active sync 4 with wm2003se? - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 General

as the header states, can i upgrade to active sync 4 and use it with wm2003se ? or is it like mainly for wm2005??
cheers. 8)

im sure you can, i mean just download it and try, there is no harm in trying...

I upgraded to AS4 when I had my Himalaya on 2k5, but now i have my xda2s running 2k3se with as4 and it works perfectly, you even get all the backup/restore options you lose with 2k5 devices.

cool, cheers people!!!! 8)

But I had a problem with ac4 the other day, when I had to do a restore.
Although I had made my backups with ac4, non of them would restore through ac4, so I had to install ac3.8 instead, and use that to restore my ac4 generated backups.
Otjerwise I've had no problems whatsoever with ac4, and I think it syncronizes faster.
I'm still on 1. edition 1.72wwe

How to transfer all Data from MDA3 to MDA Pro?

Hello,
I've got a MDA-III and a MDA-Pro.
Sprite Backup doesn't work under WM2005, so how can I transfer my data
to my new MDA-Pro, especially the SMS folders.
Thanks in advance,
Dino
Sprite is preparing a beta. We (the testers) will see to what extent this will be part of the "device upgrade", but my hunch is that you should not hold your breath ... WM2003 are WM5 are strutcurally different to an extent that the databases even have changed location etc ... I don't see how they would be able to provide this as a feature.
ok, now I've copied everything manually to my mda3, except my SMS messages.
Does anybody know how I can transfer them?

Help with contacts softkey on Black 2.0

Made a stupid mistake and deleted the contacts shortcut in my startup folder. I then loaded softkeys! I now have no way of going back to my contacts on the right softkey. I have looked throughout my windows folder for the pcontacts and I can't find it. I love Black 2.0 and won't go back! Don't want to have to reset for this stupid mistake. Can someone help or post their contacts shortcut here. Thanks!

You can create the link yourself with...
:MSCONTACTS?outres.dll,-10000
and then put the shortcut in any place.
Thanks for the reply....I am still in the dark about your answer....do you mean to place this in the registry or somewhere else. I hate to sound like such a noob.
I got it....thanks for the help! You guys are awesome
Contacts won't open!!
I recently upgraded to Black pro 2.0. I love it! However, I used spb backup 1.5.5 to backup my pim info (mainly contacts). Now, when I restore my pim I can no longer open contacts. I tried using the softkey, tried openning it using the phone utility. I tried going back to 2.11 ROM... but the problem persists. I even tried to use other backup programs but still come across the same problem. Other programs that use the contacts database (like Vbirthday) can't access the contacts either. I have Agendus installed and when I go to the contacts in the Agendus menu all my contacts are there, so I think this is a problem in the shell or maybe a registry fix would do the trick... I don't know. I appreciate any help.

Id strongly advise NOT to use spb backup....there are such differences in the new Black ROM that restoring a backup can cause allsorts of problems.
The BEST thing you can do is to get yourself signed up for an exchange account somewhere like mail2web....you get push email but more importantly for you the contacts are synced......so even after a hard reset all it takes is a quick sync and your contacts/calendar/tasks and emails are back in the device.

Thanks for the reply! But I was actually hoping for a way to restore my contacts from my storage card, since I have over 300 contacts it would take me too long to type it all back again. There must be a way to fix this problem. Well... I'll keep trying to find an answer; thanks anyway.

Take the plunge dude once your info is in exchange it is automatically updated if you add or remove a contact etc.....SUCH A SERIOUS TIMESAVER.
and doesnt rely on SD cards or anything else.

Can you export with Agendus and then HR and import?
I'm saying cause seems that restore with SPB Backup dosn't work with contacts in the way it must to do. I try to use in the past, and finally take all my critical information to an exchange server activesync.

Before I upgraded to Black Pro 2.0, SPB backup would work fine even with contacts. I never had any problems with WM5 1.35 ROM. What do you mean by HR? (sorry if this is a stupid question).

HR = Hard Reset
when you say you never had any problem, means that you tested to restore the same backaup before, and this same backup now in Black 2.0 dosn't work?
Or you are trying to restore diferents backups?

Same backup. Won't work in Black 2.0. I did what you suggested (exported a contact from Agendus to my storage card in csv format), HR but can't (don't kknow how to) import it neither with contact nor with Agendus.
Maybe I should just downgrade to WM5 1.35 again. Could anyone tell me how? I tried running the upgrading utility for 1.35 ROM but it doesn't recognize the usb connection. I thought it might be a problem with the SPL 1.40 Olipro and changed to 1.10 Oli... still the same problem. I tried changing it to 1.10 MGF but mtty won't recognize the usb connection either. It's not a problem with my usb port because everything else works fine, including the phone syncronization. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks mrvanx! I'll try it later. But first, one last attempt to solve the problem... maybe the culprit is not Black 2.0 but radio 1.38.

I was wondering why people advise an exchange account instead of simply syncing with outlook. I use outlook to sync contacts and appointments and it works well as a backup... After my Black VI upgrade simply connect and sync. So am i missing something ?

I think you can Import your exported CSV into Outlook, and then sync with TyTN trought ActiveSync.

There are same advantages doing with exchange (like i see):
First of all, you can sync in any place, trought GPRS or 3G, so you dosn't need be connected to your PC to restore your information.
Second, the servers normally has their backup policy, so your information is more secure.
Thirt, every time you change one elemment in contacts or calendar, this change sync on the fly to server, so your information is the same in server and in ppc everytime.
After three years of use, this is the most secure method i find to take this information secure and avaylable.

Thanks for the tips. I went back to WM5 1.35, restored my info with SPB backup and it worked. So I syncronized with Outlook, went back to Black 2.0 and syncronized again... contacts and tasks back to my device and working fine. Now I'll see about this exchange mail. By the way... which is the best one? P.S.: could this problem I had be something of interest to Jasjamming? Since Black is his ROM and had some compatibility issues with various backup programs... maybe he would like to have a look at it. Thanks again.

Mac & WM6

how do I upgrade? and will I lose functionality with missing sync? would there be another way to connect to the laptop usint something else if missing sync isn't compatible yet, or should I just wait?
You lose missing sync It doesn't work with WM6 unfortunatly. There is no other way to connect, unless you (like me) have an Intel Mac and can use Parallels or Bootcamp
A solution for WM6 and MAC
I have been a PDA and Markspace user for many years and always have the same problem when upgrading form 2003 to WM5 to WM6. Markspace tries to keep up but there seems to always be a delay.
FINALLY I have stumbled across a solution that works really well to sync both iCal and Address Book.
Here is the link.

Give it a bash and see what you think.
To transfer files use BLUETOOTH EXPLORER.

You lose compatibility with MissingSync, which is stupid, since the phone uses the same protocol. For whatever reason, the phone detects MissingSync and refuses to continue.
I gave up on MissingSync a few months ago. It was just too buggy -- sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. Luckily I use my phone with an Exchange server, so 99% of my data is synced over the air with the server (man, that's nice after ROM updates). For moving over files, I just use bluetooth --- as far as installing applications, I ended up moving almost all of the CAB files over to the SD card since I ended up reinstalling things 2-3 times a week due to new ROM's.
ActiveSync just works; it's really a shame that M$ won't build a Mac ActiveSync client that interfaces properly with iSync and Entourage. Hell, it'd be nice if they'd give all of the specs to Mark/Space so they can build a sync client that's actually as reliable as ActiveSync. It really seems like Microsoft doesn't realize that they could make tons of money if they'd throw more support at Macs -- they make most of their money on Office and other programs, not the operating systems. Heck, if they made a Linux version of Office, they'd sell tons of copies -- and it wouldn't be that hard to recompile it, since Office Mac is already running on Unix -- they'd just have to substitute some of the Carbon libraries.
Anyway... that being said -- when I need to flash ROM's, etc; I use Parallels. Make sure you turn "Auto attach USB" and don't plug your phone in before starting Windows. It works very well - I haven't had a problem yet. But I would strongly recommend using HardSPL and not flashing radios or SPL's via Parallels, just in case -- you can easily recover from a failed OS flash, but a failed radio flash can be very bad. Use a PC for those... or even the SD flash method described in the wiki (altho the stupid .DS_Store and .Trashes files seem to mess with that and prevent it from working -- so you have to slide the card into your phone with the OS running and delete those before restarting).

actually i had issues with the "auto attach USB" feature on parallels. It would tell me that the USB device is being used by the mac os...
other than that i flash everything through parallels and haven't had a problem yet.

Also is anyone having problems sending files to their macs with resco file explorer?
I have an intel mac. i just use parellels for almost everything. I use bootcamp for flashing roms. For installing programs i just transfer .cab files over with a card.
How do i send files over via bluetooth? That would be easier.
Wow the solution was right under my nose!

Hey fone_fanatic I wish I took a bit more notice of your sig.
If anyone wants a great solution - this is it!!!
Have been using it for a couple of weeks and have upgraded and hard reset at least 20 times and it syncs perfectly everytime.

Does anyone have earlier ROM for Cingular 8525?

I am a newbie and not myself a developer, so if this question or my accessing this list is out of line, let me know. I am looking for a way to restore the former ROM that was on my device before upgrading.
Cingular/ATT just sent out an upgrade on their 8525 ROM, not to Windows Mobile 6, but just a more enhanced Windows Mobile 5 with push to talk, and some other changes.
After upgrading the ROM, my backup file for my Personal Databases will not restore. The Sprite Backup (5.1) backup file was the only storage I had of important data at least for the last four months, when I stopped being able to activesync it. The support staff at Sprite said they got my personal databases file to work, so I know the file itself is not corrupted, and the data is there, but every time I try to restore it to my 8525 (ie, following a hard reset, with and without the sbu file that Sprite created for moving from one ROM to another)... every time I try to restore it, it corrupts my Calendar and Contacts programs, bringing in no data, and making the Contacts program unusable.
My best guess is that the only way I can regain access to this data is to restore to the old ROM, then fix the ActiveSync problem, and save the data that way, then reupgrade to the new ROM, and sync that.
I give all this detail in case someone has a better suggestion as to what might be causing the Personal Database file not to restore, and not to work following the upgrade.
Short of that, I'd be interested if anyone can show me where I might restore the old ROM. Private replies are accepted.
Tom Bartlett
Here's the original 1.34.502 ROM for the 8525. If you're needing the UNofficial 2.06 leaked release, I don't have that one. . . sorry
Thanks so much!
Tom Bartlett
I am not sure how to use what the link downloaded. Perhaps my mistake was in downloading it to my laptop, for later use? It came as a large zip file, with three RAW files.
How do I use that download to change my ROM?
My guess is that I'll need to have my 8525 synced in Active Sync, and do the hit "run" rather than "save as" ?
Tom
CRAP!! Disregard that file. . . it's the wrong one. I'm uploading the CORRECT one right now.
I'm soooo sorry. . . I'll be back with the correct link as soon as it's uploaded.
Here it is. . . the CORRECT file.

Moving PIM from WM5 to WM6?

This should be easy to search for.. and yes I did find the PIM Backup thread.. and yes I wish I had used it...
Note: I do NOT have Outlook sync as an option.. so I need/needed a way to do this without going via a PC.
So I tried 2 methods:
a) Database backup with Sprite Backup
b) copied pim.vol to my Storage Card
What I'm finding post-WM6-upgrade is that I can read my PIM data.. but I cannot create new PIM data (appts, contacts).
Do I have any practical way to recover (short of flashing back to WM5 and using PIM Backup?)
Thanks,
Mike
Confused.
AFAI understand, you seems to have backed up with Sprite Backup and copied the pim.vol. And you have flashed into WM6, now unable to get these info back.
If so, you may want to try the WM5 emulator (from M$) for the PC.
Try PIM-Backup??

works a treat.

Yep. Held out all this time, watching the ROMs and finally thought it was worth the plunge.
Mike
The best thing you could do is start using exchange. Your PIM data is right there, all you do is sync once youve flashed and your contacts/calendar etc... is back on the device.
DeniaL's service is good, a $10 donation isnt much to ask for a good service especially with exchange 2007 (so you get HTML mail in WM6). Youl get push email aswell, if somebody emails you at (for example) [email protected] it instantly arrives at your device.
I do not want my personal PIM mixed into my work environment (which is my only PC). So I am mostly self-contained on the Hermes. Perhaps DeniaL's service would help me work around that... its a little beyond my knowledge scope (unix guy)
I use my work PC to install apps, and move things on/off the storage card. Not as convenient as it could be, but hopefully makes a little (if wacky) sense.
For the WM5 downgrade, I have the link to the "WM5 Downgrade guide v2".. could I cheat the steps by using ROM #3 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=302092 (since I was Cingular before, tho a slightly older version)?
Thanks,
Mike
I've been playing with PIMBackup... what I've found so far...
I can rename the WM6 compatible pim.vol to temp name and copy in my old pim.vol
PIMBackup will extract and save off the Appts and Tasks. I can see them with Verbose. It does not seem to be able to read the Contacts.
The WM6 contacts program also barfs.
PI2007 is able to read the contacts, but doesn't seem to have any way to backup/export.
Back to some more fiddling...
Mike
