can you tell us what year/model car you have and what stereo option (if any)? There may be a way to wire a bluetooth adapter in via external CD changer inputs if that option exists on your factory head.
This is what i use: http://www.amazon.com/Cygnett-GrooveTraveller-Transmitter-Charger-Adapter/dp/B001HNDSIK
it transmits and charges my ipod and has a AUX in on the side for my EVO. works great for me.

i have a sirius satellite radio (sportster 4 or 5) that has an aux jack in it. i connect a 3.5mm cable to it and the headphone jack of my phone and get perfect sound! only thing i have to do is pause the radio turn media volume up on my phone and it is just like a direct connection to my car radio.
A battery operated FM transmitter works without static, but they are increasingly difficult to find.
Get a FM modulator, they are cheap & easy to install. The sound will be better than most transmitters.

I hook my Evo up to my aux on my head unit through the headphone jack to play music on the sd card or Slacker and it's always low sounding. Much lower than my regular cd's.

I second this recommendation. I bought the Schosche modulator from Amazon for ~$28. Yeah, a new head unit with Bluetooth, HD, and aux in would have been nicer but also would cost a lot more.
The kit came with a small trim bezel containing the jack & a power switch; the bezel has a small piece of double-stick tape to mount somewhere on your dash. I pulled the jack & switch out, and mounted them directly in my dash, so it looks a bit more "finished."
The audio sounds good. There is a very slight hiss/crackle that seems to be coming from my car charger. If the charger is disconnected the sound is clean. The hiss is so small that I can't really hear it when there is music/podcast playing.
I would like to make a custom patch cable so I can wire in a microphone mounted up near my visor. This way I won't have to unplug the audio line when I get an incoming call.
I'm also using the Mountek mount described in another thread. It works well. Overall I'm quite happy. It didn't cost much and took less than an hour to install. I'm really enjoying Pandora & podcasts now during my commute time!

FM transmitter

Would it be possible for our phones to have a FM transmitter so we can wirelessly play music through our car without a cord/attachment? Or does our phone simply not have the software to be able to?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA
I think it's more an issue with hardware, not software.
Luckily, if you search Amazon, there are a lot of cheaper ones you can find that work pretty well. I unfortunately have a car deck that does not have the AUX input (it does allow me to plug my ipod in through the glove compartment though) so I know what you're going through.
Ummmm... Ok?
I also do not have an AUX input, but today I just installed this into my car (the itrips, etc. just didn't do the job) and I am loving it. It wasn't as smooth a install as I would have liked, but the quality is far superior to the wireless ones.

There are many 'Headphone jack' FM transmitters out there.. Most by Belkin, Scosche, Koss, etc will be along the same quality and roughly the same $40ish bucks. There are actually a couple Bluetooth visor-clip handsfree adapters now that have the Bluetooth music profiles and an FM transmitter built in if you dont want an extra dongle hanging out of the phone. I have a Jabra laying around that does that and it worked pretty well.. I used it before I bought a built-in speakerphone kit.
--- Umm seriously, why do I have to wait 5 minutes to edit my own post? That's just stupid.
I bought a belkin for my sister for her birthday and had to return it because the sound is terrible but then I found one at walmart for about $30 in the automotive department and it sounds as crisp as if is connected in an auxiliary jack, it also as a usb port to charge your phone and if I am not mistaken it can mount your phone giving it control, and if you have a well placed light or charging position it would be convenient, it also has slot to mount a regular sd card directly... it has a display with controls and remote control included.
world wide web dot walmart dot com /ip/Scosche-FM-Transmitter/16652629
I bought an install kit like the one posted from amazon. It puts a little ground noise in the speaker, especially if I use the charger simultaneously. It's all strapped in, inside the console, and my six foot cord comes out of a small hole in the back the cd pocket under the radio.
The right way to do it would be to power the modulator directly from the battery, not the radio fuse. And maybe even a power-line filter depending on how the modulator acts. But who has time for that?

[Q] Interesting iBolt Conundrum

I apologize if this is the wrong forum for this-it seemed like the best option for me. I know that it pertains to a GSIII accessory, but the problem I'm detailing could pertain to other car docks as well.
Up until recently, I've been using a tape deck adapter to connect my Android phone to my car stereo to listen to music, make calls, etc. I recently received an iBolt car dock for my phone for Christmas. It uses a microUSB connection to charge the phone and stream audio to the stereo. Normally, the audio would stream to an auxiliary plug in the stereo, but my car doesn't have such a plug.
My thinking was that I would get a 3.5mm stereo coupler to connect my tape deck adapter to the dock, and then to my phone through the microUSB connection. However, this doesn't seem to be working. With this setup, any music I play comes out of my phone's speaker, rather than the car stereo. What's odd is that when I connect my phone to the dock, I can hear the car stereo speakers pop a bit, indicating an audio connection.
I have confirmed that the coupler works properly with a different setup. (I connected my earbuds to my phone using an auxiliary cable as a bridge) Am I doing something wrong, or is this type of connection simply impossible for some reason? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'll provide some hardware information below, if that helps.
I'm also aware that I could just keep using the tape deck adapter for sound directly, but it would be nice to eliminate that extra step in hooking my phone up.

Hi there, first of all you must make sure under "Settings - Accessory - Audio output" that this is selected when having the iBOLT Dock connected to your car 3.5 mm "cassette in" solution. It should work fine for playing music but Samsung does not transfer phone calls to an external speaker, only sounds from applications. Hope this helps?

I couldn't find the setting that you were talking about, though I found a different one that has solved the issue...sort of. I couldn't find any "accessory" menu under settings, but I did find a setting: "Settings - Advanced - Sound - Use USB Dock Audio" This lets the phone stream audio to the stereo with my convoluted little setup.
The new issue is that the sound coming out of the stereo is of terrible quality compared to simply plugging the tape deck adapter directly into the phone. I also hear a static-y, squeaky noise coming out of the speakers when nothing is playing. Is this simply due to the odd nature of the connection, or is there something I can do about it?
